LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Future Holds

The Angels released Ryan Miller which is seen as the move to make room on the 40 man roster for Kyle Hendricks. Even Perry Minasian is unsure about what the future holds for Matt Thaiss. Also in that link, Guillo Zuniga was designated for assignment. Here is where you can track each team’s offseason moves. So far it is the Perry Minasian show. Also in there, get a load of how many free agents the Mets lost.

This article ranks the MLB teams as free agent destinations and interestingly enough the Angels are about middle of the pack.

How pathetic am I? I already sat there having a daydream at work about sitting in front of these very same three screens with one of them following the MLB draft this summer…. and we drafted Clemson CF Cam Cannarella and Tennessee SS Dean Curley with our first two picks. then they announced Curley’s moving to 3B.

Christian Moore was stoked. I was stoked.

Why was I stoked? why am I thinking about this right now? It’s cold in here. Who says rainbows can’t be other colors? Feet are weird.

I’d also shit fire if we drafted Tyler Bremner. CHOS IN THE SHOW BABY!

Top four ranked OFs are all left-handed hitters which the Halos could use. I could easily see Bremmer being the guy. Going to be interesting watching next year’s college baseball especially if the Angels nab a top 3 pick.

Angels signed Kevin Newman:

Newman, 31, is coming off a solid year in a utility role with the D-backs, slashing .287/.311/.375 with three homers, 17 doubles and eight stolen bases in 111 games. He saw action at all four infield positions, including 55 games at short and 44 at second, as well as an appearance in left field.”

Is this Drury 2.1?
Placeholder at 2B after Neto’s return?
Sound back-up/spot starting player?

Everybody pissed on Canning but he was healthy all last year for this first time in his career. Had some bad numbers last year but in the right winning environment, could surprise.

Watching Perry this year is incredibly entertaining. It’s almost as if he’s providing his IIWPM contribution for real trying to fill holes with limited budget.

Tampa averaged 16,000 per game and, if other teams are an example, that might mean tickets sold but not necessarily attended. Anyway, this minor league place holds 11,000 so it’s still a drop-off for them

Who is watching the Tyson vs Paul fight tomorrow night? Is this going to be a farce? Gambling advice?

Can’t believe Mike Tyson is almost 60.

My advice in this fight would be to not gamble on it. Fairly unpredictable with no real information to rely upon. If you do bet, might as well bet small amounts on long shot propositions.

I still have $269,000,000 Eppei Bucks in my ShoheiBetts.com account. I’ll keep under $1,000,000.

I hope they actually hit it each other, even if it’s just for a round or 2.

Paul is going to win. Easy money at roughly -200.

58 year olds don’t beat 27 years that are bigger. Tyson will be gassed within 60 seconds so the only question is will Paul carry him to make it look better or smoke him quickly?

Casuals think Tyson is going to win. People that know the fight game know the truth. Like I said, easy money.

My take: it’s theatre. Tyson will get a few good punches in, but he’s being paid to lose.

Am I correct that with the acquisitions of Soler, Hendrick, Newman, Noda, Kingery and D’Arnaud the IIWPM starting/remaining budget is down to less than $20 million?

I just don’t see any of these guys moving the needle except maybe 1 or 2 games. It puts a team on the field, I guess. Seems like a very bizarre offseason with the Angels being active in the mediocrity market.

Wouldn’t we feel fresh and clean if we could magically trade away Trout and Rendon’s contracts? Like a day old baby? Sure, we’d still suck. Like said baby sucks at everything. But we’d just feel zazzy.

Yeah, then we’d overpay for Justin Turner and a few other players at the wall in their careers.

I am happy with all of the moves Perry has made so far. They provide depth and improvement on the margins. Our biggest problem is that are starting players aren’t very good and addressing that is going to take a few years.

With Randy, Gary or even Alfred E. still available, I’m hoping we picked the right Newman.

He fits right in, no power and no walks. He does give us a glove first 2B though, which we can use until Moore is ready. All the moves so far don’t really make us any more competitive but they do give us professional depth instead 4A depth.

I’m actually okay with this in case Neto misses the first month or the rest of the year, and will serve as a bench piece who can competently cover the infield in the event of other injuries if/when Neto is able to return at some point.

Hes nothing more than a glove first utility player who hits adequately against LHP’s also hits better as a sub/PH than as a starter.

Perfect late inning defensive replacement to ensure Rengifo doesn’t help botch any late game leads.

He also produced 2.2 WAR last season.

We got him on a 1-year deal + club option. AND we get Seinfeld references? How can you not like this haha

Senator_John_Blutarsky

He’s perhaps the finest acquisition Perry has made today, so I’m really “all in” on Newman.

That said – he’s an below average hitter with an above average glove. He doesn’t make the team better since he’s really backfill for a 5 WAR player (Neto).

I remain perfectly fine with the “not rebuilding, rebuilding” mode Perry is in. He’s doing what’s necessary to hold the line while “not” rebuilding.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yeah, but none of that above replacement level WAR makes me feel like a real man, so screw stats and math and stuff, it means nothing to me.

If Kevin Newman were going to be a defensive replacement that pinch runs for someone in late innings, then he’d be a nice depth piece. The problem isn’t Kevin Newman, the problem is that on the Angels he’s basically guaranteed to be a full-time starter rather than a bench piece.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I actually had this guy on my list of cheap and useful players to maybe use for my now totally screwed IIWPM….

One year deal with a 2026 option on a guy who can play SS (weakly), 2B, 3B, 1B and even stand in the outfield with a glove on all with an BA around .260 and an OBP of over .300 and solid base running. Just zero power. In other words, a utility bench piece.

I liked Newman in the Pirates system. He’s very grit pump. He’s useful but not exciting now. A Honda Civic base model. This is actually another good pick up on a team that may need to move guys around to try prospects or replace guys in game or cover for Rendon self combusting.

I know this is not the exciting pick that old men desperate to feel like winners again before they pass on to their eternal reward are yearning for, but it is useful. Like a jar of Bubbies Pickles. Always nice to have around. No more Jack Lopez. Maybe trade Rengifo for kids. Fine with me.

Read an article about Max Fried being a target this year. I wouldn’t give it too much credence, but the author did point out the recent additions of D’Arnaud and coach Fasano could be a deciding factor. Still don’t think it will happen, but I’ll keep my hopeium pipe nearby.

Sporting News saying Phillies are all in for trading for Mike Trout. Good luck with that, their payroll is already too high and would require Angels to eat a majority of what’s left on his contract.

Not likely but you just never know. When somebody want’s something and they’re willing to pay for it almost anything can happen. But Trout would have to agree.

The Phillies have been generous to Perry in the trades consummated to date. If Trout ever wants out, Dave would be the first GM to call.

Better than him driving me to manic depression.

In reality, I’d really really like him to be healthy enough to play a few more years with at least solid output…. then be a financial drag anchor for a couple years, maybe make some stupid peevish comments to the press about how he’s being underused when he’s old and shitty, make some high maintenance demands for very little production. Then retire, go into the HOF an Angel…. the standard old star shit. The Pujols plan.

But if he doesn’t get on that train soon…..
