LA Angels Monday News Crash:

The Angels hired pitcher Jose Cisnero to a one year deal yesterday and designated Livan Soto in the corresponding move. In related news, the Angels ranked pretty high on this list of the teams with the most work left to do this off season.

The White Sox acquired Dominic Fletcher from the Diamondbacks in exchange for righthander Christian Mena.

The Mariners acquired right-hander Gregory Santos from the White Sox in exchange for their 2024 Round B Competitive Balance pick, right-hander Prelander Berroa, and outfielder Zach DeLoach. The Mariners also signed Heath Hembree to a minor league deal. The Cardinals designated right-hander Guillermo Zuniga for assignment to make room for Keynan Middleton. Middleton gets a guaranteed $6 Million. The Twins signed veteran right-hander Jay Jackson to a major league deal pending a physical.

Adrian Beltre will wear a Rangers cap in the Hall of Fame while Jim Leyland will have no logo.

Big league pitcher Al McBean passed away at the age of 85.

So it would seem there are two levels of speculation here.

1. That Arte is about to sell the team.

There is apparently a source within MLB that this is going to happen soon. I would say that if the information actually comes from a source (as is asserted) then I guess there is at least a chance this could happen. So I’d call this somewhat speculative.

2. Mark Cuban is going to buy the Angels.

This seems to me to be blatant speculation.

The fact the ‘rumor’ of an impending sale was spread on MLB Radio, a station owned by MLB, gives it possibly a bit more credibility. Very strange they would allow a story like that without some basis.

“USA Today Predicts J.D. Martinez to Land With Angels”

JD Martinez has been consistently a really good hitter and if one bat is all you needed he would be a great pick up, or if he could play 1B or 3B. But this team needs a lot more than that going forward and you’d like to have the DH spot possibly available for Trout a couple of days a week. After this year they may need 2B, a 3B, maybe an OF, and worst case a 1B, along with a DH. I would rather the team make moves that that potentially improve the team long term while allowing them to evaluate their young players. Either Montgomery or Snell, and Bellinger, for the right price and years could be good long term additions. Assuming you did your due diligence with Bellinger and convinced yourself of his performance level going forward, he would provide a back up for Trout, Schanuel, and a corner OF or DH.

No way I’m signing an 8 year deal to a guy when I have 1 year of money rolling in. Not for huge money, anyway.

I wonder if some of them will take higher AAV, shorter term deals so they can hit free agency again once the TV situation is clearer in two years.

I just checked Maton has no options left, had a horrible offensive year last year and The vaunted Fielding Bible is not so kind to his limited MLB defensive work.

This one is pass for me Jeff.

Even though hes not a LHH, IWT The Angels would be better off, just to promote LeBlanc onto the 40 sometime before his opt out. he’s pretty good hitter but seems to be much better defensively and still has all 3 options left even after hes added to the 40 man. And as an added bonus he’s French Canadian

The Angels lost one of their all time great coaches and instructors. Marcel Lachemann’s older brother Bill passed away over the weekend . He was a long time roving minor league catching instructor in the minor leagues among other roles. He was credited with the development of many Angel catchers including the Molina boys, Naps and Premium just to name a few.

Good for the Royals for locking up their homegrown superstar. And good for Bobby Witt for wanting to build a winner with his first (and last) MLB team, and wanting to be that one-team superstar like Derek Jeter and Dustin Pedroia (and maybe Mike Trout).

Bobby Witt looks like a good young player and he’s had 1 year at that performance level. They are hugely overpaying him even if he duplicated 2023 for the next 10 years. He’s put up 1 better than average year and they gave him a super star contract.

Yes, I would pay him 25M per year for 5-6 years. 25M would not an be an excessive hit to the payroll and I think you could likely count on him being a better than average performer over the length of the contract. He would provide stability while you developed home grown talent.

The Phoenix Suns sold for $4B the same time Arte had his club for sale.

I think an MLB franchise in So Cal would be worth more than an NBA franchise here in PHX. Arte probably thinks so too but Mr. Market says to the best knowledge, the value is it is somewhere north of $3B.

Put some new paint on the Big A, throw in some condos and shops and Arte can easily see $4B.

***And while i mention the stadium, it stuns me a bit to see how fast The Walt Disney Corporation is moving and able to move to put a third park in west of DTD (lots happening with city/planning in 2024), while its just crickets for St College Blvd/Katella.

Evan Longoria is still unsigned at 38, would make a good back up possibly as his starting full-time days are done, and Chapman will cost a lot more than Arturo is likely to authorize anyway. I bet he will take just about any amount to play one more season and he might have some value in July because of injuries to other clubs. Just a thought.

Longoria is going to turn 39 this year. He hasn’t managed more than 266 ABs in 4 straight seasons. Last year he played in 74 games. His production has been way down since his mid 30s and now he is closer to 40. Other than a recognizable name, I just don’t see why the Angels would sign him other than for maybe 1 year and $1.5m. And why would he, a very rich man, want to move his family for that? Also there is some talk about his possible retirement. He is in the process of deciding whether to hang up his spikes.
