Bombs Away! Angels Sink Pirates 7-5

Shohei Ohrani hit a middle in the first. Luis Rengifo hit a home run from both sides of the plate. Squid even got in on the action.

Tyler Anderson started off rough but pitched into the 7th inning.

5-2 over the last two series with 3 coming up in Detroit.

Could have been 3 straight series wins since coming out of the AS break, but whatever. 7-2 homestand would have been amazing, but 6-3 isn’t all too bad.

I’m pretty sure there’s something in the beers at the stadium that makes us all completely freaking manic depressive. We lose? Sobbing in fetal position for hours. We win? Well, Halo fans are too well behaved to set cars on fire on State College Boulevard, but deep down you know you want to.

Agreed. This is one of the most BIPOLAR sites I have ever seen. It’s been more so this year – I suspect because of the emotional attachment to Shohei and the prayer that this team can compete and keep him. So every win touches that emotional hope button and every loss triggers doomsday.

I am firmly in the trade Shohei crowd – I think it would be the wrong move to invest $600m-plus and he might not even take it if Arte offered it. Who knows- Arte may have offered it already only to have Ohtani’s agent say they were going to test free agency.. Just too much risk not to take a healthy package of young talent.

So – these losses and wins are not so emotional for me personally.

We have a pitcher who is has the 4th most strikeouts in all of MLB. We also have the leader in triples, both leagues: fast AF! We also have the Home Run leader for all of baseball.

We could be saying sayonara to all three of these guys at some point in the next 7 days. Oy!

So what you’re saying is we should sell high for once.

Rengifo is making $2.3 Million this year and will be an Arb 2 player next year so the salary is going to really start jetting up.

Well dammit. There’s a lot to be encouraged about. Particularly if this last few games of Gifo is a repeat of his hot second half of last season. The return of some dudes in the next few weeks has the potential lineup looking as good as we’ve seen in a hot minute and the rotation and pen could be good enough to support what could be a dynamic offense.

Neto – SS
Ohtani – DH
Trout – CF
Moniak – RF
Ward – LF
Drury – 2B
Mous – 1B
Thaiss/ Ohoppe – C
Rengifo / Rendone – 3B

– this assumes we Ship out Renfroe or he’s on the very short side of a platoon with Mous at 1B and Mick in RF

I haven’t had a drink in weeks but Cheers for *optimism. If we buy us a starter ( Giolito please) and another high leverage pen arm this club might have a fighting chance.

* Disclaimer: optimism contingent on winning the next few series

Giolito ($10.4MM x 1 yr, FA next season)
Flaherty ($5.4MM x 1 yr, FA next season)
Cease($5.7MM x 1 yr, two more yr of arbitration, FA 2026)

Any one of them is a great choice. Which one would Arte go for?

Cease has two more years of team control, so I doubt he’ll be traded. But he’s the best of the three.

Show them the highlight real of Rengifo today and make the trade! They can have Rengifo and a triple A arm.

Winning games with key players on the mend and Shohei the Pitcher not pitching very well. This portends well for the future if we can continue to hang “in it” for the next few weeks.

Anderson gave us a
solid, workmanlike outing today and this is what he looks like
at his best. If nothing else, he’ll typically give you 6 innings – the question is always will he give up 2 runs or 5?

Naturally Rengifo carries the offense while snagging a late inning liner. He plays because he’s toolsy and flashes just enough to get management excited. Rengifo is not our biggest problem (injuries are) nor is he our worst player.

Matt Moore & Estevez are really good BP pieces. Soriano is also emerging. We talk often of injuries to key players, but don’t mention Bachman enough. We need him
back stat to push Webb down the totem pole.

Disappointing to read that Drury may need a rehab assignment, which leads me to believe that that injury is more severe than reported – of course.

Live to see another day, or two, or three.

Give them credit for hanging in there.

Apoligizes to Anderson for always assuming the worst from him.

Free us from Webb

I missed yesterday and assumed Neto just had a rest day. I turned on today late and saw he wasn’t playing and that’s when I looked up and discovered he had back tightness. I just finished b*tching about how the Angels can’t be competitive playing Rengifo, Velasquez and Escobar, when lo and behold, the Replacements strike.

(If) we keep in striking distance, I think Perry will add multiple arms. And I think he will be aggressive. Just hope he’s smart about it and doesn’t give away what little we have on “Arte’s Farm for unwanted Minor Leaguers”. Replace Webb, Reyes and Davidson with arms that aren’t a crap shoot when they pitch.

Easy call to move prospects to me but sadly, Angels have a shit farm. Would be great to get stout starter and another bullpen arm or two. Defense improvements would be nice.

Could we sucker the Dodgers to take Anderson back? They are zoning in on Cease of Flaherty. Would love either one.

As much as we need another starter, help in the pen is #1 IMO. Two more quality arms in the pen. Overpaying for an expiring contract or 2, for a veteran arm, that can get outs would be my priority.

Going to be hard. There is a lot more buyers than sellers. Probably won’t come cheap.

Agree with that. Everyone could use an arm and will be looking. Honestly, I don’t have confidence that Perry will swing a significant deal due to resources.

The problem is that teams that will part with a high leverage arm won’t want Renfroe. Both of those types of players are for teams that are playing to win this season. They could do both in that they trade Renfroe for a prospect and trade a prospect for a reliever. It’s unlikely to be the same transaction though.

Not so sure.. I could see the Yankees ( who have a really good Pen) Giants and Brewers ( also solid pens) but needed some pop be good fits for Renfroe .. just depends on the return back

I saw Aroldis Chapman throwing 103MPH bazooka today against Dodgers. He had a shut down inning with 2Ks. I know, I know, it’s too late. Gotta move on.

With Padres loss today, Hader might be back on table. But, it would be expensive as you say, and Padres will most likely sweep their next series foes the Pirates. So, I am not really expecting Angels to acquire Hader. 😥

Going to hard to find a match for all looking to add.
Looks like we have 8 teams on the outside looking to sell,
A’ss, Tigers, White Sox’s, Royals, Pitt, Rocks, Nats, Cards.

Two on the fringe Mets, SD (you brought up) and maybe the Cubs. Lots of competition to find the gold.

I agree with you. But Perry’s failure to sign another reliever or two in the off season is the reason we have a bullpen problem. There was an abundant supply of free agent relievers, and so the prices were reasonable. But Perry decided to build a bullpen on the cheap. Or perhaps Perry wasn’t completely honest when he kept asserting that Arte wasn’t being stingy with the budget.

I mean, he signed two good relievers. It’s unusual to sign more than that. The problem is that so many have been really bad.

Before you get all curmudgeonly there Frostie you might want to look at Sorianos numbers lately. In his last 6 appearances he has a WHIP of 3.00 and ERA of 5.79 So the biggest difference is Soriano is allowing even more baserunners but slightly lesss hard contact ( Although a OPS against of 1.010 is pretty bad) .

Phillip should just stick with our new weapon as everyone fears the Poup

You are right. With Colonic out with his World Cup Soccer style kick on Gatorade cooler for at least 6-8 weeks, they will hunt hard for outfield bat. Mets’ Mark Canha has been rumored to be desired by Mariners. He is not a huge homerun threat, but he for some reason seems to hit well against the Angels. He is well known for almost picking up a fight with Sho.

Canha. Like you said, is not big threat but with that pitching staff, they will be in most games. They just need to have guys who can get key hits and play good D. Reminds me of the 2010 WS SF Giants with little offense but opponents walked death march facing their starters.

At least we are back ahead of Seattle now — I hate being in 4th place in the division !

Also, Toronto has a 3 game series coming up at Dodgers starting tomorrow. We’ll see how things play out, but we should at least have a chance over the next few days to cut that WC lead they have on us …

Of course we’ll need to take care of business against a gritty Tigers team. Won’t be easy…
