Garret Anderson has Passed Away

Angels Legend Garret Anderson has passed away. GA, the leader of many Franchise longevity records and stats, was not just a beloved player, one who came up through the Angels system and won a World Series, but one who was personally the most levelheaded and professional athlete many of us ever saw.

We, as fans, may have joked about him being lazy, his play seeming to be effortless, but he truly worked hard and just made it seem like it was easy for him. I wish we as fans would have as a whole realized that, even if the shorthand for saying “I am too GA to do this” was admittedly a useful phrase.

GA is in the Angels HOF, and while he never sniffed the one in NY, he will always be remembered to us Angel fans. From his consistency, still being the franchise leader in hits, doubles, RBI, extra base hits, and sacrifice flies, to his longevity, being the franchise leader in games, PA, and at bats, GA was the rock of 90’s and 2000’s Angel teams, putting up numbers year after year with almost no recognition besides us Angels fans.

GA still leads in many career Angel stats

He did make the All Star Team 3 times, and won the Home run Derby in 2003 as well as the All Star Game MVP that same year. Something that I am sure he was proud of and held over his teammate Tim Salmon. But I think I can say that for most of us, his most memorable moments, what we think of him most, is him standing on 2B after hitting a smooth double, or standing in LF, day in and day out.

I will say I was saddened when he left the team after the 2008 season. Seeing him in Atlanta and Dodger uniforms never felt right. He was always an Angel to us, and when he came back to be celebrated and being shown on TV, it not only felt right seeing him again, but also made us all feel old as one of the all time great Angels was retired.

We will miss you.

I will always remember that bases clearing double in Game 7, and sprinting in from LF when we finally won. I was there. There was no GA that day.

I was most happy for him and Tim Salmon. He was a great Angel, but an even better person. The world is a worse place with him not in it.

Rough day for me. Favorite Angel of all time. Always clutch.

I remember my pops taking me to the Angels vs Marlins game in 05. Dtrain vs Lackey. Vladdy hit 2 solo homers angels won 2-1 in extras. After the game we went to the team store and he let me pick out a jersey. Even with all the Vladdy mania I chose the grey away Anderson 16 jersey.

Favorite play was that sliding catch yelling in jubilation in the World Series.

Cheers to you good sir! Thank you for all the memories. Prayers to your family. Godspeed!

No one I’d rather have up with less than 2 outs and a runner on third. Was so clutch, so many good memories.

It’s sad he was too GA to live a long life, seemed like a great dude, gone way too soon. RIP GA

I saw in person
1. 10 RBI night vs Yankees in 2007
2. 2002 WS Game 6 base running
3. 2002 WS Game 7 game-winning double

Video of 10-RBI night

He was not exactly gracious with fans directly, I do recall a quote where he said he didn’t understand the crazy fanaticism of fans … and he didn’t look me in the eye when he signed for me inside the stadium at a book event – instead in that moment I chatted up his son, Trey, as I knew he was in little league in Irvine at the time … but he also coolly went about his business. Quiet and unassuming focused on his craft. I’m fine with that!

I also recall Tori Hunter addressing Garret’s perceived “slowness” in the field by saying GA had sneaky speed … “I saw Blue Smoke” … it even became a short term nickname for Garret around HH … “blue smoke.” He was fast – he just used his brain to make the smart play instead of laying out and injuring himself.

Anyway … he also surprised the hell out of me at spring training in 2008 during a main field BP sesh, he picked up his bat and handed it to my 8yo daughter – something she will never forget. Really a cool moment.

Thanks for your amazing career Garret – you brought a lot of joy to this Angel fan. God speed brother! Rest in Peace. 🙏

One thing that is for certain and very apparent by social media platforms, it’s not just us Angel fans feeling the pain today. Many baseball fans (and non-fans) out there appreciated Garret, the classy human being he was on/off the field, his baseball ability to play the game right and just being a killer at the plate. The outpouring from opposing team fan nations all speak of Garrett with the utmost admiration. It’s impressive. I hope his family is able to take away a sliver of the outpouring to help ease their pain with this irreplaceable loss. Such a difficult day and I really feel for the family.

What a gut punch. GA got screwed out of the ROY in 1995. I was at the All-Star game and festivities at Commiskey in 2003. The Home Run Derby was awesome with Pujols hitting bombs, and GA just casually dropping ball after ball into the second row in right field. So awesome to see him win that and the MVP the next day (and I think Donnelly got the W). Farewell to a great Angel.

That is really gut wrenching, my wife called me in tears like one of our own had passed on and perhaps that is appropriate. He always seemed to be a such a cool headed and likeable guy that teamates loved. Prayers to his wife and kids, may God give you peace.

I will be at tonight’s game, I’m hoping they put together a fitting memorial video for an all time great. This has to be a gut punch to Tim Salmon, the rest of the late 90s to 2000s team mates and the rest of the Angels organization. RIP Mr. Anderson.

A great halo and by all accounts an even greater person.

I’ve spent countless hours watching Angels baseball, and there aren’t many players who mesmerized me like GA did. I’ll always associate “cool” with GA.

Lost a big part of my childhood today.

RIP legend ❤️😇

RIP, GA! I’m going to re-watch game 7 of the 2002 World Series in your honor tonight.

The guy was 2 months older than me which makes me reflect on my own health. No matter how young/old you are, you can go at any minute. Nothing in life is guaranteed. RIP.

Wow. Just saw that GA passed away.

He was my favorite Angel in the early 2000’s. Still have the road gray “Anaheim” jersey of his..

A truly cool dude and an amazing career with the Halos !

That is a great memorabilia piece from the Angel legend. The road jersey with Anaheim on the front are extremely rare because they wore it for a very short time before switching to the Angels front. Wear that jersey proud at the next game you attend, ‘Anderson Forever’!!.

Wow. I remember watching his MLB debut against Oakland in 1994. Other memories include his 10 RBI night, clearing the bases double in WS game 7 and winning the HR Derby. One of the all time great Angels. RIP.
