Angels Lost Again Postgame

The Angels lost today 8-5 to the Padres. Sorry this is not more elaborate. I forgot I said I would write it. The season looked so promising a week or two ago and now this.

Your thoughts?

God gave Job boils, among other things.
I feel like He gave me “being an Angels fan.”

The effed-up part of it is: I don’t even believe in Him. Man, did I get rooked!

I really appreciate all of the optimists on this site. It reminds me of me for a lot of years. My problem now is that I just don’t see there’s anything to be optimistic about while Arte owns the team and this current organization is in place. I’m hoping that, at some point, there will be brand new player, development, scouting, and a true baseball organization in place. I really see that as the only way to get back to the glory of the early 2000s.

Shohei Q&A session:

Q: Last time it was the cracked fingernail which forced you to come off the mound. Was it the blister this time?

A:It was the broken fingernail like the last outing. The fingernail did not quite heal, so it felt exactly the same way.

Q: Is the fingernail injury going to affect your batting for the next three games before ASG?

A: Since my at bat was coming up quickly, I thought it be better if someone else took my place. As far as the next three games are concerned, I have to wait and see. If I can bat, I would like to. As for pitching, there is relatively longer period of time before my scheduled outing, so I will use the time to let it heal completely.

Q: You will probably not pitch in ASG?

A: No. It is going in the direction of not pitching. It would be tough to pitch in this condition.

Q: Your velos were not as fast as usual. Did the fingernail issue have anything to do with the decreased velo?

A: I just could not grip baseball as firmly as I should, and that led to not being able to generate the desired speed. I was able to use fastballs in middle innings to escape some troublesome situations successfully, but towards the end of my outing today, I was having difficulties in gripping baseball.

Q: Trout is now on IL, and Rendon was also subbed out in the middle of the game today.

A: We are in difficult circumstances, but my teammates and I are doing our best. We have to turn our attention to the next game and accumulate as many wins as we can.

Q: What was your impression of Padres batting you faced today?

A: I did allow a few runs and several base runners, but I felt I was able to pitch myself out of surrendering big inningss, and I felt good about that part. I wanted to pitch as many innings as I could, and even in the last inning, I thought I would be able to hold the fort, but they were good batters and were able to hit my mistakes hard.

Q: Did you limit the types of pitches because of your fingernail issues today.

A: I was pretty much able to use all of my pitches today. I thought I used fastballs, different types of sliders, and splitters.

Q: So, you did have concerns about how you would pitch today?

A: Yes, a little. I was not 100% today, but most of us pitchers do not always pitch in best condition. All of us starters are expected to make our regular turns, and it is our job to pitch long innings and hold our opponents from scoring. If I had done better in the last inning, I would have been satisfied with my outing today.

Q: In 5th inning with runners on 1st and 3rd, did you raise your pitching gear?

A: I thought I was able to pitch with overall calmness, but when I was facing Soto, I did swing my arm harder to strike him out.

Q: The chance of us seeing you pitch in ASG is not that great?

A: Based on what happened today, I would say it would be tough to pitch. Whatever and wherever I can take part in ASG, I would like to do so. Home Run Derby would be another event that I would not be able to partake because of the way I am feeling today.

Q: The number of injured players on Angels is increasing.

A: With the ASG break coming up, Angels are expected to have some players return to action after the break. Right now, if we can win the next three games, then I feel like we are right back in business.

Thank you for posting these for us. It’s fascinating to see the way Japanese media asks questions of Ohtani.

Going to continue my break from watching the Angels again. I do check the scores after the fact and enjoy the wrap ups and discussions here though! Thanks all.

Tbh I did not see it the same way in terms of Nevin, but he has in fact hampered his team by being way to loyal to “clubhouse vets” and giving too much playing time to average guys. Way too many at bats to Ward and Rengifo. He says he loves Mickey like a son so let him bat against a lefty so that he can learn. Mickey has a little Garret Anderson to his swing. Let him figure it out. Ward came into the year announcing he was going to hit 30 bombs and 900 OPS which is the problem with his approach. I’d rather watch Moniak and Adell everyday and let Ward and Renfroe split or better yet trade one for relief pitching and call up Cabbage.

I don’t get the vet loyalty to Ward – he was borderline out of the franchise until he hit a HR in Scoiscia’s last day .

And ironically considering how identical Ward’s and Renfroe’s OPS is with RISP (~.500) what do you have to lose by benching at least one in favor of the kids?

This I agree with. I’m just not sold on Adell based on prior performance. But maybe it will be different this time.

The injuries are all so very unfortunate. Hard to navigate through all of this. Stay hungry,

Been happening since 2015. Are we going to play the “team just needs to be healthy again next year, everyone will be in full health by then” card for the ninth time?

O’Hoppe
Neto
Urshela
Trout
Drury
Rendon (probably)
Walsh (minors)

That’s almost the entire starting lineup not playing

On June 17th, we had the Royals down 8-2 in the bottom of the 7th in KC but we ended up losing 10-9. I was biking outside of Yellowstone and saw the score on Gameday at 8-2 in the 7th inning as I got into cellphone range. I was so excited as it looked like the Angels were going to contend this season. But losing that game at the time felt bad. If we would have won that game we would have been 41-32. Since that game, we are 5 wins and 10 losses. What a tumble we have taken.

More postgame notes

Ohtani speaks

Jeff Fletcher

Shohei Ohtani said “we’ll see going forward the next 3 games” about hitting until the All-Star break.

He said he’s not planning to pitch in the All-Star Game.

He said “hopefully I can heal” in the 9 or 10 days before his next Angels start, after the break.

About Rendon

Jeff Fletcher

Anthony Rendon walked out of the clubhouse on crutches. He was able to put some weight on his foot but he said it was painful.

If you want to laugh and feel bad at the same time, or whatever emotions this may bring out

Sam Blum

Anthony Rendon on his injuries this season:

“It’s almost comical. It’s just frustrating. I don’t know what to do. I’m lost.”

When asked if he expects to go on the IL, Rendon said he’ll know more tomorrow but “It’s not looking good.”

Rendon is a fraud. His “I’m lost” comment is pure bullshit. He doesn’t want to give max effort, and every little ding is a trip to the IR.

If, god forbid, we lose tomorrow and also both games can the dodgers, all the good feeling from various points if the season will be nullified. We’d be under .500, having lost 9 of 10 (‘cause we’ve currently lost 6 of 7). That wouldn’t be too much different from losing 10 straight.

So…the cure would be winning our next 3

That’s not realistic right now. You are thinking with your heart Eric. I would love that too,but I just don’t see it happening…

I appreciate that thought process Eric. But isn’t the last 9 seasons relevant as to the likelihood of that? My suggestion is that everyone here just be realistic. If you evaluate things with non-emotional, non-hopeful eyes what does reason suggest?
