LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Injuries In Division

Corey Seager is going to a back specialist. There is not yet much detail as to what is wrong or how long he has been dealing with the issue. Jose Altuve is now on the injured list with an oblique strain. Cal Raleigh hit the injured list with “general soreness” in his side.

Keston Hiura signed with the Kiwoom Heroes for the remainder of 2026. The Cubs just claimed right-hander Christian Roa. The Orioles claimed Michael Siani off waivers from the Dodgers. They designated right-hander Jose Espada for assignment.

Gio Urshela announced his retirement. Royals lefty Kris Bubic is on the IL with left elbow soreness.

I know some of you are avidly watching the college stats as we approach the draft. This is “Draft Stock Watch.”

Here is a fantasy article about starting pitchers gainers and decliners. Jack Kochanowicz is a gainer.

Lost in this it’s kinda wild the A’s left Ginn in after the no-hitter attempt was broken up. He was at 102 pitches, so what was the plan? Were they gonna let him go 110+ pitches to finish the game facing the lineup a 4th time through the order?

Suzuki level dummm.

He got through the line-up 3-times. Why not give him a chance for history? I applaud pushing back on the pitch count nerds. Breath of fresh air.

Oh, I see. Did the A’s have someone ready to come in? I don’t recall.

Frazier hit a ball out of the strike zone at a Gubi reported 102 MPH, not exactly screaming meltdown alert. Hindsight. .

I don’t, either, but they should have. The top of the 9th took quite a while, the game was 1-0, and Ginn was at a career high in pitches.

Once Frazier got his hit it flipped the lineup over for Neto and Trout.

That was a perfect time to hand the ball to your closer.

He still had a chance for a CG shutout. Until that Neto swing, the Angles demonstrated little ability to anything offensively.

He was already beyond his career high in pitches. The shutout isn’t important enough to risk the game. Had it been 4-0 sure but once Frazier got his hit the win was in jeopardy. Maybe the A’s pen is like ours and the alternative would be worse than a tired starter

Thing is, he got hit hard in the 8th and was more lucky than good at that point. Once he gave up the hit, he should have been replaced and not doing so was Suzukiesque.

Classic case of the Angels sucking so bad lulled them into a sense of comfort. If that were the Doyers or Yankees or almost any other team they would have had a fresh arm heated and ready to go. Since we suck so much the perceived threat level was low so we got Ginn on fumes trying to get history on our sorry asses. It backfired for once.

Exactly. I applaud the decision to give him a chance at the no hitter.

But once that was off the table the team still had a 1-0 game to win.

0.3 WAR

Walbert in May —

I think we have something extremely special with Wally. Winning Rookie of the Year would net us a very valuable 2027 compensation pick that comes after the 1st round. It will be an uphill battle with McGonigle (Tigers) and Murakami (White Sox) lighting it up, but who knows.

#1 draft lottery odds + a comp pick would be a nice welcome present for our next GM.

I worry he can keep it going without really having another pitch. He’s throwing the changeup like 45% of the time and pretty much everything else is a fastball. Not sure if the 4-seamer and the sinker are different enough to keep hitters on their toes.

I think he has a bright future though. I’ve been impressed with his mental makeup and how calm he appears to be out on the mound.

I see — well this is bullshit lol. Urena is ineligible because the prospect lists couldn’t recognize his immense talent /s. Thanks for the fact check!

How does one become PPI-eligible?

Eligibility is based on the preseason rankings. Eligible prospects have to appear on at least two of the three Top 100 Prospect rankings released by MLB Pipeline, Baseball America and ESPN. Those players must be rookie-eligible and have fewer than 60 days of prior MLB service, which is also the stipulation MLB Pipeline makes in crafting its Top 100 rankings. MLB Pipeline unveiled its new Top 100 in late January. Baseball America and ESPN have also released theirs to fill out the field from which PPI eligibility will be granted.

it’s a way for teams to stop holding their high ranked prospects that might be ready in the minors for extra service time. Example: Kris Bryant

and to be fair, it was agreed on by the MLBPA

I am failing to see how a consensus top-100 prospect ranking as a prerequisite for PPI would have any impact on how long players would stay in the minors.

If anything it seems like it would force teams to hold players in the minors longer. If someone is a top 100 prospect in BA but not the other two, you would be inclined to hold them in the minors until they show up on additional lists so that they are eligible.

the likelihood of winning ROY is low regardless of when someone is called up.

This is to push some of those teams with uber prospects to get them up early.

Fringe top 100 guys are not really in consideration for ROY, let alone being called up early (often times in low minors)

What happened to these former Cal State Fullerton Players who have become MLB managers. Nevin, Suzuki, Kotsay, they’re all bad. It was fine leaving the pitcher in for one hit with the no hitter going but to not have someone ready after the hit was absolutely inexcusable. I went to Fullerton when Garrido was there. He was very knowledgable and knew what he was doing. He was way ahead of his time. I’m just glad he’s not alive to watch this.

I thought he’d be a positive too. Very quickly became obvious that he has no clue what he’s doing. To boot he has the personality and intelligence of a wet plank.

I was watching some preseason interview where Trout and Adell were talking about being happy that Suzuki would give the team days to come to park when they wanted and leave when they wanted. That was a massive red blinking warning sign.

This team has done nothing to earn that type of leeway and it established a laissez faire attitude from the jump that we all see playing out on the field. I’ll keep coming back to Wash because he was trying to establish a culture and belief. A 70 year old man was showing up to ballpark before anyone else every single day, and was running drills with the players. He walked the walk, he led by example.

Suzuki is a friend of the players, he’s not a manager. The example he’s set this year is “come and go when you please, things will work out or they won’t. It’s all chill brother, Mahalo”

My problem with Wash was that he was supposed to teach the team the fundamentals, which is truly sad in itself.

However, it was clear that the team didn’t know the fundamentals and when an situation would pop up on the field, he would throw the player under the bus.

If Neto could fetch us a young, high potential 3rd baseman, I’d trade him in a heartbeat.

GrandpaBaseball

Neto is our best player and here is why. Neto boots balls that other SS can’t even get to and goes to his right better than just about every SS in the major leagues. Has field and play IQ that very few have at any position. He has speed and power, a rare commodity to have. In addition, we have no replacement currently that is anywhere near as talented. After Simba we had junk heap SS for too many seasons. Neto is a bright spot on a losing team that we need to hold on to.

Pineapple12
Legend

Neto is a fine ballplayer but I’m not sure the numbers back up your claim that he’s an excellent defender and the eye test surely doesn’t support him having a high baseball IQ.

I’d trade him 10/10 times before handing him $200 million. He’s immature and you can tell his massive ego has been hurt by his shitty play (to the standard he’s set for himself) this year.

None of Neto, Adell, Schanuel, O’Hoppe are worth keeping around imo.

GrandpaBaseball
Legend
Reply to  Pineapple12

We all have our own takes on Zack. O’Hoppe is a lost cause, Schanuel has not progressed as I hoped for this season, but Adell is still a keeper because of his glove in RF. We do not have replacements for our players right now and have to hope for some hot streaks that may be coming, otherwise we lose 120 games. With a strike/lockout on the horizon and fast approaching it will be hard to find homes for our players at a decent return.

In terms of money paid, I am not sure at what value any player should make anymore and have the opinion that no player and especially pitchers, should be signed longer at best for more than 5 years.

“After Simba we had junk heap SS for too many seasons.” Simba’s last season was 2020 and Neto’s was 2023.

That’s only 2 years of a “junk heap.” SS has been far from the Angels’ biggest problem. Although without Neto it could quickly become another gaping void.

I think if I am a GM looking to get Neto in a trade I would ask myself if Neto is coachable and will he listen and change what he does. Neto has 68 strikeouts, four off the league most strikeouts per latest B-Ref list. I think he believes he is A-Rod. “I hit a walk off HR last night and won the game. I’m A-Rod.”
No Zach, you are not. I think someone needs to say that to him and start benching him if he doesn’t hit the ball more. Want to be a clubhouse leader? Change your game to what your physique is. Hit the ball, get on base.

Imho, if he keeps playing as he is and has, he wouldn’t return a top 100 prospect. I think Denzer needs at least two more years in the minors to see if he could even be a utility player.

HalosFanForLife

i’ve been a huge fan of Neto. But he’s off from previous years. He’s middle of the pack this year. 8 errors. Bobby Witt Jr has 1 and gets to balls Neto can only dream of. What does Witt do in the offseason? He works with Nate Trosky, and brings in his teammates. And Witt already got paid and could coast. Witt was the worst defensive shortstop in the league his first year – started working with him – and clearly on his own too – and now he’s a Platinum Glove winner. 8 errors in 30% of the games is unacceptable. And I’ll guarantee you this, go look at the infield singles and you’ll be surprised some were considered hits. He should have at least 10, but they are padding league averages by awarding a lot of balls that were always considered errors as hits now.

Let me give you what I totally agree with you on. Neto has great baseball IQ – and plays with an engine few can match. Love his style – but he has to clean it up.

I think this is the most accurate take. I don’t think he’s as sloppy or low IQ as some others on here. This season has been way below average for him, for sure, but I don’t think this year is indicative of his talent.

And I’m definitely not going to complain about the passion he plays with when 80% of this roster is just drifting along.

I think maybe he’s pressing because he knows the team is ass and feels like he has to do everything. Last season he kind of usurped the team leader role from Trout and he might be struggling with that. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.
