Angels Lose Joe Maddon, Mike Trout, 13th Straight

Mike Trout suffered a groin injury, Joe Maddon was fired for not being able to hit for his batters and pitch for his rotation and bullpen, and the Angels dropped their 13th consecutive contest.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have surpassed the bottom. It’s only up from here.

Two more with Boston, then three with the Mets, and two with the Dodgers. Then we play an improving Seattle team. What is the MLB record for consecutive losses? 23?

You beat me to this comment tanana. But what I will do is elaborate a bit on what you said and what I have been thinking.

I said a few days ago that a 14-15 losing streak was looking possible. That is now not just possible but likely. With Eovaldi going tonight against a struggling Detmers, I think we can chalk it up as loss number 14. Then Thursday we would seemingly have a little better chance with Shohei on the hill. But the way our bullpen has been blowing games, it is hard to feel confident about any pitching matchup.

As tanana40 stated, we have the Mets coming up. 2022 Los Angeles Angels Schedule | ESPN

The NYM are arguably the best team in the NL (it is either them or the Doyers), so if Shohei does not win we are staring an 18 game losing streak right in the face. And guess what folks, facing the Dodgers potentially without Trout and Ward means that 20 games is a very, very real possibility. In short, we are entering the territory of historic suckage. https://www.espn.com/mlb/team/schedule/_/name/laa/los-angeles-angels

I mean, if a much better Mets team sweeps us and we lose two games to the Dodgers (very likely the way we are playing now) we will have tied the 2nd worst losing streak EVER! Several teams have done this, the most recent being the 1988 Orioles. Looks like it might be time to make a place at that table for us.

btw, where is Grandpa predicting his wins like clockwork every day? We have not heard from him for awhile…

The sickening thing about this is that we are actually a very talented team. About half of this current streak happened with Ward, Trout and Ohtani all playing.

This is more than bad folks. This is embarrassing. This is pathetic.

My only question is, how many of you are still wearing your Angels hat in public? How much would I have to pay you for you to do that right now?

Agree – our best chance last night was gifted to us by a Chowd error and we couldn’t hold them back due to our own miscues. Gotta play clean to win and we couldn’t. Embrace the suck.

Thanks for this elaboration and you make good points. I did wear my Angels hat yesterday (but I live in Idaho).

I live in the Bay Area, and I’ve always worn my Angels cap to play in my softball league, and I wore it on Sunday. I was wondering if anyone would make a comment, but no one did. If we lose through this Sunday, I wonder if that will change. If I find myself sitting on the bench half the game, I might start to suspect something…

That by wearing his gear, he is being “quietly ostracized”

If we’ve surpassed the bottom, then we’re in the upside-down.

Fuck this shit. I’m dropping that whole foot long hot dog Cuda440’s so into on the table. IF TROUT’s not significantly hurt I say the Angels get through the gauntlet, lick their wounds, get hot again, and snag that last poor boy’s Wild Card spot.

I haven’t said we’d make the playoff’s once the last few years. Someone’s got to be irrationally optimistic. So I’ll say it. We’re two and a half back now. I expect to be further back when we’re done with the Dodgers. But I think we have the horses to catch the White Sox, Indians or Red Sox… Rangers and Mariners too as needed. It’s just not that unpossible as long as we don’t have the dreaded rash of injuries.

Fuck the rest of baseball. We’ve had our shit luck for the year, those other teams’ll catch a dose. They can have all their best players injured too. I say we make the playoffs by the skin of our teeth. Is my belief based on anything? No. Not at all. The baseball universe can eat shit anyway. There’s plenty of season left and we’re makin a run.

We’re still just x games out of that last wild card. Maybe Manfred will change the rules again to allow EVERY team to participate in the playoffs.

15 years. 4 GM’s, not a single day of experience being a GM before getting the Angels job. As long as Arte’s desire to play super fantasy baseball with the majority of the payroll and then have his noob GM try to put together 20 other spots on a much smaller budget this is close to the result we should expect nearly every time.

Although I will say Perry did a fantastically horrible job with the money he did have. He overspent on relievers that don’t have dominant stuff and basically forgot that we need MI. Yea I know Fletcher is hurt but let’s be honest he hasn’t been good in awhile.

Interim GM, I think. Angels job was his first GM job without a qualifier.

Wore my unluckiest ballcap to the game in attempt to counter the negative mojo
Instead Tepera messed up my plan.

The cap is like 0-22

It’s difficult when there’s no depth. We have 4 middle infielders of limited bat all playing at the same time. GG will now be a regular.

I’m gonna go back to the pre-season and wonder if PTP discussed limited playing time with Upton or just DFA’d him because it worked so well with Pujols.

Or maybe having Upton now wouldn’t make any difference.

Now about that no bunt in the 9th…the next 2 guys whiffed so it didn’t matter.

I’m reminded of that song “Please, Mr. Custer”, which probably wouldn’t get made today with its political incorrectness. There’s a bit where the narrating soldier wonders “what the injun word for friend is”. He tries “kemosabe” and an arrow flies by. “Nope, that ain’t it”. Well “fire Maddon” ain’t it, either.

Wow, I remember Mr. Custer…
That is pulling a song out of the deep end of the river. Never thought I’d ever think about that song again, let alone have it make a point.

As a kid I had that song on a 1975 K-Tel album called Goofy Greats 😀

So, Minasian’s crappy plan to reverse his mistakes is to fire his manager and start a winning streak like the Phillies just did. However, unlike the Phillies who were successful, he didn’t get to play the Angels in that first game so it’s just another enervating loss.

Trout missing significant time will change everything. Perry should go nuclear if that’s the case.

We were losing WITH Trout, in fact his performance was a key contributor to the losing streak. But his injury does allow for PTP to play the injury card to deflect his culpability for this mess.

JackFrost

Yes, and for those who implied or outright stated that Maddon was the reason for this mess, well, last night kind of indicated that is not the case.

The one positive thing about the losing streak and the stadium deal falling through is that maybe, just maybe it convinces Arte to sell the team. And right now I would take my chances with any random new owner.

Why do I like baseball? Why do I like the Angels? Why do I do this to myself? Maybe if I woke up on a different side of the bed 15 years ago I would have liked ping pong instead and could have spared myself the agony of the last month. Kidding, but only partially. 😂

Why couldn’t my grandfather have bought a house in LA and not Orange County? Could have saved multiple generations a whole lot of heartache.

Could be worse. My dad was born in NY and is a Yankee fan. Moms family is from LA and her and I somehow became Angels fans.

I’d also know how my team winning a super bowl would feel if I’d chosen mire wisely. God I hate sports…

Was there a move in this game that Maddon would NOT have made?

Would some of the extreme shifts that yielded Red Sox baserunners have been closer to normal positioning were Maddon at the helm?

We will never know…

I was thinking the exact same thing. How Nevin played out this game is exactly what Maddon would have done. No major strategic changes, no changes to the bullpen choices.
