LA Angels Thursday News Crash: More DFA

Joey Lucchesi got DFAd again. It’s probably getting monotonous. The Angels brought up Mitch Farris to take his place. Farris was pretty good in yesterday’s loss when he came in to replace the injured Yusei Kikuchi. Kikuchi left the game with shoulder tightness.

Disaster Perry. A parody.

Around Baseball

The Tigers hired Kyle Hendricks as a Special Assistant.

Garrett Crochet is on the injured list. They are hoping his left shoulder inflammation will knit correctly. The Orioles placed Trevor Rogers on the 15 day IL with an undisclosed illness. Casey Mize and Javier Baez both went on the Tigers IL. For Mize it is a right adductor strain and for Baez it is a sprained right ankle.

The White Sox selected the contract of Jarred Kelenic. The Braves designated 39 year old Carlos Carrasco for assignment. The Giants selected right handed reliever Gregory Santos. The Yankees designated Randall Grichuk for assignment. The Brewers just selected Brian Fitzpatrick. The Pirates designated right-hander Ryan Harbin for assignment. They selected veteran Chris Devensky. The Blue Jays DFAd Eloy Jimenez.

Fangraphs gave us an article about the Astros sucking.

Here is a fantasy ranking of all the starting pitchers.

And other fan bases are saying the same thing about Peraza, Grissom, and Frazier. Every team has some they let get away. Or kicked to the curb.
Except the Dodgers. They are perfect in every way.

Ward is behaving differently this season. He is No.1 in OPS against all other LFs in the game, Marsh No.5. It’s early but Ward has changed up his batting approach and it just might stick. He seems focused and intent at putting the ball in play.

I fully expect Moniak and Marsh to falter as the year goes on, contact woes loom.

OK. I was a bit depressed yesterday after the road trip. I feel better today. Let’s work our way back to .500 – it may take 6 weeks or so. Then go from there. Play better than .500 ball after the All-Star game playing the kids. Finally we will see some light! 😀

That’s a good call. They do have a top farm. Unlikely to pick-off Jesus Made but maybe a mix of Andrew Fischer, Bishop Letson, Braylen Payne or Quero gets it done. Get an influx of positional players and try and snag a young pitcher in Letson. Brewers would be smart to pair a top arm with Misiorowski to go along with Harrison, Patrick and Sproat. Soriano and The Miz pitching the first two games of a playoff spells trouble for the opposition. Hopefully Woodruff will come back and make this a top 3-4 rotation in the game.

First thing I checked after the Woodruff injury was farm rankings and Milwaukee has a consensus top 3 farm.

As a small market they would get 2.5 years of control on Soriano. It’s a perfect fit for both sides

I’m decidedly opposed to trading away Soriano (assuming we’re re-signing him of course), BUUUUT, if we did, the asking price must be at least one proven position player + top pitching prospect(s).

Pineapple12

I don’t want to trade Sori either, but it is the biggest question facing the front office, or at least it should be.

This team objectively sucks. After this year Soriano has 2 years left of control. Are we contending in that window? Under Arte’s ownership logic would tell us we won’t be.

Are we comfortable giving a 30-year old Soriano $35 million a year over 7 years? That’s assuming he’ll want to re-sign with this franchise too! Oh ya, he’s also had TJS 2x already.

Cashing out on Sori having a potentially generational season to help fill our barren farm makes a lot of sense to me. This is the baseball heavens giving us a golden opportunity to make good on our error for not trading Shohei.

Made is ranked higher than JJ Wetherholt. He’s the number 3 prospect in baseball behind Konnor Griffin and Kevin McGonnigle. I want a top prospect with lots of control. This has us winning the trade by a big gap. I get the hesitancy on Jett Williams – but I still think he’s going to be special and he’s versatile. Biased opinion. Watched him play in HS and he reminded of Dykstra in how he played the game. So much so, I said I wouldn’t doubt it if he moved to centerfield. What an engine. Was on the field as a freshman with four other guys that were drafted and high prospects and he was still the best guy on the field. I’ve come to the conclusion Arte is done spending. We are so bad – might as well tank. We don’t have but Bremner in the top 100 and he’s ranked 71. The cupboards are bare.

Reply to  Pineapple12

You make incredibly valid points. If we knew for certainty now that Arte isn’t going to pony up (or if Soriano wants to bounce), of course we should trade him. Trade him NOW in fact as his value with 2 years of control is at its peak. This is sort of another Shohei Ohtani situation, isn’t it?

That being said, any team that aspires to be good, needs good players and Soriano is showing us that he’s a great player – an ACE pitcher. Generally speaking, you don’t let great players go. Particularly ACES.

HalosFanForLife

Reply to  BannedInLA

But here’s the thing. Skubal just rewrote the arb game. His number has these guys not fearful of going to arb which will make them in no rush to sign. So if Arte does sign him, he likely overpays. And the circle begins again. How can you not love Soriano? Do I want him gone? Heck no. I want a new owner. This guy has run his course. And because of that – get value when it’s probably near it’s peak. He’s up nearly 20 points in trade value – so it’s already adjusted. Truthfully – I’d be trying for Made/Soriano straight up. And I’d jump on it.

Eric_in_Portland

that looks really bad. Williams has looked pretty bad at AAA. They’re both middle infielders, right? I sure wouldn’t do that for Sori, let alone for the combo

Pineapple12

Yea, I’m chilling on a light-hitting 5’7 infielder.

OTOH, Trout and friends have been rocking the “Jesus Won” apparel this season. Maybe that’s a sign we are trading in Soriano for Jesus

Way too light for just Soriano without Reid Detmers. Soriano is a pitcher who has become an ace, that means throw away the equal ratings, WAR ratings. There are about 4 or 5of these type pitchers in the league, not on The Dodgers. A rare commodity that can be leveraged. Especially since he is affordable.

From Jeff Passan at ESPN:
“The three worst teams in baseball (Mets, Phillies, Astros) carry top 12 payrolls — with two of them in the top five. In aggregate, the record of the top 12 is 185-179, which means the average of the dozen biggest payrolls in baseball is … an 82-win team.”

Arte can bring us the same result for a lot less money.

We are essentially tied with the Phillies and a half a game ahead of the Astros. We will be well behind them by the end of the season. Not sure what’s happening with the Mets who we’re just couple of games ahead of. Those 3 teams are the only ones with a worse record than us.

Even if the Angels were willing to hire a new outside manager for the rest of the season, nobody wants to manage a failing team for a partial year when there is no prospect of a long-term contract given the certitude of a GM turnover at the end of the season. That means if Suzuki gets fired, the Angels are going to end up with bench coach John Gibbons as the acting manager for the rest of the season.

Gibbons was brought in specifically to mentor Suzuki. Do you really think the reason Suzuki sucks is because he’s been ignoring Gibbons’ advice?

I really think there is something in MLB’s investigation that is preventing his return.

Just in looking at how the SD case was resolved, the way Bauer was suspended longer than anybody, and the fact that no MLB team will come near him.

There’s something bad in there and the Angels don’t want to be his employer when a competitor leaks it to the media.

Here’s an interesting fact. Dallas McPherson’s career slash line is superior to Jo Adell’s and his career OPS+ is slightly better. He also accumulated more career WAR. He is a virtual equal of Jo Adell as a hitter. There is time for that to change but so far that’s where it’s at.

My opinion is that I believe he is, but that’s not based on our pitching. Bud Black was the benefactor of having some great arms. Bud would not look very good with our current talent. I think they are both good pitching coaches but nothing makes up for a lack of talent.
