LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Hated Jerseys

People seem to have hated the All Star Jerseys. Gee! If people hate them do you think we should do something about that?

At least they introduced Tyler Anderson at the All Star Game. I’m glad they didn’t make him run around smoothing down the infield dirt with the grounds crew. In other Angels news, they have signed a bunch of undrafted free agents.

On Sunday, they formally induct four more guys into the Hall of Fame including “Never An Angel” Adrian Beltre. Players are now getting threats over gambling. Rob Manfred says that “is a matter of concern.” No spit Sherlock! Whose idea was this gambling thing anyway?

The Mets claimed Alex Young and designated Tyler Jay. Dallas Keuchel is now a free agent. Any takers?

The White Sox have designated former Angel Martin Maldonado for assignment. Meanwhile, they also designated Danny Mendick for assignment.

Former big league pitcher Jerry Walker passed away at the age of 85. Also recently passing away was former Rockies scouting director and special assistant, Pat Daugherty.

Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reminds the world of the dumpster fire of an owner that is Arturo Moreno:

Anyone wanna guess where some of our guys will get traded to?

– Estevez to Yankees
– Anderson to Dodgers
– Ward to Philly?
– Rengifo I think stays put due to his injury

2025 schedule is out. The schedule guys are still on crack this season.

We have 4 home series vs. 6 road series in March/April.

We play HOU, TEX, SEA, OAK/SAC, LAD on the road before our first in-division home series on June 6.

Went to the All Star Game. The gear sold is crazy. Lines to get in a store that had to have 15-20 registers. So many uniform and hat sales, it blew me away. $179 plus per jersey. I think hats were $48. For All-Star games, it was pretty good. Witt is going to be special. His tools are off the chart. He’s a true 5 tool guy, and there aren’t many.

Collazo reporting that the Angels have signed Cortez, and round 5-10 picks, plus both the prep outfield bats at #15 and 17 (including Manny’s son).

They went well underslot on #2 and #6-10 to give a massive overslot bonus to the prep arm Dylan Jordan – Caden Dana level, around $1.25m.

As many suspected, the Angels found a mutually agreeable number with #11 pick Gregory-Alford. He’s signing and Gatwood’s not.

At this point, I would expect the Angels to sign 18-19 of their picks.

I think they overpaid on Jordan, but they must have really liked what they saw at the Combine, as both Jordan and Gregory-Alford were scouted there. Though G-A made all the noise with the highest velocity by far of all the prep attendees.

Any word on Moores bonus?

Nothing definitive on Moore, Johnson, Prager or Gordon yet.

My guess is that Moore and Gordon are discounted just enough to pay for Gregory-Alford, while Johnson and Prager land near-slot bonuses.

They saved more than 800k with their round 6-10 discounts, so they’ve already paid for Jordan.

It also looks like they saved big bucks with 2nd rounder Cortez (saving $475,300) 6th Round pick Peyton Olejnik ($168,600 savings) and 7th rounder Bridger Holmes ( saving $71,200) you take those numbers coupled with the reported possible $1,000,000 savings on the Christian Moore signing and the 5% overage amount on all the slots ($649,500) that would leave over $2.2 Million to possibly pay the high school pitcher Gregory-Alford (who is already rumored to have signed) as well as Gatwood over the 150K slot value where they both could receive a total signing bonus of $1.25 million each.

Of course this is all based upon the assumptions that the Comp pick, the 3rd rounder and 4th rounder as well as picks in rounds 12, 13 14, 16 & 18 all sign for slot.

I’m not ecstatic, but I’m fine with Moore, two power arms that will try starting and may be in the pen, and 2 HS arms with upside.

On the road for opener again and on the road for the 4th of July, MLB-NY doesn’t like us. I still would prefer to play way more AL teams. We are after all in the American League.

Yes, that June/July travel schedule looks awful.

Cleveland –> Boston –> back home –> all the way back to the East coast –. return home with no rest day –> off to Atlanta –> then north to Toronto –> back home –> take a much-needed all-star break, then dart off to the East again.

Apparently, the league decide to put all the shorter-distance road trips at the start and end of the season.

Or just do the team’s uniform but replace the teams colors with “All Star Team” colors and a patch. So our boring as oatmeal white/red uni’s would be white/gold or silver and black. Or if the game’s in seattle, use emerald green, la la la…. but basically alternate colorways of the same jerseys/hats.

They have to make something to sell, but that shit this year? Dog sweaters.

They are looking for variations that they can sell. I get that. But it doesn’t have to be Safety Orange on Khaki…. Jesus Christ man, did anyone at Nike learn about the color wheel or was this job just given to a DEI hire?

If you want “regional” variation just do the Angels uniforms in Diamondback’s colors when the ASG is in AZ. Or in City of Chicago colors if it’s there. Maybe put a cactus or Sears Tower (I know) on the side of the hat. Baring that, use black/gold/silver/ivory a lot in variants.

But basically the teams uni. It’ll sell fine. Everybody wants a “different” jersey from their team.

Forwarding this to MLB…

Then let the DEI people and everyone else, have the uniform and tell them to go crazy with the color schemes and patches. Customize orders online until you become color blind.

FungoAle

For Football, Hockey and Basketball AS games, the playing surface is intermixed with players from both sides and is more of a contact support. You need similar uniforms to be able to discern who is who but not in baseball.

It appears Connor Gatwood 100% committed to Auburn. What % of drafted players in this exact same position, changed their minds. Obviously it happens, but how often?
Any draft experts here have a historical overview?

There will be a number of late inning relievers on the move before the deadline. Oakland will deplete their stable. The Nationals made out pretty well in the Hunter Harvey deal with the Royals. KC coughed up their second top prospect AND a competitive balance pick in 2025 draft. Estevez is out pitching Hunter and but realize Emilio is a rental. Hunter has one more arb eligible year remaining. Let’s see if Perry can change my thoughts on his ability as a GM.

I’m not expecting too many trades to be honest. I think the team will trade Anderson and/or Estevez and either Ward or Rengifo. Ward’s bat hasn’t been good since May and has cratered this month, but he’d be the choice for an outfielder, and with Moniak hitting well of late, Ward can be replaced in LF when/if Trout returns. Rengifo can hit but his being injured recently may scare some teams off.

Somehow ward has the 3rd spot cemented in the line up. He should be batting 5th with ohoppe 3rd and Calhoun at 4. Can’t wait for trout to return.

The attempted good vibes feeling of the same uni’s was a complete washout imho. This is after all a case of if it’s not broke-don’t fix it. The is a large amount of pride that goes in being a representative of your team and city while wearing team uniforms. Why does it seem that to much razzle-dazzle is forced, not natural, well, at least to me. I can say that I still like the mid-season All-Star Game though, but next year how ’bout red and navy speedos and matching wife beaters and flip flops. The colors were hard to take this year just as much as my suggestion would be hard to take in.

If they want to push their seemingly doomed league differentiation (look for extreme realignment when they go to 32 teams) how about regular team jerseys with AL/NL caps? Yeah, those were some sad unis.

Exactly. The “team/city pride” things is important. It also sells jerseys.
