We’re going to spray to all fields today and see if a theme develops. This past week the Angels lost a series to the Dodgers then won a series against Houston. Going 3 and 3 this week isn’t bad for this squad.
It should have been 4 and 2 but Kirby Yates was put in to close on Monday night and the defense was absolutely atrocious. Yes, the 9th inning keeps deciding Angels games.
If the author on that link looks familiar, yes, I have Logan helping me out a bit now. Great kid.
And an established writer is helping me now too. He found the Angels bullpen is closing in on a record for futility.
As we all know, the Angels bullpen sucks because Perry Minasian has not built a solid bullpen. Over five dozen arms drafted including an all pitcher draft yet he is constantly signing cheap free agents in hopes of patching together the unit.
Considering his failure to scout and develop amateur talent, Perry Minasian is not the man to lead a rebuild. After all, the rebuild would not be needed if Perry had done a better job in drafting and previous trades.
In fact, Perry missed on drafting 4 of the current Top 10 prospects when he had the chance to do so.
But not all is doom and gloom. The Angels did win a home series against Houston and provide us with one heartfelt moment on the field. Trey Mancini returned to Major League Baseball.
I fully agree with TBW here. Trey is my favorite interview of all time and I will interview him again this week. I will also interview Wade Meckler this week.
Yes, having access is super cool but no, I’m not going to sell my soul for it. However, many of the Angels community events take place this time of year and I will highlight guys like Reid Detmers and Wade Meckler when they coach a kid’s baseball clinic.
That took place to coincide with Play Ball Weekend and the end of Little League. The Angels scholarship program is something I covered here in the past and they awarded new ones this week. And then I wrote the piece about Perry sucking the following day.
Plus it isn’t all me any more. There are plenty of negative stories to go around and I honestly enjoy covering the charity stuff and prospects.
One hole is open in the rotation now that Jack Kochanowicz is having Tommy John surgery.
Mike Trout is a class guy. This week he reached out to Mookie Betts and offer some kind words now that Betts is hitting below the Mendoza line.
Betts seems like a nice guy as well. If he was a jerk he’d say something like “I’ll just have to look at my rings,” or something. It would be great to get Trout a ring, but we have Arte.
One fan went so far as to hire a plane to fly over Dodgers Stadium and implore Arte to sell.
From around baseball:
Yes, I like the Giants, and yes they also suck. But how about a walk off grand slam by Bryce Eldridge on a perfect Wednesday afternoon? I have to say a day game by the Bay is one of my favorite baseball experiences.
The Christian Moore draft year featured several players I liked a lot. One was Braden Montgomery. He had a walk off in his MLB debut.
Super stud Tarik Skubal will return to the mound this weekend for Detroit. At this point I’m not sure if he’s ramping up for the trade deadline as much as free agency.
Scary moment that thankfully turned out fine. Seth Lugo took a comebacker to the dome but was able to get back up.
Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. My son is finally out of school for the summer and I’m sure our schedules will be all messed up soon. The Angels are at home on Sunday, so perhaps I’ll hit that game.
