LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Roansy!

The Reds traded with the Dodgers for Gavin Lux. In return, they sent outfield prospect Mike Sirota and their Competitive Balance Round A pick. The Reds designated Roansy Contreras for assignment to make room on their 40 man roster. Michael Lorenzen has a one year deal with the Kansas City Royals. He gets $7 Million and there is a mutual option for 2026.

The Athletics extended Brent Rooker for five years. Meanwhile, the Brewers re-signed Jake Bauers to a minor league deal.

The Rangers signed reliever Chris Martin to a one year deal.

We have a lawsuit now about who gets to control the Padres.

Considering that the Yanks pulled out of a Flaherty deal last trade deadline due to bad medicals he should be perfect for a big money free agent contract with the Angels.

Just for kicks, some potential Stroman trades:

Stroman + Spencer Jones for Rengifo (the Yanks were in on Lux and Luis is better).

Stroman + George Lombard Jr. for Sam Aldegheri

I’d hate to lose Rengifo, but there’s a lot to like in Jones, a 6’6″ CF that has power, can steal bases and fields his position. Those 200 strikeouts last year do concern me though.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/01/yankees-trade-rumors-shopping-marcus-stroman.html

Yankees shopping Stroman. He was a complete bust in NY and a change is needed. With his $18 million player option to vest, he’s a tough sell to many teams. On the flip side, I think playing for Wash and playing with Trout might change Stroman’s attitude and contributions to the team. New York is a tough place to play, and being a minorty in those cities and not playing well makes it twice as hard. His road splits were so much better than at home.

We can get him for close to nothing if we eat money. I think he’s a nice piece to add and take a flyer on. Short term contract, medium risk with high potential upside.

This Stroman guys name comes up every year. Thankfully Angels have proven they won’t go there. He’s a real tool. But agree, nice to get another veteran starter as we know Anderson will regress and Silent C is likely to suffer sophomore lumps.

Getting another arm that can give the team 150-ish innings while not surrendering a draft pick and international money has appeal. And I’d rather have a 33-year-old Stroman over Verlander or Scherzer.

I like the idea of trading for an overpriced bust in order to get a couple prospects added to the deal. BUT as P12 said we need to be sure kids get innings. I think that will happen since the Indian Burial Ground will provide lots of opportunity. But Stroman is Fungo says, Stroman is a tool. I’d prefer to get Montgomery from Arizona.

Do you think Montgomery would sign for 2/$36 million that Stroman gets if he picks up the option?

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I think Montgomery makes 22.5M next year then he’s an FA. He took his player option after sucking which is why Arizona is butt hurt about him. We wouldn’t sign him to anything. Just get prospects, let him pitch, pay him, and trade him in July if he’s good for more prospects.

As gitcho says there is no question about Montgomery. it is a clear cut one year deal and unlike the Yanks, the D’backs likely really need to move that money if they want to fill any other needs.

Honestly I’d take either if they came with a couple of good prospects. In fact, I’d look to take on one of these, add a couple of prospects, then trade the now reasonably paid Anderson for a couple more.

Knowing that things will change by opening day, I’m seeing a line up of O’Hoppe, Schanuel, Rengifo, Newman, Rendon, Ward, Trout, Adell and Soler. Backups would be d”Arnaud, Kingery, Moniak and Kavadas. Add Neto, who I hope will be back sooner than later, that gives a group of 14 that produced at a clip of .242/.313/.406 (BA/OPS/SLG) and an OPS of .719. Results far better than last year’s squad produced, but not much beyond average for the league. In fact, it would be production close to the Royals, Guardians and Blue Jays last season and could produce close to 700 runs over 162 games. Too bad our pitching staff is likely to surrender 750 runs. Are there any Free Agents left that would move the needle enough to justify another, long-term contract?

That is last year’s line up with the addition of Trout and Soler, and Newman replacing Neto. Trout and Solar are solid improvements assuming Trout can stay on the field and Newman is a big step down from Neto.

Trout is better than Moniak, Soler is better than Calhoun and Newman, while worse than Neto, is better than Drury. I expect improved hitting, just not enough improvement to finish with better than say 74 wins.

Cleveland last season slashed .238/.307/.395 and produced 708 runs, so it’s not inconceivable that the 2025 Angels could do the same. And by the way, I’m not saying they will do it, but this seems to be the best case with these players. The Angels lineup looked much stronger going into 2024, but injuries and huge regressions by Moniak and Drury led to the team’s worst record ever.

Angels lurking for free agents?

Not that it would necessarily be smart, but the Los Angeles Angels are well-positioned to sign a free agent who rejected a qualifying offer, maybe even two.

The Angels hold the No. 2 pick in the draft. If they signed a qualified free agent, they would lose their second-highest selection, which is likely to be No. 47, and $500,000 from their international bonus pool. The only 47th pick in the last 25 years to compile more than 5 career bWAR is Matt Olson, who is at 32.8.

The signing of a second qualified free agent would cost the Angels their third-highest selection, likely to be No. 81, and another $500,000 in international bonus space. But the Angels gained an additional third-round selection, likely to be No. 107, after failing to sign the No. 81 overall pick last year, left-hander Ryan Prager.

The remaining qualified free agents are first baseman Pete Alonso, third baseman Alex Bregman, right-hander Nick Pivetta and outfielder Anthony Santander. Any of them would improve an Angels team that finished last season with a franchise-record 99 losses. But would any actually lift the club into contention?

One of the hitters might in a watered-down American League, particularly if — big if — Mike Trout is healthy. The Angels already have bolstered their offense by adding Soler, d’Arnaud and Kevin Newman. The addition of say, the switch-hitting Santander, would make the lineup that much deeper, enabling the Angels to bat their younger hitters lower in the order.
Pivetta, meanwhile, could join a rotation that already includes Yusei Kikuchi, Jose Soriano, Tyler Anderson, Kyle Hendricks and Reid Detmers. The Angels, however, might prefer free agents who are not subject to draft-pick compensation. Righty Jack Flaherty, a southern California native, could be one, though he would be more expensive than Pivetta. Outfielder Jurickson Profar, who like Santander is a switch hitter, could be another.

Price will dictate whether the Angels move forward on any remaining free agents. The team’s deals to this point — three years, $63 million for Kikuchi; two years, $12 million for d’Arnaud; one year, $2.75 million for Newman; and one year, $2.5 million for Hendricks — seemingly were reasonable. So was the trade for Soler, which amounted to a net addition of about $22 million over two years when factoring in the subtraction of the pitcher who went to the Braves, Canning.

Angels owner Arte Moreno can be unpredictable. Given his team’s draft positions, the free-agent opportunities available and the state of the AL, it would not be surprising to see him strike.

That’s really the problem, no one player is really going to make a difference. Maybe if they added Alonso, Bregman, and Santander, but then they still wouldn’t have the pitching. They would really have to add another starting pitcher and 2 bullpen arms on top of those guys to be considered serious competitors. Then you really would have your 300M+ payroll and maybe still not be that good.

I hadn’t considered it, but I think my priority would be….

NOT Bregman. Set aside the fact he’s a cheating dick who typically kills us but he’s going to be the most expensive and longest term deal. He’s on the decline now and will be absolute shit 3 years from now when we need him to be good.

While I’m not sold on Schanuel, I think between him Noda, and Kavaskas we can cobble together some decent production. Plus there are guys like Rizzo on the market every year for 1 or 2 year deals. So Alonso is a waste.

Santander’s defense isn’t nearly as bad as people make it out to be and he’s likely the lowest AAV so I think I’m with you.

FungoAle

Regardless of the noise, Angels will not sign a player with a QO attached. Alonso will go back to the Mets, Bregman will want to sign with a contender (Tigers, Red Sox or Cubs) and the same for Santander (think he’ll stay in the AL East). Pivetta seems like he’ll go back to the Red Sox.

Only remaining player I see of interest is Ha-Seong Kim but with the injury, makes is less appealing but he is a solid player. I like his profile and what he would bring to the line-up.

Other than Soriano, Lorenzen is likely better than any other starting pitcher the Halos have. He’s certainly more proofed than Detmers. You can argue Anderson or Kikuchi if you want. Hendricks is a no brainer. Halos also don’t know if Soriano can stay healthy.
