LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Love Me Tender

Today is the deadline for teams to either tender a contract to arbitration eligible players or cut them loose so they can join the free agent pool. The Angels entered the offseason with a dozen such players, but after trading Griffin Canning to Atlanta then shipping Matt Thaiss to the Cubs are down to 10.

Across baseball, there are quite a few ballplayers on the tender/non tender bubble and some would be nice additions to the Angels.

This was a tough reality check for Angels first round draft picks as Jordyn Adams was also designated for assignment this week. Local boy turned good Eric Wagaman joined Adams in being booted off the roster.

Why so much roster movement across baseball? Tuesday was the day for teams to set their roster ahead of the Rule V draft next month. In the Rule V draft teams can select prospects with certain amounts of minor league time that are not yet on a team’s 40 man roster. You can read all the details here.

Some intriguing prospects were right on the bubble and some are now available to be drafted by the Angels or any other team.

It is fair to expect more activity today as teams try to trade players they might otherwise cut loose. Keep coming back to the site for updates (and please update in the comments).

Unfortunately, this could be the last flurry of roster activity for a while. First there’s Boras client Juan Soto at the top of the food chain meeting with all the big clubs. All of his suitors will wait to see his decision before pivoting to other targets.

On the pitching side, Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki won’t sign until after January 15th when teams will have more bonus money to throw at him. There are already rampant rumors Sasaki has agreed to a handshake deal with the Dodgers, but the Japanese youngster is said to be “insulted” by such allegations.

That said, there could still be movement on the second tier of free agents. The Angels are said to be interested in Japanese hurler Tomoyuki Sugano. The pros: a nine pitch mix that he uses to keep hitters off balance and a miniscule walk rate. The cons: he’s 35 and lacks MLB caliber velocity. I’m still all for it at a decent price.

Sugano, Anderson, Kochanwicz, Kendrick, Detmers won’t remind anybody of the 90s Braves but it would be a serviceable rotation and give the youngsters time to develop, and that is key. Plus I believe Detmers has one final option year so we could let him develop in AAA if Perry signs another arm.

As we continue to assemble the Angels 2025 team and look to the future, let’s take a deeper dive into FanGraphs report on the Angels farm system. As you can see from this graph, the top of the list now has a 55 FV player and a 50 FV player so the ceiling is being raised a bit. Now look at the ETAs of the top 12.

Half of that list is expected to get a taste of big league action in 2025 with three more joining in 2026. For those of you not familiar with the FV grade, take a look here. The projected Future Values of guys like Cortez and Johnson comes from FanGraphs already pegging them as MLB relievers rather than starters so this is a very practical assessment. If any of them develop as starters, their value will increase.

The bottom line is that the Angels could, actually should, be sporting a much different team at the end of 2025 and beginning of 2026 than they do right now with a pitching staff that is largely cost controlled. Keep in mind Jack Kochanowicz and Ben Joyce no longer appear on this list.

Perry could have ample opportunity to add to the prospects list this year, too. The Royals are showing interest in Taylor Ward. Perhaps they are willing to part with Brady Singer who is not a prospect but would be a cog in the middle of the rotation for years to come.

At any rate, if the Angels surprise folks and end up as Wild Card contenders this year, great. But if the team does as expected, Perry should have some nice trade chips in Tyler Anderson, Luis Rengifo, and Taylor Ward to help the rebuild.

From around baseball:

Never mind the devastation throughout the area from a hurricane, a billionaire is pissed he can’t get taxpayer money in time to build a new ballpark so he’s threatening to move the team. Manfruad is pushing back on those statements.

Meanwhile, new pictures of the devastation of Tropicana Field have surfaced.

Congratulations to this year’s Cy Young Award recipients Tarik Skubal and Chris Sale. I though they both deserved the award this season.

There was also a very strong case for Zack Wheeler to win the NL Cy Young, however, and his great season deserves a lot more attention than it is receiving.

The MVP Awards are a few hours away but I’ll go ahead and congratulate Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani now as that is a foregone conclusion.

Again, there is another great season that deserves much more attention than it is receiving. Bobby Witt Jr. just put up a season for the ages.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I lost a near and dear friend this past week. A man I loved like a father who loved me like a son and we will celebrate his life today. Yet another reminder that life is short and love is the greatest gift of all. So hug your loved ones and prepare to enjoy them over the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

In addition to Austin Hays & Canning there are also other interesting players that were non tendered. Should the Angels have any interest on any of these guys?

But I would be weary of Romano’s late season elbow surgery. he may be another Sandoval model.

Finnegan depending upon price would not be a bad pickup if he would be willing to be a setup man/ second option closer but he saved 38 games last year and 28 games the year before despite the fact that his WHIP, K rate and K/BB rate is not that impressive.

Scrap heap pick-up, may I suggest Austin Hays, a LFer with some power. We would need him if Ward traded.

Agree. Consistent offense, a team can definitely expect minimum 255avg and 15+ hr from him. Not surprised Phils dumped him; he was expected to be that missing piece in the outfield they desperately needed last year and didn’t do much. I’m sure another team will get him before us.

Hays had kind of a shitty year last year but lifetime he’s been adequate with RISP’s (unlike most of our Motley Crue) and as an added bonus has hit really well career wise at the Big A ( of course that was against Angel pitching πŸ™ƒ)

Unfortunately like many of the players already on the roster he has severe platoon splits where he hits LHPs better than RHPs so unless He’s platooned with a strong LHB we would not be addressing this disparity by signing him

If Arte’s budget is $200m, where do we stand as of today’s non-tender and including all players who have been traded for or signed?

Cowboy26

I assume that $200 million budget does not include estimated player benefits, estimated payments for minor league players that are on the 40 man roster as well as required payments into the $50 million pre arbitration pool?

If it does not roster resource puts the current estimated major League payroll to be about $170 Million so that would still leave us with about $30 million left to spend.

What I dont understand is why the Angels also non tendered Teodosio, Wagaman and Adams. None of whom were remotely Arbitration eligible . Now I can kind of understand Teodosio since it opens up an additional 40 man roster spot (Does this mean there is a signing or two imminent including possibly another teams non tender today?) but why did you have to release Wagaman and Adams? If neither one was claimed off of waivers by another team I believe they could have been assigned to the minors after being kicked off of the 40 man roster earlier in the week with no penalty to the team.

Sometimes organizations just decide it is time to move on and give others a chance. There could be underlying aspects β€” like attitude of the player, coaches saying we have done what we can, etc. Eventually, it just becomes time for a change of scenery.

An interesting side note I believe any team that signs Sandy this year would still control him next year through arbitration if he is tendered a contract next off season.
This is why I believe the best way for him to maximize his salary is to sign a 2 year contract this offseason.

The Braves just non-tendered Griffin Canning, proving that Soler was a salary dump all along. If the Angels wanted Canning back as a depth move, seems like that would be pretty straightforward at this point.

A lot of fifth starter types entering the market tonight.

Yes. The trade for Canning was just to make it look like the Braves got something.

So basically the Braves thought so much of Soler that they got rid of him for nothing. Taking Canning was likely the way they avoided having to pay some of Soler’s salary in the deal.

In fact – the Braves arguably came out of it smelling like a rose – getting rid of an expensive contract with Soler and ultimately owing no money to Canning. Brilliant!!

Not sure Soler’s absorbed contract was that expensive though since its effectively $26 million for 2 years.

Soler is effectively a 1 WAR player earning $14m base salary with incentives so it’s somewhere around $16m total for 2025. Generally 1 WAR is worth $8m so he is getting paid approximately double his value. Maybe that’s not Rendon expensive but it’s arguably double the price that his contract should be.

What I was trying to say is that the Braves obviously made the decision that they wanted to get rid of Soler and not pay any of his future overpriced contract and they did that effectively. By β€œtaking on” Canning’s obligations (likely around $7m for 2025) they brought the Angels net cost of acquiring Soler down to the range of his actual value. Then the non-tender to Canning and the Braves got out of a bad contract for nothing. Pretty smart on their part.

Actually it’s $ 13 million as the Braves are picking up $ 3 million of Solers amount since I believe this was a deferred Signing bonus

$13m is better than $16m for sure. I read the Angels were responsible for $16m for 2025. I hope you are right. Although $13m is still too much for Soler.

I saw a rumor about Buehler to the A’s today. What free agent in their right mind would sign with that organization right now? Sure, they finished above the Angels, but playing in a minor league park for the next three years sounds unthinkable. Can you imagine the embarrassment if the A’s made the playoffs and had to host a postseason game there? That’s Disney movie territory.
I heard someone won the NL MVP. Good for them.
I didn’t comment the other day, but thank goodness Manfred is pushing to unify MLB on media. Is it the anti-trust exemption that keeps baseball so far behind other sports in broadcasting and salary caps? I’d love to watch my old teams or out-of-market stars more often. You’d think MLB would want my $300 a year for that privilege. Blackout rules are stupid. Let’s get this done already!
Signing a top pitcher (Clickbait Alert!) who’s due for regression would excite me about as much as the Pujols signing. I’d be pumped at first, only to see no playoff wins. Probably not the right move but then again, I enjoy seeing the team sign big names even if I hate it when they don’t work out. Then I go back to ranting about the farm system. In short… Buttercup.
Jordyn Adams? Isn’t he the guy some Seattle GM thought could be a superstar because of his athleticism, but he lacked the baseball skills to even make it to the majors? That might sum up part of the Angels’ farm system problem.

Eppler drafted Adams in 2018. Eppler also drafted Thaiss in 2016. The Angels have cut both loose this season, and Eppler in general presided over very unsuccessful drafts. (Will Wilson in 2019!).

Dipoto’s last draft was 2015, when he drafted Taylor Ward in the first round with the 26th pick. That actually worked out rather well, given how weak the draft class was, and how many of us thought Ward was an overdraft who would be available in the 2nd or 3rd round. He proved everyone wrong, and actually has the 11th highest career WAR among the first rounders of that draft – not bad given the Angels selected last in 2015.

I give most credit to Taylor himself. Every scout thought he was a defensive beast who might never hit for average or power, and he became an above average hitter with above average power who never catches. πŸ™‚

But it does speak to the relative flexibility and athleticism of good catchers.

Man. You want to talk about a weak ass 1st round…. look at the 2018 Adams draft year. Brady “Plain White Toast” Singer may be the most flavorful offering on the list. Logan Gilbert. Grayson Rodriguez maybe? As far as guy’s the angels “missed” on it’s Singer and maybe Casas….

Get ready to complain about the scrap heap. It actually makes good sense to take a Rule 5 Pick this year. Any of Brandon Young, Zach Messinger, Chandler Champlain, Adrian Pinto, Jason Ruffcorn, Ben Cowles and Jerming Rosario are all guys I could see the Angels taking and making one of “The Kids” who gets played. And that’s just guys off the list MLB put out for that article.

I actually really like Ben Cowels. I think he’d be a useful guy for us and he’s got grit. A bunch of those pitchers may be worth a run too for a team like us.

I think grabbing George Valera from the Guardians DFA hell wouldn’t be a bad flyer either.

It’s time to dig through the coal and see if we can find a diamond. This is a perfect season to keep a Rule 5 pick on a roster and play him to see what happens.

I am shocked that Judge got unanimous MVP because Witt’s season was spectacular, too. I think winning a batting title and a Gold Glove at the most important defensive position other than catcher is jaw-dropping. He also stole 31 bags, 211 hits, 109 RBI’s and 32 bombs with a 171 OPS+. Granted, Judge’s offense was unbelievable, but Witt’s total game blows him away, and he took the Royals to the playoffs. I get it, and I still might have voted for Judge, but I would think there were old-school defensive-minded guys who realize how next-level Witt’s season was. If I’m picking any player in baseball – I’m picking Witt with utter ease. I could see same argument for Lindor.

The depth in the minors is improving. I’m for keeping Ward and Rengifo for 2025 though. With Neto’s status uncertain, the Halos need other bats just to be an MLB level team. We all want improvement and a contending unit. But it needs to be done step by step.

I think they will be kept but how long do we have to sit through Wards 1.5-2 month swoons and subpar defense? Having said that, he’s cheap and other teams will sense his performance will see a boost by getting out of Anaheim. Let’s get something this year.

If the team is out of it by midseason, things change obviously. That will likely be the case but you need to plan to compete. So you keep Ward and Rengifo until there isn’t any reason because the team is out of it. If you really like one and can re-sign him appropriately, do that.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Angelstan

Here. Let me help you…

Step 1. Understand that this team is NOT gonna compete this year.
Step 2. Understand you are far from just “a player or two away”.
Step 3. DO NOT admit this publicly.
Step 4. Trade what ever single players you have with value for as many prospects as you can get.
Step 5. Cut payroll and don’t spend a ton on new players because, while the team can’t win, it’s literally a waste of millions of dollars.
Step 6. Play the kids.
Step 7. Repeat first six steps till you have about a dozen cheap good players.
Step 8. Start making decisions based on “competing”.
Step 9. Buy overpriced free agents half of whom fail.
Step 10. Repeat 8 and 9 till you win a ChampiHam Sandwich.

Complain.

If you want to keep Ward and Rengifo till the team’s out of it, the “Arte method”, you should still trade em this winter cause we are out of it now. Or you run the risk of last year again, where Ward gets cold for the deadline and Rengifo is hurt just in time to be untradeable.

#1 is really the key and the whole plan is very solid albeit painful. If you were willing to spend a lot of money and if it were possible, you could acquire and trade for 2 middle of the order bats who play 1B, 3B, or right field (Like Alonso and Bellinger for example.), and a top of the rotation pitcher. You would be able to field a team that had well above average bats at 7 positions. Everybody but 2B and maybe catcher. Schanuel could be sent down to finish developing, and Adell would become your 4th OF, which would not be bad because he is solid defensively, runs well, and hits for power. You would have a pretty solid rotation with Soriano as your #2 and Joyce would be your closer. You would be a legitimate wild card contender and possibly a division contender. The team would be interesting, competitive, and you would sell a lot of jerseys. You would be keeping Ward and Rengifo for the time being but almost any of your players could be traded at any time if you choose to do so, and except for Alonso the contracts would all expire in 2 years with Rengifo. This would be fun and cost a lot of money but it would also mean no more high draft choices, and you would need the 3 new big time players to pull it off. It’s fun dreaming. This won’t happen and really anything else is just window dressing on #1. Barring something like what I just described, as you correctly stated, we are NOT competing in 2025 and not likely in 2026. 2027, when Rendon is gone may be the 1st opportunity. We all probably need to come to terms with the fact that for us to replicate the Royals or Baltimore, or even the Astros, we would have to repeat last year 4 more times.

I meant they would all expire with Rendon.

You basically just made the argument that this team is just a Pete Alonso, Cody Bellinger and #1 starter away from making it all worth it.

I don’t trust you at all because you include Bellinger in paragraphs that involve being a better team.

Actually, this whole thing just sounds like you want Arte to spend so you feel a little bit happy till May.

I know you’re pro rebuild. But I’m not seeing it here. I swear to gah the “The contracts will expire in two years” trope is a fking disease around here.

We NEED to be cheap and suck. If for no other reason than CtPG Guy can finally experience true cheapness to match the level of his past bitching. But also, it’s how you rebuild quickly… even with a team that is “not rebuilding and will compete in 2025”.

Not a bad starting 5. He’s one guy I could see wanting to come home. The other FA Californians, Fried and Flaherty have had a taste of winning, don’t see them wanting to play for the sub-par Angels.
