LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Suarez Gone

Jose Suarez and Cole Tucker are designated for assignment. Zach Plesac and Brandon Drury are in.

Here is how the All Star voting is going so far.

Veteran reliever Diego Castillo is now a free agent after being designated for assignment by the Twins. The Mets released Thomas Nido.

The Braves have their share of pitching woes. They just placed Hurston Waldrep on the injured list for elbow inflammation. They also have outfielder Michael Harris II on the IL with hamstring problems. Anthony Rizzo has an arm fracture. Yimi Garcia is on the 15 day IL with right elbow ulnar neuritis. Mookie Betts will likely miss six to eight weeks with his broken hand.

I was slightly too young to have seen Mays in his prime. I saw him at the end of his career with the Mets, which just felt wrong. Say Hey Kid was a Giant…in every sense of the word.

Arguably the greatest all-around player ever.

Like NASA launches in the 60’s, it’s hard even with the miles of film around, to give others a sense of what a thrill it was watching him play. Basket catches! The too small cap flying off as he rounded 2nd, showing off that incredible speed. Big, looping home runs. He was, is, and always will be: The Greatest of All Time.

Trout now says his injury is taking a longer time to heal than expected. See you next year, Trout.

After undergoing surgery last month to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout is learning to be patient with his recovery.

“It’s getting there, obviously slower than I thought, but it’s my first time with a knee injury,” Trout told reporters on Tuesday. “Just gotta trust the process and take it day by day.”

While Trout’s recovery is taking longer than he expected, he added an update that surely won’t make Angels fans happy. The three-time AL MVP said he still doesn’t have a timeline for his return and hasn’t even started running yet.

I had meniscus surgery in September and didn’t complete therapy until February and my case didn’t have serious complications. This could take some time.

My wife, who is about your age, had the same surgery 10 years ago and recovered much faster than Trout. He’s 32, you’d think he was 60. There is no reason for him to hurry back, but I’m almost starting to look at him like Rendon. He can’t stay on the field.

this led to that which led to the other which led me to Chuck Klein and boy does his career look like Trout’s! Lots of black ink and then once past 28 years old his games slowed down.

29 yrs old – 115 games
30 yrs old – 119
31 yrs old – 146
32 yrs old – 115
33 yrs old – 129
34 yrs old – 110

I know that’s even more than Trout. But he looked like an all-time great through age 28, then became a good player until 32 with fewer games.

Why would any fan of the Angels hope for a shot at a .500 season with nothing to add to it next year? The cupboard is bare, time to think of the future, not the same old stuff, 10 seasons of the same crap is proof that it’s time to change the established pattern to something hopeful and positive. I’ll scream my lungs out if PTP plays the money signing game on draft day, I’ll scream even louder from the top of the mountain if the Angels hold on to what they got. (3 exceptions maybe for O’Hoppe, Neto, Soriano)

Find some defensive catching and teach O’Hoppe 3rd base, Torre made the HoF doing it, the kid has the stick. Schanuel is as I read and agree with, a Casey Kotchman. The Dodgers have talent to spare, trade Rengifo to them to play SS and Anderson for young arms and some control, Anderson signed on here for 2 seasons. Atlanta needs OF help, trade Ward to them. Sandoval and Detmers and Canning can bring some good prospects too.

I’m never going to die because you can’t hurt steel.

Still, isn’t it more fun watching these kids than last year and the year before? This is why I like the Reds/Pirates/Tigers/Rays. BUT the Angels are even better for a fan like me because we aren’t developing guys so we can send them to richer teams in six years. From a “spiritual” sense I think O’Hoppe, Neto, Adell etc etc are a great core and we should keep adding to them accordingly. Even ShamWow, at 1B or in the OF. It’s a good start, let’s keep going even if it means .500 is a couple years away.

Ok Gramps, your plan is to trade the entire starting staff plus Rengifo and Ward for “hot prospects” plus move O’Hoppe to 3B and replace him at catcher with who knows???! Part of O’Hoppe’s value is he’s a catcher of course. He becomes a lot more mediocre once he moves.

Overall, your plan is to be good maybe in 2030 if you’re lucky. It will take multiple years to get prospects to the majors for starting pitchers and then years for them to become good, barring something incredible happening. I don’t see the plan happening nor being a good one.

I watch sports to be entertained. If the teams experience any success, then that is super. If they make the playoffs, well, that’s just gravy.

I have zero expectations for this team and even less that Perry will make a significant trade with the few tradeable assets on the team.

If you want Perry to gamble with Anderson, Rengifo and Drury, then fine. Kiss them goodbye, but don’t be sad when the magic beans he gets for them turn out to be only lima beans.

For all that is holy, do not trade Ward. There has to be one decent veteran left on this team to provide any hope for a victory.

I’ll be honest, the season is already going to go much better for me now that Suarez is gone.

This team will be bad as long as Arte owns it. Once he sells, then I can get excited about drafting and trades that could possibly bring in young talent.

The next position player move will be the activation of Sano with the plumber being sent down.

Baring a trade a trade or injury I would then anticipate seeing the activation of Rendone and the DFAing of Guillorme.

At this point it would take lot of failure for Schanny to be sent to the Great Salt Lake.

An OPS of .655 at the first base position is a pretty significant amount of failure IMO

Send him down and let him re-work his swing.

But from a playing time perspective though:

Rendon – 3B
Drury – 2B
Nolan – 1B
Rengifo – ??????

Where does that leave Rengifo, arguably the best offensive player of the team right now?

That’s why I see Nolan getting sent down, if only for a short while, to be able to “showcase” both Rengifo and Drury to potential trade partners by being able to play them everyday.

Then after the trade deadline, Nolan will be called back up again.

If I would DH someone more, leading to the trade deadline, it would be Ward. I’d let Moniak-Pillar-Adell man the outfield everyday.

Ward is one sliding catch or collision to the OF wall away from the IL. We ding on Trout for being injury-prone?! Ward isn’t any better (though last year was a horrible freaky accident).

Smithy, I assume you know your Moniak, Adell, Pillar outfield becomes the worst offensive outfield in baseball plus maybe the worst in the league in the last several years offensively. Don’t plan to see it. BTW expect Pillar to be moved to the Braves or the like.

And the OF we have right now is bursting with offensive production?! This team is going nowhere. Whether Ward is in the OF or he’s traded, that won’t be the difference in the Angels making the playoffs or not this year. So might as well play Moniak and Adell everyday, and hope they catch some lightning in a bottle.

When Trout comes back, I expect Pillar to be the 4th OF, or to rotate with Mickey. If Pillar is shipped out, I expect Jordyn Adams to take a spot on the bench.

He doesn’t make any sense. On the one hand, he finally admits that it’s a rebuild and is going to take longer than people expect, which I agree with. Not sure if longer means years or not. But at the same time, he says the team is not performing as he expected, like he’s surprised. No one here is surprised. Pretty much everything that has happened this year is almost completely predictable. It’s not even disappointing, it’s just a work in progress. We all know that the biggest problem we have is that our players are not as good as most other teams. It’s a talent issue. That’s not to say that there are not a bunch of other issues but more talented players can help cover up those other problems. It’s not going to be happen by next year. They can improve though.

Prospects with the best power-speed combo — one for each team

https://www.mlb.com/news/best-power-speed-combination-for-each-organization-2024

Another reason we need to get a Bat with our #1 pick.

Angels: Joswa Lugo, SS, (No. 7)
We’re going deep dive into pure upside and ceiling here given that Lugo, who signed for $2.3 million just this past January, has a grand total of six Dominican Summer League games under his belt as of this writing. He’s off to a very good start (8-for-22 with five doubles and a home run to go along with two stolen bases), but we’re more looking at the potential for him to have at least above-average power and decent speed, though there is some concern he’ll slow down a tick as he matures.

Enjoy the wins, after the trade deadline we will be one of the worst clubs. Angels could become one of those teams praying the prospects acquired and draft picks turn out to be MLB players, for years. Hello Rockies,Reds and A’s. At least that means cheap tickets. Arte is hurting but StubHub making bank. Those cheap Angels tickets have an average of 55% service charge. For Wed game my $13 tix had a $7 fee. Rip off

Depends on Arte. The A’s and like have sucked forever because they don’t lock up their young talent with extension so they constantly had to fill tons of holes.

The Braves and Brewers have been good for quite a while because they lock up and extend their young talent. And Houston obviously shelled out to keep its core together. If the right guys are kept, the team could be good again and for a while.

The Rockies are a good Arte comp because they never stick to a plan. They rebuild and then sign Bryant for huge money. Just utter stupidity.

If after the trade deadline we moved a few players that makes us better in the long run. I don’t give a rats patootie what our record is (Kinda do actually) for the rest of 2024. The problem is if Reneeeeeefo, Ward, *Drury, *Sandoval, *Adell, *Pillar and Anderson are moved, we’re gonna have some ugly line-ups.

Some guys are gonna come up and be overwhelmed and possibly ruined (i.e. J. Adams). The flipside is that Moniak and Adell will have the rest of the season to audition for an MLB roster next year.

*It can happen with the right team

Rengifo should get some ASG love but his lack of a true position will keep him off the squad.

After Perez, Rutschman will be the next man up. But O’Hoppe should be in the Top 3.

The issue is there are more “popular” picks than O’Hoppe. Not just among the fans, but among the players as well.

One way I can see O’Hoppe getting in is if he has an offensive explosion the rest of June that it will be hard to ignore, then players will most likely vote him in.

A team this bad really shouldn’t have All-Star representation. Selecting someone just because every team must have one representative ultimately diminishes those players who truly have distinguished themselves through truly high performance.
