LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Buyers!

The Angels are apparently buying in the trade deadline market. Welcome to Lucas Giolito. Shohei Ohtani is officially off the market. We’ll be having a doubleheader today. Shohei Ohtani goes up against Michael Lorenzen.

Here you can find the Angels 2024 Spring Training Calendar.

The Angels are in discussions with the Nationals for a third baseman. The Red Sox got Mauricio Llovera from the Giants. The Dodgers traded Noah Syndergaard to the Guardians tor Amed Rosario. The Twins and Marlins swapped relief pitchers Jorge Lopez and Dylan Floro.

The Astros activated Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve.

How? They’d have to trade Ohtani to get prospects to trade for Rodriguez or Stroman.

Here’s my plan: Give Ohtani 1 extra day rest so he pitches next Thursday against the Mariners rather than Wednesday against the Braves. That lines him up to pitch in important games against potential wild card competitors (Seattle x2, Texas x2, Cleveland x1, TB x1) and puts him in line to pitch the last game of the season.

He obviously skips the last start if the Angels have clinched the playoffs, maximizes the chances if it is a must-win, and if the Angels have been eliminated, it means Ohtani’s potentially last game as an Angel is as both a pitcher and a hitter.

I am getting all confused, but with Walsh DFA’d, and Joyce being moved to 60D IL, we can still add Weiss without any more corresponding move, assuming that Weiss has return flight back to wherever SLC Bees are playing tomorrow.

Double headers allow you to add an extra player without utilizing options. This was a COVID change that stuck with the league. Weiss will be returned to AAA after today.

Both Giolito and Lopez are essentially in Roster purgatory right now. Even though both are on the 40 man neither are on the active roster yet. Gio will be added tomorrow while Lopez will be added before game 2 today. I suspect Reyes will be optioned after game 1 and Silseth will be optioned before tomorrows game.

If the game is a blow out in either direction look to Reyes to get playing time in game 1.

I think DFAing Walsh was the correct move. He’s going to turn 30 at the end of the month.

The Thoracic Outlet Syndrome zapped his power plus then you have the neurological issues. Tough way to end his Angels career but we did get 55 home runs from a 39th round pick.

He’s being handled the same as Fletch. He’s due 900k through the end of the season, so he’ll clear waivers. He has to accept the outright to keep the money. He’ll stay with Salt Lake, but won’t be on the 40 man roster.

Last time I checked, Lorenzen did not graduate from Hanamaki East high school. Let’s make two days in a row for 2 graduates of Hanamaki to win MLB game as starter.

More Angels news:

Lucas Giolito is in Toronto and will pitch tomorrow.

Lopez will be here in Detroit today.

Jared Walsh has been DFA’d.

Zack Weiss is here as the 27th man.

Ben Joyce is on the 60-day IL. That’s more a matter of the calendar, he can come back mid-August in theory.

But We’re so lucky to still have Tucky

I assume Reyes & Silseth will be sent down then ? Lopez & Lucas will need to be added onto the 26 man roster unless he is the 27th man for only one of the double header games.

Maybe Tucky has other special talents we don’t know about? Maybe he’s an artist. Maybe he does those paintings with a straw, where he blows the paint around into pretty shapes…..very colorful.

Why is his he bulletproof and untouchable? He’s holding a roster spot for no apparent reason.

I’m not sure I would DFA him with several worse players on the 40 man, but either way, and the drafting of that 1B with the first pick, it’s clear they’re moving on.

I agree with you. It is like what happened with Sho, who waited for a few months and pitched to find out the UCL was not quite healed, and underwent Tommy John. Hate to see it, but Joyce and the Angels are probably considering possibility of Tommy John, which appears to be unavoidable anyway.

I’m not in love with Giolito, but I don’t mind trading Quero and Bush to get him. Let’s hope there’s another established starter in our future to fill it out the rotation, even if it costs us someone like Canning and/or Ward/Renfroe. I do appreciate we’re making a run for it.

Claret

Reply to  MarineLayer

Yeah, Giolito doesn’t seem to be the pitcher he was between 2019-2021. He definitely makes the starting rotation better, but his fielding independent stats aren’t great, so I am not convinced that he has suffered this year from bad luck or from having a poor defense playing behind him. And besides, the Angels defense has been sloppy this year too. Maybe the change of scenery and going to a team that has a chance to make the post-season will motivate him.

Unless Ohtani also re-signs, that doesn’t really help. The Angels have Detmers/Sandoval/Canning/Anderson. They need an ace, which Giolito is not.

If Ohtani is that ace, then Giolito fits into a 6-man rotation. If Ohtani isn’t, then the Angels would need to find a way to move Anderson.

MarineLayer

That was my assumption. Giolito is no ace.

AnAngelsFan

Reply to  Claret

Comparing Giolito’s current 2023 stats to Angel’s main rotation (Ohtani/Detmers/Sandoval/Anderson/Canning), he would be:

IP – 1st
ERA – 2nd
FIP – 4th
xFIP – 3rd
K/9 – 3rd
BB/9 – 2nd
HR/9 – 5th
WAR – 4th

Looks like a mid-rotation piece that might go a bit deeper in games (if the Angels let him).

MarineLayer

Good analysis. I agree. He feels like a 3 or 4 to me. We need someone like Snell to round out the rotation which is easier said than done. Scherzer or Verlander would also be nice if Mets are selling.

Although humid, the weather forecast indicates the temperature will remain in mid 70s until 2 pm EDT, which should help Sho, who hopefully would last 7 innings today. For the second game, Sandoval will have to replenish H2O and electrolytes as necessary.

As crazy as it sounds, Padres are not ready yet to be sellers. I got this sneaky feeling that they are going to go with ‘back to the wall’ mentality against Rangers series. I will for obvious reason cheer Padres this weekend. If they win the series, this weekend, they will not sell Snell, Soto, or Hader. I take my dad to baseball game every Fathers Day. If the Angels are in town we obviously go there. IF they are out of town we go to either Sand Diego or over to Phoenix (I refuse to pay to go to the latrine).

This last Fathers Day we went to San Diego. I had purchased a new vehicle that finally had GPS (previous vehicle was a 2005 model year). Using the GPS to get to the parking structure closest for my 78 year-old dad took us East of Petco Park, somewhere I had not been. Holy smokes, the amount of homeless along the freeway off-ramp and streets was insane, troubling, and depressing all at the same time.

I really want to see the Angles win a World Series with Ohtani. Ohtani and his agent probably wouldn’t go for this extension and trade though because then they are capping him at 600. Maybe a team will pay more than 600 doing free agency.

Of course there are other blockers like Padres agreeing to it, but I think it is Ohtani signing an extension is the bigger blocker.

We need one more vet arm to give us a chance to make a sustained run. I’ve seen Giolito project out as a #40 or so ranked starter, just to give some context. I’m happy we acquired him, but I’m not sure he’s even a legit #2 and Matt Wise certainly won’t fix him.

“After yesterday’s deals, here’s the Angels pitching depth chart…

SP: Ohtani, Giolito, Detmers, Sandoval, Canning, Anderson (Silseth, Barria, Suarez)

RP: Estévez, Moore, Lopez, Loup, Soriano, Webb, Barria, Reyes, Davidson (one of these guys will go today).

As for position players:

Drury should be back next week (if not sooner). Trout within 2 weeks. O’Hoppe within 3-4. They join Ohtani, Moustakas, Neto, Ward, Moniak, Renfroe, Rengifo, Escobar, Thaiss, etc.”

With the addition of Giolito and Lopez (designated as ‘minor’ now lol), I counted the number of players on MLB.com Angel’s 40 man list yesterday night and this morning. Excluding 60 day IL, there are 42 members, which means 2 of them need to come off eventually. Most likely, though don’t have to be, they would come from pitchers.

It is probably safe to assume that Giolito pitching on last Sunday eliminates his participation today, and today being double header, they can add one ‘minor’ player today to active roster. Technically, one can come off today, and another tomorrow, right, Cowboy26?

Kiyotchan

My bet is Gerardo Reyes is moved back to SLC today, assuming he still has option left, and Tucky tomorrow. I don’t think Tucky has options, so he will be DFA’d tomorrow and will have to clear waivers (good chance of that especially during this busy time of trade Tsunami IMHO) to be back at SLC. Will wait and see for corresponding moves for the next 24 to 36 hours.

Good chance we will see Lopez if he can get to Detroit from Chicago by the second game of DH.

Cowboy26
Legend

Reply to  Kiyotchan

According to RR Reyes has one option left so he can easily be sent back to AAA but that doesn’t solve the log jam on the 40 man.

If Tucky is an odd men out ( great book by the way) then he could be removed from the 40 man and 26 man roster by being DFA’d .

Other candidates for being removed from the 40 man roster are Jimmy Herget, Zach Weiss and possibly Reyes, Kolton Ingram and Andrew Wantz .

Lastly, depending upon Ohtani’s nail, could the Angels go all 5 man rotation to complete the season? Thereby giving Mr. Anderson a permanent seat in the Pen? The Angels hav a series of 6 game on 1 day off cycles in August and September which would force Ohtani to pitch every seven days unless he changes his rest pattern. The other thing they could do is pitch others like Lucas on a 4 day rest pattern ( like he’s used to) thereby minimizing the need for a 6th starter . This will get interesting.

Fletcher listed 17 pitchers (he counted Barria twice and Suarez is still on the 60-day IL, which means he is technically not on the 40-man roster). So two pitchers will have to be sent down by tomorrow. Barria, Loup, Webb, and Davidson are out of options. I expect Reyes and Silseth will be optioned. The Angels could DFA Davidson, which would free up a spot on the 40-man roster. Davidson cannot refuse his assigment.

I think I’m ok with this trade for the mere fact that Quero was blocked by O’Hoppe. We traded from a surplus which is what you’re supposed to do. Bush has upside but also some injury history.

It would have been great to have made this trade 3 weeks ago but better late than never.

Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani have given their everything to this franchise — 4 MVPs between them (should be 7) and countless memories.

The correct decision was made to go “all in”. Finally.

Our 2nd best player this season, Mickey Moniak, was acquired for 2 months of a broken Thor.
Prospects come and go, while most of them flame out. We will be fine without future superstars (or future grocery store baggers) Edgar Quero and Ky Bush.

Actual superstars Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, the undisputed best players in game since 2010, deserve this. WE as Angels fan DESERVE THIS.

Lets rock and roll baby

That’s a discussion for the doldrums of the offseason. Enjoy the moment.

it’s ok to discuss now – i think we were already last PRIOR to the trade so hard to go any lower. Maybe we’ll hit 89th out of 30 in the off season.

I really like the trade, but let’s pray that Giolito doesn’t go all Anderson on us.

Love trading the prospects but Giolito is not a dominant arm that I was hoping to see acquired

market shifted unfortunately. We had to overpay to make it happen due to shifting conditions.

Now that Ohtani is offically off the market, I expect the flood gates to open.

Angels being undecided on Ohtani was certainly slowing down the action.

I admire Perry’s hutzpah. On the same day he keeps Ohtani, he immediately gets the best pitcher available. I was worried that with all the Ohtani waiting, Perry would miss out on everything else – whether it’s buying or selling.

But he strikes first, and it’s a big shot across the board.

I wonder if the Ohtani “announcement” (it was a leak), though, accidentally raised the cost for any pitchers in trades.

I also wonder if dangling the possibility of an Ohtani trade was a ruse to slow down other trades until the Angels could figure out which way to go

I agree with you there, I’m impressed by Perry in this regard.

All that crap with Ohtani could have made us dilly-dally around so we missed out on everyone else, and ended up “standing pat” at the deadline which would have been really silly. Good job Perry for at least acting once he chose his direction.

If we make Baldoquin available, What do you think we can get in return?

A number 1 SP
A Slick fielding, power hitting 1B/3B
Dipshit may even give us Julio for him

(Of course we would have to re-sign Baldo first)

Add in Maitan and we could get TWO #1 SP’s
