Angels Slam Yankees, Split Series

Final day at Yankee Stadium and it is in the morning. While those who would want to watch have to sneak a peek from Work or School, these players have to go back out there and try and get a split on what should be a sweep. 3 straight games with the lead in the 9th, 2 Losses. And now we have what is essentially a bullpen game vs the Yankees healthy Ace.

So how was this pitching anyway? Suter was the opener, I guess. He went more than 1 inning, so more of a tandem start guy. Angels should really try that, have their 5th spot be their 5th and 6th starters tandem starting. He went 2+ innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2. Alright, so more of a 10 batter opener after all.

The offense was more straightforward, score more, hit home runs, and keep piling on so the bullpen doesn’t blow it AGAIN. And they did their job, again carried by Trout, but also Oswald, who was making his former team cry. And of course, the man of the month, Jo Adell hit a GRAND SLAM to keep a certain pitcher from blowing it.

Highlighted Recap

The Angels struck first with an Oswald Peraza 2 run home run in the first!

2-0 Angels

Unfortunately, Judge cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 1st.

2-1 Angels

Suter faced 1 batter in the 3rd, who was walked, and then caught stealing, so his day was done. But Sandlin allowed a baserunner and a then a home run to Stanton.

3-2 MFY

Sandlin did not last long. 1 and third. Then came Aldegheri.

Defense continued to be great for the Angels (besides that one from yesterday) as Jo Adell continued to be a great RF-er

Gold Glove Defnese

And Nolan made a great catch in the 5th.

Nice job

Aldegheri was now the pitcher of record as the Angels tied it up with an Oswald double in the 6th.

TIED GAME!

And then a Grissom single to take the lead!

4-3 Angels!

Josh Lowe then blooped a single to score 2 more.

6-3 Angels

Which was needed as the MFY hit a home run immediately in the bottom of the 6th.

6-4 Angels

That was it for him, Sam Bachman time. And he has a great pickoff move

GOT HIM

Yeah, Mike Trout is back, as he hit his 5th home run of the series in the 7th.

7-4 Angels

So the Angels were still in Ramano range so they needed more. What about 4 more? Like a JO ADELL GARND SLAM!

11-4 ANGELS

Now THAT was a lead, and one that a certain pitcher should NOT pitch the 9th for. So instead, it was Silseth, who did his job. Angels win, back to .500 AGAIN.

Upcoming

3 Game series at the Big A hosting the Padres. CTPG meetup there on Sunday at 1PM.

hopefully when some other guy cools off Schanuel heats up. Neto will some catch on fire too. My hope along with all of us is that Trouty does not cool anytime soon. Might be time to try Silseth as a starter, just throwing that out there. O’Hoppe needs to get it together very soon too. Our starting pitching has not hit it’s best yet although it has been better than anyone thought possible around here. Even being at or around .500 is more exciting than what has gone down over the last few seasons. Fascinating looking at the ALWD standings.

Nick Pivetta is out for SD (likely for many weeks), so he won’t start against the Angels. He would have started Friday night.

Didn’t catch the game. Watched the highlights. How bad was Romano today? I read some comments and based on those, he gave up what 8 or 9 runs today?

Really? All by himself, huh? I guess if they kill him and dump in the Hudson River, all the team’s problems would be solved. LA vs LA World Series! Give me a break.
How about Neto catch a little league pop-up. How about Logan throw out a base runner once in a while. I’m not saying Romano was blameless, but these comments, you would think the guy has personally violated you.
Perhaps the we win together, lose together things our coached taught us should be considered?

What are you going on about here man? He blew two multi-run leads in consecutive games. No expectation at all that he keeps the job.

Of course, the manager thought using Romano in both games as a closer is an eyebrow raiser.

now that we’ve gained a split I’ll say why I don’t hold it against Soshzuki. Romano had done well up to this series then had a horrible game. One horrible game. And our manager knows that things can happen and that Romano had to be given another chance. Well, now he’s had it. At this point I think we might see one more late appearance for Cheesy and if it’s as bad then he’ll either be slotted into cleanup action or else DFA’d.

Just like we can’t be angry at Neto for yesterday’s game (stupid to try for 3rd, didn’t take charge of a popup, made a throw to the wrong side of home plate) it’s also true that we can’t overreact to one bad performance, even if some of us expected it. But two times…yeah. And a third would be the end, I think.

Romano’s last 3 years have been horrible. He should’ve never been given the closer spot to begin with imo. That’s why Suzuki is to blame.

If I were the manager it’d be Bachman now and Joyce if he ever pitches again.

I think everybody will end up getting a shot at it. Bachman, Silseth, Yates, Pomeranian, Zefer, Everybody Loves Raymano, etc I think the team needs Pomeranz to snatch the job, if not Yates. I can understand why Kurt went with Romano over the unproven guys who cannot throw strikes; Bachman, Silseth, Zefer, and guys in the minors…Klassen, Cortez and Urena. They cannot throw strikes too. Angels are F-‘d. Maybe Chase Shores or Nate Snead can step into the roll in 2027.

Nah, the first loss was very much on Romano, the second loss was far more due to Peraza/Neto.

Romano induced a pop-up that would have resulted in two outs, no one on. Run expectancy is only 10% in that scenario, and the Yankees are bringing up their slowest player to the plate.

Peraza let the ball fall for what should have been an error, and the runner stole second on O’Hoppe. Now run expectancy is at 67%, and likely more than that because Chisholm Jr is their fastest player.

That ball drop doesn’t happen and even if Wells gets on base via a walk, a hit maybe gets the slow footed catcher to third. Late relievers give up a walk and a hit *all the time*.

Neto took responsibility for the error, but Peraza also just let it drop. You don’t put the Yankees fastest player on base for free without losing that game. Once he stole 2b, it was pretty clear the game was lost. The odds were very much in the Yankees favor to tie, and probably to win.

You left out the fact that the first batter of the inning (Stanton) hit a ball that was absolutely scorched and would have been a double except for the the fantastic leaping play by Teodosio. Romano was fortunate to not already have a guy on 2nd even without the error. That evens out in my book (one lucky play and one unlucky one).

So you let him off the look for the game winning hit because of the error, but at the same time you don’t debit his ledger for being the lucky recipient of a great defensive play on a ball that a vast majority of the time would have been a leadoff double . More than a little bit of bias here…

But that’s why Teo was in the game. Doesn’t subtract from the fact that two outs no one on gives the Angels a roughly 90% win expectancy, and the error and steal dropped that precipitously. Those are the historical odds – I don’t make them.

Even the NY media wrote up the game win as due to the infield error. On a play by play basis, the Angels went from an overwhelming likelihood of winning to a strong likelihood of losing the lead on those two plays that Romano was not responsible for.

I have no connection to Romano. I’m not a Jays fan, and have paid little attention to him since about 2022.

Moreover, it’s far tougher to argue against the mob than with it – so I have little skin in it other that to try encourage fans to analyze game outcomes rationally. Evaluating game situations on the historical odds is the opposite of bias. I’d say the mob in this case is actually participating in another sort of bias – recency bias.

I agree with much of what you’re positing re: the 2nd blown save, but, I would say that the “mob” is not guilty of recency bias alone. People are weighing the results of the last two blown saves against his poor performance over the past three seasons and drawing logical conclusions. There’s a reason that he was signed at a relatively low price point.

Moreover, and this more subjective, he doesn’t pass the “eye test”. Meaning that his stuff appears to be mediocre at best in terms of velocity, movement, etc.

The last two seasons’ underperformance correlated with elbow surgery, back injuries and a chronic nerve issue. It wasn’t a lack of talent or stuff – elbow surgery specifically has a long recovery timeline.

If the Angels are going to rely on rehab projects and remnant inventory to construct a bullpen, they’re going to have to exercise some patience and not overreact to one or two bad outings. Honestly, this happens every season twenty or thirty games in – fans overreact to every BP fail and torch the manager for returning to inconsistent relievers game by game. Today Bachman is the stud, but he’s blown plenty of games himself. There’s no one in the pen at present who has a stable profile.

Again, I’m not a Romano fan and have no personal connection to him. I like that he looks like a meth addict who sells second hand electronics from his El Camino, but that’s a low bar. I’m barely an Angels fan at this point – my wife is following the A’s, and I’m accompanying her on that journey this year, which I think gives me a little more objectivity in this case.

I just see Angels fans doing what Angels fans do: give up on guys quickly, then re-embrace them when they string a few good games together. It’s early in the season – overreaction is typical and expected. And I’ve always been the data-driven contrarian that goes against that trend – ain’t really a new thang.

I would be remiss to not mention Bachman. 3 innings of 0 runs allowed.

Some are questioning the wisdom of having him go 3. Not me. We HAD to get this one and prior to the Jo Slam, the game was within reach. He was pitching well and Kurt made the correct call IMO.

He’ll be available by Saturday.

Plus Bachman only threw 27 pitches, or about what Sandlin and Aldegheri threw in their less than 2 innings of work.

First, I totally agree that we HAD to get this one…

However, by the time he pitched his 3rd inning we already had that 7 run lead. That means you could have safely gone to Anderson or someone else since we had the cushion. We would still have Silseth to fall back on… And Pineapple and I were really only complaining about the 3rd inning…. I did not have a problem with him pitching two innings.

The thing about the 3rd inning is that it means he is now unavailable tomorrow.

What if we need him tomorrow?

This could have been avoided…

The air seems fresher & the sun seems brighter when Michael Nelson Trout is playing like this.

Game balls to Jo, Oswald, MNT and Lowe. The latter’s 2-run bloop single during a long at bat, was HUGE at that moment.

5th Starter – I figure someone will emerge between the grab bag of Dana, Klassen & Rodriguez. I’m more concerned about getting Kikuchi back on track – or at least average. In Mike Maddux we trust…

Is it too early to cast about for a solid BP piece via trade?

This division seems open for the taking.

If not for the two games in this series the Angels coughed up, the Yankees would have a nine game losing streak.

A great bounce back win today, especially considering the Yanks started their best pitcher and Halos had a bullpen game.

Trout is only one of four players who has hit five homes in a series in Yankee stadium, including Jimmie Foxx. Elite company. Trout was hitting .195 at start of road trip, now hitting. 246.

Adell has had quite a couple of weeks.

Please don’t play Moncada anymore and no more Romano anytime soon.

I don’t consider myself a Moncada fan, but over his last 5 games he went 6 for 17 with a homerun, scored 4 runs, drove in 4 runs and had 4 walks vs 6 strikeouts. Doesn’t sound like a bat that needs to be benched to me.

Momcada is hitting. 170, 46% k rate, 9 hits for entire season, suspect defense. Doesn’t bring any speed to line up. Kills rallies. I would bench it consistently.

Yet Moncada is also getting on base about one third of time so he’s not completely without value in the lineup. If the numbers at this stage of the season are what counts, I’d rather have Lowe benched and put Frazier in leftfield than sit Moncada down.

Good stuff.

I’ll D-Ride Trout a bit more. What a difference 4 games makes. Coming into NYC, most of us were VERY concerned. Five homers – all clutch – and a .50 point swing in batting average later, and it all looks very different.

Looking forward to tomorrow night’s game. We’ll be there. If anyone is around, hit me up if you want to have an adult beverage before the game.

They have doing some damage for sure. Langston said since Trout changer his batting approach, he now plants his front foot and lifts his back foot up and down as pitcher delivers, his hitting has really taken off.

Keep Moncada out of line up.

Times have changed, it’s hard to get used to the lower numbers. Believe it or not, before today’s game. Trout’s OPS+ was 170, which is very close to his career number. After today it’s even higher. OPS+ is relative to the league and adjusts to league averages. For Trout’s career he is 69% better than average compared to his peers. Before the last couple of years, He was tied with Mickey Mantle at 72% better. At one point, Trout was actually at 73%. The last few years have really brought that down.

Thoughts in no particular order:

  • 2 blown saves shy of a sweep, oh what could have been.
  • That Trout guy is so hot right now
  • Neto seems to be the only hitter than hasn’t gotten with Brady’s program. He has gone backwards where the rest of the team is showing immensely improved patience.
  • Is Peraza this year’s Kyren or was that a slick trade by Perry? Not ready to get excited about this one yet but it’s been fun so far.
  • Suzuki absolutely sucks at managing the bullpen. I didn’t think it could get worse than Nevin here we are.
  • Absolutely LOVING the season Adell is having so far.
  • We really need a fifth starting pitcher.
  • Is the Angels offense legitimately one of the best in MLB or is this unsustainable? The team has feasted on some elite pitchers so far this year.

Nolan is the main laggard in the lineup. I have confidence he’ll get it going soon enough.

Actually, Nolan, O’Hoppe, and Lowe with OPS+s of 82, 83, and 49 respectively. Finding a replacement for Lowe and finding a 5th starter are two things that could make a real difference right now. For all the raving about Adell, he actually started the day with a lower OPS+ than he finished with last year. Today will definitely push that up. It will be interesting to see what he does going forward. He isn’t walking, so his OBA is completely driven by his BA and before the last few games, he only had 1 extra base hit, so he had a nice BA but nothing else. This series he’s started to pick up. Nolan’s performance as a major leaguer has been very consistent. He will likely end the year with an OPS+ between 105 and 110.

Lastly, as fun as the last 20 games have been, and they have been fun and entertaining, we had to win today to be .500, and we have done that with a lot of things going our way. If we played the rest of the season like we have so far, I would be very happy and consider the season a big success. There would be many things to be happy about with the potential to be better moving forward with a few key position player acquisitions.

With all that said, some of the things that have happened so far that have enabled us to be where we are, are not likely to be sustainable but I will enjoy it as long as it lasts even if it’s the whole season. It is also highly unlikely that most of the AL continues to play around .500 for the rest of the season. It would be a breath of fresh air though if the organization looked at things after the first 20 games and addressed the few things mentioned that could make us better and possibly help us play over .500. going forward.

I think we are legit offensively, though the K rate still needs to come down a bit. The Braves are the best pitching team in MLB and we scored 7 in our one win vs them…. The Yankees were one of the top pitching teams coming in to the series and we demolished them ! We have hit against some good teams, not all against slouches.

At this moment we are 2nd to only the Dodgers in HR’s. We are tied for 3rd in RUNS. And,we still lead in WALKS. Not bad.

I don’t like Suzuki. Romano needs to be pulled from the closer role. He blew a multi run lead. Had an opportunity again and blows it. Sure we made a big error but sometimes you need to pick up your team. This was his comments on Romano. The last couple games have been tough,” Suzuki said. “He was really good to start the year, and then the last couple games have been tough. We’ll probably take a look at it and see what’s going on.”
