Angels Release Jose Iglesias

https://www.mlb.com/angels/news/angels-release-shortstop-jose-iglesias

The Angels have released Iglesias. Junk was called up in his place.

I suspect that Captain Jack will play short, Goose will play third, and Rengifo (FSM help us) will be backup infielder.

Don’t know how official any these rankings are really…..

“Defensive Runs Saved has pegged Iglesias as 21 runs below average at shortstop this season, the league’s worst mark for a player at any position. Ultimate Zone Rating and Statcast’s Outs Above Average aren’t quite so bearish, but both systems also peg Iglesias as below average with the glove. Single-season defensive metrics can be variable, and Iglesias is being compared to his peers at shortstop — who tend to be among the game’s best overall infielders. So there remains some hope of him turning things around somewhat, but his unanimously poor ratings this year also likely suggest that his days as one of the sport’s most valuable defenders could be behind him.”

Timing of release is suspect, so we now are waiting “For the rest of the Story”.

So this makes it official, expect another big splash hitter/position player signing.
Albert’s salary comes off the books this season. Most likely a big name free agent SS will be at a December presser and maybe our owner will finally come out of hiding……..
Expect Javy Baez or Corey Seager.

Probably right……….Who would you sign? What would be your plan?

Marcus Semien if he’s available he can play all 3 left side positions and hit.
As far as pitchers go the top two names so far that I know of are Anthony DeSclafani and Kevin Gausman.

And of course the corollary is that no significant money will be spent to bring in a FA starting pitcher who can actually pitch.

He might have at least some say in this move. Joe soured on his defense back in May.

FA SP market is suspect. There are some big names (Scherzer, Verlander, Kershaw, etc) but they all seem to have some kind of red flags. If the likes of Gausman and DeSclafani are the targets, God help us (I think they’ll get overpaid on the account of whatever pixie dust they had in the Bay Area, only to crash to earth after getting the big contract–see Cahill, Trevor.)

I mean I get it with the FA pitcher market, but this is still making me nauseous. If we sign Correa, so help me…

Let’s not kid ourselves anymore. Arte wants to blow his wad on a shortstop this offseason, ignore the pitching market, and expect us to win the World Series with his shiny new toy.

What pitching market?

So this make sense. I guess we don’t have to worry about signing him or Lindor.

The addition of Junk adds so many opportunities for wordplay. The emptiness of our system is the bad part. Nothing but junk to replace Iglesias in the infield.

Halos do have Paris, Jackson, Vera, and Guzman in the farm. #4, #5, #6 and #9 per the updated MLB pipeline. Granted , not ready in 2022 but the following year we could see the best one on the big club.

This is why I was hoping Iglesias had played well enough to be the transition. It just hasn’t worked out, with the glove or the bat. Sad, seems like a good guy.

Whoa so the Angels have Michael Jackson’s daughter in their farm system? Can she pitch?

Well, my guess is they don’t plan to give Iglesias a new contract.

Iggy was not the answer, and Mayfield is not the answer. I’m ok with the team doing the non-tank tank.

Agree Senator, but why not 3-days ago? The Halos stood a better chance at getting someone to bite on the remainder of salary due plus you give Jose a chance to play in the post season. Do the guy a solid, While he was not the answer, evident as the season went on, he was a good teammate and hustled.

I don’t believe he would be eligible foe post season even 3 days ago

For a player to be qualified, he just needs to have been on the active roster Sept. 1 for the team that is in the playoffs.

II don’t believe that pertains to players that were not traded before the deadline or players on active rosters after the trade deadline

I think he needed to clear waivers and become a free agent. The team probably wanted a little time to make sure Mayfield could defend at short. The timing was just plain bad for all concerned.

Any player who has been traded from a different team, spent time in the Minor Leagues, or signed later in the season with the team (no later than August 31) are eligible to participate in the postseason. A postseason roster is allowed up to 25 active players.

A post season player can be anyone on your 40 man roster (or in your system in the case of injuries) as of 9/1/2021

He would have been eligible for the post season provided he had found a new club to join prior to August 31, 2021 11:59 PM. So not sure why the Angels could have made this happen before then.

They probably tried and placed him on waivers. Remember, we didn’t know about Quintana until the Giants claimed him. 28 teams passed on Quintana. Not a stretch to think that all 29 passed on Iglesias.

Angels now selling $3 tickets to remaining home games. You’ll pay more in service fees than actual tickets… and in obvious news trout isn’t coming back this season.

The Millville Meteor flamed out 3 months ago. 2022 cannot get here soon enough.

$3 tickets ain’t bad though, might be worth it to go and see the OC hotties.

We could see that Mayfield was getting the playing time. I assume that they wanted to see his Mayfield could play SS as a backup. Even if you were not going to re-sign Jose, why would you release him? Just does not make sense on the surface.

Yeah, good point. The 28 man versus 40 man roster does limit the September call ups to say the least.

unfortunately the ‘kids” they want to see at shortstop are Mayfield and Rengifo

While he is not a top 10 defender, I still considered him a capable player. What’s the reason? I think he deserved this to occur before Aug 31. Angels…smh.

I wonder if there was something personal behind the scenes?

Usually I don’t like to speculate on that kind of stuff but otherwise it does not make sense.

Could be. This might be similar to the Cam Newton situation in the NFL.

If Newton saw that he was going to be a backup his ego prefered being released to sitting behind a “youngin” (in Captain Jack situation it would be a “youngin” by experience and not chronological years…).

Wasn’t that why the released Pujols too? He didn’t want to play back up to Walsh, and threw a fit.

Now, I don’t know that Iglesias was vocal about it, but I can see him not wanting to settle for a bench spot behind Mayfield.

Maybe just giving him one last look? Hoping someone remembers in trades in future?

We would have to release someone else to make room for Stefanic, while Rengifo is still on the 40-man.

Remember when people were pissing themselves with red faced indignation over Soth playing veterans over Rengifo?

I do.

I don’t get him. He has shown in the past he can field ok and hit pretty well. Then the Covid 2020 no spring training season came and he looked like he’d switched his major to theater. I expected him to bounce back with some reps, but he still sucks. Why Renjifo? Why do you suck?

matthiasstephan

Well, he was hitting well in AAA this year too. I don’t fault them for giving him some reps here in September to see what they have. Maybe AAA fixed his 2020 ailments?

Good to get a look in any case, if we have Mayfield, Stefanic, Barretto (we still have him, right?), and Gosselin mostly battling for a bench role moving forward (we are signing a starting SS, right?).
