LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Camps Open

Welcome all to the dawn of the 2025 baseball season. Across Phoenix and Florida this week pitchers, catchers, and quite a few position players reported to training camp. By this time next week, Cactus League play will be underway.

NCAA’s 2025 season also kicks off today with a full slate of games and several tournaments. With the Angels holding the second overall pick we will be following NCAA baseball much more than we have in the past.

Here are some key dates for the NCAA season and Nolan will be doing a weekly column on the top handful of players who might get drafted second overall and some who might be around at pick 47.

As this is an Angels site, we created an Angels Fan Guide to the 2025 NCAA season to help get you started.

And, as this is an Angels fan site, let’s get to the Angels news of the week.

Kenley Jansen, come on down. Jansen returns to Southern California and continues to bolster his Hall of Fame chances with every save he gets. That excellent link from FanGraphs also illustrates how he’s evolved as a pitcher the last few seasons.

Ultimately he provides a veteran anchor to what will largely be an unproven bullpen and I love it. Kenley is known to be active in the community and a great teammate. If the goal for this year is to let the kids develop and learn how to compete at the MLB level, having a guy like Jansen around is great.

If there was any doubt about the Angels dedication to the youth movement, the bobblehead schedule should dispel it. Neto, O’Hoppe, Joyce, and Schanuel will be honored with bouncing statuettes this season.

Another veteran, Robert Stephenson could be in the bullpen in April or May. Both Stephenson and shortstop Zach Neto received good news regarding their injuries this week.

Let the hopium begin….

The biggest stories out of training camp will be health. When will Neto be healthy, can Trout stay healthy, and of course how does the rotation shake out. The main site took a look at all three of those questions while I did a deeper dive on the rotation.

One person who will not be healthy or a part of the 2025 Angels is Anthony Rendon. He’s going to have hip surgery so he can collect his salary but I doubt he’s going to be part of the Angels again. If so, this is a fitting end to a disastrous contract and Rendon not calling manager Ron Washington back is a fitting end to Rendon’s behavior as an Angel.

Washington spoke with media yesterday. I love the shots of the players in action.

So did the Angels largest off season acquisition.

From around baseball:

Cheating a hole Alex Bregman joined a franchise renowned for cheating a holes and will play for a manager who is a cheating a hole.

The Padres took two interesting gambles this week. One was on Nick Pivetta on a four year deal. Then they brought Kyle Hart back from Korea on a one year deal with a club option for 2026. Now with a plethora of pitching, the Padres are expected to keep both Dylan Cease and Michael King and make another run at October.

Up north, the LA Deferrals signed both Clayton Kershaw and Kike Hernandez.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. Happy Valentine’s Day to you couples who celebrate and you might catch me at the Dirtbags game on Sunday depending on weather and a couple of other things.

We’re 8 days away from Angels baseball!

Just an FYI. I got tickets to one of the Angels games in Sacramento in May. If you get one now they are pretty cheap on Vivid etc. Got about seven rows back from the Angels on deck circle for $114 and there were a lot of other tickets that were pretty darn cheap for how close you’ll be sitting…. and that new Sac ballpark is said to be pretty awesome.

Just saying, if it’s something you can do easy the prices aren’t bad. I’m hitting a handful of Cal League games on the way up too… but like 4 total games over eight days cost less than $200 bucks. Plus, driving up that much of the Central Valley will be like jetting off to exotic Oklahoma… I will totally forget I’m even in California.

Thanks for the heads up Gitcho. I’ll be there on Monday Nite with my Sacramento Friend and some locals from down here.

As an added bonus The Salt Lake Bees will be in Sac town the week before so we will be at same exact park on Sunday Afternoon to see the AAA boys and then the Varsity playing the SacAss on Monday.

Should be Cray Cray

It would be cool if I could’ve lined up a week of IE, SLC, ANGELS but it didn’t work…. I am looking forward to seeing the Ports and Rawhide, have never been to their parks and they look… “rustic”. A friend has seen the Rawhide and said it’s pretty much like an A Ball game set in 1982, in a good way.

Yep so stoopid his original $175 Million dollar investment has appreciated 2000% in 21 years . Hey It’s his money so it’s his stoopidity. Not sure how much he saved on premiums but apparently many other stoopid owners dont buy insurance on large contracts either.

Maybe there is a silver lining though as now they can finally reach a retirement settlement with Tony No Legs without waiting on the insurance company to signify on it.

Trouty and 👑 Luis have made their way to camp.

And there’s this —

Mike Trout had his talk with Perry Minasian and Ron Washington this morning about how he’s going to be used this year. Sounds like it will be addressed when Trout talks to the media tomorrow morning.

Don’t know if any of y’all caught the USA v Canada 4 Nations game last night but my goodness was that entertaining… in a sports landscape where the pro bowlers play flag football, current 4x champion players call the regular season boring (NBA), and all the other other manufactured dramatizations in the sports industry, last night was just refreshing. You can catch it on demand with espn+. Obligatory GKG 🏒

Angels first round college choices are not working out the way everyone was hoping for, sure there is Neato Neto, but he is often injured so far. It’s time to start picking some prep stars to develop long term, it makes some sense. College picks how is that working out.

While we are not the only team that seemingly is blind to defense in drafting, or trading, it’s time now to start paying attention to that part of the game, defense cures a lot of headaches and frustration.

Tim Anderson going to be given a good look in the outfield on hopes he can revitalize his game, but at who’s expense? Where is Renny going to play? (Back-up at 5 positions may get him some PT.)

MDT should bring an additional glove to camp to be used at 1B.

Our Comeback Player of Year hopefully will be Trouty hitting something like .319-44-120 and leading this team into the Playoff’s.

This is the best draft pick they have had in a long time. They need to take a high quality guy that they know will turn out (or as close to that as possible). No book or bust.

But Kevin. Some draft picks don’t become MLB regulars. Maybe only half, and that’s college guys. How will we make it so100% of them become studs like on other teams?

Looking at video of both Bremner and Arnold, both would be really fun to have in our org.

I know it’s too early to call it, but Arnold would be my pick between those two. The arm slot, deceptiveness, command, competitiveness, and his fastball/slider combo is disgusting. Supposedly he is cooking up a nice change up as well (I haven’t personally seen it). I like how loose his body looks on the mound. His self-celebrations are a tad cringey though.

Obviously Arnold is not a 6’5’’ monster, so there’s always going to be some worry about how well his stuff will hold up, but I want this man in our system.

Bremner has a fun delivery too, he seems to have a really nice rhythm with it. It doesn’t appear nearly as deceptive as Arnold’s, and I’ve read that his fastball doesn’t grade out well. Bremner’s changeup, however, is beautiful and flows well with his delivery. I saw him spin a couple sliders and they looked very underwhelming, although of course he’s not a finished product.

Also want to mention, it’s crazy how there is so much velocity even in college now. Saw a pitcher named Marcus Phillips from Tennessee (he looked good) and Bremner’s rotation mate named Jackson Flora (tall, skinny raw-ish, flashed a couple nasty sliders) both throw absolute gas 96-99mph.

So my son’s best friend is 16 and what I’d call a very good HS pitcher with the chance to be a prospect (but still a long way to go) but he’s 6’4 and still growing. He faced Ethan in a tournament (playing up two years up – 14 year old pitcher vs 16 year old Holliday). This kid says he’s shocked he’s in the conversation as the number one. Says he didn’t just beat him, he beat him bad. Struck him out easily he said. He’s basically said, I’ve faced way better hitters.

And there it is. I doubt anyone was surprised by these roster moves. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/02/angels-sign-kenley-jansen.html

The next set moves will be way more interesting . Barring any major ST injuries. If/wnen C Moore and/or TA and/or J.D. any/or Set up reliever x or y make the team there will have to be multiple 40 man roster moves.

Did the doctor who examined Rendone before the signing get his degree in S.E. Asia or was he just blind. Worst signing in MLB history. With that said, I’m in agreement with PTP that not signing anymore long-term deals feels like the right way to move forward. Although I am really excited with all the Yuts that are around I am still waiting with bated breath for the draft this summer. Starting pitching is going to come up with one or two gems. Trade deadline will be fun to watch too. Shoving wet heavy snow gave me time to think about Angels Baseball and how much fun it will be to see how things develop in the next couple of months, and I really hope Neto and O’Hoppe progress to Super Stars. Come on Opening Day!!!!!

It would be cool if he just came out with a sub 3.00 WHIP from the get go. But his presence will still intolerable as soon as he has a bad outing. I think it would help if he looked and acted more like Jared Weaver.

Free Agent Dumpster DIIIIIVVVE! Here are some guys I wouldn’t mind bringing into camp, especially if we can also stash em in SLC…

Want a guy who can play 1B and OF with almost no split dif? Mark Canha

Want a guy whos bat is OK for a scrub and can play 2B/SS and likely OF if he trains it up in SLC? Brendan Rogers

Want a guy who can play all the outfield spots and almost hit his way out of a wet paper bag? Manny Margot

Or maybe a lefty swinging OF with an 800+ OPS against right handed pitching? David Peralta

How about one of Miami’s elite pitching prospects who is only 26 (looks 32), probably collapsed because Miami is depressing, but if you look at his MILB numbers may be worth a damn? Sixto Sanchez

Bullpen?

Righty Pedro Avila could actually be useful right now. Or Phil Maton’s low WHIP and hi K rate?

Then we have our LHRP dice roll. Jalen Beeks. Why? He’s spent a long time pitching in high altitude hell holes. But he throws a sick cutter/fastball mix and has a curve and change up that likely suffered in Colorado. He has also started in the MiLB. He could develop into a good long reliever spot starter type. He could quickly make it so Hillary Halofan could stop fixating on how much shhee hates Suarez. That’s a special kind of upside.

No. None of these guys move the needle. They aren’t supposed to. But they provide depth and, in the best case may even become trade chips.

Reply to  Jeff Joiner

Rogers has a career OPS of .632 away from Coors Field and an OPS even less against Right Handed Pitching away from Mile High City We already have Newman so that would be a waste.

Margot would be an option with his OF glove if we are giving up on Moniak & Adell but I just dont see that.

But out of the rest of the position players I would Love Peralta and his RHP dominance the most.

I cant comment on the pitchers that much other but I hope Perry still thinks we need some veteran setup guys because I really think we do so if the Angels think that the Red Barryon can fix them them lets sign them up.

Great list Gitcho . It’s interesting that there is still a group of talented players potentially available.

He’s old and getting worse, but would be better than total trash if we need him…. that’s kind of the case with most of these guys. Plenty not to like, but veterany grit and probably better than bringing Rada or some guy up too early to hit .180.

Well we still got Scott Kingery and hes on a major League Contract with minor league options left so theres a good chance he starts 2025 at AAA.

If TA has a great spring You’ll probably get your wish. In fact ,Roster Resource has him and J.D. Davis making the big club assuming Neto goes on the IL to start the season. In fact they have TA as the opening day shortstop in the Windy City. I’m sure Evil Cheap Arte would love that Hollywood feel good story considering what little it would be costing him.

I don’t see really any of these guys worthy of a roster spot. Angels have a stockpile of middle infielders but if anything, could use an extra OF in the event of a trade(s) involving the current roster. Duvall, Peralta or a Canha…

Pitching, Maton is ok I suppose but the pen seems at capacity. Perry has done quite a bit of dumpster work already.

Well I think we would all be alot more excited if he hadn’t hit .206/.297/.304 at AA last year. In fact, despite the cool name, Denzer’s career OPS across 4 levels is a dismal .671 so until he shows some signs of positive offensive output hes just not warming any of my cockles.

Well, just to restate the obvious, he was (along with Nelson Rada) one of the three youngest players in the Southern League last season and had no business playing among players on average 3-4 years older at that level.

Still, he is already a plus defender and natural shortstop, and shows considerable power in batting practice. He could complete three additional seasons at AA and still only be 23 – basically the age of most college draftees a year out from the draft.

Any other team would be giving this kid reps in A/A+ right now to refine his swing decisions, and try to develop an average hit tool. Whether he can do that in the next two years will determine whether he’s a glove-first utility piece or a second-division regular.

But no sensible fan should be judging Guzman yet on game outcomes, given where and when the Angels have tracked him. He actually had a solid 2022 in Arizona at 18, and was hitting well in Tri-City in 2024 at age 20 (already an aggressive placement) when he was prematurely promoted.

So about the time we lose him in the Rule 5 draft he’ll start learning how to hit the baseball?

That sounds about right.

Well, the Angels have three seasons before they risk losing him, and again, he has shown the ability to hit the baseball at age-appropriate levels.

Colt Emerson, Seattle’s #1 prospect, the #20 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, had his first taste of the Northwest League last season, same season as Guzman.

Guzman: .291/.325/.354
Emerson: .225/.331/.317

Same division, same competition, only a year separates them.

That’s not to say they have the same ceiling, but it does show that evaluating under-21 players only by their slash lines doesn’t really tell the full story.

The Phillies promoted their top prospect in shortstop Aidan Miller to AA at the end of the season – he’s age 20, only four months separate him in Guzman – and he couldn’t hit anything: .190/.227/.190 in his first taste of it, in a less offense-challenged division than the NW.

Cowboy26
Legend
Reply to  Turk's Teeth

Yes but both Emerson & Miller have hit well at the lower levels. Guzman really never has.
IIRC Guzman is eligible for the Major League portion of the Rule 5 draft after this season although he would really need to have a breakout year in AA for the Angels to feel compelled to protect him and add him to the 40 man.
