LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Hamate Apocalypse

Happy Abe Lincoln’s birthday! Here is the annual “We’re really excited about our young core.” article. PECOTA is not quite that bullish, but it is not as negative as some of our local grumbling would have us think. The Angels will have to fight for it if they want to be the worst team in MLB.

Miguel Andujar got a one year deal with the Padres. He has already passed his physical. The Rangers signed Jordan Montgomery on a one year deal. The Dodgers re-signed reliever Evan Phillips to a one year deal. The Nationals signed Miles Mikolas to a one year deal. The Brewers will sign Gary Sanchez.

The Blue Jays signed first baseman/outfielder Juan Yepez on a minor league deal.

Zack Wheeler keeps his surgically removed rib in his closet. OK. I wonder if he will get into scrimshaw.

Broken Hamate Bones

Corbin Carroll got one taking live batting practice. He will miss the World Baseball classic. Jackson Holliday got one hitting in the cage. They are calling Francisco Lindor’s hamate injury a stress reaction and still deciding whether he will require surgery. Never mind! He will have the surgery says MLB in this explanation of the hamate apocalypse.

LMFAO. This might be the greatest line ever uttered in MLB.

Dude was in straight up, IDGAF mode.

BTW, .250 with 17 homers and 72 RBI’s would instantly make him one of our best players though I expect him to latch on with a contender to be their 4th OF.

The Angels’ batters led the majors in strikeouts in 2025, so reducing that number is one of the jobs for new hitting coach Brady Anderson. Suzuki said Anderson is already “putting some things together” with regard to an improved approach for the hitters.

“It’s a mindset,” Suzuki said. “When we played, when Brady played and when I played, there was a mindset of not striking out, battling. Taking what the pitcher gives you. These guys are a hundred times more talented than I was. The stuff they do on the field is special. I think Brady’s working with them mentality wise and having the right mentality to go up there and work on those things.”

Breaking news of Muncy signing 1yr extension for hometown discount of 10mil. Real story should be ‘ ‘Dodgers turn to plan B after Ramirez signs to stay with Cleveland’. Anyone who follows MLB knows that organization was going to poach him in free agency next year. Add the best 3rd baseman by out bidding everyone else.

We are constantly hearing about how GREAT the Dodger farm system is. Loaded with all the best prospects…yet we never seem to see these phenoms. They poach other teams’ best players, pay them the most money, and still claim their farm is the best in baseball. What a bunch of crap.

Friedman > “The Minion”

The Dodger farm serves a purpose: when some of these top rated prospects are traded, they fetch a nice return.

Our top rated prospects get traded and prosper, while we “enjoy” the wit, wisdom and results of studs like Lucas Giolito.

Yeah? So who are these Dodger gems that have been traded? Gavin Lux? Dustin May? Over rated prospects that other GM’s trade for because they hear how great the Dodger prospects are. And who tells them this? They same people who rate the Angel farm as one of the worst. The point is – no one knows how they will turn out and who will make it and who won’t. Dodger hype has reached a new nauseating level.

I’ve been screaming at the top of my online lungs that the Dodgers have the most overrated farm system in MLB. A lot worse than the Astros, Cubs, Mariners, and Tigers who have way out developed the Dodgers since the 2020 pandemic season.

Interesting read from Passan

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47620464/mlb-2026-kyle-tucker-los-angeles-dodgers-free-agency-labor-cba-offseason

Alabama released their profits or lack thereof recently for ‘24-‘25. I found that interesting as well:

Passan notes the fact that the owners unanimously approved the current CBA…which the majority apparently now loathe. It’ll be interesting to see if the owners can stay united, or if they cave on a salary cap.

The owners are historically their own worst enemy.

Manfred talked about a cap and floor. I think those are the right words to start but can the owners figure out the mechanics and $ numbers to a cap, floor, revenue sharing and penalties against teams that don’t hit the numbers, a la other sports, during this calendar year. All without full knowledge of their revenue stream from whatever MLB gets or proposes for streaming in a couple years.

If MLB proposes just a cap that will be summarily rejected. Then I think the owners cave. If MLB wants to really divide MLBPA they would offer a realistic proposal of cap/floor, etc. If that happened I think MLBPA would have a stroke. MLBPA has never had to deal with reason before. I don’t think they would know what to do.

Just like the real world, the solution that works best for the middle majority will face stiff opposition from the two extremes.

Getting guys like Nutting to agree to a floor will be as difficult or more than getting the Dodgers and Yankees to send even more revenue sharing money to the bottom feeders.

What I’d love to see would be a meeting between MLB owners and NFL owners on how a functioning league works.

PECOTA always makes me laugh because it’s basically a robot that acts exactly like a fairly well read baseball fanguy. At the end of 2024, for example, if it were just SomeDudeTech it would’ve been saying something like “Man, I was right about the Doyers, Braves, Phillies and Astros being stacked. I knew the Orioles looked like they were ready to compete too and the Mets would make it if they were healthy. I keep expecting the Brewers and Guardians to fall apart and they never do. Those Royals and Tigers. Who saw that coming!?! Wowzers!”

Like most of us, it just can’t fathom baseball players working hard and getting better at baseball. It also really like teams with lots of players whose names it knows and doesn’t expect injuries or regression.

PECOTA is Bobby at the bar talkin about how the Doyers have bought another championship in Feb. But if some pitchers I can’t even name explode along with JJ Wetherholt, Jordan Walker and Joshua Baez for the Cardinals this year neither Bobby nor PECOTA can see it coming.

This team was always going to be bad, but avoiding the temptation of signing of few big ticket guys should be considered a win IMO.

It’s all about the young core making marked improvements and if they do, it makes targeted FA spending in 27’ or 28’ that much easier. Or at least in theory.

This is last place team on paper, but, I’ll be satisfied if players like Schannuel, Moore, Rodriguez, Detmers, Rada, etc establish themselves as solid starters – regardless of the final W-L record.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I know. I keep seeing a lot of “smart” baseball writers” kind of giving the Angels dead off season a sneering back hand. I’m like “You’re so fking smart, you can’t see that the team clearly isn’t gonna compete and is looking at kids and trying to build up trade bait? You actually think it would have been a better idea to pump an extra 50M into THIS roster? Why do you have your job?”

This off season is twenty shades of meh. But flopping around signing guys to make this current roster look a little better for two or three years is just stupid. We’ve bitched about those types of moves for years. Well, here’s an off season where we didn’t do that. It’s actually progress in my book.

I’d say that Neto has established himself to be an above average starter with All-Star potential. Some would argue that Schanny has already proven himself to be a “solid starter” given his OBP, OK batting average and solid K/BB rate. As for the others, much room for improvement.

Getting his first pro reps at the Angels’ prospect minicamp in January, Bremner threw in front of Angels brass, which included new manager Kurt Suzuki and new pitching coach Mike Maddux.

“Tyler has put himself in a really good spot with the work that he’s done over the winter,” Angels assistant GM Joey Prebynski said. “The big thing for Tyler is to come into camp and continue building off the work that he’s put in and just try to come in and continue to learn as much as he can.”

Despite the Angels’ tendency to promote prospect aggressively, Bremner isn’t guaranteed a spot on the Opening Day pitching staff. But once he arrives, he will provide needed strike-throwing that the Angels’ rotation struggled with in 2025. They finished last in MLB with a 9.6% walk rate.

“He’s elite at getting ahead with all three pitches,” Prebynski said. “He was 65% on first-pitch strikes last year. He had a 6% walk rate, and for us it’s just continued development of the repertoire and pitch usage and how he continues to sequence pitches.”

“He has elite stuff and he shows feel for pitching and utilizing (his three pitch-arsenal). He can get outs to multiple quadrants of the zone, so we’re excited to see him come to spring training and come in here and pitch.”

I agree – but also don’t delay him because that’s what you’re supposed to do. When he’s ready – give him his shot.

My son is supposed to play on Friday a potential top 10 pick next draft out of HS that is hitting 100 MPH and 103 in bullpens. I asked a buddy of mine – former 10 year MLB guy – whose son just faced him (possible 1st rounder too) if he saw any tips or tendencies.

He said. “Nothing to tell. He’s a big leaguer. Nothing to hit. Hope for a walk. Throws 100 and excellent breaking stuff. Hit the next arm that comes in.” The kid struck out 10 in 3 innings. (Two dropped third strikes reached base).

I don’t know what constitutes “too soon”? If the player is performing well or is at least league average, why not let him compete? Does “too soon” mean stamina in relation to workload?

Assuming that it’s primarily performance driven, I would be happy to see him pitch meaningful innings this year.

Keep in mind the Angels play in a much tougher division than the White Sox. On paper, I think we could argue which team is worse but when we’re getting smoked by the Mariners and Astros the Sox will be splitting series with KC and the Twins.

It’s not the “take a wrecking ball to the roster” approach many want, but I interpret Perry’s quote as a clear admission we are in a rebuild.

But general manager Perry Minasian, speaking on Wednesday with pitchers and catchers holding their first official workouts of the spring, said he believes in his current group and that he thinks it’s important to continue to develop the club’s youthful core.

“One of the things we wanted to commit to was our young players,” Minasian said. “It’s something I’ve talked about the last couple of years. So making that commitment with some of our internal guys, we wanted to give them some opportunities.”.

You had it right earlier. This is a teardown/rebuild team. Play some kids. Play some restoration players. Hope for trade bait. Maybe even trade some young players. Try not to have a silly draft. Horrible team gets a top pick in next years draft.

They don’t have to come out and say it. They just have to go out and do it. All this “DYE DOH TINK PERREH HASTH A PLAN” bullshit is only valid if they suddenly start signing guys. It’s more likely they will look at HOW BAD things are system wide and then decide if they need to trade Nolan, Neto, Soriano, Detmers, Adell…. depending on if they suck or get hurt. Guys like Manoah will be gone in July if their ERA is under 4.00. That’s a plan. It just sucks. I wish we had done this in 2022.

Eric_in_Portland

you (and others) have mentioned trading at the deadline. The idea is maybe some vets we’ve signed, like Manoah, or maybe Jo, will get us good prospects but if we look at Perry’s history he just hasn’t done that. We probably could have gotten more for Ward last July/August but instead we traded minor leaguers for Chafin, Garcia, and Peraza. No prospects in sight. It’s nice to talk about the idea of scoring big on trades but that’s not Perry’s MO.

I feel that Perry is a good soldier but not a very good creator. He is not actively blaming his boss or his boss’s cronies. In public anyway.

If he was in an org that was decent or good like Twins, A’s, M’s, Blue Jays, Rays, Dodgers, etc. (and yes, you can argue I didn’t list best orgs) would he do as well as those GMs have. I suspect not but we will never know.

We’re in a hole so deep that we decided not to spend money on players because everyone’s gonna need more money for booze. I’m just glad our owner finally stopped making me sign shiny trash to add to the pile so we can maybe start rebuilding.”

Perry is the mother of the guy who just shot five bystanders and one gangster in a drive by crying out “He a good boy!” and holding up his school photo from freshman year before he dropped out. He loves these players cause he has to.
