Angels End July with a loss

July 31st, what used to be the trade deadline day is now just the last day of July. Who will be here on August 2nd, the actual trade deadline day? Appreciate it, as this may be the last you see from some players.

Not Reid Detmers though, he is here to stay. He went 7 innings, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, striking out 12 and walking 3. However, what was most impressive was his immaculate inning in the 2nd, striking out 3 players with 9 pitches.

Meanwhile, the offense continued to underwhelm, scoring only 2 before the stretch.

Highlighted Recap

Rangers struck first, scoring 1 in the first.

Uh oh

Angels tied it up, however, in the bottom half.

Rengifo good?!

The 2nd was special, however, as Detmers had an immaculate inning.

ANGELS HAVE PITCHING!

The Angels gained the lead in the bottom half, thanks to Squid.

2-1 Angels

However, the Rangers tied it up in the 5th.

oof

Detmers went 7 strong innings, needing the offense to come through. They didn’t, not while he was pitching at least.

It was up to the bullpen to not blow it. Tepera did his job. Not so for Quijada, who loaded the bases in the 9th. D-Cell then blew it, giving up all 3 stranded runners.

Oops he did it again…

Angels lose 5-2 to end their miserable July.

after the Mariners beaned Altuve with the 1st pitch tonight, I think it’s quite likely that Servais ordered his pitchers to buzz the Angels. Trout being the most obvious.

Yet Servais didn’t get suspended at all for his part in fighting.

Mariners fans are totally insane, saying the Angels “ignited the brawl”, as if Wanker’s going to our bench was nothing. And now they’re claiming (and believing!) that Kirby’s beanball “got away from him”.

More than ever I’m hoping the Mariners collapse. I believe they will, although it would be great if they miss the playoffs by one game with Castillo getting the loss.

And Wanker strikes out for the final out since it will be a home game for the Ms

Well we did ignite the brawl. There’s a reason Nevin received the worst suspension out of everyone and he didn’t appeal. We have to call a spade a spade.

Is anyone concerned about the amount of sliders Detmers is throwing? I hope he doesn’t flame out before we can be competitive again.

Zach Neto just hit his first professional home run for the Dust Devils. We desparately need some infusion of bats from the minors, hoping this guy does well.

To not make a significant amount of noise at the deadline would be the most Angels thing ever.

This team needs a full reboot. Get some new blood, shed some payroll. Start over.

with a day off Monday we likely have seen the last of ….? and maybe also ??

Our speculation has been Thor and Ohtani but there’s a chance it’ll be someone else. Hey, maybe nobody but I expect Perry will swing something that will be underwhelming.

Who didn’t play today? Fletch? Ward and Adell pinch-hit. Squinting at that I could see that they were being held out. I’ll whine and cry Tuesday, no matter what

Quick thoughts on Castillo trade. It’s the kind of move I wish the Angels would do. The Reds got a lot of young talent. It weakened the M’s farm system considerably. I would love it if the Angels could get a bunch of young talent in their Org. When it works out (like Detmers) it raises the floor considerably.

Castillo definitely strengthens the M’s pitching staff. If they don’t make the playoffs this season it will be hilarious.

Dipoto’s move here reminds me of the trade for Greinke and other moves in 2014. He is not afraid to go all in. I respect that – but it definitely can weaken a farm system.

It’s a good move…if you are a contender. It could potentially blow up in their face if they don’t make the playoffs and any of those guys become decent MLBers…like what happened with the Greinke trade all those years ago. I think it’s a home run for the Reds as they got max value on him.

I respect Jedi’s balls between the Angels and Mariners, but think his intelligence gets overrated sometimes. Many Mariners fans think he and Servais might get fired if they don’t make the playoffs, hence the desperation trade.

I agree with you. It takes balls on both sides. I think in the long run the Reds will come out the winner – but if the M’s make the playoffs, it’s a good short term move.

Must be nice though to be in that position where you can make those type of trades. With our prospect pool, 1 of those 3 Mariners prospects being involved would have priced us out because we don’t have any Top 100 guys currently.

Exactly. I’d like to be on the other side of that trade (ie the Reds side).

I remember Dipoto mostly for fleecing us of 4 players, including Saunders, Corbin, and Skaggs, for a year and a half of Dan Haren (comparable deal as the Castillo one, except with Dipoto on the other end) That made me quite happy when he was brought in as our GM: unfortunate that he never really pulled a deal like that on either end for us. :/

The Greinke trade gave up more ML ready talent for a shorter term rental. Considering the 1-1/2 years of Control the M’s now have with Castillo, I think their trade for him was a steal.

I personally am excited about Detmers. He looks like the real deal.

Another decent pick by Eppler.

Well I think if you look (just off the top of my head) at Simba (trade) Marsh and Shohei and Detmers – that’s not a bad body of work.

You said “pick” not trade or free agent signing . The cupboard is pretty bare right now . That’s on Eppler.

Not gonna moan about the loss, like I am really shocked, but how about Reid f-ing Detmers. The guy has been dealing all year. He and Sandy are nice finds.

Here’s a bit from mlb.com that is sooooo Tungsten Arm O’Doyle.

“It was part of a stellar outing for the 23-year-old, who set a career high with 12 strikeouts over seven strong innings in a 5-2 loss at Angel Stadium.”

Mid-May, me: Man we’ve got Tepera and Loup as our 7th and 8th inning guys, and Iggy as our closer: Thanks, Perry! This year’s gonna bit LIT!

And I was right! Only, I didn’t know what the meaning of “lit” would be. Oy! Oy vey ist mir!

Angels went 6-18 for July, and I think that’s an accurate reflection on how “good” this team is.

Detmers: first pitcher in 7 years to have an immaculate inning and a no-hitter in the same year. He’s one worth keeping, it seems.

Stupid Q: I lazily Googled and didn’t find the answer immediately, so will ask you guys: is the trade deadline over on Aug 2nd at the stroke of midnight? Or is it over exactly 24 hours before that? Asking for a certain Ohtani-watcher.

Makes me wonder when the last time the Angels didn’t break double-digit wins in a full calendar month’s worth of play? Could this be a first?

Horrible RISP numbers like .190 or something. That’s beyond atrocious considering the roster (Trout pre-injury, Ohtani, Walsh Allstar last year, Ward – questionable all-star) and Rengifo getting hot. Deadline is 3pm PST usually 1pm on the 31st of July.

Batter’s still not protecting the plate w/ 2 strikes, but they are improving with their Playhouse 90 disgust walking away and their stares back at the pitchers is installing fear. Seems like every walk that our pitchers give to the other guys, all come around to score.

Squid screwed the pooch when he drove in a run with the bases loaded with a fly to RF. He needs to be ‘splained to about trAdition. The team is supposed to leave the runners out there.

Did not matter who was brought in from the Blowpen, we were dead meat when our starter was through. The good news we still have a chance to make the Lotto. 😎 Sure glad Detmers doesn’t want out of Dodge yet.

we can still win 103! We’d need to go 60-0 for that. But seriously, the Skanks and Cheaters have both already won more than we’ll win in the entire season.

I’m no manager, but I’m pretty sure you don’t want a guy with a .343 OPS batting leadoff.

Detmers looks great. Angels might have gotten a 1st round pick right for once.
