LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Dog Days

Ben Joyce almost threw the fastest pitch ever. Missed it by that much.

Kodai Senga might return to the mound this season. He threw a bullpen session that was encouraging. The Dodgers will activate Yoshinobu Yamamoto next week. Shohei Ohtani returned to Angels Stadium to a mixed reception and not much fanfare.

The Mariners signed right-hander Jesse Hahn to a minor league contract. Left-hander Daniel Castano announced his retirement. The Athletics claimed CJ Alexander off waivers from the Royals.

Corey Seager went onto the injured list with hip discomfort. Cubs left-hander Justin Steel went onto the injured list with left elbow flexor tendinitis. Bryce Harper had to leave a game after getting hit on the elbow by a pitch.

San Francisco signs a 31 year old .240 hitting 3B through his age 37 season for $151 million. What could possibly go wrong!!!

Chapman extension, age 31, 30.3 fWAR over 8 seasons.
Rendon signing, age 29, 30.0 fWAR over 7 seasons.

Rendon was 2 years younger and at least as good. That should have been a good signing instead of a disaster. How depressing.

An “expert” on the internet Lance Brodzowski writes that Caden Dana releases his pitches at different spots which could lead to him tipping his pitches as MLB hitters adjust to him. Hopefully our coaching geniuses can address that potential issue.

It’s September and the season is lost, so how about a game for all the farm frotteurs out there? “Prospect or Not.” Somebody names an Angels farmhand NOT on the MLB Top 30 list, but who seems to have developmental appeal on some level (age, tools, performance) and a spirited and time-wasting discussion ensues.

I’ll start:

Bryce Teodosio. Undrafted OF from Clemson… signed in 2021 after the all-pitcher draft… gifted a quick promotion to AA and showed some power but abysmal bat-to-ball skills over two seasons (<.200)… then got another unexpected promotion to AAA this year and is having easily his best pro season to date at age 25 (.761 OPS, 39 SBs).

Prospect or not?

Yes, he’s fast… but not as fast as Adams, if that’s the edge. Better hitter though?

gitchogritchoffmypettis

In keeping with our team’s plan to have 15 relievers and no starters on the roster I kind of keep track of our system’s pen arms. Especially cause we may see em fast. The boys at IE who had pretty dang low WHIPs and plenty of K/9 this year were Alex Martinez, Jennry Gonzalez and Sadrac Franco.

They are relievers so they’ll never be big prospects but if three or four guys like this work out of our system then that means we can sign a starter for 30M a year a lot easier when the time is right. I actually think someone from the pile of Kenyon Yovan, MDH, Eric Torres and Luke Murphy can also get lumped into this mess from the upper minors.

As for position players, I think my version of Teodosio is Gustavo Campero. He pretty much doesn’t make Top 30 because of age and switching off catcher. And probably lack of ability. But he’s killed it at AA/AAA thus far and seems to have broad skills.

grichmanpoorman

Seems like Campero has battled injuries too… good power for a little guy.

Probably more 5th OF than fourth. Good glove and solid speed, but he can’t hit advanced pitching. He had a 69 wRC+ two seasons running at AA, and he’s currently holding an 89 wRC+ in the PCL with a 26%+ K rate (and that’s quite a step up from the 33-40% he Ked in the Southern League).

Basically a late inning defensive replacement and pinch runner for a bench spot better used on a more well-rounded player.

With the way the team is playing, I’m guessing the Angels win 9 more times and get to 67 wins on the season. That’s disheartening, but not White Sox level disheartening.

OMG the White Sox are so brutally bad right now. The worst part is they are guaranteed not to draft any higher than 10th as they have activated that perennial tanking rule. The A’s are also in that boat with no pick higher than 10th.

5-38 since the AS break. On pace to set the record for most losses recorded, in any era, since the 1899 NL Cleveland Spiders, 20W-134L That season put an end to the Spiders. The White Sox are sure to break the modern era of losses 120 (Mets) and strong possibility of setting a modern-day record of lowest winning percentage. Yeah, banned from drafting higher than 10th after this dismal season, gut punch. In 2021 they had 93 wins, what a calamity, sad.

If my experience in Oakland is any indication, now is the perfect time to catch a White Sox game. Only the most dedicated fans are sticking around, which makes for great baseball conversations. Plus, with plenty of affordable seats, you might even find yourself sitting right behind home plate as the game goes on.

When Charles and I were at the game on Sunday, we were talking with some of the people around us. One person said the ChiSox had attendance of 98 for a recent game, and the A’ss had 17. Note that yes, those are double digit numbers. I don’t know if they’re accurate or not.

I really like that rule. While it might not be a complete solution, it’s a step in the right direction to discourage tanking. Hopefully, as more data and stats come into play, teams will be less motivated to lose intentionally.

Brett Kerry’s last 3 starts in AA:

20.2 IP
2.61 ERA
0.68 WHIP
31 Ks

2024 AA stats:

61 IP (7 starts)
2.66 ERA
0.85 WHIP

He had a rough time in AAA this season —

77.2 IP (13 starts)
5.68 ERA

Seems like we’ve been down this road (in Alabama, specifically) before with Kerry. This was written about him last year: “Kerry is also the first player in Trash Pandas history to pitch 100 or more innings and strike out 100 or more in two consecutive seasons.” Time to give him his shot in Anaheim, see if there’s anything there.

Honestly, those are the sort of stats I think you could expect from an organizational pitcher repeating AA for the third year.

If I squint just so, I can see a taxi squad swing arm here, maybe mop-up middle relief. He’s a command righty who lives 90-93 with the ability to locate all his secondaries, though none of them are really plus. Most of his Ks come top of the zone.

I think you might get some Barria like performances from Kerry, but just as often, he’s going to be exposed by first division hitters.

It is unclear if he suffered a tear, but he does have a meniscus injury”

The Greek God Achilles was killed when he was shot in the Achilles Heel with an arrow. Unknown historical fact, he actually died in the hospital from surgery complications caused by the same team Dr. the Angels employ, Dr. Nick.

Narcissistic behavior or one who has the intense drive to be the best amongst their peers? Very few athletes have this behavior and it does put off other players and spawns jealousy. Kobe, Jordan and I would say Ohtani has high expectations of himself which I think is perfect. Wish he was still here.

Having worked with individuals on the spectrum for 30 years, I typically feel confident in identifying someone who is high-functioning just by observing them. However, in his case, I haven’t perceived anything unusual. It’s worth noting that my observations are based solely on his television appearances, and he usually isn’t speaking English, which means language and cultural differences might obscure any indicators. The only distinguishing characteristics are his profound concentration on baseball and his reserved nature. A more definitive sign would be the avoidance of direct eye contact during conversation—I’ll have to watch for that.

I didn’t perceive your comment as derogatory, but after reading other comments, I can see how it might be interpreted that way. Additionally, my work with individuals on the autism spectrum, which includes highly intelligent professionals like doctors, lawyers, and engineers, has given me a deep respect for them. These individuals were once categorized under Asperger’s syndrome, which is now considered part of the broader autism spectrum. To gain a better understanding of people with autism, I recommend exploring the works about Temple Grandin, either her book or the film adaptation.

I don’t have any reason to think he has a touch of the tism and honestly don’t care if he does.

BUT he does act strange, even for a Japanese man in America. I think it has more to do with being catered to since he was young. He seems like a nice hard working guy, so he makes all the same demands as an asshole like Barry Bonds, but it looks and “feels” way different because he’s not a jerk when it comes to his personality. Just very talented, very focused, and very entitled since he was a boy so he comes off “different”.

I know everyone’s probably all sensitive about this comment and that’s fine…. but I also get what you are saying. He has this kind of childlike detachment and matter of factness about just demanding things he wants. It’s not like an evil ego thing, or mean, it’s just “I want XYZ. It should appear now and be the way I want it.” Followed by a smile and a home run.

Outside of 1 inning, the Angels played great baseball and went toe-to-toe with Brooklyn, and even shut down their formidable, oh-so-scary 3 MVPs.

Amazing starting pitching by both Reid and Griffin. We dreaded in anticipation of these games, but they delivered. Hopefully this is when Reid finally turns the corner and never looks back. Drop the curve, Reid.
