LA Angels Monday News Crash: Day to Day

Both Yoan Moncada and Ryan Zeferjahn are day to day right now. With Moncada, it’s his thumb again. For Zeferjahn, it is right hamstring tightness. Scrolling downward in that link, you can see several transactions involving Angels Pitchers including the release of Hans Crouse. Luis Rengifo had also left the home opener with hamstring tightness but he seems to be better now. Mike Trout is hitting a lot of homers lately. The Angels traded Michael Peterson to the Braves for cash. The Braves optioned him to Triple-A.

News flash! Fans like baseball teams that win baseball games.

Blake Snell went onto the 15 day IL with left shoulder inflammation. The Brewers placed Nestor Cortez on the injured list with a flexor strain. Uh Oh! Colin Holderman of the Pirates went on the 15 day IL with a right knee sprain.

The Royals acquired Nick Gordon from the Orioles for cash.

it must be Evil Arte’s fault that the Doyers are now wasting Ohtani’s best years.

Sam Hat assumes evil Arte so evil he will keep Paris out of Lineup, just because, pure evilness? Or is Perry the clueless GM controlling the clueless manager?
Or, does Arte have plans to replace The BIG A with a replica Eiffel Tower to properly honor Paris’s greatness? Read All about it! And tell me what he said, because I’m too cheap to pay to read it.

Kyren Paris became an instant fan favorite in 2025.

I spoke to the controversial swing coach that worked with Paris. And to Paris about why he needed such an extensive change.

Now the only question is: Will the Angels put him in the lineup?

Down in Mexico……let’s just say, they have more relaxed rules….Mick the Dick knows people down there.

October 6, 2021, Callaway was hired by the Acereros de Monclova to manage their winter league developmental team.In the league’s inaugural season, he led the team to a championship, defeating the Pericos de Puebla in the Serie del Príncipe. Callaway was later retained by the organization to manage their summer league club, who compete in the Mexican League (LMB), for the 2022 season. However, he was fired by the team on May 30, 2022, after they started the season with a 16–17 record. He was replaced by Matías Carrillo. In early 2023, Callaway was announced as the team’s pitching coach, but was not on the Opening Day roster and later cut ties with the organization.

Boston just acquired the Brewers competitive balance pick. Quinn Preister seems like a really light return for Milwaukee.

Doesn’t mean Boston won’t trade it again. Does perhaps give an indication of the pick’s value.

Let’s keep in mind this is essentially an early second round draft pick… like, in the upper 30s/lower 40s? The chances of it turning into a MLB regular are maybe 10-15 percent? So an MLB-ready Top 10 prospect seems like a pretty good return.

> Guardindians continue to flounder; sucked into inevitable rebuild mindset
> Paris continues to pound. Defense at 2B not half bad. Hired Mazaroski’s glove coach, rumor has it.
> Halos package Moore, Dana and Morribel for Jose Ramirez.

It could happen.

Rameriz signed through 2028 at a very reasonable $23 Million per year after this years ridiculously cheap $19 million. He’ll be 33 in September and I’ll bet he has a full NTC although he probably qualifies for a 5/10 guy anyways.

This is a fun team to root for right now. O’Hoppe is exceeding expectations, Schanuel is driving the ball harder even if the results aren’t in yet, the pitching staff is doing its job.

At some point I expect Logan and KP to cool off but we have plenty of guys like Trout and Ward who have yet to really heat up. And we get Neto back soon.

Just need to keep Newman and Lopez out of the lineup as much as possible.

Neither one of those guys were signed to start. Not like years of the past with Mayfield, Featherston, Wade or even The Squid. They were on the first string that respective season.

Lopez and Newman are fine with their role as a back-up. In fact, Lopez (whom I’m convinced is related to Minasian to somehow find his way to Anaheim) has the best glove of all the Halo infielders.

That new swing does look great, but he’s sporting an OPS over 1.400 right now. And MLB pitchers/pitching coaches are going to start finding ways to pitch him with the new swing.

I really hope he sticks, but we’ll know in June or so what we have with him offensively.

Defensively he looks so much better, as well. Confident, with quick first moves.

No reason in the World KP shouldn’t hit lead off. At least for a game or 2. I think as baseball fans we were all wrongfully conditioned to treat the lineup as this rigid and sacred thing that takes months and months of data to adjust. As stated in other threads part of what makes the dam Doyers so good is their willingness to quickly adapt to new data. Edman and Beav legend Mikey Conforto start the season raking.. Boom they are the new 3-4 hitters. KP is our best option to hit leadoff right now and right now Logan O’hoppe is the best protector for Mike Trout.

So we should do that until those are no longer the best options for those roles. Over the course of a 162 game season the lineup should be fluid outside of a few staple roles for super stars / elite talents.

Right now:

Paris – 2B
Rengifo – 3B
Trout – RF
O’Hoppe – C
Soler – DH
Neto – SS
Schaunel – 1B
Ward – LF
Adell – CF

Try that until data suggests doing something different.

Pineapple12
Super Member

You can also argue that Paris is thriving hitting at the bottom of the order.

It’s been 22 ABs. His early early season start is exciting and exhilarating, but it doesn’t mean we begin to treat him like he’s Ohtani lol. Neto was excellent for 150 games, that holds more weight to me at this moment in time.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Pineapple12

See, that’s what is awesome about being “argue about the batting order guy”. There is ALWAYS a guy who “MUST” be used in another spot. There is a guy who shouldn’t be in there at least once a week because no one is Cal Ripken. Then there is the guy you SHOULDN’T have moved in the order because moving him obviously screwed up a good thing and if it aint broke don’t fix it. Stupid Washington. Stupid Perry. O’l CheapnEvil.

Wait till the team is good. We have this level of stress now, but when the order get’s better the CoachDad vibe actually gets worse.

Hatcher_Is_My_Homeboy

He’s going to thrive anywhere in the lineup. The work he has put in has set him up for long term and sustainable success. Not that baseball won’t strike and slumps won’t come but.. it’s a long term thing with him. 4-8 at bats hitting lead off while he is red hot wont break him or us. Same thing with Logan hitting cleanup. Baseball is so much about timing in all ways and striking while the iron is hot. The ball is looking BIG af to both of those dudes right now so maximize it until it’s not.

Its a philosophy change that isn’t’ going to happen around here anytime soon so not really worth going back and forth on just pointed out how the best org in baseball treats lineup construction. Same way we shifted things at OSU as well to become the best program in the west.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

The only problem is that Paris isn’t Edman or Conforto. Right now, for now, he’s Ron Kittle/Rob Brower. Actually, not even that.

Hatcher_Is_My_Homeboy

Per usual You are missing the point my guy. The Doyers approach is to use data recency for lineup construction outside of staples like Ohtani, Mook and Freeman the rest of the lineup evolves based on performance arch. Tommy and Mikey weren’t middle of the order bats for them to start the year but they are now because of what we would typically dismiss as a small sample size of at bats. The strategy is to ride the sample while its hot. Then adjust when and if its not.

Kp is goating Mikey and Edman RIGHT Now.

Paris: .444.545.889
MC: .276.400.621
Edman: .250.261.591

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

What I’m saying is that they are using recency, which is cool, but they are doing it with established players, not guys with 25 lifetime ABs.

Hatcher_Is_My_Homeboy
Trusted Member

Forget KP who is oddly super polarizing for you and consider it for Logan for a Sec.. Wouldn’t you rather have him hitting behind Trout right now than anyone else on the roster? Like as in tomorrow?

Regarding the Doyers only using recency on established players.. they actually started doing this with Chris Taylor in 2017 and then Max Muncy in 2018.. Remember When everyone was like who the F are these dudes?? The Doyers fast tracked them to hit lead off and cleanup respectively after both dudes rode retooled swings to hot spring training production and a handful of good games to start the season.

Sound familiar?

It’s just a shift in thought about lineup rigidity.

He had 16 walks last year in 78 games (5.3% walk rate)

Ward’s walk rate was 9.5%

Even Adell was 7.8%

I’m too GA to look up how many pitches he sees per AB but his walk rate doesn’t read as a patient hitter.

Since I am talking about Rengifo being the leadoff hitter THIS year and not last year maybe we should look at this year’s stats? The season is of course young, but so far :

Ward : BB % 5.0%

Rengifo BB % 8.3%

Ward : OBP .250

Rengifo : OBP .306

I think I’ll go with Rengifo. Neto we have yet to see….

People keep bemoning about Vlad Jr and JeDi and coulda woulda shoulda, but it sounds like he was never going to come here ever anyway.

He wanted to play in Canada due to growing up there. Blue Jays were in contact with him long before he was even eligible. Also, from what Vlad Sr has said about the Angels, the only reason why he has an Angel cap in the HOF is because the Expos do not exist anymore and he doesn’t want to do anything with the Nats.

While we appreciate Vlad Sr a ton and he is a fan favorite, his son did not care for us, and considering Arte let him walk after 2009, did not think the Angels treated his dad well.

It is very telling that Vlad’s other sons did not sign here either, one going with the Rangers the other with the Mets.

Even minus Baldoquin, the Angels would have had the smallest intl pool money anyhow, as they had the best record in baseball the year preceding. They were non-competitive in the Vlad market, but many Angels fans convinced themselves that Vlad Jr would’ve taken much less money to play for Anaheim for sentimental reasons. Those were fictions.

Cowboy26

Reply to  Turk's Teeth

Huh?I think you are applying the new World Order to the Old World Order as the International pool market was not really relevant back in 2015, Turks. IIRC you could exceed your pool amount with one player by infinity but the penalties (other than monetary) prevented you from exceeding $100,000 on any other signees for at least a year. So if the idiot Angels had elected not to give Baldo $8+ million in January of 2015 they could have far exceeded the $3.9 million Vladdy Jr got from the Jays.

Baldo was an infield shagger for another Cuban Free agent pitcher that caught the eye and mesmerized the front office. I will never understand why Jer Jer felt compelled to pay him more than $10,000 . Maybe Evil Arte gave the Jedi $10 million dollars and demand he sign a foreign player with a week or he was fired?

We will probably never know.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Turk's Teeth

Really? I was under the impression that he was hanging out sitting criss cross apple sauce under the hats begging the Angels to sign him for any amount they had but Arte was like “nah, we don’t want the #1 international prospect” so Vlad had to suck it up and sign for by far the most money with Toronto. Then, to rub it in, he went out and got former #1 Intl Maitan off the Braves and then Maitan suck. All just to piss off CtPG Guy.

Are you saying you can prove that didn’t happen?

willb

While we appreciate Vlad Sr a ton and he is a fan favorite, his son did not care for us, and considering Arte let him walk after 2009, did not think the Angels treated his dad well.

It’s not just that Quebec is Canadian, it’s a docile French colony within Canada’s borders. Vlad’s first experiences on a different continent are strongly Francophile orientated. He passed on this to his son.

On the whole, it’s not the worst thing losing out on him. Check out Prince Fielders stats after 28. We don’t need another one those, do we?

Congrats to Vlad Jr. for getting what he can. But I have to be honest — I think this is a bad deal for the Blue Jays.

Reportedly this deal is for 14 yrs at 500 million. Frankly, I don’t think any player not named Ohtani is worth $500 million. And I don’t care how many years it is spread out over to lower the AAV. The reason is that the last 4-5 years of production are going to be garbage at best. Vlad Jr. is 26 yrs old. So, let’s be generous and give him 5-8 years of All Star level production with the bat. What he does beyond that is highly dubious based upon his body type and build etc.. Carrying that weight (245 pounds of it) puts extra pressure on the bones, joints and ligaments etc

That means Toronto will be paying him roughly $50 million per year for about 8 yrs (we can average the other $100 million of salary for the back 6 yrs and he is still being way overpaid) of being a very good to great one dimensional player, and then having to carry a broken down DH on their roster. Vlad is not a great contributor on defense, he doesn’t steal bases and he is not a pitcher like Ohtani. No bat only player is worth $50 million per season; and not even Tatis who plays great defense to boot or Witt Jr who steals a ton of bases are either. Plus, Tatis is getting ALOT less than Vlad at only $340 million. And Witt Jr. is getting just a paltry $288 million ! With those guys you could make an argument because of the things they do beyond hitting that they would be worth $500 million — but not Vlad.

Ohtani is of course arguably the best hitter in the game, one of the best pitchers when heathy, one of the top base runners and base stealers, AND a global icon who generates millions in revenue. Vlad is none of those things. With all that said, Ohtani is worth $500 million, but probably not the $700 million he got.

So, enjoy the 6-8 yrs of offensive production and no defense Toronto. You are paying a steep price for it.

I agree Jack. It’s a bad contract. Vlad’s performance level is very inconsistent. Look at his OPS+s for his career. 106, 115, 167, 133, 116, 167. I don’t think any of those years were worth 50M. He’s had 2 very good years out of 6 and one other year that was well above average.

I don’t care who you want to name. ANY contract of that length is a bad contract.

He had a bullpen just a few days ago. He’ll be back on the mound before you know it. And the Dodgers have their replacement for the injured Snell !!

I’m sure his impending third TJS will be the charm.

We’ll see. If that happens the $700 million will start to look like more of an overpay. But if Shohei still hits .300 with 40 bombs and 30 + SBs I doubt the Dodgers will be crying in their beer.

He’s unique. He making the club money apart from what he does on the field.

Rendon, yeah. But Mike was the consensus best player in the game when he signed his big deal. Vlad not near that. And unlike Vlad Jr Mike contributed both on defense and on the bases. Duh.

14 years for anybody is too long. Fourteen years with a guy built like him with those dollars attached is going to haunt the Jays.

Don’t worry. Evil Cheap Arte will rescue the Jays, just like he did when they had Vernon 2B2BS Wells.

I am OK with this deal ONLY for Toronto. It’s like I’m OK with the Trout deal for us. The jays get their George Brett locked in for life and that’s nice. Piss away about 100M on bad season’s from him? OK. By the time Vlad’s 35 Taylor Ward types will be 28M a year.

It’s not a brilliant contract by any means, even if you squint. But I think teams in the Jays position should do this one time at least so they get their Todd Helton/Tony Gwynn type hero locked down. He gave them a discount too, which is nice. He could have gotten a huge dollar amount for a shorter term if he was all about the cash.

Currently 1 WAR on the free agent market is worth about $9 million. So Vladdy Jr. is being paid at about a 4 WAR/season rate.

From 2021 to present he has averaged 4.6 WAR/season per BB-ref thanks to being 46% better with the bat than the average MLB player.

Over time the cost per WAR will increase on the open market and Vladdy’s production decreases. So in 5 years when one WAR is about $11 million, Jr will need to put up 3.5.

With Vlad’s weight issues this contract could look bad immediately but if he stays relatively healthy he’s likely being paid fair market value for the next decade.

Sure, it is pricey and likely to collapse but the Jays went into this knowing the last half would be an huge overpay. They wanted to keep their home grown star and embrace him as a native Canadian. The long deals, you bake in a lack of production into the back-end. But does keep them them relevant for the next few years, especially as their farm system is Angel-like, ranked 27th.

Sure, there is some value in having your “face of the franchise” for a decade. But even so, is any one-dimensional player worth $500 million ?

If Vladdy Junior wanted to play anywhere but Toronto, he’d test free agency. In the end, it didn’t matter.

He got paid now and can go celebrate by eating what he wants when he wants, and will not have binge GLP-1 meds to look svelte for free agency.

Obviously Vlad’s never been to Southern California or he’d give just about anything to play here. Sure, he’s from a third world shit hole with beaches. But he could PLAY in our third world shit hole with beaches AND pay huge taxes. Maybe eventually ride a bullet train from Lancaster to Shafter too. Plus, Angels fans! Who could resist?

”Sure, he’s from a third world shit hole with beaches.”

Didn’t know Montreal had beaches & really wanna know the story of why you dislike the place so much.

He’s from the DR. Lives there in the off season. Beaches. Was signed there. Near beaches. Loves Montreal in the sweat summer months. He’s got it figured out.

Ahhh. Didn’t realize/remember that Canada was part of the draft population so the DR loophole never entered my thought process

Thank you for filling the information gap.

Jesus Christ Finkelstein. Do you really not see the connection between Vlad Jr and the DR? Are you really gonna try this hard to ice skate up this hill? Did he play baseball in Canada his whole childhood? Does he love Mayonnaise? Does he demand signage in French?

He’s fking Dominican but had access to airports.

My bad. I didn’t remember he grew up in the DR. I assumed he grew up in Canada since he was born in Montreal speaks French and
is a Canadian citizen.

I don’t know about his eating habits but based on complaints about his weight he might have a love for Mayonnaise.
