LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Playoffs!

Two of the three teams based in Southern California are in the playoffs. And then there is us. We’re the one shitty house with an overgrown yard with a hooptie parked on it in an otherwise nice neighborhood.

At least for now. The 100 loss season was a perfect cap to Arte Moreno’s tenure as owner but we can expect brighter days ahead under Kroenke. It feels so weird to type this, but the Angels have the richest owner in baseball. Granted, Kroenke is highly unlikely to go Steve Cohen and spend money stupidly, but he is a real estate guy and realizes how important hiring the right architect and laying the proper foundation are and that reflects in his sports teams.

I know as fans the front facing image of management is the field manager, but the Angels need a front office and plenty of other things first. There are a ton of reasons why the Angels can slow roll the Kurt Suzuki situation. It’s not like he’s going anywhere.

Getting to know Kurt a bit this year I think the Angels misplayed the situation. I think it is important to have somebody with a positive attitude who can keep the game fun amidst all the losing. But I think that guy is best as a first base or bench coach. Not that it would have mattered a ton this season, but if Suzuki was in either role I think we would all be happy to have him back. But moving him from manager to one of those roles will be awkward. By placing him in the manager’s seat, the Angels now need to either keep him or likely lose him from the organization.

Time to break up the text block. The Angels added a new arm yesterday.

Ok, so let’s bring on the rebuild. 2027 could go a whole lot of different ways. Kroenke could do anything from making a huge, immediate impact to letting the rebuild and tank job continue. We truly have no idea.

What we do know is these guys will no longer be on the Angels roster.

And, finally, Mike Trout is moving off center field. Father Time is undefeated and this position change seems different than others, particularly for Trout.

So now it is time to look forward, particularly in center field. Who will play CF for the Angels in 2027? I have a piece publishing simultaneously On SI that I will link here. And here it is.

But in the meantime I took a look at outfielders the Angels should pursue.

And starting pitchers the team should pursue.

And relievers the team should pursue.

In each exercise I try to identify an A level signing, a solid veteran, and a bounce back candidate. After all, we have no idea what the goal is for 2027 or even who will be calling the shots.

From around baseball:

There are four playoff games scheduled for tomorrow. Looks like I might have to sacrifice myself and smoke some ribs or something for the family.

The Snakes extended their manager for another two years.

FanGraphs thinks everybody but the Yankees is doing playoff roster construction the wrong way.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. Playoff baseball is incredible and I hope to attend another Angels playoff game in a few years. In the meantime, enjoy watching the games on TV.

I’m sorry, but that Isaac Francisco video does not look 93. But – he’s 17 and you can tell has a live arm.

I don’t believe the Kronke’s are coming here to play small ball. They’ll assemble their PBO/GM, assistant GMs, manager and coaches and try to get this team competitive sooner than a 3 to 4+ year “play the kids” rebuild cycle.

We should not be afraid to raise the payroll and go into luxury tax thresholds. But 2027 might be a throw away year (labor stoppage) but in 2028 and 2029, the team needs to go all in and make trades, sign top FAs and build off the kids who have emerged.

Prospects are assets and we cannot be prospect clutching at the opportune moment.

I’ve backed away from pushing a Neto and Detmers trade. Even as much as I dislike Neto’s persona and style of play on the field, he stays. Sure, if I get a bonanza, do it. But cannot just do it for strictly prospects. MLB roster needs help now.

This is not really Kroenke’s MO. He’s more of a builder than a giant spender. He definitely takes advantage of opportunities but will not just come in with a huge wallet. That is not what he does. I do expect an excellent Org will be constructed and when the time is right and opportunity exists, investment in FAs.

Correct and exactly my point. Here’s what ChatGPT had to say:

“Billionaire owner Stan Kroenke has historically not spent a bunch of money on high-priced free agents or players immediately after acquiring a new sports team. His standard operating procedure across his massive sports empire—which includes Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) franchises like Arsenal, the Los Angeles Rams, the Denver Nuggets, and the Colorado Avalanche—is rooted in a self-sustaining model focused on building infrastructure first, establishing strong front-office personnel, and utilizing youth development or smart drafting.”

Yes, once they get their team in place, I think they’ll turn the screws and get the payroll back up to where it needs to be for a team in a large market. I certainly don’t expect or necessarily want them to compete with Kasten or Cohen but I would expect to see a top 7 payroll, currently 22.

I do not think we will maintain status quo on payroll for 3-4 years, intentionally opting to put a sub-standard product on the field just to: (1) to reign in top draft picks and (2) allow the Guzman, Moore, Rada etc types a chance to develop while on the MLB roster (i.e. let the kids play). No small ball.

I do expect them to build out through trades and sprinkled in with key top FAs. Prospects are assets, like draft picks in football. Deal them where it will net top tier level talent.

Depends, if MLB gets what they want in the CBA, I believe that the cap would be a hard cap. The NFL cap is a hard “don’t go over” cap. Period. No we’ll spend and pay the tax. $245m the limit.

Yes, of course. if the penalties are cranked up, then no. You would not move forward. Currently, it has not that been a big deterrence.

I could understand the “wait, multi year timeline, etc” if the ALWest was won with 90+ wins this year, but it took 81 wins.

Go for it in 2027- completely.

Division is up for grabs. As it stands today, a few tweaks built on top of the Angels starting pitching, would put the Angels above Houston and Texas. Seattle has Dipoto, they are not to be feared until he goes. A’s…are up and coming but their organization is in flux but they could be a force in the later part of the decade.

KSE can still move his slow grinding approach and build out the organization but they need to spend in 2027 to get new players while keeping the prospects develop on the farm and not MLB. They have all the time in the world to outfit the Tempe complex with a tiki bar.

I’m ok with adding pieces incrementally if they are available but not for the sake of it. Suzuki and Skubal would be great adds as would a 2B if you could find one. We have replacements for Neto so I’m good with trading him for an OF or OFs, or 1B.

Agree, I don’t think it is for the sake of it. Every year we go FA shopping.

To keep not-ready prospects down on the farm and to remove the non-performers that infuriate the fans (too many names to mention), spend some solid money on above grade MLB level talent. You do it wisely, nothing too committal and improve the org at the same time. The pitching advancements in 2026 should allow us to think a little larger about the near future while planning for the long term.

I would love Skubal but we’re not going toe-to-toe with Cohen and nor should we, not about to give a long term 5-year+ contract to a pitcher on the wrong side of 30 but we should at least get in the conversation.

Would it not be more practical for Kroenke to invest heavily in building the Org, player development, scouting and the minor leagues for now as opposed to free agents?

I mean hopium aside, this team lost 100 games in the worst division in baseball. Shouldn’t the team be a bit closer before it would make sense to invest heavily in free agents?

yeah, my hope is once the sale is done Kroenke’s people start poaching the egg heads of the other smart orgs (Brewers, Rays, Dodgers). Once that is set, let them go to work on bettering every development level. While that’s going on, Kroenke’s real estate guys will be working on a new stadium plan, to be open for the 2030 season.

The 2030’s then look to be a new golden age for the Halos: intelligence running the organization with $ to spend, solid development pipeline of players, shiny new stadium. The 2031 all-star game is in Anaheim to show off the stadium, with a few young Halos players being selected for the game. Halos then consistently make the playoffs.

A man can dream.

I think this is a good dream that has a chance at reality.

At a minimum I’d like to see a young core of players play to somewhere near .500 before using free agency to fill remaining holes. To get there will require massive improvements in all levels of the Org and smart trades for young talent.

I agree except that the players suggested fill holes that we don’t have players for. If Trout and Meckler play in the OF we don’t have someone to play the other position, nor do we have a 2B including in the minors unless you want to see Moore, Paris, Peraza, or Grissom. 2B and the OF are legitimate places to add and there is no one waiting in the wings for years to come. I don’t think we need to be bad just for the heck of it. Now, if you trade Neto for a really good AA power hitting OF then could sign someone for a year or just play Paris. The guys we’re waiting for are Cozart, Nimmala, Raudi, and Munroe.

Just finished reading Jeff’s articles in the SI links above. Excellent. Very good work, sir! So what are the chances D’Arnaud is a coach for us next year? Wouldn’t break my heart to see that. Gotta agree about Suzuki being mishired for manager. Would have been a good 1B coach. After the Charlie Foxtrot we saw for most of the season regarding lineups and the bullpen I really don’t want to see him back as manager. Yes, the late season pitching turnaround was incredibly cool, but that didn’t make up for the goofy decisions he made. BTW I’m rooting for the Padres- near neighbors, shared deep-seated Dodger hatred, and I love going to Petco a couple of times a year.

It’ll be interesting to see the direction the club goes once the sale is complete (and the strike is over).

I hope they go the direction of focusing on continuing the tank while building up the supporting functions before going all in on signing FAs. Given the inevitable strike, you can probably make more progress on this direction than trying to immediately contend.

You are in charge now. The new owner comes to you and says he wants to be next year’s White Sox – go from 100 losses to making the playoffs! He does not want to wait – he wants to be the anti-Arte and do everything possible to win NOW. No budget limitations.
What would you do? I know some of you are pretty good at this stuff, so give it a shot.

The budget granted by Staff will be the most interesting thing to me.

Wasn’t last year >$250 million ? And they ended up <$200 million?

Rendon comes off, ownership transition, and a lock out. What a guess for budget! It could be anything!

20/20 hindsight for 2026: considering we had -9 WAR Zuk and it took just 81 wins for the division, if the 2026 payroll was flat and we hypothetically spent that $50 million lost very wisely and effectively and had an experienced manager like Buck, we’d still be playing baseball right now!

The figures I have seen was payroll ~$60m. Is that about right?

The payroll would depend on the CBA, I think. If MLB gets their way the floor would be $171m and cap $245m. So maybe a kind of two part IIWJM?
Spend to payroll floor then what to do with rest of the money and second part spend to cap, if that could even be done with this FA class.

I think you can both build the organization and add pieces for positions you don’t have replacements for. I agree with Fungo, I don’t believe we’re just going to wait 5 years and see what happens.

You just said “be the 2026 White Sox”. They have huge budget limitations. They also spent 4 years building up their farm and trading for kids. Now they have reaped the rewards.

So my answer is no.

OK. But I don’t believe you. If you had the budget to sign the three best pitchers, the three best hitters, and make trades – you say no? You are only limited by your lack of adventure.

Okay so you go big and add 20 WAR at a cost of $150m per season. What does that get you right now? 20 more wins and the Angels win 82 games. And still miss the playoffs.

There is nothing to spend 150M on but the club will likely have substantial payroll room for the right additions. We do not have any 1B or OFs on the cusp, the closest OF is 19 in A ball.

I’d love to get Tyrone Taylor. He’ll be a little overpriced, but that OF mix of Taylor, Meckler, Siri with Teodosio stashed and Trout hopefully marooned on DH island…. that’s a serious defensive group. Laureano would be a fine Spring Training sign and invite type who may turn out good.

I really like Suzuki but I am afraid he will cost too much. I am also afraid CtPG Guy is simple enough in his feelz to hate Suzuki cause Suzuki.

As for pitchers, I’d gamble on guys who I can then trade. So Brady Singer, sure. I don’t want to pay Peralta to be on a crap team for two years…. I don’t care if someone thinks the kidz need to see a winner naked in the shower in order to develop or what ever excuse they want to dress up their demand that ownership buy them a name they’ve heard. we should sign some guys who can give veteran innings and then get traded for prospects.

Tarik Skubal. Really? Perry is the stupid one around here? We shouldn’t buy a crown jewel if we don’t have a safe place to keep it. 40+ million dollars to pitch on next years Angels team? Nope.

I don’t think rebuild teams should pay any real money for relievers. We have plenty of prospect arms and Ben Joyces and Carlos Espinosas and Leonard Garcias and Najer Victors to go through. Sign some dumpster dive arms to see if they work out so we can trade them if they do. That’s about it.

Also trade Detmers and Neto.

Singer feels like Lorenzen v2.0 to me. Will shine on every 3rd or 4th outing only to give up lots of deep shots and get crushed on other starts. Yeah, I’m not a fan of any of the three Peralta’s. A gamble to me would be a guy like Woodruff or Burnes if he opts out. Immense potential with a true swing and miss repertoire or go to Tyler Mahle as a soft 5th starter.

Aligned on the reliever comments.

Great work on the links today you were busy. I like the OF and pitching suggestions. Signing Skubal if possible Suzuki, a 2B, and rebuilding the pen could change the team dramatically and wouldn’t block anyone.

We have the budget even without having a high payroll and we would have Cozart, Munroe, Raudi, and Nimmala on the way with the option to trade Neto for OFs at some point if desired. This is when I lose my conservative realism and start getting light headed with hopium. Adding the right OF Bat, SP, 2B, and closer would be phenomenal and make us competitive in our division overnight.
