Beautiful. As some of you know I played at Oregon State. Got a chance to chat some with Trent this summer as our paths crossed during PT for my knee surgery rehab. Great kid, his bat will advance him quickly. Mitch has gotten back to more of a focus on playing elite defense lately which was the Pat Casey way so expect some improvement with the glove to come. TC is about to have a huge season for the Beavs this year. Would love him in the Halos org.
Yes, OSU alum is a cool thing. The Beavers also have Aiva Arquette as a top prospect. I’ve seen him in the top 10 on some lists.
They should be fun to watch this season. I might catch them here at Irvine.
Caraway is definitely a second-round target to monitor this spring on my early boards, alongside other hot corner prospects like Andrew Fischer on the college side, and Quentin Young and Dylan Dubovik on the prep side.
Of course, any of these guys may float up boards in the next 4-5 months and be out of reach for the Angels at #47, but time will tell.
It’s a rich draft in the first 3-4 rounds for positional talent with power upside, so my fantasy continues to be that Minasian trades for an extra supplemental rounder in the 33-37 range, much as the ever-savvy Dodgers and Rays did this offseason.
I’m probably setting myself up for disappointment but I’m hoping for a quality third baseman at 47.
If they are intelligent enough to follow your strategy even better. I can see the Yanks as buyers for Rengifo at the deadline. They have 39. The Mets could be deadline buyers and have 38.
If the team could somehow go 2, 38, 47 it could be huge.
Correct me if I’m mistaken, but I don’t think either the NYY or NYM picks are tradable. They’re only picking in the compensation range because they, along with the Dodgers, faced the highest luxury tax penalty and their first round picks each dropped 10 slots.
The only CBA round A teams with picks are the Brewers, Tigers, Mariners, Twins, Rays and Marlins. Five of those are competitive teams, however, and teams with holes that may need filling when the deadline comes around.
That said, one can imagine scenarios where the Mariners or Tigers are in a heated race come July, and the Angels are 15 wins out of contention, and one of those two feel someone like Jansen could make all the difference.
Angels Potential Draft Pick Trent Caraway, A Rising OSU Star
With the College opener this Friday the top prospects have been locked in for pre-season. While focusing on prospects around the country I have recently been honing in on the top dogs on the West Coast.
For this piece I’d like to focus on another highly rated player out of Oregon State University, Trent Caraway. Trent is currently ranked 16th nationally out of all players and ranked third for 3rd baseman. Trent had an outstanding Freshman campaign, his splits last spring, were .339/.431/.516 also adding a .947 OPS. Even with only tacking on 2 long balls with those impressive stats, I would say it’s safe to say that he will generate more than that this year, he will no doubt add some power to this OSU squad. Granted he only played 18 games last year he has a high ceiling this spring.
Looking at the winter season Trent had, I am excited to see what he can add to the Beavers lineup.
Oregon State opens the year with their first game on Friday vs Xavier. With Oregon State being a top 10 team it’d be fair to assume they would take the W. Following the game on Friday The Beavs play UNLV on Saturday, Indiana on Sunday, and then Xavier again on Monday. There are a lot of potential picks for the Halos on the West Coast and if you are interested in following college baseball, I highly recommend following Oregon State this year.
Here is the OSU schedule for the 2025 season including broadcast feeds for several televised games. You can catch them live at UC Irvine April 4-6 and Fullerton the following weekend. You Central Coasters can see them March 21-23 at Cal Poly.
