LA Angels Thursday News Crash

Earlier I linked a Fangraphs article about Reid Detmers being a top ten starter. Here is an article Brent Maguire wrote for MLB.com touting Detmers as an attractive trade alternative for teams who miss on Tarik Skubal. It’s a hamate fracture for Sebastien Rivero and the Angels called up Logan Porter. Nolan Schanuel is also injured, thanks to being hit by a pitch. He is day to day.

The Blue Jays designated right-hander Connor Seabold for assignment. The Dodgers released injured infielder/outfielder Tyler Fitzgerald. The Giants DFAd outfielder Will Brennan. The Astros will acquire Raynel Delgado from the Rays for cash considerations.

Injured List

Ronald Acuna Jr. is back on the ten day IL with a left hamstring strain.

Oneil Cruz is on the 10 day IL with a fracture of a couple bones in his laft hand.

The Mariners placed Matt Brash on the 15 day injured list with a lat strain.

Phillies outfielder Johan Rojas will have elbow surgery.

I didn’t realize until now what a mid year Kyle Tucker is having. That warms my loins.

There still is a ways to go prior the trade deadline and mant things can happen starting with.

The team sells
Arte retires from GM duties.
Minasian released
Minasian and Suzuki released.
Trout requests a trade.
Meckler flames out.
Starting pitching improves.
Bullpen improves.
O’Hoppe turns into Johnny Bench in either hitting or defense or both.
Schanuel turns into Wally Joiner.
Minasian destroys roster, his office, Arte’s office on his way out.
Minasian destroys draft and trading deadline by staying.
Good Gawd Miss Molly……
Yikes stripes. 🙃 🙄

Some of those things aren’t even possible and the rest are highly unlikely. You must have a whole tank of hopium. Did you purchase it from someone here? Arte will likely say when the time comes that he heard the fans so he’s firing or not retaining Perry and Kurt. I’d actually like to see Arte let Molly do what she wants. I have no idea she even knows what to do. It would be cool if sometime Jeff was able to have an off the record conversation with her about what she thinks of the current mess and what she thinks should be done.

Went to the Jays/Phillies game last night. Amazing fans. Roughly a quarter of them were in jerseys and people were singing along with the walkup songs. Wednesday game and Rogers Centre was about 75% full. Amazing to see what a well-run team can do. Max Scherzer got his 3500th K and then stank on ice. Oh well.

I am such a glutton for punishment that I am actually bummed that that I don’t get to be tortured by the Halos tonight.

However, I do get another Stanley Cup Final game. Woo hoo!

I want to rebuild but I don’t want Minasian to do it.

I think everyone agrees with the second part of your sentence, but some of the players may be worth more while he’s still here than over the winter when he is theoretically gone.

Plus if there is a lockout there may not be many trades.

Good point. We want to trade with people while they are trying to win and this year there may be more of those than normal when looking at the standings. In the AL there are currently 8 teams within 5.5 games of the post season and in the NL there are 6 teams within 3 games and another team that is within 6, which is nothing at this point in time.

How did you read my article that is scheduled for noon today?

This is a real concern.

That’s the reason I would like to see Perry fired now so his replacement can draft this year and be the trader. Still faced with your same concern though one level up. Do you trust Arte to hire the replacement.

That’s the key. I want to have faith in Molly but she is employed by Arte, so there’s the problem.

Fangraphs really likes Detmers having him tied with Skenes for 5th best amongst all SP with 2.5 WAR. Baseball Reference is a bit lower at 1.3 WAR.

The Detmers’ breakout is finally happening right before our eyes.

This is good. The issue then becomes what do the Angels do with him. The Halos are terrible as to acquiring prospects and building them up. Also, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush — and that’s if you know what to do with those in the bush which the Angels don’t.

Shouldn’t they extend Detmers rather than trade him? Unless he doesn’t want to be here, that is.

I would consider keeping Detmers and paying him when he becomes a FA, but definitely trading Soriano because he has had 2 TJs.

But what if the birds in the bush are like really big birds? Like an albatross and an ostrich.

Hilarious…and 100% true. The same could be said for Perry as well.

Kurt Suzuki, Los Angeles Angels: Does it matter?
I mean, seriously, does it? This is and has been the most dysfunctional organization in baseball, cheap and craven in equal measure, and the first-timer they hired to a one-year deal because someone had to manage this team was never going to change that. It feels almost insulting to Suzuki to judge his performance, so we simply won’t, no matter how good or bad a job he’s done.

I ordered this shirt last night. Now, I’m torn between wearing this or my “Free Ippei” shirt when I go to the game on the 24th.

Pazuzu has exceeded all of my expectations this season.

Can someone please explain to me why Peraza = Pazuzu? I missed the train on this one.

My buddy and I come up with nicknames for some players to make the game more interesting (especially the last few seasons). Pazuzu is mostly for its alliteration, but he started out the season like a demon with a bat.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Alliteration. Both start with the letter ‘P’ and both contain 6 letters.

It could just as easily be Peruzi. This fine technique is generally used when you’re not too familiar with the person, like you haven’t figured out his name, usually through inattention or laziness.

I use a variant of this when I discuss the managers of opposing teams. Instead of mangling the names I bypass them entirely and call them Dusty or Lou or Alvin Dark or whoever I can remember that once managed the team. It’s great fun!

I went with Pazuzu because that’s the demon in The Exorcist. Going for pure hyperbole here

Trading Soriano and Detmers would reshape our farm system. It won’t happen but nice to dream on.

Soriano = 2.3 WAR
Detmers = 1.3 WAR
Urena = 1.2 WAR

Aldegheri getting his shot in the rotation is the sensible move even though Dana would have been the more fun choice

If you could assure me there’d be no lockout next season and a full 162 gets played, I could be swayed into keeping Sori and Detmers.

Best rotation we’ve had in a decade, featuring multiple homegrown starters.

Part of me says that with Detmers, Soriano, and Urena, we have 3/5s of a strong rotation and we have not had a good rotations for over a decade. The key would be that the trading Detmers and Soriano would have to bring a haul and I don’t think Perry is up to that and we would end up getting fleeced.

Also Grayson. You’ll still have Grayson and Urena if you trade Detmers and Soriano. But Detmers and Soriano only have 2 years left after this and you have to ask whether or not you believe we will be competitive in the next two years without trading them. Kikuchi is also a potential trade asset if he returns and pitches well. They need to have an actual plan. What are they working towards and what are the steps to get there as opposed to just trying to do the best with what you have. I would also seriously consider trading Neto because we have 2 other SSs or move him to 2B or 3B. He’s a much better hitter when he hits down in the line up.

Clearly the bullpen need to be fixed going forward and we really need two bats to hit 3rd and 4th. they also need a catcher, a RF, and 1B.

I’m starting to believe this club can compete as soon as next year depending on the following:

— no lockout
— replace Perry and Suzuki
— acquire playable position players
— fix bullpen

We’ve seen Cleveland contend for a decade on strong pitching and fundamental baseball. I’m fully bought in on Sori, Detmers, Urena, GRod. I know everyone has missed my 🍍 hopeium, well I think our rotation can be top 5

I agree that if you keep all of the starting pitchers we would have a very good starting pitching staff. But as you said, the bullpen would require a lot of work and do we have the position players to support the pitching staff. Arte would need to spend some money on the bullpen and at least 2 middle of the order bats. Not saying it can’t happen. If we’re willing to wait a year or two, we may not need to buy as much help.

Dude it’s so hard to be negative the entire season haha, sometimes I want see the positives of this team.

Our starting pitching is legit! Maddux is simply the best at his craft and I hope we can keep him around under a new manager.

I’d still trade Soriano and Detmers 😇

Trade kikuchi and his contract for whatever best catching prospect they can acquire.
