Angels Sweep Mariners

Canning vs Castillo. A frustrating pitcher vs an old vet. Who can pitch the best against offenses that are offensive in a park formerly known as Safeco? Canning went 5 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 6 and walking 3. Not bad, but Castillo threw 6 shutout innings. Yeesh. The Angels really cannot score off of him. At least the Mariners bullpen is iffy, but the team would have to come back late again to win this one.

That’ll do Canning, that’ll do…

And they were able to. It wasn’t the flashiest of victories, but the Angels were able to score just enough to win their 4th in a row, and a sweep vs the Mariners. It is so satisfying, watching Seattle crumble before our eyes.

Highlighted Recap

The Mariners scored first in the 2nd, uh oh.

1-0 Mariners

The Mariners were threatening again in the 4th but, as usual, they Mariners-ed it. A NOBLETIGER! (No-Outs Bases-Loaded-Ending (with) Team-Incapable (of) Getting-Easy-Run.)

The score stayed 1-0 for a long time, as the pitching was much better than the hitting today. That is, until the 8th, when Willie Calhoun came through!

TIED game!

Then Drury came through with a hit of his own! (and got thrown out)

2-1 Angels

Suddenly, the Angels had the lead with only needing 6 outs to win! And they did it! Angels win! A Sweep!

How Sweep it is!

Upcoming

The Angels face the A’s for 4 at home this time. The last 4 games against the Oakland A’s, FOR-EV-ER. Seriously, we are in July. Who made this schedule?!

Well this is what really pisses me off. You cant afford to screw up and not sign your early round draft picks because you thought you had an agreement with him. If it was a gamble draft him in later rounds like Alford. Then when this kid plays you your are only out a late draft pick but Arte and Perry got played. Aand there’s NFW with the state of our farm system we can miss out on signing these picks even if they may get a comp pick next year for losing out on the guy.

Perry should be fired for this alone.

Very sad for MNT. Left his rehab in inning 2 with knee soreness. Is it possible the dude is done? I can’t imagine him playing much CF at a minimum.

This is why I want Moniak to thrive, and not ditch him. Right now, he looks to be the only viable CF for the next few years. If his hitting can be at least acceptable, he can play a decent, even above-average CF.

It’s time to have a conversation with MNT about moving to the corners. If he still puts his ego above his team and his own health, it’s time to explore parting ways.

How do we feel about Enright at this point in the season?

The bullpen has been mostly stellar now for a month or more. Guys like Estevez and Joyce have made some phenomenal corrections under his guidance.

Anderson and Soriano have really found their form. Some of the reclamation projects have been awesome too such as Fulmer, Crouse, and Strickland.

Surely he deserves some credit for this season. Detmers and Moore are really the only guys that don’t seem to have improved this year.

Detmers tonight, 5IP, 3 runs, 1 earned, will get the win

And gave up 2 more Home runs tonight so thats 5 in the last 2 starts and 13 (!) since hes been banished to the Great Salt Lake.

I’m just not seeing any improvement

I think there’s way more positives than negatives.

Moore – Probably a case of waking up old.

Detmers – Hard to explain. Trading him now when his stock has bottomed out would be a mistake IMO. Then again, perhaps he isn’t good.

^^^^^^^^^ This.

If I might, noticeably better than the last guy. Actually hear about adjustments being made. He can’t fix everyone, probably not a guru, but the number of guys improving / stabilizing is a positive. It’s as we might in the future be league average or normal with some consistency. But, still lots of work to be done.

Yup. We can’t always hit 5-run homers. We need to settle for incremental improvements, hopefully along multiple fronts. If that happens, we could “arrive” by 2026.

No “black pills” re: the Angels.

Obviously we need some guys to emerge from the recent draft, do nothing big FA wise in 25’ unless of course we take on a bloated contract with a fading veteran in exchange for additional prospects.

It generally takes 4-6 weeks with this type of injury. If Mike takes 8 months then he should reevaluate continuing

Seems likely obvious that he’ll shut it down for the season, again. Man, it sucks to see him fade away in a heap of injuries.

Besieged with issues at work, never thought about the day game until driving home. Watching replay now.

Great job, Halos. Swept the Mariners. Wish I could have saw it live to witness Ol Butterface weep. Suck it, Jerry.

Time to trade some prospects and draft picks for veteran players in order to have a shot at the playoffs.

Except Rengifo, of course. Trade him.

The team is on pace to win 70 or so games, and yet is not out of the picture to win the division. A lot would have to break right for the Angels, but since the AL West sucks this year it’s not just a hopium addict’s delusion.

8 GB for the division
11 GB for WC #3

Man, this team. Or maybe more appropriately, this crap division.

What could have been? Had Trout and Rendon not been injured for a significant time? Would the Angels be 3, 4 GB on the division instead?

No/limited production from Trout, Rendone, Drury, Detmers, Sandy, Silseth … and obviously no Sho.

We should be so much worse than we actually are.

Trout and Drury were the biggest disappointments for me. Trout for the injury and Drury for complete lack of production.

No suarez and they would be a 1st place team. The angels were 2 – 13 in games he pitched in.

Twebur

How’d we win two games when Suarez pitched? It was a miracle.

Too GA to look it up. But, he did have a lot of innings as the mop up guru in blow out losses. Him being on the roster as long as he was is an indictment of baseball malfeasance.

Jerry’s definitely got numbnuts this year. Mariners have a great young pitching core, yet he cant fill out a roster with at least a few decent hitters? The hardest part is building a staff of quality arms, bats are easily found in FA pool or trades. I wish we had their starters.

“Sources say the Angels’ recent upswing has cooled Arte Moreno on the idea of allowing GM Perry Minasian to trade pieces, with teams pivoting to other options due to the team’s indecisive direction.”

I made this up. It’s what I’m worried is happening behind closed doors. It’s been fun beating the Mariners, but hopefully the wins don’t hurt us. It’s pathetic that this is even a possibility.

yeah – i’m kidding – WC#3 is clearly out of grabs.

It’s the AL West Title i’m hunting – its the easier path.

Just looking at rest of year, but mainly 2025, the A’s and M’s aren’t going anywhere, and Houston is trendning downward. Rangers could go either way.

Don’t see a reason to punt 2025 away.

Watching all the dudes and all the spring trainings, i’ve identified only a few a-holes who were buttheads to fans.

the worst was Scotty. didn’t like him when he was here because the condescending way he acted toward any fan around.

Jerry was always cool, so the only contempt i have for him is he’s a quitter. my dad always told me “Winners don’t quit. and quitters don’t win.” He was friendlier than Perry. But he will never win.

any other franchise would have canned the manager by now. my guess is he’s gone very soon.

hope they let him keep his uniform.

Having heard Jerry interviewed multiple times in the past at some season ticket holder events, I dont think hes that great of a communicator. (Unlike Billy Eppler) He appeared to me to be mostly a brainiac whose management style is more of a loner than a consensus builder. Not sure how strong the relationship with Servais is but they’ve worked with each other for a longtime and I suspect its going to get tested real soon since someone’s going to have to take the fall in Seattle for this emerald turd.
