LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Thaiss, Thaiss Baby!

Taylor Ward made Mark Feinsand’s “All Trade Rumor Team.” The Angels hired utility infielder Kevin Newman. It looks to me like Rengifo is going to third base and Rendon mostly comes off of the bench during brawls.

No love lost between Jesse Winker and Anthony Rendon #mariners #angels #brawl #punch

To make room for Newman, Matt Thaiss was designated for assignment. Somehow no Angels are up for the Cy Young Award this year. The Angels came to an arrangement with Scott Kingery, thereby avoiding arbitration.

Chris Sale and Garrett Crochet are your Comeback Players of the Year.

Oh no! Charles Leblanc is off the board! He just got a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves.

The Tampa Bay Rays will be playing at the Yankees spring training facility next season. Will they become the Tampa Bay Rainouts?

Diamond Sports Group got their bankruptcy plan confirmed. That’s that. Get your stream on at Amazon Prime. The Reds made an arrangement to have MLB do their games and there will be no blackouts on the streaming.

Who knows how it turns out, but it seems that we got a lot for Luis Garcia.

Some fan sight has posted today that the Juan Soto sweepstakes has come down to just two teams-duh-and that they both reside in – you guessed it right, NEW YORK! Funny stuff, but only the Mets can offer enough money to get him unless he wants to win with Judge. The Dodgers are not offering contracts to a few very good players as dropping down the payroll looks good to them; the Padres are already way above their heads financially and the Giants can’t afford Soto either. I think that the world of financial restraint is starting to set in as the “cap” keeps raising and the teams are seeing the reality that they just can’t go that high. It may be entertainment but it’s still a business and the prospect of losing money is not good business unless your last name is Cohn.

You would think at some point they would start to wise up regarding contracts after 30 and especially after 35.

Well, reportedly Rendon’s picture came don off the stadium recently. Maybe if the Angels can just stall until maybe the third or fourth week of the season, Rendone won’t even be in the team photo.

Neto is our modern day Jim Fregosi, the one good player on a bad team.

Fregosi, by the way, played during most of the same time as Luis Aparicio. He was nearly as good defensively and far superior as a hitter 82 OPS+ vs 113OPS+. He received MVP votes 8 times. Aparicio is in the HOF. I think Fregosi belongs as well especially when compared to the SS during the time he played.

Do his lips taste of strawberries?

We talk about the semi-really good guy who left the Angels before most of us were born a lot around here….

Fregosi is RC Cola. Does RC Cola suck? No…. not that I know of. Does anyone care about RC Cola? No. Not really.

A lot of us care about the history of the team and Fregosi is an important part of that history.

Pathetic CtPG loser guy says you couldn’t be any more wrong about your take on Fregosi. He engineered the second most important date in Angels history. September 25, 1979 is second only to October 27, 2002.

Then of course, he also engineered the quick loss to Baltimore in the playoffs, yes? I love me some #11 but let’s not elevate him into someone he wasn’t.

Exactly. Fregosi was plenty good. And he’s old, so I guess he’s part of history. But he’s only important to people who really really want to bring him up.

O’ Hoppe wants to speak with you.

I’ve been thinking a lot about O’Hoppe lately and he has a lot to prove. He went from a 112 OPS+ his 1st year to a 100 OPS+ last year and his SLG% went from .500 to .409. He never slugged his 2nd year anything close to his rookie season and he’s not a defense 1st catcher. He showed promise as about 4 months in he had a 120 OPS+ and an .800 OPS, and then he hit .100 for a month and half. The guy we got from Atlanta is currently our best catcher. He’s superior defensively and he was a slightly better hitter last year. O’Hoppe needs to step up. He is an unknown as a hitter until he proves differently. I would feel a lot different if had matched or improved upon his 1st year. His performance is currently a question mark. What he is and will be is complete speculation at this point. Right now, other than Trout, Neto is the only good player based on numerical performance. I realize good is a subjective term until we specifically define it. O’Hoppe will be the staring catcher this year, but with the new guy we got, he will lose playing time if he doesn’t perform. He doesn’t have Thaiss behind him anymore. I like this move by Perry. I think some of our young players need a little more sense of urgency.

And his K rate per Plate appearance went way up too. (22% to 30%)

I dont think thats a coincidence.

I’m an O’Hoppe fan. I want him to succeed and be the hitter I think he can be, but last year was disappointing.

Still think that O’Hoppe, Neto, Schanuel are all kids….they have a change to improve. We finally (hopefully) have a manager and staff that can instruct. Thinking that we finally have an emphasis on development and a better chance for success.

Most likely was was ground into the dirt by playing so much the first half.

There’s also a good shot pitchers made some adjustments in how they faced him.

He now has a timeshare partner. So hopefully that helps.

Well. Our new catcher thinks he’s pretty awesome. I think he just got tired. He’ll probably hit better this year with rest. If he can pull off a .750 OPS I’ll be stoked. Especially if his defense gets a little better.

Logan’s also very “team captainish”

Neto was listed as a top 10 SS. That’s pretty cool…. I think like #7 or something. So that’s a good start to a career.

I’m more interested in the pricing that Art will receive as part of this deal. He must’ve taken a haircut, but at this point, I don’t think we know how much that haircut was. I suspect much of the payroll decisions will be related to how much less broadcasting revenue he will receive.

Somewhere, I read it’s just a trim and isn’t expected to affect the budget much. I’m guessing that means the new contract will require TJ surgery and will be out for 18 months.

I think the best way to get our farm system to jump about ten spots in the rankings is to either make them wear royal blue or dark blue pinstripes. Then a 40 grade prospect becomes a 45 by default…..

The term “expert” has lost all meaning. Anyone who manages to be seen on TV and/or has earned the title of “influencer” is paraded before us rubes as bing an “expert”. In most cases, they don’t know anymore than we do.

Until he proves differently, Moore is a big concern. He may disprove all the naysayers though but He was a risky pick.

why are you concerned? Health? I’ll take his AA stats, .322 avg., .533 slugging, .911 OPS. That doesn’t concern me at all.

SchofieldsWalkoff

He had a 30% strike out rate in his 1st 110 professional at bats so some people are wringing their hand in angst.

If he can translate his MiLB numbers, or come close, in the bigs, I can live with a 30% SO rate if he mashes near .300ish with power.

if hes striking 30% in A & AA that probably projects into a 40% K rate in the majors.

Can you live with that?

Do you believe that the 1st 110 at bats represent his true ability?

I believe its a stronger indicator that he needs more seasoning in the minor leagues.

Roy Hobbs

The short answer is no one knows but his strike out rate was consistent with his college strikeout rate and typically players strikeout rates go up as they advance. When you consider that he’s not a defensive gem and that he doesn’t compare well historically with other 2B, there is reason to be cautious. No one is saying he won’t or can’t be really good, just that there are some red flags. We all hope he will be great and are certainly rooting for him. Howie Kendrick was a hit machine in the minors and nothing close to that in the majors. Just as a comparison, his AA stats were not close to O’Hoppe”s at the same age and so far Logan is not a hit star.

No one is wringing their hands as he’s only had 110 ABs, but he’s a long way right now from stepping in at 2B. If the Angels were smart, they would give him a full year in the minors next year and project to a 2026 arrival.

This is a wordy way of saying what 26 said.

Roy Hobbs

Jo Adell had some pretty good minor league numbers as well and Moore’s K has always been high. I’m not saying he can’t or won’t be good, just that there are legitimate concerns until he proves otherwise.
