The Angels reinstated Archie Bradley from the injured list and designated Mike Mayers for assignment. In even more interesting news, The Angels selected the contract of Logan O’Hoppe and designated Magneuris Sierra for assignment. O’Hoppe was slated to catch for the MLB club last night. Best of luck, Logan! The Angels designated Mike Ford for assignment because Anthony Rendon is reinstated from the injured list. The Angels will play a man short for the next five days because Rendon is serving out his suspension. He will be available to play the last three games of the season.
The Rays activated Tyler Glasnow and placed Brandon Lowe on the 60 day IL. The Braves selected the contract of Silvino Bracho. The Padres, for their part, selected the contract of Brandon Dixon. Byron Buxton had season ending knee surgery.
Today is the day we see the list of impending second base free agents. I suspect that either David Fletcher or Luis Rengifo will play second base for the Angels next season and the other one might be dangled out there as trade bait this off season.
The White Sox shut Tim Anderson down due to his middle finger injury. The Bird’s the word. The Brewers will probably put Adrian Houser on the 15 day IL. The Phillies outrighted Johan Camargo to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
Richard Bleier of the Marlins was called for three straight balks in one inning. Don Mattingly got himself ejected and the pitcher was also ejected after the inning was over.

Here we go again that we underachieved
WE WEREN’T THAT GOOD TO BEGIN SANS 2 PEOPLE.
“You Are What Your Record Says You Are” Former NY Giants, NY Jets, Dallas Cowboys coach…….Bill Parcells
Angels currently with the 10th pick. Out of the lottery, right? Baltimore has let me down. It looks like Seattle is going to make it.
Well who would’ve thunk that?
No one asked me, but: Fletcher is an All-Star second baseman and has played injured and will return as a All-Star next season….Walsh will return as an All-Star next season also and may need to platoon…..O’Hoppe in return for Marsh was a great trade for the Halos….Rengifo has some trade value, but with the Angels every season having a Lion’s share of injuries, who is the to play next year’s infield injuries?….I would like to see Rendon healthy for just one season, but that could be said about Trout also…..I am going to really miss Shohei it he does not re-sign with the Angels….Rebound season for so many in 2023, Trout, Rendon, Fletch, Walsh, and Stassi. Yes, I said Trout. What if he could play in 145-150 games?….How can the team replace Ohtani the pitcher or Ohtani the hitter-you can’t. So, if traded expect a truck load or just kept him until he walks….PTP does not need replacing as many believe, he was brought in with the chore of turning this team around and has do a good job in doing so. With all the injuries, lack of wiggle room with payroll, and an owner that is way to involved, PTP has shown he is very capable of turning this team into winners….My additional 2 cents worth, I would like to see Swanson signed in the off season. Soto and Squid are fine, and Neto is nice to hope for to progress, but Swanson is proven, and the money will not be 35 million a season. Swanson plays above average defense and can hit. Soto and Squid will be fine if Ohtani is resigned….Hard to conceive that the World Series will not be between the Asstros and Dodgers. New York headquarters for TV and Radio and MLB-TV hoping for the MFY you can bet, the rating always highest for NY vs LA. But the grudge match with Houston and LA will draw big too…..I always dislike when the MLB season closes and we under achieve and are left feeling what if, but I will miss the weekend’s games as we will be on a voyage on the ocean for the Huntington Beach Air-Show and having ourselves and a lot of friends a great time in grand style, only 100 feet of boat holds a lot of people. Have a great weekend my friends and on Monday afternoon I will catch up with the back reading I will be doing.
Does anyone know what the actual rule is regarding the ability to just bring back Rendon with 5 games left, so he just serves his suspension while still “recuperating” and then coming back next year?
I know people are just assuming there is some rule, but does anyone actually know what the rule is?
He has to play some innings.
and he mustn’t engage in fisticuffs with the other team
considering he was on the 60 day IL, they had to DFA him to add him back to the roster, so that’s essentially the “rule”
I’m sure there’s some kind of medical evaluation that has to be done, but I can’t ever remember a time when a team faked that just to get a suspension started
You don’t DFA someone to add them back to the 40 man roster. You DFA SOME ONE ELSE to add the 60 day IL player back onto the roster. Although after the season is officially over (November 1st?) everyone on the 60 day IL has to be added back onto the 40 man or released
Ya DFA someone else, that’s what I meant, good catch
Currently we have 5 players on the 60 Day IL Walsh, Diaz, Canning, Velazquez & C Rod. I doubt we will be making roster spots for all of these players considering that there other Rule 5 draft protection decisions for players like Kevin Maitan Robinson Pina or even Jake Kalish that will be eligible and will need to be added if we are to protect them.
Didn’t they DFA Ford to make room for Rendon? Or was it Sierra?
To activate a player off the 60-day IL they must have been on the IL for 60 days and the team must have an open spot on the 40-man roster. That’s it. There is no suspended player anti-manipulation rule. At least, there is no such rule that has been leaked to the public.
Didn’t they activate him already?
Ok, if Ford is down, who gets First Base?
If who gets first base then we have to put what at second?
I don’t know….
Behind the Athletic paywall is an article by Keith Law calling Logan O’Hopper the number one prospect for 2022, ahead of Corbin Carroll, Gunner Henderson and everybody else.
Prospect of the Year was the distinction- out of all the Touted Ones, he done real good
Own the tie breaker in head to head vs Orioles.
Absolutely no one here gives a shit. 💩
Please stop wasting our time.
I hope Dipoto wins it!!!!
Sorry about offending THE BOI
You know, we probably wouldn’t even care, but you’ve been such a dick about this all season.
Why do you even use the name 2002heaven when you are clearly a Mariners fan and don’t like the Angels? You desecrate the memory of that season by using that name.
Maybe because there’s no analogous year in Mariner history 😭😂
I don’t have to love and pay homage to a guy who wrecked a solid organization and turned it into the Pittsburgh Pirates since the final out of the 2009 ALCS. I’m a way better fan than most here, because I refuse to see false improvement when it just isn’t there.
Owns several dozen women and a pile of cars….
Is that you Kyle Seager?
Shohei going for #15. Last year he led the staff with 9 wins. That’s right. Our last 15 game winner was GRich in 2015.
I had hoped that Shohei will reach 40 HRs, but it looks like 35 it is. I do hope Trout finishes at 40 though.
Imagine that, two players at those HR numbers and the team is at 4th place in the division.
no need to imagine it, amirite?
It blows and I’m sad to see the season come to an end. As always.
Glaus, Vaughn, Anderson, Salmon all hit 30+ for the 2000 Angel team that was barely over .500 – maybe we need 2 more 40 HR guys to get to being merely mediocre?
Which led to the Bill Bavasi & Terry Collins firings and eventual hiring of Bill Stoneman & Mike Scioscia
I mentioned elsewhere, but Trout reaching 40 homers with a 1.000 OPS would be a nice achievement with less than 500 at bats.
3rd in the division, but yes, it is difficult to believe the Angels screwed this season up so badly (well, until you look at the roster of people they played due to the presence of holes and the lack of any depth).
The Twins are wasting Byron Buxton’s prime. Their fans must be dehydrated from all the weeping and self pity drool that comes with throwing away such a treasure.
Yep. It’s obvious that any non-playoff team must send their players to the MFY.
he’s wasting his own prime by never being healthy
We’re wasting our prime by talking about him.
I wonder if it increases Rendon’s trade value if he serves his suspension now.
I’m kidding, I know he has no trade value. Russell Westbrook has far more trade value than him.
I said it yesterday as was hammered but the Giants (my NL Team) have deep pockets this winter and won’t bring back Longo, could be an other Will Wilson type of trade. I like Rendon but I bet he plays better in the NL.
I would love that. They’re cheap so I think they will go with David Villar who looks promising.
I don’t think the Giants are cheap. Farhan is just against long-term deals and is patient. He was criticized for not landing RH hitting help last year. This are going to change in 2023.
Rendon’s contract is not of the type he generally likes.
I want the Angels to have some of that cheapness.
Time to remove the beer goggles FA
He may have the lowest trade value in the MLB… and yet, he’s so much more successful, rich, well liked and good looking than you. You hide it well, it’s not like 80% of your comments lead back to him or anything, but he must really eat at you.
I actually think Rendon is pretty tradable if we ate 60% of his contract. Plenty of teams saw how he looked in 2020 and could write off injuries as injuries.
There is also a track record of guys performing well and staying healthier after leaving Anaheim.
We will keep him but he’s not unmoveable. If he gets on base at a good clip next year plenty of teams would take him on the discount.
Or we could ‘write off injuries as injuries’, right?
(Sorry, I am just getting tired of the talk of trading any player who is injured as if that means unable to play the game again – legacy of Cozart and Mo Vaughn, maybe).
It’s time for Perry to step away from the buffet table and start dangling. If Rengifo or Fletcher is the bait to get the Angels something more sexier, you do it.
Won’t happen until after the World Series. He may already have sent word out amongst other teams as that list of free agent 2nd baseman is not stellar.
Second base is about the shallowest position in baseball, so many teams have a great need there. I think we could attract something back for Rengifo.
I think Rengifo’s a guy we could actually get something back for and he’s the player with actual value we could stand to part with. I think gambling on Fletch coming back at 2B strong isn’t the worst move we can make, especially if trading Renny in the same plan nets us something helpful.
Although, if we really want to upgrade multiple areas, trade Ohtani, Sandoval, Suarez, Barria, Ward, Herget and Rengifo. Then offload Rendon and Trout for salary relief. Then play Walsh, Fletcher and Stassi until they show some value and trade them…. BOOM! Transformation.
Spend 50M on player payroll. Spend 10M on a POBO, a Director of Player Development, a Pro Scouting Director and an Am Scouting Director and get them all the underling nerds they want. Hire a 33 year old manager I have never heard of. Party time.
Am I wrong in thinking it’s more likely nothing happens to this team until new ownership is identified?
That is my thought. I don’t think we do much until we get a new owner.
I’d imagine so…. yes.
Though it would be hilarious if Arte, knowing a sale may take a while, just goes ape shit and blows the payroll up to 300M in a last drunken brawl before he jumps ship.
Fletch is under contract for at least 3 more years $20 Mi so with his recent injury riddled history hes not going anywhere. ( No we are not throwing in prospects Mr. Barley Can of Corn) Rengifo will be arbitration eligible for the first time next year. So not knowing Seller McScrooge budget for next year, I have no idea what will happen.
I would prefer Fletch at second and Rengifo more of a super utility player while acquiring an established shortstop (until Neto or even Soto could take on the full time role) eventually we will need to find another spot for Fletcher in 2024 as 20 year old Kyren Paris is on his way but we still have black holes at first base and left field that need to be addressed as well as another starter) it doesn’t make sense to fill one hole while creating another .
Don’t forget the bullpen. And an injury replacement for Rendon.
We have too much $$$ tied up in Loup & Tepera with a departing owner to justify any new bullpen additions. With the ascension of Torres, Murphy, Joyce and others I have to believe next years bullpen additions will be in house.
Yeah, with so many arms needing a look it would be kind of dumb to blow more money on pen arms.
💪 💪 💪 …….the Boi speaks!!!
Now if only you WOULDN’T….
I would be fine with packing Loup off somewhere.
With Rengifo’s breakout (sort of), I would roll with those two if it came to it. But like you said, I too prefer Fletch at 2nd and I don’t like Rengifo at SS full time. Agree, Rengifo’s role was always going to be super utility. If a team insisted on acquiring Rengifo and netted us a good player, I think you have to consider.
Rengifo’s trade value will never be higher. I would dangle him and see what we could get back.
I would end the sentence at, “time for Perry to step away.”
I think he needs more time, as any GM would to make the team their own. I was happy to see Keith Law at the Athletic have O’Hoppe as the best prospect performance of the minor league season. He also mentions Neto as having the best truncated prospect season. So if those two can continue to grow into quality MLB players, I’d say Perry did pretty good in acquiring young talent, which is really the main thing this team needs.
You’re more patient than me. I don’t see any evidence of a winning plan in place.
so Perry acquiring via draft and trade two highly regarded prospects that seem close to contributing at the ML level isn’t evidence of a plan in any form? mmmkay
He turned Brandon Marsh/Noah Syndergaard into Brandon Marsh with more power and a legitimate catching prospect who made the show last night. I’d say that was an underrated low-key win at the trade deadline.
I liked Marsh and was excited for his future as a Halo, but now that he’s gone and we have a top catching prospect, I’m happy with the trade and see the foresight in it. Stassi is ok, I guess, but it’d be nice to have a legit top MLB catcher on this team for once.
How do we know he’s that good yet (see HH Jo Adell fans who were drooling over the thought of Willy Mays 2.0 patrolling LF at Anaheim……..and then 2020 happened.)
We don’t – but the cost was the equally unproven Brandon Marsh (which was replaced with the unproven Moniak).
We don’t know. But if O’Hoppe and Marsh were standing in front of me and I got to choose which one I wanted to be on the Halos for the next 5-6 years, I would choose O’Hoppe. Which would you choose?
We desperately needed the catching depth.
Outfielders grow on trees.
He couldn’t tell the difference between the 2 players. he probably post a picture of Rasputin by mistake.
NO! I have watched dozens of baseball games and baseball knowledge literally seeps from my pours. I’m not just some dumbf*** fan who starts demanding a GM get fired less than a year after he gets hired! I am a brilliant and dedicated baseball fan who starts demanding a GM get fired after less than a year! Sure, before said GM was hired I complained that the team is an irreparable wasteland. And sure, most of the guys I demanded he sign in the off season sucked. And yes, there have been injuries and maybe it’s unrealistic for me to demand that “depth” covers hundreds of innings at several positions. But a real baseball man would have fixed it all in 11 months. And a really real baseball man would have made awesome trades after the trade deadline instead of bringing in scrap heap players that remind me that I’m a loser. Fire Perry!
There is only one real man that needs to take a look in the mirror, and we all know who that is. RenDONE
He never looks in a mirror. He just looks people right in the eyes and sees their visceral sense of admiration, respect and attraction reflected back at him…. or he watches the eyes of the weak, flabby and envious look away…. society is his mirror.
I thought it was tootytoo.
your brain might getting a little fogged up there ML . Dumping Perry at this point would not be very smart
Everyone knows that the sign of an org with a plan is that they fire managers and GMs etc right away as soon as things don’t work perfectly. See, you just keep doing that until something works finally. You also need to do the same with prospects…. I’d say about 60 PAs is enough to know what you’ve got. You’ll see you either have a total loser like Rengifo and Ward or a winner like Rengifo and Ward.
That’s what dominant teams like the Browns do.
I’m sure you love rooting for a team that never gets to the playoffs despite having two all time greats. It’s cool Minasian has nothing to do with that failure.
If you hurr dee durr dee nevah durr Optimus Prime grapes!
Those All Time Greats have done plenty of failing on their own over the last few years. I want to save everyone from having to suffer through having all time greats on the team by getting rid of them so we can all root for Jed Lowrie 2.0. GET IT DONE PERRY!
Who the hell’s trading for Fletcher? Is there a GM out there, or even a POBO, who is a totally different thing, that is into mystery and suspense and wants to trade for Fletcher to see if he’ll actually play some games AND see if he sucks while doing it or will he get the good Fletcher we saw sometimes? What do people think we’d get back for that? What do the same people think we’ll get for Max Stassi?
Bleier’s performance was very Rocky.
I dont agree with dangling either Rengifo or Fletch either. It looks like this team will not be spending money in the offseason, unless it’s to re-sign Shohei. So I don’t expect a big splash SS. Given the injuries that Fletch has had, I wouldn’t rely on him being healthy the full season. If Rengifo is gone and Fletch goes down, then the team will resort to the likes of Velasquez again to play majority of the season. I don’t think Soto is quite there yet to handle a full-time starting job. He would be better off in the minors, or as a back-up to either Fletch or Rengifo. I think there should be enough room for both Fletch and Rengifo next season.
Our off season is literally going to be “Do what ever potential buyer wants with Ohtani” followed by signing two warm bodies to throw innings in our rotation plus maybe an Eric Thames type DH if needed. We won’t even sign another Squid cause we have Squid. That’s it. We won. Arte’s selling.
When Arte sells I’m going to either Tijuana or Amsterdam to celebrate.
💪 💪 💪 💪
Great. Make sure you don’t come back.
oh no!! THE BOI speeks again!!
Is Jer Jer gonna let you out of that cage in his basement? Will the ball gag come out so you can have a treat? It will be a magical day.
When you run into a cop in TJ, please make sure to be as annoying to him as you are to us.
That is a reasonable prediction.
As to the second base situation and comments about dangling Fletcher or Rengifo as trade bait, why not just bring them both back? Play Fletcher at short. Play Rengifo at second. Work in Soto as a slot player if he looks fine. Rendon at third. Have Duffy as a backup.
This team needs consistent hitting. It doesn’t need another field only SS. A 2023 batting order like this is important:
(A real hitter who plays LF and/or 1B — JD Martinez maybe or Mancini or someone else)
Walsh or another 1B candidate that can hit consistently
O’Hoppe or other catcher (Stassi or Thaiss)
Good offense comes from not having holes in the lineup. Fill the holes please.
I thought coming into the season that Fletch could handle SS. And While I think he could be serviceable for a few innings/games, being the long term SS I don’t think he is suited for. He does not nearly have the arm strength on a lot of the throws you need a SS to make
I think Fletch has the range, but doesn’t have the arm strength. That is just my Lyle eye test.
No range, no arm, no power
He may not have the arm but He definitely has the range .Defensive metrics prove this fact. Not sure what power has to do with the requirements of being a major league shortstop Unfortunately you like the awareness to see this reality.
I think it’s just a matter of some folks thinking this line up has too much twink in it.
I’ve been saying that since…. oh wait. STFU. No one cares.
Francisco Lindor and Willy Adames would agree
105 rbi’s for Lindor and 30 hrs and 96rbi’s for Adames.
2B is a gutty little under talented guy position for Rudy Ruettiger types. SS meanwhile is a Thoroughbred 5 star high level athlete position………walk-ons need not apply.
💪 💪 💪 💪
You lost me when my eyes filled with laughter tears at the mention of “real”, JD Martinez, and defensive positions of any kind….. whooooo…. that was funny. CtPG guy will LOVE him in LF.
Manny Ramirez, Yordan Alvarez, Reggie Jackson
For next year, I expect a fill the glaring holes and hope for the best type season.
Nobody is going to trade for Rendon, so we should just bite the bullet and play him.
In the middle-infield market, it’s really only the top guys like Swanson, Trea, Boegarts, and Correa that are worth pursuing. Any of them is going to be really expensive. The rest of the market aren’t going to be significantly better than our in-house options. I would ignore middle infield and just go with Rengifo, Fletcher, and Velazquez (hope his right-handed only hitting helps some) with Soto in AAA. If Neto or Paris look like they’re ready at some point, there won’t be anyone that really needs to be displaced. Middle infield looks like a position that the angels have the potential to have cost-controlled options for awhile.
Catcher is similar. I don’t have faith that we’ll be in good shape at catcher, but O’Hoppe may be ready, but if not, just go with Stassi and Thaiss. There aren’t great options there either unless you can make a trade with the Blue Jays for their surplus.
I wouldn’t object to signing a starting pitcher. We can certainly use more of that. I think that Ohtani, Sandoval, Detmers (if managed properly), and Suarez (if managed properly) are all worthy of being rotation members. I wouldn’t mind getting some more depth there.
We need help at 1B and LF. I’m not ready to give up on Adell just yet, but I also don’t want to just hand him the job. The shift ban probably help Walsh more than the average player, but he needs a platoon-mate. He’s already 29 years old, so I don’t expect that hole in his game to disappear.
For the Angels to compete, a lot of our in-house players are going to have to make it happen. I don’t see a good way to buy a great team.
Jesus Aguilar at 1B. Griffin Canning will provide the rest…..
