Historically, Reid Detmers doesn’t give up a lot of hits to the Tigers. When he does, there’s a good chance it is a homer. How did he do today?
Inning 1: Detmers gave up a single but no runs. Then Neto single, Schanuel walk, Jorge Soler walk and a Josh Lowe groundout made it Angels 1-0.
That was the only scoring. We got Kirby Yates again in the top of the ninth inning. He hit Dillon Dingler with a pitch. Spencer Torkelson flied out to left. Pinch runner James Outman stole second base while Riley Greene was in the process of drawing a walk. A Kerry Carpenter fly out made the game look promising but Hao-Yu Lee doubled to make it 2-1 Tigers. Samy Natera Jr. came in to pitch for Yates. A Jake Rogers fly out brought the Angels up for their last chance.
Jorge Soler was hit by a pitch. Wade Meckler came in to pinch run. Jose Siri singled to drive Meckler to second. Jo Adell popped out. Oswald Peraza grounded out to third for the second out. Denzer Guzman grounded out to first to end the game. Angels lose 2-1.
Meckler is sitting again because it’s vitally important that we start Soler, our .209 hitting DH.
Is it too soon to find someone just like McIlvaine to replace him and promote McIlvaine to GM? Maybe he would have the guts to tell Kurt to bench Soler and Lowe or else.
It is interesting how teams enter the deadline as buyers/sellers. The buyers typically are looking to improve 1-2 positions. Sellers are looking to improve next year + teams. The Angels are going nowhere so get as many good low prospects as possible. (That is code for “Time to Rebuild”)

I didn’t mind that we lost. My eyes popped a little when I saw Detroit won with two in the 9th. Went to the box score. Detmers, fine. Yates….what’s there to say? Sadly I thought if the Angels were going to lose, this was the best way. Romano still leads the team in saves. We’ve played 98 and our team leader has 4. I mean, I know you’re all aware of it, it’s just “shaking my head” at that fact.
Meanwhile I see that Silseth leads the majors in inherited runs scored. I didn’t realize that it was so many (40)

I know it’s fun to contemplate getting the first pick in the draft, but Suzuki’s misuse of the roster, continued poor line up construction, terrible bull pen management, and not even playing your best players is so frustrating I can barely watch anymore. What’s the point. I realize it won’t make any difference in the season but keeping Kurt Suzuki is a huge mistake in my opinion. It makes the team almost unwatchable. It’s not the losing, it’s the bad baseball and field management.
If they enter the next season with basically the same roster then they’ll just be mailing it in for another year.
Dude – it’s highly unlikely there will be any baseball in ‘27. At a minimum it’s likely to be a greatly shortened season. A lockout is coming.

Lowe has an OBP this season of .249 in 188 at bats. He has nine walks vs 51 k’s. That sports fans in your Angels regular left fielder.
Playing Lowe over Meckler and not leading Meckler off is just one example of why Suzuki should be fired.

It’s so frustrating. After 3.5 months with the worst record in baseball, what have you possibly got to lose by trying something different. It may or may not work, but do it now when it doesn’t matter. You have an opportunity to learn at no cost.
Especially now that it’s July, 2/3 of the way through the season essentially. Also Perry is gone, so Moz having him on the roster just feels and in the lineup feels more and more like it’s also his decision to trade for him. Admit he sucks, he always just flails away, who watches him actually play and thinks wow that’s a good baseball player. I mean he looks like a baseball player from an athletic view, but man his swing is trash, his swing decisions are even worse. Plus Meckler is 2nd on the team in OBP behind Trout. Like this should be the easiest decision on earth.
Agree. I’m getting a lot more frustrated, too. While the draft was a positive that feeling gets dragged down by these lineups containing players who have no future.
It is time for direct questions towards M&M. And time to say what the 100 day plan is(though I get why they wouldn’t, competition and all)

Y’all called it. I was wrong – Grindlinger signed right at slot. The more I’ve looked into him – the more I like him and this pick. Chance for huge upside. I wonder if this will mostly be everyone getting slot – as in – let’s not play games, pay the man the value of the pick and get the best guy out there. I still expect there will be some under for a pick or two – but it could have been – let’s play this pretty straight up. I do wonder how Trout feels that they went with someone who probably won’t be ready until he’s about retired.

I forget who it was but some aging reliever on the Angels said to the press he wasn’t a 8th or 9th inning guy anymore, as soon as he said that Scioscia had him pitching late in games back to back games.
I’ve been an Angels fan for about 13 years now I think and I can barely remember this team ever having a real closer.
Huston Street had a decent year with 40 saves but was nowhere close to being elite. His FIP was almost 4 that season. Estevez was good in stretches. Otherwise it’s a weird mix of guys like Bedrosian, Middleton, Robles, etc.
Iglesias probably the only true lockdown guy we’ve had and it was only one full season

His season was weird. 3.98 FIP but all of his bad performances were pretty much in non save situations. He was really good when it mattered.
Think about what last year’s team would have been without Jansen. Actually you don’t need to think about it because it’s happening before your eyes this season.
Can you imagine Suzuki trying to figure out how to use Jansen? The marbles would fall out Kurt’s ears.

Logan ohoppe and his -0.4 war. The angels better figure out the catcher position asap
Hoppy has regressed in every season he’s been here, while Marsh has blossomed into an All-Star.
If there’s trade wasn’t made, Hoppy would be an All-Star in Philly while Marsh would be getting hate.
Fixing the catching is important, but in reality is just another hole on what is a Swiss cheese roster.

Fixing the catching issue can help the pitchers, defense, and improve the line up. I believe the angels would be fine with ohoppe as a catcher if his strong offense balanced it out, but he hasn’t hit well in 2 years and his defense is getting worse.
Yates now has equal amount of blown saves than actual saves (3).
Neto is an absolute clown. Probably losing the respect of his teammates on a daily basis with his idiocy. A good manager would save him from himself and either bench him or move him down in the order, but unfortunately, we do not have 1.

I think that is a mistake.
It’s the metric that evaluates player value by comparison to replacement level players. It’s the primary metric to determine the MVP. So – yes I think WAR is highly relevant.
I also think Neto needs to go. You’ll see him blossom elsewhere just like Marsh. This Org is a cesspool that destroys good baseball players.
I know what WAR is. But it is far from a perfect system of measuring a player. Allowing for zero subjective assessment does have its’ flaws, and I think Neto is a perfect example. I have watched him this whole season so I can SEE how ;his mistakes in judgement, lackadaisical effort, recklessness etc negatively impact the team…
WAR is imperfect for a variety of reasons, not least of which is that it does not account for contextual factors such as WHEN an error occurs, but rather is taking raw data from game logs etc… Whereas a subjective analysis can see how impactful an error or player decision was in a specific context (this is more on an issue on certain defensive plays I think )….. So NO , using WAR as a blanket defense of Neto is not effective in my view. In the end these metrics based on large data sets need to be BLENDED or incorporated into a personal subjective analsyis of the impact a player has on a game by game or day by day basis.
While the subjective element is also problematic itself, pretty much any form of measurement in a multi-faceted, dynamic system with many participants or active elements is going to be imperfect. Let’s just not pretend that WAR tells the whole story. It doesn’t.
Like all metrics, WAR has its flaws which you aptly point out. What it does do is provide an overview comparison among all players. So, objectively, a 4 WAR player has had a better season than a 2 WAR player. You’d have to watch every player in the league closely to determine when they made errors, their subjective attitude and the impact on games. Since that is impossible, WAR is about as good as we are going to get comparing one player to another in terms of value. That said, it is definitely not perfect.
I don’t know that I’ve seen a lot of “lackadaisical effort” from Neto. Gonna have to disagree with you on that one Frosty. The dude plays hard, always.
Absolutely fair to say he’s reckless and makes poor decisions, but I don’t think there’s an issue with effort level.
If anything it feels like he’s pressing because he thinks he needs to be Superman out there. He’s trying too hard at times, IMO.
Not running hard to First base surely counts as lackadaisical, sometimes in going after (or NOT going after ) pop ups and fly balls – one of which cost us a huge game in New York in April, sometimes losing mental focus at the plate by swinging at pitches WAAAY out of the zone — that too is due to lack of focus, in other words being “lackadaisical”; or even getting picked off of First by a pitcher or catcher, which has happened several times, or being selfish and playing “hero ball” by trying to steal Second after a wild pitcher walked him and Trout is coming up ; not the time to go for a steal…. Being lazy and making bad throws to 1st which result in an error and a big inning for the opponent, or being “lackadaisical” in bobbling a routine grounder that results in error….

I mean, the guy is just so sloppy and unpolished…. The fact that he’s a very good fastball hitter doesn’t begin to make up for all this shit, or his boneheaded moves like for god knows why killing early game momentum and huge scoring chance by trying to bunt with the bases loaded…
I say get a haul of young pitching and one solid MLB outfielder for the guy…I don’t know if the character stuff and basic lack of intelligence can be fixed …
I can’t say I’ve watched every game but I don’t remember ever seeing him jog to first on any sort of competitive ball in play.
To me most of what you are describing sounds more like a lack of focus than laziness. I think these are legitimate examples of why his play has been so bad this year, so not arguing with your account. I just interpret the reason why differently I guess, or maybe I misunderstood your meaning when you said lackadaisical effort.
The effort comes and goes with him ; it is not consistent. And for the kind of money I am sure he’s looking for that just won’t cut it…. and we might add that leading the league in strikeouts and errors is not a good look…. I think the high number of K’s is definitely related to a lack of focus … If I was in a sympathetic mood (which I am not with him) I might blame some of this on Suzuki for literally never resting him the first three months…
I’m not on team get rid of Neto or trade Neto, that would be stupid. I also acknowledge that a lack of leadership from top down plays a part in this. I don’t know who the leader is right now…that’s a problem.

Neto is a classic “100 dollar talent with a 5 cent head” type of player. He needs to mature to transform potential to results.
There’s no one on this team that should be considered “off limits” in a trade. I do agree that the team shouldn’t “give him away” in a trade, but if there’s an offer out there that improves the team – Moz has to take it.
I think he needs to be traded as he is the player with (likely) the highest trade value on the team. He needs a change of scenery. I predict he will blossom elsewhere.

His best year was 2.7 WAR. He hit that year (1995) and in 1998 he was legitimately good. Other than that he was a guy that should have been a bench player. Offense was so good back then and he just couldn’t hit a lick.
