LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Deadline

Both Luis Rengifo and Carlos Estevez made it onto this list of the top trade deadline candidates at every position. Mark Feinsand seems to think Carlos Estevez is more likely to get dealt, but that teams might just make an offer Perry Minasian can’t refuse for Rengifo. Is that what the Red Sox are contemplating? Mike Trout could be back with the big club as soon as Thursday. The Angels just designated Adam Cimber for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster for Jose Quijada who is back from the 60 day IL.

On Sunday, Bob Melvin got himself ejected before the Giants game even started.

The Braves had to call up Nacho Alvarez Jr. due to Ozzie Albies breaking his wrist over the weekend. They designated Forrest Wall for assignment to make room for Alvarez. In other Braves news, they signed Whit Merrifield to a major league contract.

The Mariners placed Ty France on outright waivers. If he clears waivers, he has enough service time to refuse his assignment and become a free agent. Infielder Edwin Rios elected free agency rather than accept an assignment to the Reds Triple-A affiliate.

The Dodgers will DFA James Paxton. The Mets designated Cole Sulser for assignment.

Luis Rengifo is the most entertaining player we have. Even when he does something good he finds a way to do something silly.

“Detmers has struggled tremendously for Salt Lake, pitching to a 7.11 ERA and 6.04 FIP in seven starts (38 IP). Most concerningly, he has given 11 home runs to his minor league opponents. His stats look better if you ignore his two worst outings, but even then, his 4.94 ERA and 4.11 FIP at Triple-A are worrisome numbers for a pitcher who is supposed to be an above-average major leaguer.”

Who is on the market next year besides Soto. As much as everyone here has plans they would like to see executed, I have a very difficult time believing Arte is willing to go through another year like this next year and is highly likely to pursue an expensive FA like Soto even though he has to live with 2 more years of Rendon’s contract. We may not need much position player wise even though we could use starting pitching and Perry is developing a homegrown bullpen.

I doubt Arte is losing sleep and the park is drawing 30,000+ fans. On average, better that 2022 thus far.

The truly sad part is that he doesn’t need to do anything well on the operational side of things. He bought this team for $183 Million in 2003 and the current Forbes valuation is $2.7 Billion which is 1430.5% increase.

He has “made” an additional $500,000,000.00 in valuation since he said no two years ago.

BTW: As I typed this, I got a little sick to my stomach in realizing that this piece of crap owner isn’t likely to go away anytime soon.

Good point. I think that there must be an expectation that there is a workable path to monetization with live sports as the valuations aren’t seeming to be dropping.

The multiple platform stuff with the ability to match offers was pretty brilliant by the NFL. Baseball has a tougher path but it is still one of the few places left where people continue to view commercials.

He has a TV deal that runs through 2032 and to the best of my knowledge that entity ( which I believe Arte has ownership in) did not file bankruptcy despite all of the other Sinclair implosions.

So at this point I’m not sure this is a concern.

An expensive FA isn’t coming here right now. Not while we are “reloading”. And no, we can’t just pay a guy a little more and he’ll forget all about about being on a good team. Sure, we can overpay for some veteran bloat, but a “major free agent” isn’t happening even if Arte wants it.

I say sign no one.

Which is honestly the smart thing to do. Sign some pitchers and relievers on 1-2 year deals and hope to flip them at the deadline for more prospects.

Maybe take on a bad contract in exchange for prospects.

Invest the cash savings at the MLB level into good coaching and video to try to make the youngsters and prospects better.

Likely 2027 at least before the team is able to compete. With that in mind, you attempt to trade position player wise everyone you can except for maybe Neto, O’Hoppe, Schanuel, Adell, and Trout. No reason to trade Thaiss or Moniak as they are cheap and replacement level. Continue to trade and draft and evaluate where you’re at following 2026.

It isn’t an inspiring list.

In fact, the dreadful list of infielders should really increase Rengifo’s value at the trade deadline.

And one could argue Ward as the second best left fielder if he was available. So that could add to his value as well.

Compare/contrast fun…

Take a look at KC’s draft relative to ours… a much more conventional, slot-driven group of players and signings, all the down the line through the 10th round.

https://www.mlb.com/draft/tracker/2024/all/team/royals

No college senior penny savers. But also no optimization of later picks. That being said… did we really gain that much by over-drafting, say, Cortez in the second round? $500K in slot savings is nice… helped us get Dylan Jordan… but alternately we could have had a player like David Shields, the Royals second rounder, with a much higher ceiling, for not much more $.

One takeaway: Perry and co. are definitely creative with the draft, in terms of working the angles, than a lot of orgs.

Or it might also convince the M’s that they need to go all in at the trade deadline and help add to the demand for the Angels trade pieces.

As I have posted before, none of this fixation on trading makes any sense unless Perry can acquire real prospects in a trade not just make a deal for the sake of making trades. That would be a bigger shame.

Totally agree Cowboy. I feel like alot of folks here (including Fan) just want to make any kind of trade, even if it is a bad one for us. As you put it “a trade for trade sake.” That is the wrong kind of thinking. You have to actually do things that benefit the team whether long term or short term. Sometimes that involves holding onto your good young players (Rengifo for example).

I assume that the 1st round pick takes over 2B quickly RenDone isn’t going anywhere, so the IF is full. And so is the OF with Trout returning. Rengifo at the peak of his value for top prospects, especially SP. Given our timeline, a trade makes sense if someone is willing to overpay.

JackFrost

Reply to  MarineLayer

Rengifo can play not only 2B, but 3B and the OF (albeit not well). You never know what will happen with prospects. Who knows, maybe Moore is moved for a SP. You just can’t say with certainty.

What we DO know is that Luis Rengifo is a very good Major League hitter (they don’t grow on trees) and is still relatively young. He should have a good 5-6 years of MLB service left. No way you trade him for 2-3 unprovens. IF you do trade him you have to get at least a solid # 2 starter and perhaps a secondary piece. My bias would be to extend him. We will deal with the Moore situation when the time comes… BTW Rendon will be gone sooner than later (I think it is likely) SO that opens 3B up for heefo.

His appeal to other teams as well as his value to the Angels is based on his positional flexibility. All you want in life is your own unfair advantage so trade him if you can get value.

JackFrost

No, don’t agree. You don’t just trade him for “value.” Right now he is our best hitter (though not currently active). AND he is a switch-hitter in addition to the positional flexibility you mentioned.

I say you only trade him if you will clearly WIN the trade. And preferably that win includes a proven frontline starter. If you can’t get that and clearly win the trade (not just get value) then it makes more sense to extend him.

Hes never been in this position before.

As a buyer he was not very good. In the “let’s make a trade of surplus assets” he excelled in the O’Hoppe dea but thats one tradel. I believe the only other trades he made were salary dumps so its hard to measure those.

Since I dont think dumping salary this is a concern this year, it really will be a defining moment if he can extract any thing of value for any of the one year rentals or those that are in demand have 2-3 years of control left.

Ironically this franchise typically does operate this way. At least they haven’t over the last 25 years. The last trade ( and only significant one I could find over that period) of one of our valued assets is trading machete for Patrick Sandoval 5 years ago.

Very true, they have never been sellers. The only two ways for the team to improve is via the draft or trades, so they will have to do those things to get better. They don’t really have anything position player wise in the minors that is going to help anytime soon so it’s new acquisitions that are needed. I also agree that they should put most everyone on the block and see what they can get. If they don’t receive offers they like, they don’t have to trade. You are also correct when you say this is new for the organization.

Also by adding Free agents. This might be unpopular, but if it was up to me, if I did not get an offer for Rengifo that I liked, I would extend him for an additional 3 years. I believe he would be a very cost effective solution at 3B and you could still trade him at anytime in the future if you choose.

But what is “full value?” Do we laser focus on a named player of a top 5 team best prospect list and bang the table or make a move involving rising prospects that have yet to evolve? Sandoval was #19 and while it no longer looks like a steal, it’s the type of trade that is worth making.

This team needs to replenish the farm. I’d be more focused on that than trying to win the AL West in 2025.

I think THE ABSOLUTE KEY to everything is that there are unknown factors that allow me to explain how stupid PTP is and how evil Arte is so I feel better about myself.

Is there a way to be sure the prospects we trade for will be any good? No. Is that true on most teams? Who cares? Is there any way to be sure a free agent we sign will not bust? No. Is that true on most teams? Who cares? Injuries? Do all the other team’s GMs know if they will happen? Don’t know. All I know is PTP better.

The world offers so many ways to shitsip. CtPG Guy embraces em all.

I’m still curious to know what kinds of trade offers they received for Ohtani. I wonder if that was totally shut down due to Arte’s stupid insistence on keeping him or if names were actually named.

The Nationals made a huge prospect haul on Soto and are now emerging into relevance. That haul could have been had by the Angels.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  PedroCerrano

It didn’t sound like any trade offers got to the names stage with Ohtani because Stoopid Arte, along with 95% of CtPG Guys at the time, believed that you DON’T ever trade the unicorn plus all you have to do is throw a lot of money at Ohtani and he’ll stay right?

Right?

So probably no names. Though, trust me, I did the trade sim stuff for it a bunch at last years deadline and it was about 1/4 the value we would have gotten in 2022.

And even in 2022 people would have been pissed at what we got because it would have been a list of names that have not “proven” themselves. Even in 2022 it was a pile of Miller/Pages/Pepoit plus a few younger names lower down their list. Like 6 good/solid prospects.

Unless the team is going all in to get to 70 wins, I don’t think that will be a concern. I don’t know how close the Angels are to the luxury tax, but that would be the only impetus to “must” trade players. For once, Perry isn’t under the gun to make things happen. The team has assets other teams can use and he can make trades with a look towards the future rather than the here and now. If he can get another O’Hoppe then do it, otherwise stand pat and let the core continue to develop.

They want to continually throw at and hit our best hitter. That just increases our focus and determination to kick their asses. I really don’t like these guys.

Mariners Derangements Syndrome…MDS
I approve this derangement! One of my most enjoyable teams to hate!

LOL – didn’t we knock out via HBP their leadoff batter and gold glove caliber shortstop yesterday in the first inning?

And how can we ever forget this fight where Wantz was ORDERED to bean the batter “I HAD TO DO IT.”

Try this again on the right day

Ankle Bitters @ Bees tonight.

Silseth versus Edwards Jr.

Trout should be in the lineup.

We are a few days away from fielding an actual lineup again 🥹🥹🥹

2B 👑 Luis
CF Trout
DH Ward
C O’Hoppe
1B Schanuel
SS Neto
3B Rendone
LF Moniak
RF Adell

Agree that the lineup will be vastly improved, however, I don’t see Wash putting O’Hoppe in the cleanup spot — at least for now. He has done a good job of keeping the young guys in lower stress spots in the lineup (with the exception of Schanuel who has pretty much always been in the 2 hole). My guess is that he’ll have Logan batting 5th or even 6th, which I kind of like as those are two pretty pivotal and important spots as well …

Against a right-handed starter we could see something like this :

Rengifo
Schanuel
Trout
Ward
O’Hoppe
Rendone
Moniak
Neto
Adell

Rendon not leading off anymore? Really?

This practical question brought to you by…..the same people who have kept Ward in the 3 spot all year.

I agree, RenDone belongs in the top spot because he has bat control, no power, and makes the pitcher work.

No on Moniak! Disgusting display last night. Moaning and begging for a HBP call is not a good look. He’s serviceable defensively but a complete offensive black hole. And I don’t care that someone years ago decided he was worthy of a high draft pick. They were obviously wrong!

The other options are Calhoun or Drury

Maybe I missed it if it was posted already but Passan’s article saying teams have been expressing interest in Detmers is interesting.

because Reid is good. Giving up on him now would be disastrous.

It just depends on whether a team is willing to overpay. Minasian was willing to overpay last year at the deadline to the benefit of the White Sox. Too bad Minasian running another team with needs.

They think they can buy low on him.

We should NOT sell low. Either sell very high or fix him. We’ve got time on our side.

Reid hasn’t been good his 4 years as a starter, he’s been average to below average. Do I think he’s young enough to turn it around? Of course.

They are probably thinking they can rob us blind by getting him cheap while he’s going through a rough patch. I think he will turn it around. He has shown the ability to be a solid MLB starter if not an ace.

This could be really bad. He will “find” himself again with an AL foe.

Change in environment and a few tweaks would help Reid out. Set a good price tag on him and listen.

Isn’t the problem that our biggest need is starting pitching? Especially young starting pitching with upside?

So, who trades for Reid and gives us what we need (someone who looks kind of like Reid)?

I left the Adell Fan Club for a couple weeks, but I’m back in.

After 2+ months of futility it surely looks like he’s has finally made some necessary adjustments. He works so hard with a great attitude, you want to see him find success and establish himself as a part of this young core.

.199 / .270 / .399
15 HRs
46 RBIs
13 SB (65% success rate)

Keep grinding, Jo!

There’s still 2 1/2 more months this year. I believe next year will be a lot like this year so you can see what he does then as well.

I would definitely pursue trading Ward though this year or next because of his age and the fact that he’ll be gone in 2 years.

Just get that OPS above .700 and win a gold glove Jo. Then you’ll have my all important approval.
