LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Getting Close

I left the office on Wednesday and there was still a smattering of light outside. Just enough to make me realize the days are growing a tad bit longer meaning baseball is getting ever so closer. Watching the sun drenched Australian Open always makes me pine for the day games of the Cactus League and start counting the days.

Wednesday February 12th is report day with Monday the 17th the first full squad workout. So, 7 days left in January plus 11 to go in February and we are almost there.

What’s even better is that sandwiched between those two dates is a day of love and celebration across the land. Yes, NCAA baseball kicks off on Friday, February 14th. Long Beach State plays a home game that evening. So do the Titans of Fullerton. The UC Irvine Anteaters play at noon on MLB.com. Those are each team’s full year schedules so take a look and catch some games.

Spending Valentine’s Day at the ballpark would be pretty cool. And if I wanted to go out couples or not, that’s one place to avoid all the cliches and jacked up menu prices you’ll find everywhere else.

One guy who looks ready for the season is Luis Rengifo. This is his walk year so expect big things.

Rengifo is young enough to be an extension candidate but also valuable enough to be a nice trade chip. We’ll see in July which direction the Angels and Rengifo take.

Luis is not the only piece of the roster set to turn over. Looking at the rebuild, the Angels have 11 players currently making $105 million annually who are set to depart over the next two seasons.

The key to opening an new contention window is replacing those expensive players with better, younger, less expensive players. This will allow the team to target a handful of top notch free agents rather than fill a dozen holes. Which position players are on tap to replace the departing players?

Really, I could write more about this. Take a look at FanGraphs list of the Angels top prospects and their estimated arrival dates. 11 of the top 12 have estimated arrival dates of 2025 to 2027 and Perry has two drafts and two trade deadlines to add more talent before the Angels see that $105 million in salaries drop.

One might wonder why guys like Chris Cortez might arrive as early as this year. Take a look at this:

Relievers don’t get high draft grades but they do get big money nowadays. I’d love to see a homegrown back end of Cortez and Joyce for a while.

In looking for video of Cortez I ran across this gem. Apparently Cortez and Angels first rounder Christian Moore had a run in last season.

If you haven’t watched much SEC baseball, I recommend it. I started watching more college ball during the last MLB lockout and really enjoy it. The game play is solid but the fan support is incredible. They do college sports right down south.

I’d love to link some current Angels news but I only have one thing: Tim Anderson, come on down.

I’d like to personally extend Tim an invitation to come to my gym and learn the basic techniques of striking. I train under a former world champion and will gladly do as many drills as needed to make sure this disgrace of a fighting stance and outcome never happens again.

(That link is a highlight reel of my coach and good friend “Razor” Rob McCullough and is definitely worth a watch; particularly the KO about a minute and 45 seconds in. Warning, it contains violence ha ha.)

Tim Anderson joins Scott Kingery as formerly high profile players fighting for a job in Tempe. The Athletic did a nice piece on Scott this week. If you don’t have a subscription it basically boils down to this: Kingery uses Aaron Judge’s personal swing coach and the Phillies wanted him to prioritize contact over power. The two sides couldn’t agree and he felt he simply wouldn’t get a fair shot in Philly.

From around baseball:

The Dodgers signed all the relievers because of course they did.

Welcome to Atlanta, Jurickson Profar.

Toronto signed Anthony Santander, saving the Angels the 46th overall pick. But holy deferrals, Batman! Toronto took a page from the LA Tax Dodgers and deferred $62 million of that $93 million contract. That’s basically what Ohtani defers each year, to illustrate how ludicrous that contract is.

Speaking of Ohtani, his Pete Rose of a translator tried to convince a bank they were speaking to Ohtani when he needed a cool 200 grand. A more detailed recap of the story points out Ippei will be sentenced for stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani on February 6th. I’m assuming he gets to defer his restitution payments until after his prison stint.

Mariano Rivera and his wife are being accused of covering up sexual assault at the church they founded. I don’t want to link this but have a feeling it will pop up in the comments. Let’s please respect the fact there might be a victim here and leave it at that.

And to top it off, Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner were elected into the Hall of Fame. One doofus didn’t have Ichiro on his ballot and he’d like to have a drink with said doofus.

Let’s wrap this up by remembering just how great Ichiro was. I’m glad I got to see him up close several times. He never disappointed.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I may or may not be blessed with a new nephew this weekend. Being an uncle is the second best thing to being a dad and this will be #21 on the niece and nephew count. That doesn’t include any friends kids who call my Uncle, those are our siblings kids.

Well, 4yrs/$100M for Alonzo? Yep, pull that string Arte. $25M, will not paralyze the team for years to come, and he will probably be better than Pujols was in that fourth year.

I just see Trout finally getting some protection in the batting order with Alonzo.

I think if Arte wanted him, a deal would already be done.

Whatever happens next, it’s likely Perry’s choice.

Perry didn’t draft his franchise 1st baseman with the 11th pick in the 2023 draft and rush him to the majors to replace him with an expensive Pete Alonso less than 2 years later lol.

I don’t dislike Perry, I just don’t believe he’s anything more than just an average GM, nor do I believe Perry’s hands are clean when something stupid occurs with the roster.

We can discuss it without arguing 😀

It’s so happening.

Especially with Bregman’s imminent return to Houston. All that is left is to avoid Alonso, which obviously means Arte won’t.

Well if this move is an Arte inevitable. career wise there are a couple of silverlinings:

Alonzo’s OPS is virtually identical whether he faces LHP’s ( .233/.342/.515 or RHP’s (.255/.338/.514) And granted these are smaller sample sizes he has fared extremely well career wise at the Big A as well as against all of our division opponents and their ballparks with the exception Safeco field he cant but a hit in that place but killed the M’s at Citi Field where, again career wise, he has hit better on the road than at home.

I wouldn’t mind Alonzo for three years, but, he ain’t gonna sign for just 156 weeks. He anchors 1B for a year or two, finishes as a DH. Alonzo wants a retirement contract (5 or more years) and I just don’t see Arte doing that.

With all this talk of Bregman returning and Altuve moving to left, had to share this. (For the record, I’m a huge Altuve fan. When he beat out a routine ground ball infield single against us in a late inning in a 0-0, and ended scoring the winning run – I had to respect him. I knew he was fast, but it was so impressive it stuck with me. Love watching him hit too.)

Has anyone heard anything reliable about further upgrades to the Halos roster this season other than the dumpster diving of the last couple weeks? I have seen references to “an unknown team out West” supposedly being in on certain guys and other veiled mentions of a possibility but nothing anyone could confirm. Thoughts?

That’s the normal modus operandi of The Angels, and this year I’m fine with it. See what we have, jettison a few players at the trade deadline, draft well, look to 2027, 2028 to get above .500 and maybe a playoff spot.

Oh good. President Kasden of the Doyer Blue has come out to tell the world that what the Doyers are doing is GREAT for baseball. Kind of like when tobacco companies told me that the toasted flavor of their smokes will give me pep and moxy and healthy vitality. I am happy now.

I wish just one owner would come out and just admit “Hey there MLBPA. Like it or not, there is a certain level of profit none of the owners wants to dip under. You may wish we would do so to overpay you for shit you already did, but you can suck it. Sure, there’s the Doykees and Mets. That’s 75 roster spots total, many of which are also held by cheap controlled players. It doesn’t matter what your union rep or agent tells you. None of the owners want to pay you what you’re asking for because you are not worth it. And no, everyone doing the same simple math is not collusion. So feel free to take the contracts we are offering and suffer with just millions and millions of dollars or go sell supplements to high school kids. Thank you.”

Free agency is for suckers at this point. Build the farm. Pay your own boys. Go central division teams. All hail the pitch clock. Set a floor. Set a cap. Now that there’s an internet the two baby brigades can have their strike, I’ll watch college ball or go do something else. Fk the Doyers and Ohtani too. Dave Roberts is a pussy. Fk advertisements on batting helmets. Someone buy the naming rights for my ass. Bring back steroids. Jeter has herpes. #jeterstrong. Fk overly red uniforms, build back with the dark blue. Please sign no one I care about and let the needle sleep. Amen.

Hey, we used to have a GM here who believed in HS athleticism until he got fired and was replaced by his successor who did a equally bad 20 pitcher almost all reliever draft. That’s OK however since he got sh*t canned and failed up and is now with the Mets who seemed to replace the Red Sox as part of THE MLB BIG 3

Nice Ichiro video compilation in today’s Weekend Crash. Huge Suzuki fan and loved watching him play. May not get love now in today’s launch angle society but the baseball skills are undeniable. First year with Seattle, earned the MVP, ROY, GG and SS awards. Insane. All-time hits leader in one season, 262, hard to see that being broken with today’s load management. 10 straight years of 200-hits, durable, speed with a Winchester arm.
Lived in Japan when Ichiro and Hideki “Godzilla” Matsui were dominating their divisions. Great to watch them on the field from both sides of the Pacifc.

Highly recommend attending a game or two. Great atmosphere and some great eats. I was able to attend seven different stadiums. At my workplace, Japanese Execs had Chiba Lotte Marines club box they would flip us tickets. The Marines were the closet team to The Mouse where we all worked. From my apartment, 15-min bicycle ride to Yakult Swallows and a little farther up, the Tokyo Dome where the Yomiyuri Giants and Nippn Ham Fighters played.. Yokohama Bay Stars were in striking distance as well and on the outskirts, Seibu Lions. These were all within Tokyo proper. Would love to be an expat again.

Once inside, go to the men’s toilet and look behind and underneath the seat area. You’ll find a red envelope. Wipe the urine and diarrhea specks off the envelop. Our offer will be contained within. THE DODGERS FARM SYSTEM IS IN FACT OVERRATED!!!
Yes even pundit experts can be wrong, right? Didn’t the Mariners have a top rated farm system in 2010? Dustin Ackley…remember him? Name a guy from the Dodgers since Julio Urias who has been all that good, Alex Verdugo, he’s no better than Brandon Marsh. What about our own guys from 20 yrs ago {Brandon Wood, Casey Kotchman 👎 💩 } James Outman, was sent down in 2024 after being Todd Hollandworth 2.0. GRADY FUSON FOREVER!!!!! BYE 💪 💪 💪 💪

Walker Buehler was before the Pandemic as was Will Smith and Cody Bellinger. They haven’t developed anybody who’s all that good in 4 or 5 yrs. Go to Baseball Ref or even Wikipedia to find that out and yes it was in fact Julio“Mr DV”Urias.
So it’s a good thing we didn’t trade Ohtani to them for James Outman…..LOL!!!! So what that means is we could’ve at least done something, BUT WE ALL KNOW WHO SHOT IT ALL DOWN!!!!
You gotta be willing to take on big money contracts for a bag of Dorito’s.

Not sure what you’re saying above. You originally said the Dodgers haven’t developed anybody since Julio Urias. Urias was an Intenational signee who signed at age 16 in 2013 and he had his major league debut in 2016. Bellinger signed out of high school also in 2013 and debuted in the major leagues in 2017. Buehler was drafted out of college in 2015 and debuted in 2017. Smith was drafted out of college in 2016 and debuted in 2019. What does the pandemic have to do with who was developed after Julio Urias? If your original point was they haven’t developed anyone since the pandemic, you should have said so from the start.
And are you saying that getting nothing for Ohtani is better than getting a young, cost controlled player who has shown to still need development rather like Adell? So, nothing is better than something? Okay, got it.

Sorry about that 2002, I misread your second paragraph. You were saying that the team should have traded Ohtani for something, but the line about taking on contracts for Doritos threw me.

I’m also assuming that you meant because Urias wasn’t able to pitch a complete season until after the pandemic, that he wasn’t developed before the others who debuted after he did in 2016, never minding that he was a part of the Dodgers’ playoff teams for 2016, 2018 and 2019.

Rex – it’s not rejecting Alonso as a player – it’s that he is a waste of money at this point. His 2.5 to 3.5 WAR production would barely move the needle for this team. Maybe it puts the team at 70ish wins. Why make a huge investment for that limited upside?

Alonso would be a player to sign for a team on the cusp of competing for a playoff spot. That is not the Angels…..yet.

Embrace the suck and the rebuild. It’s easier that way.

Serious question- why? What difference does it make? To me it’s totally irrelevant particularly during a rebuild. Arguably it’s better for a rebuild to win 63 than 70. Wouldn’t the Angels be better off with higher draft picks in the 2nd round and after that than winning 70 and probably picking 10th in those rounds?

It’s less about the extra 2nd rounder, which yall overvalue all the time.

It’s that we don’t need another big longterm contract on the books. Especially when that contract would be a one dimensional, slow-footed 1B/DH.

Tim Anderson, Anthony Rendon, and Jesse Winker would’ve been a heck of a trio!!! Would’ve been West Side Story and Bronx Tale every weekend at the Big A….. 😂 💪

As always, great article.

Trade Rengifo
Free Ippei

Ippei won’t have to pay back a cent because he was the fall guy for Shohei. The truth will come out one day.

“Who am I speaking with”is a security pass code for an account worth millions? Isn’t there a PIN number or other personal passcode only the owner would know that is needed? BS cover-up.

They had a security code that was texted to the phone number on file, which just so happened to be a phone Ippei was holding.

When I need to redirect millions of my money to the Kill the dolphins, No trees standing and Plastic 4ever orgs, I just do it over the phone.

You mean a PIN that Ippei setup posing as Ohtani or in Ohtani’s presence?

They set up the bank account together.

Read the indictment

Looks like Rengifo is working with the right guy. That guy needs to work with Schanuel, he knows what he’s talking about.

sheeesh, JJ — extra great content this morning!

Dreaming of Cortez sticking in the rotation, but a Cortez-Joyce tandem is absolutely diabolical lol.

We have an abundance of fun arms in the pipeline!

I like the idea, with some of the arms we have, so much that I am trying not to get TOO attached to it so I get all pissed off if they don’t do it. Like PTP made me some sort of personal promise they’d try it and then he screwed me.

But he’s GOT TO be aware of the mountain that paying/developing 4 starters will be. He’s also likely not blind as to what some teams are doing with multi-inning arms. So hopefully PTP/Wash/Damnright get in on the magic.

That’s ugly baseball. I’m waiting for the one owner who starts the shift away from 5-inning starters back to the traditional long innings pitcher who goes deep into games, complete games were king. Arm injuries as so prevalent these days.

It’s not that crazy, ugly or new. My beloved 1975 Reds had a “starting staff” but had 5 relievers with between 90-125 innings pitched. My Beloved Pirates in 1979 had two real starters the way you see it and four guys with 130-160 innings. The 1980 Phillies. Three relievers with more innings than their bottom2 starters. The 1990 Reds. The 1965 and 69 Twins. The 68 Tigers. Lot’s of cool teams from back in the day that really only used two “legit” long inning starters.

It’s an interesting concept.

Check this out —

Soriano is a workhorse who gets quick outs. Silent C is a workhorse who gets quick outs. Dana has shown to be a workhorse in the minors who consistently goes deep into games.

I have all 3 penciled into full-time starting roles by 2026. Then we still have Kikuchi and Detmers to round out the 5-man.

Silseth, Bachman, Klassen, Cortez, Ryan Johnson are all arms in the farm that can serve as those effective 2-3 inning eaters (and that’s only if they don’t pan out as starters).

I love our pitching depth.

Yep. I’m sure some of those young arms will purge out, but they will be replaced with new arms. A guy like Detmers…. if he knew he only has to see the order one time, maybe 1.5? I bet he can burn through 4 effective innings pretty often.
