LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: The Wild

The Phillies released Taijuan Walker into the wild. Maybe he can get a gig in Korea or something.

The White Sox DFAd right-hander Lucas Sims who cleared waivers and elected free agency. The Atlanta Braves are moving Reynaldo Lopez to the bullpen temporarily. The Mets claimed infielder Eric Wagaman off waivers from the Twins and sent him down to Triple-A. The Cardinals claimed left-hander Luis Peralta off waivers from the Rockies. They also sent him down to Triple-A.

The Yankees are calling Jasson Dominguez back up to the big leagues. This may be related to the possibility that Giancarlo Stanton will wind up on the injured list. They optioned Luis Gil to Triple A after he had a tough start against the Astros. Max Scherzer is on the 15 day IL due to tendonitis in his fight forearm and inflammation in his left ankle.

For fantasy enthusiasts, here is the April 27 edition of Roto Riteup.

Tend to agree with P12 today – not sure why they aren’t using the hot bats of Peraza and Grissom today.

Especially since they own rights to both for 4-5 years, and can only improve if either kid prospers.

The focus on inconsistent vets on one year contracts, on a team six games under .500, is bizarre.

Why is the Angels bullpen so bad? A bad owner who can not identify talent hired and inexperienced general manager who can not identify talent. That GM then drafted players lacking talent and coaches lacking the ability to improve them. Ultimately, when the GM had produced no talent, he had limited resources to spend signing talent. Considering the GM is not good at identifying talent, that plan failed.

Schanual’s OBP is sitting at .298. This is horrible and only tolerable if the player brings other ‘Plus’ attributes to the table (Power, Speed, Great Defense, etc). Nolan brings little to the table beyond a low K rate.

I don’t think it was a coincidence that veteran manager Gibbons was hired along side Suzuki.

He is the failsafe in the dugout. Might be time to execute Plan B and fire Suzuki.

Suzuki is signed to a one year deal, Perry’s contract ends after this season, and 2027 will be a lockout. The hope is Arte is gone before the 2028 season so the new owners can bring in their own people.

The white flag of surrender was flying high before the 2026 season.

Standards in Anaheim are much lower than in Boston. You still think Arte or Perry care enough to blow things up after 30 or so games?

Angels won’t fire Suzuki vs just letting the season play out. 100% certain of that. Does anyone think, given the Angels roster construction, a new manager would get the Angels to a .500 record?? Angel brass knows exactly what they have and obviously are comfortable with that.

Just to be clear, are folks quite confident that it’s not the pitcher talent level dictating game outcomes, but just the timing and sequencing of said pitcher appearances?

I mean, just as an example, the death blow in last night’s game was the three-run Pomeranz HR.

When Suzuki took Jack K out of the game, he immediately went to the only reliever in his pen who hadn’t surrendered a hit in over a week, and had two scoreless innings in KC and vs Toronto. Then he pulled Sandlin after he faced the minimum three batters and couldn’t get anyone out.

Then he went to the reliever who hadn’t surrendered a home run in over six years to a left-handed batter to face LHB Murakami. The MLB HR leader promptly crushed it and cashed all the runners in.

Now I’m not saying Suzuki is inherently a genius or a fool, but in each case there, he made the most rational decision available to him in selecting the next man up. He went to the guy on a hot streak first, then to the guy who shuts down lefties next. He did what all the data said he should.

You could say Kochanowicz should have pitched longer, but he’s pitched 88-97 pitches in each game thus far, so maybe had one or two batters left. That’s a judgment call for a field manager who badly needs his patchwork rotation to stay healthy.

But one thing is abundantly clear: these are very volatile relievers, and situational pitching isn’t improving that – it barely matters the order in which they appear.

Agreed. This roster makes it difficult for anyone to look good, and as you state, even when you make what looks to be the right move, it backfires.

I think the reaction last night is due to multiple instances of Suzuki stupidity earlier in the year. Or even week.

The dude just tried to have Bachman pitch 2 innings on Sunday and if not for a rain delay would have probably let him surrender the lead.

This was the rare instance in which Suzuki did the right thing. It just blew up in his face.

The bullpen fiasco is entirely on Perry with a big helping of Arte.

TBH, I guess I’m still a little lost as to why going to Bachman for multiple innings was “stupid”. He’s been almost perfect in those scenarios.

Bachman is a former starter who has featured in six multi-inning appearances already this season (2-3 IP typically). Five of those six were scoreless, and in one he gave up a single run.

His ERA in multi-inning appearances is sub-1…a single run in 13.1 IP, and that run was on two very weakly struck pitches in Seattle (in an Angels victory).

He’s the most successful pitcher on the team in those contexts not named Soriano.

Yeah, Bachman seems like a guy you give a reasonable leash to until he proves he can’t handle it.

To me, it’s just another case of the coaches doing a rational thing, but getting burned by circumstances out of their control (eg, rainout, bad defense, thin pen, unexpected meltdown).

Unfortunately, the low or no standards issue is a big one. Whether he likes it or not, winning draws people and people buy stuff. Think about how things were from 2002-2009. And the impact from that stretch lasted into the teens and allowed the club to lie about their desire to be competitive for years after. Now that all the credibility and good will are gone, they’ll have to win again to regenerate interest. Not a World Series necessarily, but make the post season and compete for the division.

It seems that we don’t hear much from Perry or the organization in general. Are we officially in a rebuild, or are we investing in our minor leagues and player development? Are other MLB organizations so non-communicative to the fanbase?

This team isn’t a good Manager away from anything. They are 15-20 good players, plus a complete ownership/front office make over and a functioning minor league system away from contending. If a great Manager could make the difference they would pay them hundreds of millions of dollars.

Sorry to be crusty but, my brother has worn me out complaining about this most of last week while vacationing together. This is a tire fire…pick out a good seat to watch it burn and celebrate the safe ballpark experience.

I also wouldn’t mind if Schanuel is benched in order to give Grissom more time at 1st. At this point I don’t think Nolan’s potential “prime years” are worth the hassle. He’s not very good at defense, power, or base running to make up for his “contact skills”. Too bad we don’t have any options at catcher or I would say the same thing regarding O’Hoppe.

4 straight losses to the 2 worst teams in baseball. The jury is out on this team – “just get to their bullpen and you’ll overcome a 0-10 deficit”

Whatever mirage we had during the first 20 games or so, and that Yankees series, is all gone.

Just pray and hope for one more healthy, vintage Trout season, and that’s it. Nothing and no one else on this team is worth your while.

Arte has many faults as an owner, but one that goes unmentioned is the fact that he doesn’t allow for a Bark at the Park game or two every season. My dog would love to hit up a game with me. I always contemplate taking him to Petco for one, but they seem to happen on weekdays. I did however take him to a LB Dirtbags game last season.

Dumbest manager ever. We have to be tanking because nobody is this stupid.

On Monday night, starter Jack Kochanowicz had pitched six strong innings when he took the mound in the seventh with a 5-1 lead. He induced a routine ground ball to start the inning, but shortstop Zach Neto let it go under his glove, for an error. After a bunt single, Suzuki pulled Kochanowicz at 90 pitches.

“His pitch count was getting up there and we just felt like things were kind of starting to snowball a little bit, with the error and then the bunt,” Suzuki said. “We felt like it was the right time to take him out. And it backfired, obviously. Hindsight is always 20/20, you know. We made the decision and we stuck with it and, we believe that was the right call.”

‘Really just a heartbreaking loss again. We just gotta see what we did wrong, learn from it, and move on to tomorrow.”

Wash almost died coaching this flaming hot garbage of a team and had us miraculously playing .500 ball. He wanted to come back this season and see it through.

I’m sure glad Perry decided to give the job to his buddy and co-resident of moron island, Suzuki.

The brutal unvarnished truth:

ANGELS 30 GAMES IN

2025: 12-18
2026: 12-18

I like Washington more than Suzuki as well, but just because I like his salty interviews and rough-and-ready personality.

In terms of wins and losses? Exactly the same as last year, and the Angels arguably had a slightly more balanced lineup and rotation last year.

Tis true. We were also 36-38 at the time of Wash’s medical leave, winning 10 of his last 16 games.

Things were looking up. Neto credited Wash with his development, now Neto sits at half his 2025 error total after 30 games. Causation? Correlation? Idk, but Wash demanded accountability and was building a desperately needed culture.

Let’s see where this team sits after 74 games. I’m gonna guess it’ll be worse than 36-38. Happy to be proven wrong.

I just prefer to look at apples to apples when comparing manager or player records. And to take as much contextual information into account as is available.

Until this week, the team’s strength of schedule was tougher this season. They’ve lost Ward, and they have a far weaker bullpen.

IMO the current performance is much more easily explained by roster composition than managerial decisions at this point in the season.

The projected record is now 73-89 – within a game of last year’s.

The bullpen strikes again. Isn’t Garcia at age 38 or 39 available? Isn’t there some other veteran or two than can throw a decent inning twice a week available? This is becoming the worst pen in twenty years.
