LA Angels Monday News Crash: Youth Participation

MLB fandom is gradually getting younger as both rule changes and engaging the yutes are both having an effect. The Orioles, though, went another way. They optioned their youth Jackson Holliday down to Triple-A.

Anthony Rendon has a small tear in his hamstring and will be out of action for quite a while. The Angels selected Zac Kristofak and placed Jose Cisnero on the 15 IL with right shoulder inflammation. They also designated Jimmy Herget for assignment.

The Phillies designated Ricardo Pinto for assignment. He’s bad at pitching. The White Sox selected Brad Keller and designated Deivi Garcia for assignment. The Red Sox designated Joely Rodriguez for assignment.

Wade Miley is the latest pitcher to have Tommy John surgery. Avisail Garcia went on the ten day IL with a left hamstring strain.

Angels need to shore up the pen. Start scanning rosters and make a move. Rosenberg could come up and be a swing man, long relief. Suarez needs a complement or flat out replacement. I think the offense, while struggling has potential.

Someone has probably already posted the lineup, but man, this is interesting. Desperate & interesting.

Adell in the 2 hole. Angels front ending our true power hitters. I like the element of Speed & Power at 1-2.

WTF is a Cole Tucker?

Someone put out missing persons report on Drury. Geez.

Huge hitting problems at DH and 3B. Drury was a big league hitter the past couple of years at least. I guess that they don’t want Moniak to bat at all against lefties. Schaneul should be in there even against lefties. Dumping Hicks was a good move but the organizational depth is appalling.

I’d rather have Moniak on the field – I think his defense is better than Adell’s – and have Adell get most of the DH at-bats, save for the Trout/Ward DH days. I’m not ready to give up on Moniak yet. From what I saw last year, he seems to be a rhythm hitter, and he hasn’t had the chance to play a lot of consecutive games yet to get that rhythm. I’d rather the team see what they have in Moniak as an everyday player, rather than trying to rotate through fringe bargain bins once again, for whom there’s no incentive to see through (i.e. Hicks).

But I do appreciate them rolling out Adell in the field – it’s the only way he’ll improve his defense and fielding. We’ll suffer through the occasional blunders, but this is part of the “play the kids” mantra that a lot of people want anyway.

The Angels aren’t making the playoffs this season, so as long as Adell is hitting well enough to stay on the team, they might as well play Adell in the field to let him improve.

Agree. The fact that Hicks is absorbing at bats that should be going to Adell AND Moniak is unfortunate. And stupid, particularly since Hicks isn’t hitting well anyway

I don’t think any back and forth we’ve had has been fighting. So nothing to apologize for, I enjoy the cup checks. Keep doing you and feel free to call me out!

As someone who has shit on Rendon in previous years (and rightfully got called out with ‘what has he done, kicked your dog’ replies) I know I can improve on my diatribes at times. I’ve crapped on Trouts leadership, not just in the clubhouse but in things that have happened in his personal life. And you know what, he might be a big part in the ‘stay in the game’ campaigns I see on Bally Sports West. I watch other broadcasts and can tell you they much rather pimp out gambling links than Jesus washed feet commercials. I know he has a few different things going to honor his late BIL and still gets emotional talking about it. So I’ve been wrong plenty of times. I don’t need to beat my chest for things that have gone wrong/right.

You were (ST) and have been for Sano and I saw him make an outstanding defensive play during Wednesdays day game. He hits the ball hard too! And I did think of you and am happy anytime one of our players does well/a shot called on the interwebs is right. We just don’t need 10+ laughing emojis for when one of ours goes down (no matter how unliked they may be) or shout it from the rooftops if someone loses their job.

You’re a good contributor around here and I’m always down to talk Halos or baseball in general. My bad if I come across as a dick, I’m a recovering asshole.

Where does Perry get these guys. Nothing personel, but Cole tucker is 27 and a former pirate who has been in the majors about as long as Jo Adell with about 175 fewer ABs. He is less than replacement level with a 57 career OPS+ and negative WAR. We literally don’t have enough of our own drafted minor league players to fill out our roster. We really have absolutely no organizational position player depth.

over at mlb dot com there’s an article about Kristofak that says he was called up because of our depleted relief situation. Now I’m wondering is that because of injuries? Cisnero, I guess, but does one injury makes the staff depleted? Or is it because we have to have so many long relief outings? Probably that. Maybe.

Angelstan

It’s going to be a tornado of relief moves this season. Stephenson was the only reliable option via talent. He’s gone. Estevez can close ok but that’s it. The rest is just a bunch of lower tier guys — some coming off prior injuries. Moore is ok as a lefty who can pitch a couple times a week. The rest is a crapshoot.

I hear you. I’ve been a fan since the 80’s and this is the first time I’m kind of losing interest in baseball, which makes me feel sad inside to type out here, especially because it is April, and each year I’m so excited when spring comes and a new season is starting.

In the past, we’ve had some crumby teams, but somehow I’ve always had the hope that we’d catch fire and win a bunch and have an exciting season, and even if we missed the playoffs I’d see exciting building blocks being developed.

But now I just see a crumby team and I don’t think the owner really gives a hoot. I think the team could toil like this for more years. Or if he does give a hoot, his philosophy for building a good team is totally disconnected from reality, and isn’t working, and it doesn’t look like he is realizing that.

I just know that I came to the realization the other night that I need to notch down my expectations and excitement. Because I would get into a cycle where I’d see the game, get frustrated, come on this site and vent and/or read the venting of others, and then rinse and repeat the next night. I don’t need that cycle of negativity in my mind every day. I think I’ll transition to more of laughing it off and not caring anymore.

Honestly, it is likely, given how some of our ’90s teams were so stinky, that I used to just experience baseball like that as a norm. But I got spoiled with the domination of our 2000’s teams that I came to expect it, and forgot how to be an Angels fan.

I think we can safely say that Arte has no plans, no philosophy for building a good team. He doesn’t make the connection that winning is the best way to get fans into the stadium. Sad, I know.

I have loved the Angels since my first game with my dad in 1971.

That said, I’m much older and wiser now and realize I can love the Angels and have such disdain and disrespect for the Org that I just put my diehard fanship to the side. I can’t invest emotionally in an Org that is so poorly run at all levels and in every way. I still love the Angels but I can separate that emotion from the realities that it’s not worth getting emotionally invested at this time. If different ownership emerges, I’ll reconsider reconnecting to the avid level I was before.

Wow.

I was reasonably young in 2002. Shortly afterwards, “Moneybags” Arte took over, and we signed Colon, Vlad, Kelvim, etc., and I had it in my mind that the team was going to be big contenders throughout most of my adult life (“Yankees of the west”). Gee, that didn’t exactly pan out. 😁
At least I enjoyed really good years during the 2000’s.

I play 3rd base on my softball team. The problem I’d have at the major league level would be making the throw to first. I’d have to Eck it…you know, kind of the way Eckstein made the play at shortstop. It would still look like a lob, though.

The point is, going 6-14 once out of a 20 game stretch does not kill your season if you play .600 baseball from that point forward. But doing it more than once in a season does not bode well.

I’d prefer they’d bring it out for well-executed situational hitting or for a pitcher getting out of a jam caused by bad fielding or umping, or keeping us close after a starter was removed.
