Angels lose Pitching Duel in NY, 2-1

Jose Suarez was up against the Bronx bombers in the bandbox of NY. Not only was it a tall order with how hitter friendly the park is, but Gerrit Cole was on the mound for the NYY. Suarez needed a great game to give the team a chance. Unfortunately, the offense was lacking in the hitter friendly park.

Recap

Pitching Duel

Gerrit Cole made Ohtani and Fletcher look foolish. However, the Angels got on the board first with a Justin Upton home run!

Hot Pocket!

Unfortunately, the Yankees responded right back with a 2 run blast in the bottom of the inning. 2-1 NYY after 1.

Gosselin got a leadoff single, but he was stranded. Suarez had a better second, not allowing the deficit to grow. Still 2-1 NYY.

The Angels did nothing in the 3r, going down in order. Suarez responded in kind, still 2-1 NYY after 3.

Cole looked locked in and was going through the Angels lineup easily. Suarez wasn’t having as easy of a time, but was keeping the Yankees at bay. Still 2-1 NYY fter 4.

Angels continued to get nothing from their offense as Cole dominated. Adell get get unlucky, but that isn’t helpful. Suarez was still sharp, though, keeping it 2-1 NYY after 5.

Ohtani almost hit one out, but it did not have the distance. After Fletcher got out, Upton reached on a misplay at 3rd. That was enough to get Cole out of the game as he was pulled with 2 outs in the 6th. Walsh struck out to end the threat. Suarez walked the bases loaded and was pulled. He went 5 innings with only 2 ER but left with a lot of work to do for the bullpen.

Bullpen Duel

Cishek was brought in with the bases loaded in the 6th. He struck out one Stanton and got a double play to end the inning! Still 2-1 NYY after 6.

The Angels did nothing in the 7th. Cishek allowed a walk but got through the 7th without any more runs. Still 2-1 NYY after 7.

In the 8th the Angels couldn’t do a thing yet again, with Ohtani going down on strikes again. Quijada came in for the 8th to try and at least make it the offense’s fault. After getting 2 on, one was caught stealing and a strikeout was achieved for out 2. Maddon saw enough and brought in Guerra to get the last out. He did so and it was still 2-1 NYY after 8.

Last chance for the offense to do something, unfortunately, they couldn’t besides a Walsh single and the Angels lose 2-1 in NY.

Upcoming

The Angels head off to Detroit to face the surprisingly not horrible Tigers. A sweep would help, but that is much easier said than done with this team. Stay hydrated and please drink responsibly.

9-4 with Cincinnati this year and a FA after the 2021 season. But remember what a moron I was when I thought we should’ve went after him at the 2019 Winter Meetings back at HH….. 😆

I didn’t see you bring this up last year when he only pitched 14 innings. Hmm.

He only signed a 2 year deal not a 7 or 10 year deal like we’ve done for other very bad deals. Trevor Bauer was signed for only 3 yrs. Just horrible decisions again and again.. 😫 😠

On a two year deal you would have been screaming bloody murder last year, and suggested Zach Davies had figured it out.

Damn. That’s one scary picture.

I think it’s just that Ohtani can’t handle the bright lights of New York.

The good news is we aren’t getting Arrieta.

Yet, can’t afford the pro-rated on his first visit to the waiver wire. We’ll get him next time for that five-year reunion.

Or even better, failed to buy off on the Cole Hamels showcase.

So I’m betting there are at least a dozen comments celebrating the day Cishek had….

Also of note, Cole was obviously just a goo baby ace. Look at the horrible season he’s had since they band his substances….

I am watching the replay. Knew the final score, but had no idea how the game was played.

Suarez just loaded the bases. Camera on Joe. “The GameThread had a meltdown here I bet” me think. “Chisek” I hear. “Fo sho, the GameThread is losing it.” Cishek gets out of it.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Isn’t that right Facesince1971

is your point that a sucky pitcher must suck every time or else he’s not sucky?

It’s ironic, Arte spends money and the contracts hurt us. The Reds shed salary and it helps them.

The Angels are the lovable losers.

We are wasting Jose Suarez!

Suarez 5.0 IP 1 HR
Bullpen 0 Runs

Cole 5.2 IP 1 HR
Bullpen 0 Runs

To bad Ohtani nor Fletch could get on base in front of Upton

I mean I don’t think we made a choice there. Personally I would have preferred Rendon, and said as much, but we definitely tried to get Cole first.

I really didn’t think we would get Cole, or any Ace, with the way Arte luvs his everyday players for the Main Gate.

Cole looked like he had a little more movement in his pitches than the last time I watched a couple of innings of him pitch.

It was a great, well pitched game in a band box. No blame in a game like this. Tip your cap.

Pitching for the Halos has just been excellent of late. But for us to win we need timely hitting and with a weak line up it is tough to score enough. Our starters are as good as anyone’s team. Good for JUp too today. Hate losing but an exciting game, one swing away.

Yep – I love pitching games like this – except I would have preferred the opposite result.

Yes, it would have been nice to have them healthy all season. Probably would have been fighting Oakland for the Wild card. Instead they can’t stay healthy and we are sub .500. Sorry, but I am getting very tired of these losing seasons.
