LA Angels Monday News Crash: Rotational Exercises

Mike Trout visited a top spine specialist who gave him some good news. He needs to do some rotational exercises, but as soon as his rotation is OK he can begin taking batting practice. Reid Detmers had an immaculate inning over the weekend. Jimmy Herget is back and Chase Silseth was optioned to AAA. Sonny Dichiara is having a smashing time as a Trash Panda. Shohei Ohtani weighs in on the great hamburger controversy. The Dodgers have checked in with the Angels concerning a Shohei Ohtani trade. It still doesn’t seem likely.

The Angels Followed their rather terrible game Friday with an offensive explosion on Saturday.

The Seattle Mariners landed Luis Castillo late on Friday. While they obviously want to win now, they have a bunch of guys hovering around the injured list. That could prove inconvenient. They are still throwing at batters.

The Brewers will activate Freddy Peralta from the 60 day injured list this week. Mackenzie Gore of the Padres will be out probably until September with inflammation in his throwing elbow.

The Dodgers are in on Juan Soto. They are also in on Marlins starter Pablo López. Fully expect LA to land Soto. That will push Bellinger out of LA. Dude went Hollywood like Matt Kemp. I’m liking Pablo Lopez. LA – Astros series again.

Make sense. Cardinals dropped their pursuit on Ohtani to land Jose Quintana.

The Ohtani situation will leave everyone unhappy. If he is traded, the franchise will not receive equivalent talent in return. If Ohtani does not re-sign and exits at the end of 2023 season, it’s a loss that will never be overcome. If Ohtani does re-sign, the franchise will have two of the greatest players of this generation that play on teams that struggle to achieve winning records.

I know this is an unpopular take as some believe retaining Ohtani solves a problem. That’s okay – I want to believe too.

So Arte keeps Ohtani for multiple reasons, money is the only one really, but here is the rub. If the Angels are ever going to compete ever again to make the playoffs, he now has to spend money and a lot of it if he is smart. Not that he ever did many smart things since purchasing the team, but now he has to allow PTP to fill the holes with legit players. No more Wade’s, Duffy’s, Goslin’s, Mayfield’s, Suzuki’s, or Villar’s. If he makes anybody who is GM fill in with the Sluggo variety, then not only is he Stupid and Cheap, but senile is also appropriate. If this team does not make significant improvements them Shohei or not the Angels attendance will seriously suffer along with huge drops in Radio and TV ratings.

I think that you are right, but with Ohtani not resigned, then the time has come for this off season to be critical as time has been forced upon him to do the right thing. He might consider even selling the team and call it quits.

As you all know, I (we) hate the Skanks, yet I’m happy to report that they are currently thrashing the Mariners, 6-2 after 4. I hate the Mariners fans as much as I hate the Skank fans…maybe even more because their team head hunts, then they whine about getting hit in the keister. They refused to blame Wanker for heading to our dugout. They refuse to believe Servais orders his pitchers to buzz Trout, to bean Altuve. Ooooooo…I hate ’em!!

So I’m enjoying the Ms lack of success, first against the Cheaters and now against the Skanks.

Not sure if Lamet is a “throw in” even now. It wasn’t long ago that he was near untouchable and it took his arm basically falling off for him to become a tradeable piece, even. If he lasts long enough, he’ll be something, but that’s a big if.

I think we might be able to squeeze a 7-10 rank guy if we kick in $7M to the new team.

Signing Syndergaard turned out to be a flawed acquisition. Not that good and lost a second round draft pick (when the team already had a crappy farm). Organizational malpractice.

The matter was further compounded when Perry failed to plug all the middle infield holes on the roster and committed to two unproven OFs, Heckle and Jeckle. Team never had a chance.

I was really hoping for Stroman. I know he didn’t dominate this season, but I figured he was a decent pitcher and didn’t cost a draft pick. Or Rodon (wow, that would have turned out nicely). I agree that signing Thor, even at the time, was a real head-scratcher.

I’m not a very technical person when it comes to batting, but it seems that Jared pushed hard for power this season. I really hope some tinkering (ala-Taylor Ward pre-injury, or Chris Taylor) helps him get back on track. He fills a need and he’s cheap. His defense is still top-notch (at least according to the eye test). He doesn’t have to be a power hitter. Leave that to Shohei. He’s best when he’s hitting singles and doubles with runners on base.

JackFrost
Super Member
Reply to  smithy610

I am not sure I agree that he has been “trying for power” in 2022, but I do agree that he is at his best hitting the ball back up the middle and the other way. Last season he showed great power to LCF and RCF. This was the result of solid contact and good mechanics…

Really, Walsh’s swing is that of a line-drive hitter. The HR numbers are in a sense accidental or just luxus. This is why I would not give up on Walsh. His swing is solid. Not sure what the main issue is this year, but my guess is just a down year. It would have been very hard to duplicate last season anyway.

Historically, top 3 payroll does not equal championships. While the Yankees have spent more than any other team over the last 20 seasons, it did give them a great W-L record (best overall in that span), but not a lot of Championships.

In fact, over that 20 season span the highest payroll equated into only 3 championships. If you add top 3 to the equation, 6 Teams out of 20 won the WS (33ish% of Championships went to the top 3 spenders). Hmm.. top 3 are 6-14, maybe there’s something to it.

Unless of course your speaking of Western Division Championships (great for dick swinging quotes like “we fly flags”) as winning championships.

Which, I highly doubt you are 🙂

Perry fielding offers now feels like it was an easy way to determine Ohtani’s trade value for a future trade.

The Angels have to know that Ohtani doesn’t want to remain a Halo.

By fielding offers, the Angles also know this was going to alienate Ohtani further.

It sure feels as though the Angels are preparing to trade Ohtani down the road….

They’re shopping him. Also, I don’t think a deal is dead just because Heyman, who is used constantly as leverage, comes out and says it.. Sure this might go on throughout the offseason, but something might materialize by tomorrow.

Agree. The only thing predictable about Arte and the boys is being unpredictable

I don’t think they are shopping him, never have been. But they are listening to offers. If some team comes around, say the White Sox, and offers Dylan Cease and Luis Robert plus 4 solid prospects for him…. yeah, they may take that.

I don’t want him to go, but if the Mets are serious, something around Alvarez and Beaty +, their top 2 prospects that play positions we desperately need, would be interesting.

yah, I’d take that.

Our FO under Arte has always played their cards close to their chest. Nothing new here. As fans, we’re just as much in the dark as everyone else. That leads to a whole lot of hand wringing and wild speculation until something finally happens. Same thing happened before Trout’s big deal happened. Only difference is Ohtani doesn’t have the infamous wife whose family is on the east coast. Instead he has the mom who’s on the east east coast.

I don’t know. We didn’t rest Ohtani at all the past week like we did Thor. It seems to me they weren’t going to trade him all along. They were simply answering calls to find out what his trade value was – just doing their homework. Nothing wrong with that – no obligation to tell us fans anything until afterwards. At the end of the day they tell Ohtani he wasn’t going anywhere and all is good.

If they are going to sign him to an extension, they should figure out his street value. This process helped that a bit. His valuation is the toughest perhaps of all time, so some due diligence is needed.

However, if we fail to sign him AND fail to trade him next year, what a reflection of terrible mismanagement (unless we are challenging for a WS title…lol…).

There’s a REALLY REALLY wide space between listening to offers and shopping a player.

How do you know that with this front office? In general, I would agree, but these guys do not get the benefit of the doubt from me:

If they were shopping him, calling around offering him in trades, it would have made news.

But hey, “You never know” is also great. It works for literally everything.

Why would they not play Thor, but play Ohtani literally everyday if they were hoping for a boat load of players in a trade? That just seemed fishy all along
