LA Angels Weekend News Crash: I’m Back

Thanks to Yorke for filling in for me last week. I spent 9 amazing days in Japan. Essentially 3 each in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka and I loved every minute of it. Although I think I loved the minutes the most in Kyoto. The country is so gorgeous. The food is so incredible. The temples and shrines are not only beautiful but they resonate with your soul in a way that must be felt. Oh, and I caught an Orix Buffaloes game and that atmosphere was incredible.

That’s me and my good friend Hanson inside the Osaka Dome. We got lucky and caught Miyagi on the hill. Absolutely loving that name, I picked up a shirt with his name and number. I also went by the Seibu Lions stadium and grabbed some merch there.

On to what is important, the links…

Mike Trout is the man. Again. He crushed the Yankees this week.

His slugging percentage was essentially 1.5 and his OPS was essentially 2. That is beyond video game numbers.

Unfortunately the Angels had to settle for a split in the series because Jordan Romano sucks and should not be a closer. It is easy to be mad at Romano, but let’s be real. Angels fans should be mad at Perry Minasian for his continued failures to build a bullpen.

Suzuki has proven not to be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he’s now non-committal on Romano as closer. The issue is the lack of a good option anywhere on the roster.

Fortunately, Kirby Yates is facing live hitters and should start his rehab games soon. So hopefully this nightmare is almost over.

You know it had to feel good for Oswald Peraza to go to New York and torch the team that gave up on him. Kudos to the kid for a huge series.

While in NY, Jo Adell gave his glove from his epic 3 home run robbery night to the Hall of Fame. He also crushed a gorgeous grand slam to seal the win on Thursday.

There were a lot of takeaways from the series in the Bronx. I think Silent C is a story that is easy to overlook but deserves mention. Could the kid actually be good?

Now on to the Padres. They won in crazy fashion yesterday and feature a stout lineup.

The good news is the Angels start the series with Jose Soriano on the mound and he’s been fantastic this year. Yusei Kikuchi is on tap for game 2 and has not been good. I did a deep dive on Kikuchi and it looks like he could be good again soon, though.

I’m trying not to turn this column into a series of all my pieces, but time is limited. This week is about 50/50 and that should continue from here on out. I do really appreciate the readership this site brings and I love the crew here.

So come hang out with us Sunday in section 205 Row F. I’ll be the tall, balding guy with an amazing family sitting next to some of the posters here. And if you can’t make this one, we will do another later in the year.

Lastly, thank you Jackie Robinson for paving the way for so many people I love. My childhood best friend’s dad became a father figure to me and that probably doesn’t happen without Jackie and MLK. So when I get a little emotional about those two figures, that is why. Genuinely loved that man and miss him every day.

I do think Jackie’s social impact, as great as it was, overshadows his playing career. He was a heck of a ballplayer and I love this highlight reel.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I will be at the meetup on Sunday with my son and wife so try to say hello if you can.

It’s difficult to “talk baseball” today, but, with this division seemingly ripe for the plucking, it really pisses me off that we didn’t retain Jansen and/or sign a higher level dude or two for the BP.

I know. Every time I think about the Angels, whether it’s the recent series or tonight’s game, I find myself wanting to extend sympathy to GA’s family.

While I wished they had brought Kenley back for another year, even with an option for a second, I’m not sure he wanted to stay with an organization that was treading water while Arte waited to sell.

11-9 at worst.

Extrapolate his performance out over the next 4 months and that likely equates to 10-12 wins .

Playoff’s? Perhaps.

in other news….because GA is the story today….but in other news, Yankee fans now want to trade for Trout. Not all the fans agree, though, because of Mike’s injury history. The dialog is hilarious. One post replies “you’re an idiot” and then gets told “no, you’re the idiot” because that’s how Yankee fans think.

I’m pretty sure most fan sites have exchanges like that. But after the last series I can see why fans would want to see him do that for 81 home games.

Skanks fans should consider themselves beyond fortunate to have split that series.

As for Trout, YEAH, he hits .356 in that stadium. Is that good?

not here, though. We’re all polite. “I must say that Romano doesn’t appear to be closer material”. “Well I would suggest that perhaps a bad outing or two doesn’t define the player’s ability”. “Yes, I suppose that might be yet his history suggests that his better days are behind him”. “Perhaps so”. That’s how we discuss things here…isn’t it?

Who would take this? (Or who would do this if you knew Arte wasn’t selling and won’t up the budget)

Way to light of a return for Soriano. He gets you at LEAST 5 players. And the rating/WAR numbers would have to ridiculously slant in the Angels favor.

Rather have 2 good ones – than 5 potential platooners. 😂

Oh, he will get you 2 good ones AND another 3 top prospects. An ace #1 pitcher has a ton of value for a team looking at a World Series run. Your trade proposal is too light. The Deferrals would jump on that trade in a heartbeat .

grichmanpoorman

Yes agreed. Which is why this trade is shite. Tibbs has fourth outfielder AAAA org guy written all over him. De Paula is a top prospect but young and hardly sure thing. Soriano undeniably an ace at this point in time… that warrants a mix of MLB-ready starters and a couple of raw youngins.

Hey – I’d love for Arte to sign him. Doesn’t look like that’s the direction he’s going – and if he does – he’ll overpay. So with that in mind, him not likely to get out his checkbook as he positions the organization for sale, might as well get value while we can. Likely won’t be too many teams sold until the new CBA is ironed out. I just don’t want to see him get nothing again. Soriano can make huge money during arb with what Skubal changing the entire scope of arbitration, so Soriano will be in no hurry to sign. And no way Tibbs is just projected as a 4th outfielder. #13 overall pick that already has 9 jacks in AAA.

How about keeping our Ace and not trading him away?

Pay the man now and be done with it.

Shocking, and tragic. Reports are vague on what caused GA’s passing other than a “medical emergency”. Any more details?

I’m 76 years old and this news is crippling. I’ve lost many family members and friends over the years but GA holds a special spot for me. Playing the sport I love above all others, he perfectly embodied the type of man my father raised me to try and be. In this day and age when so many of our heroes turn out to have feet of clay, Garrett never disappointed us. He so ably demonstrated his love and respect for the game during and after his playing career. Rest in Peace Mr. Anderson. I will always count you among my Heroes!

Was perusing Baseball Reference and noted their league Wins Above Average by Position graphic. I’ll list the team placement by position. It had a few surprises and several no surprises at all: SP 8, RP 12, C 10, 1B 14, 2B 1, 3B 7, SS 1, LF 13, CF 1, RF 5, DH 5. Trout and Neto being first isn’t a surprise, but 2B is. I’m shocked Nolan is that bad, but Lowe and the bullpen are where we all thought.

Japan is my favorite country I’ve ever visited, probably tied with Ireland.

My wife and I did 6 nights in Tokyo with a little trip in the middle to Kyoto and Osaka for one night each. We really regretted not spending more time in Osaka – the food scene in that city is amazing.

Japan is like traveling 20 years into the future combined with being on another planet. They are so culturally and technologically advanced compared to the US.

I love Italy & Spain and I’ve only had brief stays in Tokyo for business trips.

I do intend to do a proper Japan trip. One day. I hope.

Sounds like a great trip Jeff! I’m going with my wife for 2 weeks in Oct/Nov. Tokyo/Nagano/ Kyoto/Hakone. Can’t wait.

Two quick questions:

1. How was/is the jet lag?
2. As Americans we have a tendency to be loud even in public spaces and transportation like trains. I hear that is looked down upon by the Japanese. Would appreciate your observations.

I commuted for 18-months (working in Tokyo, 2-3 week durations) before I eventually moved to Japan but on Fridays, I would fly out of Narita at 5:00 PM, arrive at LAX ~ 8:30 AM and drive into the office in Glendale and work 2-times the same day. Used to hit a wall around 3:00 PM-ish. #TheAmbitiousEmployee

When we were there, the ONLY time I ever heard loud boisterous people in a quiet restaurant, they were American. Agree with Jeff’s point – just read the room and be respectful and you’ll be fine.

Don’t scream in public for no reason. Don’t talk in public with your phone on speaker mode. Basic stuff.

Unless you’re in an izakaya after business hours. The Japanese can get rowdy too!

Thank you for the advise. I’m quite sensitive and respectful to the environment and culture when I travel so I should be okay. That said, I have a naturally somewhat loud speaking voice (particularly with a few drinks mixed in) so I’m concerned about being unintentionally too loud.

Thinking on Jackie Robinson’s impact, without his sacrifice I wouldn’t have enjoyed many of my favorite Angels: Rod Carew, Reggie Jackson, Frank Robinson, Chili Davis, Torii Hunter, Don Baylor, Lee Smith, Sandy Alomar Sr and “Big Daddy Wags” Leon Wagner. Both I and baseball would have been poorer off without them.

Interesting and crazy, but it looks like a large part of that is due to defense. Last year oWAR was 1.8 and this year is 1.3, so Trout’s a little more than 2/3rds of the way there offensively.
