LA Angels Thursday News Crash: O’Hoppe Along

The Angels reinstated Archie Bradley from the injured list and designated Mike Mayers for assignment. In even more interesting news, The Angels selected the contract of Logan O’Hoppe and designated Magneuris Sierra for assignment. O’Hoppe was slated to catch for the MLB club last night. Best of luck, Logan! The Angels designated Mike Ford for assignment because Anthony Rendon is reinstated from the injured list. The Angels will play a man short for the next five days because Rendon is serving out his suspension. He will be available to play the last three games of the season.

The Rays activated Tyler Glasnow and placed Brandon Lowe on the 60 day IL. The Braves selected the contract of Silvino Bracho. The Padres, for their part, selected the contract of Brandon Dixon. Byron Buxton had season ending knee surgery.

Today is the day we see the list of impending second base free agents. I suspect that either David Fletcher or Luis Rengifo will play second base for the Angels next season and the other one might be dangled out there as trade bait this off season.

The White Sox shut Tim Anderson down due to his middle finger injury. The Bird’s the word. The Brewers will probably put Adrian Houser on the 15 day IL. The Phillies outrighted Johan Camargo to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.

Richard Bleier of the Marlins was called for three straight balks in one inning. Don Mattingly got himself ejected and the pitcher was also ejected after the inning was over.

No one asked me, but: Fletcher is an All-Star second baseman and has played injured and will return as a All-Star next season….Walsh will return as an All-Star next season also and may need to platoon…..O’Hoppe in return for Marsh was a great trade for the Halos….Rengifo has some trade value, but with the Angels every season having a Lion’s share of injuries, who is the to play next year’s infield injuries?….I would like to see Rendon healthy for just one season, but that could be said about Trout also…..I am going to really miss Shohei it he does not re-sign with the Angels….Rebound season for so many in 2023, Trout, Rendon, Fletch, Walsh, and Stassi. Yes, I said Trout. What if he could play in 145-150 games?….How can the team replace Ohtani the pitcher or Ohtani the hitter-you can’t. So, if traded expect a truck load or just kept him until he walks….PTP does not need replacing as many believe, he was brought in with the chore of turning this team around and has do a good job in doing so. With all the injuries, lack of wiggle room with payroll, and an owner that is way to involved, PTP has shown he is very capable of turning this team into winners….My additional 2 cents worth, I would like to see Swanson signed in the off season. Soto and Squid are fine, and Neto is nice to hope for to progress, but Swanson is proven, and the money will not be 35 million a season. Swanson plays above average defense and can hit. Soto and Squid will be fine if Ohtani is resigned….Hard to conceive that the World Series will not be between the Asstros and Dodgers. New York headquarters for TV and Radio and MLB-TV hoping for the MFY you can bet, the rating always highest for NY vs LA. But the grudge match with Houston and LA will draw big too…..I always dislike when the MLB season closes and we under achieve and are left feeling what if, but I will miss the weekend’s games as we will be on a voyage on the ocean for the Huntington Beach Air-Show and having ourselves and a lot of friends a great time in grand style, only 100 feet of boat holds a lot of people. Have a great weekend my friends and on Monday afternoon I will catch up with the back reading I will be doing.

Does anyone know what the actual rule is regarding the ability to just bring back Rendon with 5 games left, so he just serves his suspension while still “recuperating” and then coming back next year?
I know people are just assuming there is some rule, but does anyone actually know what the rule is?

considering he was on the 60 day IL, they had to DFA him to add him back to the roster, so that’s essentially the “rule”

I’m sure there’s some kind of medical evaluation that has to be done, but I can’t ever remember a time when a team faked that just to get a suspension started

Cowboy26

You don’t DFA someone to add them back to the 40 man roster. You DFA SOME ONE ELSE to add the 60 day IL player back onto the roster. Although after the season is officially over (November 1st?) everyone on the 60 day IL has to be added back onto the 40 man or released

Currently we have 5 players on the 60 Day IL Walsh, Diaz, Canning, Velazquez & C Rod. I doubt we will be making roster spots for all of these players considering that there other Rule 5 draft protection decisions for players like Kevin Maitan Robinson Pina or even Jake Kalish that will be eligible and will need to be added if we are to protect them.

To activate a player off the 60-day IL they must have been on the IL for 60 days and the team must have an open spot on the 40-man roster. That’s it. There is no suspended player anti-manipulation rule. At least, there is no such rule that has been leaked to the public.

I actually think Rendon is pretty tradable if we ate 60% of his contract. Plenty of teams saw how he looked in 2020 and could write off injuries as injuries.

There is also a track record of guys performing well and staying healthier after leaving Anaheim.

We will keep him but he’s not unmoveable. If he gets on base at a good clip next year plenty of teams would take him on the discount.

Second base is about the shallowest position in baseball, so many teams have a great need there. I think we could attract something back for Rengifo.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I think Rengifo’s a guy we could actually get something back for and he’s the player with actual value we could stand to part with. I think gambling on Fletch coming back at 2B strong isn’t the worst move we can make, especially if trading Renny in the same plan nets us something helpful.

Although, if we really want to upgrade multiple areas, trade Ohtani, Sandoval, Suarez, Barria, Ward, Herget and Rengifo. Then offload Rendon and Trout for salary relief. Then play Walsh, Fletcher and Stassi until they show some value and trade them…. BOOM! Transformation.

Spend 50M on player payroll. Spend 10M on a POBO, a Director of Player Development, a Pro Scouting Director and an Am Scouting Director and get them all the underling nerds they want. Hire a 33 year old manager I have never heard of. Party time.

Fletch is under contract for at least 3 more years $20 Mi so with his recent injury riddled history hes not going anywhere. ( No we are not throwing in prospects Mr. Barley Can of Corn) Rengifo will be arbitration eligible for the first time next year. So not knowing Seller McScrooge budget for next year, I have no idea what will happen.

I would prefer Fletch at second and Rengifo more of a super utility player while acquiring an established shortstop (until Neto or even Soto could take on the full time role) eventually we will need to find another spot for Fletcher in 2024 as 20 year old Kyren Paris is on his way but we still have black holes at first base and left field that need to be addressed as well as another starter) it doesn’t make sense to fill one hole while creating another .

I think he needs more time, as any GM would to make the team their own. I was happy to see Keith Law at the Athletic have O’Hoppe as the best prospect performance of the minor league season. He also mentions Neto as having the best truncated prospect season. So if those two can continue to grow into quality MLB players, I’d say Perry did pretty good in acquiring young talent, which is really the main thing this team needs.

I am a brilliant and dedicated baseball fan who starts demanding a GM get fired after less than a year! Sure, before said GM was hired I complained that the team is an irreparable wasteland. And sure, most of the guys I demanded he sign in the off season sucked. And yes, there have been injuries and maybe it’s unrealistic for me to demand that “depth” covers hundreds of innings at several positions. But a real baseball man would have fixed it all in 11 months. And a really real baseball man would have made awesome trades after the trade deadline instead of bringing in scrap heap players that remind me that I’m a loser. Fire Perry!

I dont agree with dangling either Rengifo or Fletch either. It looks like this team will not be spending money in the offseason, unless it’s to re-sign Shohei. So I don’t expect a big splash SS. Given the injuries that Fletch has had, I wouldn’t rely on him being healthy the full season. If Rengifo is gone and Fletch goes down, then the team will resort to the likes of Velasquez again to play majority of the season. I don’t think Soto is quite there yet to handle a full-time starting job. He would be better off in the minors, or as a back-up to either Fletch or Rengifo. I think there should be enough room for both Fletch and Rengifo next season.

As to the second base situation and comments about dangling Fletcher or Rengifo as trade bait, why not just bring them both back? Play Fletcher at short. Play Rengifo at second. Work in Soto as a slot player if he looks fine. Rendon at third. Have Duffy as a backup.

This team needs consistent hitting. It doesn’t need another field only SS. A 2023 batting order like this is important:

Fletcher
Trout
Ohtani
Rendon
(A real hitter who plays LF and/or 1B — JD Martinez maybe or Mancini or someone else)
Ward
Rengifo
Walsh or another 1B candidate that can hit consistently
O’Hoppe or other catcher (Stassi or Thaiss)

Good offense comes from not having holes in the lineup. Fill the holes please.

I thought coming into the season that Fletch could handle SS. And While I think he could be serviceable for a few innings/games, being the long term SS I don’t think he is suited for. He does not nearly have the arm strength on a lot of the throws you need a SS to make

For next year, I expect a fill the glaring holes and hope for the best type season.

Nobody is going to trade for Rendon, so we should just bite the bullet and play him.

In the middle-infield market, it’s really only the top guys like Swanson, Trea, Boegarts, and Correa that are worth pursuing. Any of them is going to be really expensive. The rest of the market aren’t going to be significantly better than our in-house options. I would ignore middle infield and just go with Rengifo, Fletcher, and Velazquez (hope his right-handed only hitting helps some) with Soto in AAA. If Neto or Paris look like they’re ready at some point, there won’t be anyone that really needs to be displaced. Middle infield looks like a position that the angels have the potential to have cost-controlled options for awhile.

Catcher is similar. I don’t have faith that we’ll be in good shape at catcher, but O’Hoppe may be ready, but if not, just go with Stassi and Thaiss. There aren’t great options there either unless you can make a trade with the Blue Jays for their surplus.

I wouldn’t object to signing a starting pitcher. We can certainly use more of that. I think that Ohtani, Sandoval, Detmers (if managed properly), and Suarez (if managed properly) are all worthy of being rotation members. I wouldn’t mind getting some more depth there.

We need help at 1B and LF. I’m not ready to give up on Adell just yet, but I also don’t want to just hand him the job. The shift ban probably help Walsh more than the average player, but he needs a platoon-mate. He’s already 29 years old, so I don’t expect that hole in his game to disappear.

For the Angels to compete, a lot of our in-house players are going to have to make it happen. I don’t see a good way to buy a great team.
