Frankly, I feel bad for Travis. He has not even been getting starts in spots were the backup would traditionally get one, for example a getaway day game after two night games when the regular guy started the first two…
My thought was that as a former catcher Kurt is trying to show confidence in Logan and support him emotionally by showing that trust.
But in my mind you could still do that without sending the backup to Siberia !
I mean, of course Travis will struggle when he finally does get a start cause he’ll have no rhythm. And then people will stupidly say “Travis sucks.”
That’s fair. I would like to see Nolan given the chance to hit himself out of the slump tho. As the season goes on, I’ll be pretty bummed if sits against the majority lefty starters.

Hard to say he is cooked when he barely has gotten a chance to see the field.. He did not play a single inning in Cincinnati and we had a blowout on Saturday in addition to Friday night in which he could have at the very least gotten an AB or two…
He usually catches Kikuchi but he didn’t in the recent meltdown. I wondered then if O’Hoppe was screwing Kikuchi up somehow.
Nolan is actually hitting better against lefties so far this season, although in only 10 PA, so I’m scratching my head too. If the idea is to get Frazier’s bat in the lineup, it would make more sense to set Perazza down who’s hitting a 100 point less than Nolan against lefties.

Good article Jeff. I am glad you are calling out the mess with the pen, and how the loss at Cincy was managed by Suzuki. I have been shouting from the rooftops for over a week now that Kurt does not know how to manage a bullpen… I especially liked this insight :
The radio guys were politely wondering if Suzuki would leave Pomeranz in for the 9th, since the Yankees had a bunch of lefties coming up and Pomeranz only threw 12 pitches. They also mentioned that Romano hadn’t pitched for a week and that the rust was showing.

If Trout is playing well & healthy in July and the Angels are out of contention, is there ANY chance that he’s traded to a contender?
Depends on how much of Trout’s nearly $150 million in salary beyond this season Arte would eat. He’s not a 28-year-old in the midst of an MVP season so I doubt other teams would take on a commitment like that.
Obviously the club would have to absorb a significant portion of the amount due. That goes without saying.
My question is could this be the year – and last realistic window – in which a trade could occur?
Personally, I want to see Trout have an opportunity to win a World Series and that’s obviously not happening in Anaheim.
Thing is, I don’t think he has any interest in going anywhere else. I don’t think playing in or winning a WS for another team is something he cares about.

Unless Mike can finish up his career like say Dave Winfield, I don’t think another team would value him enough to pay $12-15 million a year to be a DH. He means more to this team than he would to any other and I think the Angels would rather market him closing in on 500 homeruns than someone else.
Him’s would look good in blue, and it would keep him in Socal, and he’d go to a few WS. 😎
The Angels won’t ever get anything of value other than some salary relief. I’d rather have Trout be our version of Ernie Banks (career with same team and no WS) than see him play for another team.

Mike ONLY gets traded if Mike WANTS to be traded. That is the first hurdle, not how much money another team is willing to take on. The money thing is secondary at best.

Josh Lowe has been horrid on both sides of the ball. A decent night last night not withstanding.
Negative WAR, 16 K’s in 15 games, bad defense. I’m ready to move Rada into center, Trout to left, and Lowe to the bench or AAA.
Rada’s largely picked up where he left off at Salt Lake. More or less the same player. The front office is probably waiting to see more oomph from the bat, but they may be waiting on that for quite a while. He is who he is.
I’m of the same mind I was in the offseason – absent free agent replacements, Rada should be leading off, playing in CF with Trout in LF right now. Trout’s still passable in center, but no longer a defensive star. They’d have their best defensive alignment if MNT could just sublimate the ego, and embrace his age mid-30s self.
Just move everyone down a notch, and have Rada-Neto-Trout-Adell up top.

Question for the assembled experts- does it make sense to do a massive dump and rebuild this year knowing that next year is (very likely) a lost cause at the Major League level? I’m totally in favor of blowing this team up for mass quantities of prospects. MiLB will still be running, won’t it?
I’m not claiming to be any expert in the baseball “industry” for starters… but yes, I’m 100% on board for doing a massive rebuild of trading away every player who can give us some value, who isn’t signed beyond 2028 (with some possible wiggle room on that date).
There are those who say they want to hang on to a few of our players because they are good. But the shape of our franchise is so bad that we’re not going to turn everything around in 2 or 3 years. We’ll end up having some really good players (say Neto, Soriano, Adell) on a 77 win team for the next few seasons. And then those guys leave, or they sign expensive contracts so that Arte is unwilling to sign anyone else. We have way too many holes in the next 2 years. That is exactly the strategy we’ve done for 11 years. Just take “Trout/Ohtani/etc.” and replace that with “Neto/Soriano/Adell etc.” and you get the same exact thing happening again. A few good players providing “Entertaining Baseball” at Angels Stadium. It’s Arte’s playbook. It doesn’t work.
We need our farm system and development pipeline at a point where in addition to having guys like Neto/Soriano/Adell etc, we also can field above-replacement-level guys at 3B, Outfield, 2B, Bullpen, etc. We aren’t right now. And it is apparent that Arte isn’t going to open his wallet like the Dodgers and sign high-priced FA’s to fill all our holes.
I’m not interested in watching 2 or 3 more seasons of Neto, Soriano, Adell etc. play “entertaining” Angels baseball and see the team win 77 games, and then all those guys walk, or we sign 1 or 2 of them to a huge extension, and then we’re locked into repeating the past decade.
I would rather see us cash out on all of those guys, and flood our farm with solid prospects, so that in 3 years we might have a wave of a solid team, that is so cheap that then hopefully Arte would be able to splurge for like 1 or 2 players to made a solid team into a contender.

That’s kind of the problem. We’re stuck in no man’s land with no apparent way out.

I know it’s crude and unfair to say but Dirty Jordan can go suck a monkey. What a frustrating waste. Dude doesn’t have it.
Let’s be patient. He had a terrible game last night for sure, but prior to that he hadn’t given up a hit yet all season (thanks in part to Adell’s hero night). Still averaging 12.6 K/9, so his stuff doesn’t indicate that it’s batting practice for the other team.
Time will tell if his stats the last couple of years were truly part of recovery from injury or if he has really lost it.
He’s been ass for years now.
He’s been ass for 2 years and in one of those years only made 14 appearances before being shut down due to injury/surgery.
Last year was his first season back post-surgery.
I am not predicting that he will go back to a sub-3 ERA closer necessarily but there is a possibility he just needed a year to fully recover and is much better than what we’ve seen the last couple of seasons.

What stuff are you referring to? Are you saying he doesn’t pass the eye test or are you referring to advance pitch tracking metrics?

It would not scare me if I were an MLB hitter.
I have no idea, I’ve never stood in a batter’s box against anything higher than little league pitching.
My eyeball for pitching is terrible so I don’t try to use it. I see guys like Kenley Jansen that are super effective and I don’t see anything with my eyes that looks difficult to hit. And then guys like Zeferjahn where I feel like I see a lot of movement and velocity and he’s constantly getting knocked around.
I see the same things you do, Trojan. Three strong years in a late leverage and finisher role, followed by two injury-riddled seasons, rehab and inconsistency.
But he had a very strong spring, and six effective outings before a bad night last night.
I’ll admit he stunk last night, but Romano had been pitching well up till then. The 3 hits, 3 runs, 1 HR and 1WP he has on the season were all last night and he’d converted 4 out of 4 save opportunities. If he comes back and pitches well, he’s still the closer. If not, I’m not sure who the team goes with next.
He was dancing through the raindrops the first couple of games. This outing was begging to happen, and God forbid we have a 1 run lead going to the 9th tonight I expect Suzuki goes right back to him and we have a repeat of the first game..
If by “dancing” we mean he hadn’t surrendered a single hit in his first six appearances with the club, and had only allowed two baserunners in the same span, while possessing the highest K rate in the pen.
I remember a whole lot of “dancing” from guys like K-Rod, Fuentes and even Percival. A lot traffic on the bases – and that’s something we actually haven’t seen a whole lot of with Dirty Jordan to date.
I’m surprised how much shit Romano is getting for the lone outing in which he’s stumbled thus far. He had a great spring, with a 0.83 WHIP, and carried that into the first three weeks of the season, bringing a 0.40 WHIP into the ninth inning last night.
I don’t see anything weird about Suzuki going to the most reliable arm in the pen up to that point last night. Or even going back to him again later this week.
I would hope that you of all people TT would not put stock in Spring Training numbers or performance…. If Romano is as good as you suggest then how come no MLB team besides the Angels bit or would take a chance on him ?.. For us it is clear : Arte is cheap. And, in the end you get what you pay for.
I will be very surprised if we see a return to the 2023 guy who put up a 2.90 ERA.
I’m looking at a continuity of visible performance plus underlying velo, pitch movement and statcast metrics. Why wouldn’t I look at what he did in spring training when the very question with Romano is whether he is getting over two years of myriad injuries and rediscovering the success he maintained for several seasons? It’s not like the front office was just looking at box scores when they floated him to the closer role – the underlying metrics look a lot better than ’24-25.
He’s been inducing a lot of weak contact, minimizing barrels and his whiff % is in line with his best years in Toronto. His velo is healthy – he’s sitting 95-96 and touching 98.
Everyone seems to want to make this a story about ownership and what the market will pay for injured players. In Romano’s case, I find the individual story much more compelling, and there’s still a lot in the profile to like. One bad outing in the last two months doesn’t change that picture for me.
(And to say it again: Romano had been inactive for a week. Leverage relievers often need regular action.)

For starters, batters have a pull percentage of 54% which to me is not a great sign …
Further, you are incorrect on the fastball velocity. According to Fangraphs his fastball avg velo is only 94.6 mph, which especially for a closer is not scaring hitters and is not impressive.

Ben Clemens of Fangraphs literally wrote an article one year ago with the title “Why Doesn’t Pitcher Pull Rate Seem To Matter?”.
Pull % is tremendously noisy for pitchers, and is only an issue if it correlates with frequent high contact, and low chase/whiff, high barrel rates.
Romano’s statcast profile shows the opposite – soft contact, elite whiff, above average barrel suppression.
Lets make a new REAL stat: eye-rolls per comment (ERPC). Frosty’s ERPC % is at a staggering 2.3% to start the season, by far the highest percentage of his career. Its early though, and he could very well start saying some non-cringy stuff eventually, so let’s not judge him yet based on a small sample size.

But speaking of small sample sizes, inclusive of last night’s outing, exactly 11 pitches have been put into play when Romano’s pitched – six were pulled, five were center or oppo.
If we’re going coin ERPC, I think we need some vertical and horizontal break metrics to measure how far those eye rolls pivot into the back of the head – because there’s some skull-snapping break on using pull % with single digit BIP samples!
I’ll confess I didn’t see Romano melt down last night – I was cooking dinner for the fam, and listening to A’s/Rangers, peeking at Gameday here and there. But I saw the first FSF Romano landed sat at 95.7, followed by his next at 94.8.
The last AB I saw him pitch was vs Atlanta (see attached), his last appearance before NY.
I think the more obvious question to ask about Jordan Romano in the closer role is: what happens when he sits for seven days and doesn’t pitch? Last night might suggest unpredictable results…
ERPC is a relatively new stat, I expect the advanced analytics to add more context as it becomes more engrained in the blogosphere.
I wore my Halos hat to go see a movie last night, stopping to get a bite and beer beforehand. Sat down to see Trout’s go-ahead HR, which had me feeling pretty good in my hat. As we were leaving for the movie I saw they were down 10-8 and there was a yankee on 3B with no outs. At least the movie was good (Proj Hail Mary).
Caught that one over the weekend. Could’ve shaved the final forty minutes off, I thought, and they missed an opportunity to play the B-52s Rock Lobster over the end credits, but it was a good time for a while there.
Pull %? LOL. Tell me with one stat that you’re lost in the forest, and it would be that.
None of the stats posted are inaccurate. You’re just randomly pointing to other irrelevant stats. Given Romano’s just more than a year out from elbow surgery, sitting 95 seems healthy to me.
We’ve had these statistical debates before, Frosty – like when you were trying to educate me on predictive data modeling – and they’re always a waste of time. Stats aren’t your thing – I get it. You can’t gaslight me into thinking they are. My professional career was as a stats guy at Google for two decades, where I often made 7-figures for the privilege. You can’t fake it, dude. I don’t think I’m the only one here noticing when you try. 🙂

He was averaging 95.6 just three games ago, and after one outing he’s at 94.6 – that’s what happens in very small data sets. When your average is floating around 95 by decimals, that’s literally sitting at 95.
Romano touched 98 three times in late spring – I even mentioned it at the time, because it was anticipatory of recovery to his Toronto velo.
That’s not goalpost-moving. It’s describing actual data points in a very small, noisy set.
Adding an extra mph + on the velo to support your argument. I get it.
That is not the way statistics work and you know it…. We don’t get to go back one or two games to select a preferable statistic. If that were the case we could just throw out the blown save last night..

I like those numbers, but when I see BA and OBP so close together it bothers me. I think it means he’s got skills and is on a hot streak but the overall affect is minimal because of difficulty discerning pitches. When pitchers adjust, I’d expect him to have a hard time reacting and thus a prolonged slump.

Jo also has a BABIP of .364 so far this year after being .257 and .244 the last couple of years.
He also is on pace for a career high in chase rate and a career low in barrel %. 🙈

I am not overly concerned with barrel% to be honest. Adell’s power is the one thing we can probably count on. His hard hit % was closer to career average I think, but I am too GA to open the page again. So I was cherry picking a little bit.
I am a little concerned at his chase rate though. I almost wonder if the lack of extra base hits so far this year has him pressing a little bit. And since he’s managed to slap through a lot of singles with that high BABIP, it hasn’t bit him in the ass yet.

I need a cleanser from Angels baseball, it’s just so damn frustrating. We’ve already tried Urena, Klassen, Johnson, Farris, and now Aldegheri. It’s a freaking joke.
At least Dana is finally healthy and back in AAA — he was always the answer to be our #6 this season. Speaking of #5, is GRod actually gonna make an appearance any time soon?
Urena was not really given a fair shot. We could bring him back and insert him in 6th inning games that are within 2 runs and go from there. His stuff seems to be decent; just needs some help and coaching on the mental side, which I think MM could do.. Urena is by no means a lost cause. I think Johnson also has potential, just needs to get healthy.
Romano however IS a LOST CAUSE ! How many more blown saves and games will we suffer before Perry lets him go ?
Urena nor RJ are MLB ready, and that’s ok. Rushing them to the majors because Perry is a toddler is not.
Romano also has blown 1 save. For as bad as yesterday was, he’s still one of our better relief options

Totally true he has only one blown save, but it is not like he’s had alot of chances. If you look purely at his STUFF, it is crap. No life or velo to speak of on his fastball and the breaking stuff is not great either… He is a disaster waiting to happen. He lacks both an “out” pitch, and secondary stuff. He is probably the worst current closer of any team…
Quite frankly, he was lucky prior to last night, and last night I think we saw the REAL Jordan Romano. He did not even come close to getting an out and I mean, just look at the last two seasons :
2025 : 8.23 ERA ; 1.453 WHIP (-1.73 WAR)
2024 : 6.59 ERA ; 1.463 WHIP (-.3 WAR)
What about these numbers makes you think he is even remotely qualified to be closing major league games at this time? I mean, both Bachman and Silseth are infinitely better options ! And to be honest, even the two young kids Urena and Johnson would be better ! Why are so many of you blind to how ridiculous this is ?
His K/9 this year is 12.6. OK small sample size, but last year in the worst season of his career it was 9.9. Saying he doesn’t have an out pitch seems like a stretch.
Keep in mind that in 2024 only made 14 appearances, playing through injury, until he was shut down for the year and got elbow surgery. 2025 was his first year back from surgery. Every season before that he was dominant.
Will he bounce back now that he is more than a year removed from surgery? Who knows, maybe he will end up being terrible. But it’s not improbable that he could vastly outperform the last two seasons at a minimum. I am not ready to form an opinion one way or another until we’ve seen more than 6 games.
Even if you choose to disregard the numbers he fails the “eyeball test” in my book. I pray it will not take 4-5 blown saves for Perry to swallow his pride and dump the guy…

All the pitching stats in SLC are brutal. Aldegheri’s are among the worst, though.
Maybe it is just us … It’s funny that he did not look bad in his WBC appearances with the Italian National Team.

Trout was the Yankees’ “The one that should have been ours”, just like that Japanese guy was the Dodgers’ “should have been ours from the start”. So to see Mike play at an elite level vs the Yanks is always great to watch.

Hotdogs have been at least $8 at Anaheim Stadium for the last two years. What I want to know is where can I find a beer under $5?
It used to only be Budweiser in the 500s behind home plate that served $5 beer (12 oz). Now you can find canned 12oz at a few different spots, 200s behind home plate 1st base side past the team store (corner market… I think 100s right at 1st base too). Hot dogs suck and are overpriced at the big A. I find it atrocious that parking went up from $10 to $25 in 2 years. That and the attendants suck/aren’t helpful… if you drive a Lexus you’re supposed to get Lexus parking now you have to enter in a certain entrance. Karl Strauss gives you the parking money to spend inside. So better food than in the stadium with parking included!

Very entertaining game. Trout doing Trout things was the most enjoyable aspect of it all.
Watching the cowpen unravel it all culminating with a game ending wild pitch was the most “buttercup” moment of the season thus far.
The team can hit. The team has one great SP and a collection of #5 SP’s behind him. The team defense is a liability. The cowpen is an unmitigated disaster. This feels like a typical Perry constructed team.
AL West is wide open and Perry assembled a JV-level bullpen.

You’d be absolutely insane to trade Soriano. If there is one thing we can be sure of it is that The Little Sinker Boy HAS to be extended. That is the number one priority. Next, we need Joyce back ASAP to grab the Closer role. Then Silseth and Backman and Pomeranz can take the 7th and 8th innings as a trio. Romano needs to be DFA’d like yesterday !
The things you are talking about are not unfixable Pineapple. We DO have potential solutions in the pen, AND in the rotation. If Grayson could get healthy and be decent it would help, and as previously stated I think Johnson and/or Urena could be bullpen, starter or Opener possibilities…

Re: Soriano — I’ve called for an extension for 2 years. It’s clearly not happening. I was very wrong about holding onto Ohtani, I’m not going to wrong on this one too. We can pillage a top farm system for Soriano, well doubtful Perry can lol

Even if they were willing to do it I would half to think long and hard about the individual cases…. First, I would want proven MLB talent to start. Then those top two dudes as well.
No. You don’t trade a guy like Soriano. That’s it. A non-starter. IF Arte refuses to pay him and he walks, or they trade him for unproven scraps I am gone. Arte will have lost me as a fan. ANY team in Major League Baseball would make it Priority Number 1 to secure Soriano (possible exceptions in Pittsburg and Sacramento).

We haven’t had a bonafide “Ace” in years. We have one now. Letting him go would be foolish. They do need to pay the man however and they should angle to get that done sooner rather than later – lockout or no lockout in 2027.

Given everything (ownership, baseball operations, farm system, player personnel, beer quality, parking lot attendants, HVAC equipment, etc.), no one should be off-limits for trade. However, I’m not sure there’s one team with the depth of prospects to acquire Soriano. It might require two, possibly three teams to deliver us the talent required to let go of a 27-year-old top of the rotation starter who’s not eligible for free agency until 2029.
I’m still going to another 6-8 games this year having already gone to a few. I bet I’m different here, but if the angels competently traded any/all players of value (including trout, Neto, Soriano) I’d be okay with it. Eyeing 2028. Maybe some picks, some top 5 farm talent (with a good health history and younger in years). I’d still go to all the games, but then I could be excited about the development of the next home grown Edmonds, Erstad, Salmon, Anderson etc. The keyword there is competent. Angels run on a skeleton crew of nobody’s… marketing just wash rinse repeats past promos with 3 personnel, scouting is a mess, on and on. So I guess I’ll just enjoy the nice thing or two while we have it.
