LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Swept ‘Em

The Angels completed the sweep of the Seattle Mariners yesterday. Was it good for you?

Two Angels appear in this list of top 25 rentals on the trade market and three others got honorable mentions. Three other Angels made it onto this list of the top 25 non-rental players on the trade market.

MLB and the players union amended the collective bargaining agreement to allow for revenue sharing to benefit the teams who lose revenue on their media rights deals.

Nick Ahmed got a major league deal with the Dodgers.

The Mets placed right-hander Christian Scott on the IL with a UCL sprain. Seattle will lose both J.P. Crawford and Julio Rodriguez to extended stays on the injured list. Christian Yelich may have season ending back surgery.

The Red Sox are set to sign a three year extension with their manager, Alex Cora. Are you sure cheaters never prosper? The Red Sox, by the way, had a heated consultation with the Rockies over a fly out. I don’t know if anybody got ejected or suspended.

Wilson Contreras accidentally chucked Lance Lynn’s 2,000th strikeout ball into the stands. They got it back in exchange for a bat.

Mariners get Arozarena (7.3 value) for prospects Aiden Smith OF and Brody Hopkins P (7.7 value) plus a PTBNL. So position players are indeed a little premium thus far….

These were there #12 and #22 prospects.

Mmm. Marlins got a fair return for AJ Puk

Puk had a value of 8.2 on the sim and those prospects were a 10.5 combined. So the market’s starting to set.

Giants cut Nick Ahmed, who had 1 homer; Doyers immediately pick him up. Ahmed homers over the CF wall in the 8th today to break a 4-4 tie and basically ended the Giants’s hopes. 13 games back now.

It’s kinda funny/ironic. Ahmed, who wrote “Genesis 9:16” (on his hat?) for Giants Pride Day; this quote is used by Christian groups to “take back” the meaning of “rainbow” favored by the Gay Pride movement…and the winning pitcher of today’s game and beneficiary of Ahmed’s homer was…Blake Treinen.

Rough day for a lot of Giants fans.

Does Doc Rivers of NBA fame decide? Is that credential league issued? Bestowed by the media? Did the Doyers have a prestigious ceremony like the Brit’s do to knight someone? The Angels have not traded anyone yet, just like the rest of the MLB, because the return for our trade assets gets higher the longer we wait.

I thought we all knew that. But nope, reads like we don’t around here.

My thoughts are that Perry is assembling a roster that is full of consistent replacement level position players 0-2 WAR. , a few borderline All/Stars ;3-4 WAR) . But nobody we draft or in the minors is going to be a superstar , so that has to be in free agency. The question is will anyone actually sign here when the roster is at that level? That is most likely in ,December ‘26. They do need another Neto – O’Hoppe prospect and another Soriano – Dana pitcher.

I think it is quite possible that the pain is simply a residual to the surgery and not necessarily a sign that there are still structural issues or new structural issues with the knee. I don’t necessarily think this means that Trout is done for the year.

I’m curious. For the hard rebuilders, particularly like Gitch, Jeff, Grandpa, and others, does next year look like this position player wise?
C – Logan
1B – Nolan
2B – Moore
3B – (Assuming you trade Heefo) Rendon or ?
SS – Neto
Lf – (Assuming Ward is traded) Moniak
CF – Trout
RF – Adell
DH – ?

You’ll need a 3B and a couple of OFs to cover for the Rendon and Trout injuries and replace Ward. Is Jordyn Adams one of those? I know a lot of people want Trout to DH but that’s not likely. If he’s able to play, he’ll be in CF.

It’s possible you get a 3B or OF back in trade who can play next year but probably not until 2026 if they’re AA players.

I’m not suggesting anything and I support any reasonable path. You’re hoping that Nolan and Moore workout and maybe Jo as well, but if some or all of them don’t, that’s a lot of positions to fill. In 26 and 27 you’ll need a 3B and maybe a whole new OF if Trout DHs by then.

Is that kind of the plan? Pretty much stick with what we have and reevaluate after next year? I am not judging or criticizing this approach, just asking if this is what you’re thinking. Have to see how the draft goes this year and next and how the trades turnout.

IMHO:

When it comes to Estevez & Ward, I say take what is offered, but only after weighing options. Heefo or Anderson would only be traded if the haul was very favorable to the Halos.

Estevez is pitching well so I think the Angels can expect a better offer for him. Just hope whomever they get works out better than what they got for Iglesias. Though to be fair, Davidson was a highly regarded prospect.

Hard rebuilder here.

I would fill any gaps created by a sell off with veterans on 1 year bounceback/prove-it contracts. Think Cody Bellinger on his 1 year deal with the Cubs. Even though it didn’t work out, our 1 year deal with Thor was the right idea for a definitive rebuilding team as it presents a possibility for buying low and selling high.

Also less expensive veterans in the rotation or bullpen that may become tradeable like Pillar.

The rationale/logic is that if we’re going to suck either way, who cares if these deals dont work out? If they DO, its a boon to the rebuild by giving us more trade chips.

My desire would be that they pursue a plan and stick with it. If for some reason you’re more successful than anticipated, don’t let it mess with your plan. So for this year, regardless of how close you are, trade current assets for future assets assuming you get reasonable value in return

Yes, going from “Building through the farm” to sign high-priced FAs, to win now to….whatever the Hell we have now, has to get to the point that the Halos stick with one plan, like you said.

My thinking is “get pile prospects yah good” so we can stop complaining about not having any prospects. The only position where we are strong enough to not need prospects is catcher and SS…. and you know what? There’s nothing wrong with having more high end prospects at those spots either. So just get “best prospects available” for every player we trade.

Then sign some FAs that won’t block those kids. A pile of JD Davis, Brian Anderson, Eugenio Suarez, Eddie Rosario, Victor Robles, Chris Flexen, Brad Keller, John Means type roster and pitching filler. Best case, some guys who may be good enough to be trade bait.

So, yeah. Close to what you were thinking…

C – Logan
1B – Nolan/Eugenio Suarez
2B – Tony Kemp (Moore in MiLB)
3B – Rendon/Eugenio Suarez (Sign corpse like Joey Wendle when needed)
SS – Neto/ Kyle Farmer
Lf – Adam Duvall
CF – Mike Trout/Moniak
RF – Jo Adell
DH – Eugenio Suarez/Mike Trout

Withy a big pile of prospects at AA who can be given a look basically at will.

So yeah. Crap, but crap with a better farm. Trade off what can be traded again this next season as well. Sandoval for example.

BUT. If we know at this point that we have 4 or 5 core position players set (withy some prospects on the way) and a half dozen pitchers solidly in place (Like Joyce/Crouse/Soriano) THEN in the 2025-26 off season we spend on FAs and trade prospects for MLB players.

As a red shirt sophomore, Prager always had some leverage, as he has two more years of eligibility at Texas A&M. That Perry didn’t prioritize his case before doling out 1.25m to Dylan Jordan is just poor planning, poor communication and bonus pool mismanagement.

Well, I gotta say all the talk about gaining ground should take into consideration we don’t have one, but two, teams in front of us in our division. Perry just needs to take calls on Estevez and Anderson that can make us better starting next year. Trout looks to be done for 2024 and we cannot sell the farm (Literally) again so soon. Flush 2024 and build for 2025/2026.

If the Oriole’s come sniffing around, I gotta a plan (Pay attention Perry). First of all, ask for a soon-ready MiLB pitcher and OFer. DO NOT mention Holliday. The Orioles are giving up on Holliday and another highly favored OFer will be, (or already has) passing over him on the depth charts. If Perry is stupid and mentions Holliday by name, it wouldn’t work. I see Holliday as a player that needs more marinating at AAA and to be mentored by a coach, such as Wash, to develop.

Yeah, I know, I am dreaming….. 😕

If we somehow get to within 6 by the 30th, hold Ward, Rengifo, Anderson and trade them during the offseason if we decide. Maybe trade Estevez, he should get us a nice return, and replace him within. Yeah, I’m sure its out there somewhere but when I look at the offensive team and especially pitching team stats it seems our W-L record is better than it should be based on on field performance. Lol, which means hold the course and sell/rebuild.

The W-L record is better because of Washington’s +15 war bonus. I figure the team has 4 already, so 11 more to go.

Plus the 9 wins we are still due to receive for no longer having to suffer through Soths turrible ingaym decisions as measured by fat fks on couches. I’m still waiting for those wins too. We get those, we’re in the play offs for sure.

Maybe they will arrive with the incredible transformative powers that NewNicorn Owner brings?

We swept them in 3 game home series in late June. Lost 5-6 in Oakland. Season series 4-5 A’ss. Home team rules, we’re at home.

3 of 4! F the A’ss as much as the M’s!

It would seriously be the 2nd most awful thing (next “gotta keep Ohtani”) for our future to make the playoffs this year. My gah, the weakest playoff team ever? No need to address that. All the buzz and hype causes us to not rebuild for another 2 years, as though we can really go toe to toe with Houston, much less Baltimore and Cleveland.

I do not disagree, but I’m also not going to root against wins

The biggest mystery is why is Anderson still a Halo? I truly thought that he would go up the 5 frwy by now, or at least to some contender and who doesn’t need pitching? Has PTP been instructed to hold off? Don’t trade with the Dodgers? Does Arte think this team can make the Playoffs and then win a game or two? Or is it that no other team wants to do business with Arte’s Angels?

Like the sands in the hourglass the days are running lower in all areas to improve this team. Is Perry on thin ice or scared stiff to make the wrong play? Is Carpino whispering in Arte’s ear to Hold on to what you got? Does the Mystery Wagon need to be called in to find out what is happening? Stay tuned Halo Hacks for the next chapter in “Why are they still here?”

Why should we help the Dodgers by giving them an All-Star pitcher (our best pitcher btw) for some unproven 20 year old stiff ? Why ?

Do you work for the MSM Grandpa? Sounds like it.

Are you a closet Dodgers fan who would like to fleece the Angels ?

Sooooo….. who is it OK to trade Anderson to and who should we be getting in return that’s not a stiff?

I’d only trade Anderson if the haul was very beneficial, like two or three highly respected prospects.

Of course, I would’ve traded former employee #17 last year before the deadline too, knowing Arte wasn’t going to go near the insane amount we all knew he would get.

Why? the goal of this whole thing is not to have an improved farm.
