LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Maddonless

Good morning Angels fans. Little left to feel good about. Here are some links.

Angels News

The losing streak is not over. However, this time it was with a new manager. Although he showed promise and change, in the end he made stupid decisions, just like Joe.

So, Joe Maddon was fired. Yeah, Sam Blum really took it to him and Arte Moreno fired him for that (maybe). Phil Nevin is the interim skipper now.

Maddon was shocked when he found out. Guess Sam Blum is happy.

Oh yeah, Mike Trout is injured now. Groin issue. Because of course.

Shohei Ohtani is trying to purify the bullpen. Something has to work eventually, right?

However, the Angels have a good defense in the infield at least.

Around Baseball

Water fell from the sky in Cincinnati, very scary stuff. It happened so fast that the tarp wasn’t able to be put on in time and the grounds crew had to improvise. However, it was all for naught as the game was called anyway.

Seattle and Houston got into a spat. FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT!

Things got heated again after another HBP and the Astro pitcher and Dusty Baker got ejected. Maybe stop doing that, jerks.

MLB Network wants fans to come up with Albert Pujols retirement gifts. How about he gifts the Angels something to make up for his bad contract?

Stubhub won’t allow the selling of MLB tickets through June 11th due to technical errors on their end. What a digital dummy.

Looks like Stephen Strasburg is back. Man can just not stay healthy.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes.

What’s the over love of squid? Is it just the media dying for anything?? I’m not trying to drag the guy down but I was at 2 home games very recently where he was the last out with multiple runners on? Just poor timing I guess

It’s all about the defense. Up until a couple of miscues the last few games, he has been the closest thing to prime Andrelton Simmons I’ve seen.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

There isn’t anyone who’s super in love with squid. There are some people who see that at least he has value defensively…. thus his WAR is above 0, which is nice for us. People who complain about everything complain about “the love” because they get frustrated when someone won’t join their lynch mob.

Or because they are dumbf**ks who think that if we recognize on a chat board that Squid has some value that the General Manager will see that and then somehow turn down any opportunity he has to acquire “unspecified available better shortstop”.

Some folks have committed the sin of not hating Squid. Just about everyone but Squid’s mom understands that if a better shortstop comes along Squid’s on the bench and that’s a good thing.

Don’t worry. If we ever get the chance to be safe from Squid we will be safe from Squid.

Rengifo – is that the chick he sold the house out from under? Bizarre dude. Bad ballplayer and from the outside – seems like a buttwipe of a person. I could be wrong, though. Congrats on the new rugrat! 😀

Buttery – we were going to rip that dude to shreds if he ever made it back to the big league club. Didn’t want to see him in a major league Angels uniform again – FOR HIS OWN SAKE. Can you imagine the hate rage he’d get from the posters here the minute he threw a BALL instead of a perfect strike every pitch????

It’s all very simple, new manager or not: As long as the clown bus brings Rengifo, Lagares, Velazquez, and Wade to the stadium every day, the team will not be a contender post season. Our only hope is for the quick returns of Fletcher, Rendon, Trout, and Ward.

Off topic, but there’s one thing Arte can still do so I wouldn’t counts it as a lost season: install dividers between toilets in the bathrooms, FFS!!

I typically wear flip flops to the games, and can’t tell you how many times I feel piss spraying on my feet when someone is pissing next to me.

Old Cleveland Municipal Stadium, built in the n1920’s, Browns game. Tiny bathrooms with ancient troughs, line a mile long to use….and that was with a “universally accepted” long line to urinate in a few of the sinks. All true. But it’s Cleveland.

Besides, everyone knows the rules in there. Every other urinal, never whizz next to another guy. It’s just proper etiquette. Ask the towel/cologne guy stationed at every restroom if you have further questions on how to conduct yourself! Good day sir!

What did we know at the beginning of the season?

  • Bullpen was upgraded
  • Starting pitching was a question mark
  • Injury health over the course of a full season was a question mark
  • Offense after top 4 was a question mark
  • Could Ohtani replicate last year?
  • Defense upgraded
  • Maddon questionable bullpen use history
  • Organizational Depth lacking

As usual, the team was planning for best case scenario but did not prepare for the worst case. Every year, the Angels literally need everything to break their way to be good but that never happens.

And all of it was foreseeable. The inconsistent starters combined with Maddon’s questionable bullpen decision making, harmed both pitching groups.

Offense struggling with Trout and Rendon also predictably injured.

Ohtani two-way inconsistent and while Taylor Ward was a great surprise, he is now broken too.

The lack of investment in the overall organization meant that when the Perfect Storm hit, there were no solutions to be found internally and no assets to trade for an upgrade.

The Angels either have to spend their way out of this mess, like the Dodgers after the McCourt disaster, or just do a massive tear down and start over again. This muddling band-aid approach to stay somewhat competitive will get the organization nowhere other then treading water just below or above .500.

The dearth of starting pitching leaguewide though frankly makes both approach’s less than a sure thing. It will be dark times for the Angels for a few more years unless all the breaks come their way one season to offset the lack of depth or the draft selections progress quicker than anticipated.

I’m surprised it hasn’t come up yet, but one of the aspects of firing Maddon now is that it’s as close as you can get to firing the players. That’s why it’s happening in an early season losing streak.

Sure, Maddon’s decisions are part of it. So is the analytics thing probably. But this firing is akin to the firing of Dick Howser and Billy Martin by the Yankees in the 70s, Dick Williams with the 70s A’s, the 09 Rockies firing Clint Hurdle, the 89 Blue Jays firing Jimmy Williams…

The winning in April probably caused this. Now I’m totally guessing here, but this is what would happen in my head if I were PTP, and it makes sense.

See, I read about all of those teams in the past. Each one of those firings made the majority of the players feel bad. The manager tried, but couldn’t solve the teams issues. The manager was a nice guy. The lion of competition ate the manager.

On top of that, the manager and FO weren’t working well together. The FO/GM has a plan, is the manager’s boss, and the plan isn’t being executed. So why keep said manager?

If I’m Perry, at this point, I know we’re not bringing Maddon back, barring a miracle. I also know that the players “NEED A FIRE OF PURE GRIT AND URGENCY LIT UNDER THEM!!!”. So see that CoachDad? Perry was with you.

Why not fire Maddon now? The player’s all know that they have collectively cost Maddon his job. The interim manager and coaches know that they have the majority of a season to show they can work with the GM and his staff. The GM has several months to look into new managers if needed. The team has more than 100 games to get their act together.

So firing Maddon may not mean drastic differences in how the line ups work, or the in game decisions. It basically tells the players that they have failed to the point that the only head that could roll did roll.

Unfortunately, in almost all cases accept those above and a couple others, like a Marlins team I can’t recall back in the early 2000s, the team that fired their manager mid-season didn’t suddenly win a lot.

But. Most of those teams were horrible. They just didn’t have players at all. We do. So maybe this’ll work.

Did you notice in Trout’s pre-game press interaction….

Trout: “”We struggle… we just gotta go out there… I like boilerplate… baseball.”

He didn’t say anything about being shocked or surprised by the move. I’m pretty sure someone ran all this by him before the move was made, or he made his position clear to PTP before things were set in motion.

How was he “destroyed by facts and logic?”

Whether the team as a whole was “playing hard” is totally a matter of opinion. Effort is not like BA or ERA. It is not numerical and cannot be calculated. If Blum thought there was not adequate effort from the players that was only his opinion.

Clearly Joe did not agree. Frankly, I thought the line of questioning was not only naive by Blum but insulting as well.

I wonder if you’re misunderstanding or mis-seeing the reply-to origins. The “attack” you mentioned that 2pints launched was against JackFrost – not you. You might be on mobile therefore harder to see whose replying to what. I’m on desktop and it’s crystal clear

Honest question: What do you call all these posts? Not attacking?

Why so focused on my post where I just described the initial start of it? (Re: lighten up)

I call all these posts “having a conversation.” Just because the conversation is pointing out where you’re off or that your wish for no sarcasm is silly, doesn’t mean I’m attacking you. I’m just responding to what you’re saying.

I disagree. Reporters are there to ask tough questions. Maddon reflects the mood of the team and his mood with his response and tries to turn it on Sam. I don’t think Sam did anything wrong.

JackFrost

I think it is ridiculous to think that pro athletes are “not trying.” Number one that question is incredibly naive. Other coaches from major sports leagues have responded to this stupid question before and the answer is always the same. One does not become a pro athlete by being lazy or giving up. IF somebody does go that route they are out of the League very quickly.

Not to mention, giving half or some kind of effort other than full is the fastest way to get injured seriously. Players have to be alert and engaged at all times. Their lives depend on it. Literally.

He didn’t ask if they were trying. He asked if they were “competing and fighting” like Maddon wanted them to. There’s a distinction there. No, I agree it’s not the greatest question ever. But in the middle of a 12-game slide, it’s probably fair to ask. I also think Maddon was snippy.

I also don’t think Blum was trying to get after Maddon with that question

JackFrost

Reply to  benjiface

I don’t feel like Maddon was snippy. I watched it a couple of times too. When Joe asked him back if he (Sam) thought they were not competing or trying or whatever the adjective was he was asking, it was a legitimate question. Because Sam asked it one would assume he though they were not competing. Joe felt they were. BTW, I actually do not feel like there is much difference between “effort” and “competing” or fighting.

And honestly, I don’t think there was anything wrong with Joe’s response. Again, it was both an insulting question (because the obvious insinuation is that Joe was not doing or had not done his job as a manager) and naive. Yes, you are correct that Blum has a right to ask it, but most managers would have responded much less politely than Joe did there, I think.

I feel like this interchange (particularly Joe’s response) was way overblown by the media. Just another example of outlets digging for dirt and looking for juicy content. Not much there in his response to be offended about.

For Angels press, that is taking it to him. From Lyle to Fletcher the local press has generally carried the Angels bath water and not asked anything close to resembling a tough question.

Sam Blum is the first beat reporter to actually act like the reporters in most major markets. So he looks tough simply by asking the types of questions other teams/managers get routinely.

The Bottom Line is this wasn’t a playoff team when the season started………
Once again as in 2018 and even the weeks right after the 2019 combined no-hitter after Tyler Skaggs passing WE WE’RE BUTERCUPPED ( actually y’all were, but not me, I was a negative troll according to many of you and y’all had a good chuckle at my expense the day after the Detmers no-hitter. Now 3 weeks later, here we are with our manager canned and 3 gms underwater). We went into this season with David Fletcher as our SS and nobody of proven substance after Ohtani in the starting rotation. Get over it PLZ about Patrick Sandoval, what is it about this guy that this community has?
He was never a high level prospect (not even with the Astros). PLAYOFF TEAMS HAVE GOOD SS’S and teams that aren’t often DON’T!
The question now is are we gonna be sellers or buyers in 6 weeks? I take I, this rant isn’t incoherent this time. 💪 💪 💪 👈

Sadly, the Angel’s losing streak still hasn’t made you right about much of anything accept captain obvious shit like;

The sky is blue.
The Astros are good. Also, so are some other teams.
There are good players that do not play for the Angels for various reasons that generally add up to the fact that time travel is impossible and other teams draft and sign players too.
Here is a head shot of a good player, guess his name.

My questions about Maddon’s managing were all player usage. Why was Wade always in the lineup while Walsh and Marsh were platooned, Trout and Rendon given extra days off (maybe a good idea As it turned out), why were starters pulled so early…that kind of thing.

But I don’t recall anything other than the IBB with bases loaded that seemed odd about strategy. Yet here we are, one game into Nevin, and I’m thinking about the non-bunt.

If I were Arte I’d bring Maddon back, like Steinbrenner did with Billy Martin.

I think bullpen management following the early yanking of starters was also considered to be a major problem. Don’t forget lousy shifting. And the lack of fire or leadership coming from anywhere, players or management.

I think what I’m about to bring to the table deserves its own post… but I’m seriously considering spending money to have a plane fly over the big A with a “Fire Årte” “No New Stadium Deal for Årte” (up for more thoughts but yes the A in arte’s name will be the Angels A lol)

If I spend my own money and get the first banner flying, would there be a group interested in purchasing more banners (via this site, go fund me, whatever)? This organization has been run completely into the ground at all levels. I’m all for my idea above and/or paper bags over heads at home games… Idea are welcome but I’m a doer and would like to stop talking about it.

Do it. I mean, I actually want Arte to get the stadium deal, but I would be so stoked to see ANY of the whiners on this site actually DO something. Buy a plane banner. Don’t go to some games. Post negatively on the teams social media. Call into the Angels dumb AM830 shows and inundate the RushLodge with your negativity.

I hate Yankees and Red Sox fans but you have to hand it to them for one thing, their teams owners fear them as a group because they actually DO SHIT while we sit here and bitch like morons that Roger Lodge won’t say what we want him to say because he’s paid by “the man”. Life as an Angel fan is never dull. Always drama, always something going on. We all have that family member or friend where every day there is a problem. New shit, old shit, always F’ing something. And, the common denominator is them, not everyone else. Not the neighbor, not the co-worker, not the stranger in the parking lot of Chucky Cheese, it’s them. But they’ll never be capable of seeing it and we just don’t understand.

The Angels common denominator is Arte. 20 years of Soth, BBB, Joe, GM’s quitting in season, death of a player, stadium deals, lawsuits, more lawsuits, fighting the city, hires multiple first time GMs (likely controls them), his secret cabal of clowns that help him run this shit show, name change, almost 50 years of horrible long term contracts, issue worse than most with treatment of the minor league teams and possibly criminal acts in negotiations with the stadium deal (I won’t be surprised)………there is more, but why bother, feel free to add to the list.

Hard not to be fascinated by the process. I’ll stick around to see what happens next.

I don’t necessarily disagree that Arte causes some of the problems that the team faces, but yet again, the underlying question can’t be ignored… “if Arte wasn’t in charge (or leaves), who owns the Angels?”
And we really should remember that question too. Because things could be much worse. Imagine the McCourt dude owned the Angels. What, we’d have a $100MM small market payroll, and probably would have broken everyone’s hearts by trading away Trout 4 years ago.

I literally ok with anything other than Arte. Took a semi solid (and as solid as it had ever been in its’ history) organization and ran straight into the ground and worse, helped put someone there (wait, that court battle isn’t over yet and Arte is presumed innocent until proven guilty, right?)

Put the Plumber at 2b. What has the Plumber done in the last 10 days to impress? Put Rengifo at SS. That is a smart move, maybe we could lose 20 in a row then. Remove Walsh from games that a lefty pitches. We tried that and his glove is worth saving runners being on base rather than playing Duffy at 1b. So, many here are “over” Squid and you want him gone or maybe to the bench? Ok, now who is to be our SS? If memory serves correctly, the Angels did not in the last couple of years get Machado, Story, Lindor, Correa, or any other decent and available SS. Duffy is nothing more than a light hitting reserve and does not have the arm to be full time on the left side.

Everyone here knew that the Angels could not afford injuries of any type to plague the team in any way as we did not have the depth to sustain any chance of winning with our back-ups. Trout, Ward, Fletcher, Rendon all injured. 4 of the starting nine. Tough to comeback from. PTP rolled the dice and came up snake eyes. What is the lesson learned, you just can’t have a handful of very expensive players and fill in with scrubs and make the post season. If you want expensive players, you need to do better than surrounding them with Wade’s, Rengifo’s, Squid’s, and Lagarde’s. Either bring in better players at additional cost adding to payroll, trade your high priced player’s, or flounder just like we always do.

The dif. of stupid is at work here with the guy at the top. Stay the course and expect different results, lower payroll and start over with kids, or start making trades to have a better team.

At this point I’m about ready to re-enact the movie Network and lean out the window screaming.
