LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Thaiss For Cash

The Angels traded Matt Thaiss to the Cubs yesterday for cash considerations.

Chris Sale won the National League Cy Young Award. Tarik Skubal won the AL Cy Young Award. Here are the vote totals.

The Cleveland Guardians acquired outfield prospect Alfonsin Rosario from the Cubs in exchange for right handed pitcher Eli Morgan. The Mariners sent cash to Tampa Bay in exchange for Austin Shenton. In a corresponding move, they DFAd right-hander JT Chargois. The Guardians designated outfielder George Valera and relievers Peter Strzelecki and Connor Gillespie for assignment. The Cubs designated Adbert Alzolay and Brennen Davis for assignment. The Tigers designated infielder Eddys Leonard and relievers Ricky Vanasco and Brendan White for assignment.

Here are Tim Kelly’s predictions for who is most likely to get traded from each team. He picked Jo Adell for the Angels and said Taylor Ward is unlikely to get traded.

So who does this indicate we’re acquiring?
Snell?
Bieber?
Fried?
Sugano?
Bellinger?
Burnes?
Flaherty?

It seems like there should be alot of interest by the West Coasters especially if you add Wash’s renowned 15 WAR .

I’m feeling Beiber is the most likely and Fried is the most unappealing.

Pure speculation, folklore and urban legend. Manaea is prime for regression, and if you dye his hair orange, he’s Carrot Top’s brother.

Which, of course, means that we are going to sign him for an insane amount of money.

More speculation. Manaea reinvented himself throwing the ball like Chris Sale. Not sure how that translates to a full season when heavy team analytics break him down. Wouldn’t want to be stuck with him for 4yrs if he regressed to his prior form. I’d rather Angels risked money on Sugano instead.

“Buh we need high cali burr starter for our sub-.500 teams push to be .500.” But when CtPG Guy says that he really means Burnes or Snell…. otherwise the piss will flow.

The piss will also flow if we sign Snell and he turns out to be Blake Snell, but over 30, and thus we should have known he’s washed. RealAngelzFanMan JuJu takes guys that have had one major injury absence in five or six years and turns them into Tiny Tim. Imagine what our TrAdition of power bottoming will do to Snell. We may kill the poor guy….

But it’ll be OK. Cause we’ll sign Burnes to a responsible 2-3 year deal. That’s all Perry has to do to not be a martinet.

Yesterday we received the final grades on both the 2016 and 2018 MLB drafts 🤦‍♂️😑

It’s a good correlation to a 99 loss season in 2024

I don’t have the time to write out an entire IIWPM right now (maybe I’ll sneak some time tonight), but while my mind is working I’d love to hear your thoughts/hate

Trade Ward to KC for prospects
Trade TA and a prospect for Bellinger
Sign Snell

I can’t think of anything we need more than prospects.
That is except five position players, four starters and some bullpen help.

You realize thats a projected net add of over $42 million of new payroll for next season right?

It would put our calculated CBT payroll amount within pocket change of our 2023 final CBT amount. (even though the first tax apron is now about $8 million higher) NFW Arte goes for that in 2025

My own worthless opinions.
Don’t sign Snell. Angels are not sniffing playoffs in two years and Snell won’t be around in 2027, I don’t think. Save the money for better bats.

See if TA has a first half 2025 that is as good as first half of 2024. If so, trade at the deadline. Should have done this already.

I’m on the fence about Ward. I see Bellinger being that much better than Ward and team has control on Ward.

I’m good with that but sub Saguno for Snell and save a ton of money.

Moves Trout to a corner, adds Belli, and most importantly adds prospects.

So tomorrow is Non tender deadline day including Arbitration eligible players where teams have to decide whether they will offer them a major League Contract for 2025 or release them. It’s not uncommon to see teams reach pre tender deadline deals with some players ( sometimes even multi year deals ) especially those coming off of major injuries.

So my question for every one is: Do the Angels non tender Patrick Sandoval and save some cash for ’25 or do they possibly reach a discounted 2 year pre-tender deal to eliminate 2 of his arbitration years not knowing what he’ll be like returning from TJS sometime later this summer?

Senator_John_Blutarsky

If they can get a back-loaded, incentive laden deal, then do it. Otherwise, DFA.

in his situation, it doesn’t make sense to have him get straight arbitration money. A 2-year deal would make sense or 1 plus a team option.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yah. I think with his injury, plus his pre-injury suckness, he’s not likely to beat getting a 2 year type “fix yourself” deal. I don’t think there is any way they just pay him strait arb money. But i also don’t expect them to not at least try to keep him on good cost terms. We can bitch all we want about Sandoval and our impression of his attitude and blah blah red face, but even “serviceable” arms that can do 100 innings at a sub-5 ERA are not exactly thick on the ground.

jco

I think that’s right. MLBTraderumors projects Sandoval to get 5.9 million in arbitration which is too much for a player unlikely to pitch in 2025. A 2-year deal for 5.9 total might make sense, but even that seems high.

2 years at $5 million total with a $10 million option ($1 million buyout) for 2027 would be a decent deal for everyone. Sandoval would guarantee himself $6 million total (in case he can never be a quality major leaguer again) and the Angels would get the upside for 2027 in case Sandoval establishes himself.

Sandoval has made about $8 million to date which is a lot, but after agents etc, it’s not that much. Another $6 million would help set him up for life. On the open market, I think he’s less.

Sandoval is an interesting player. His FIP was second only to Soriano and not by much .380 to .387. The 2 of them were in a class by themselves compared to the rest of the starters as the next closest was silent “C” at .462. He’s frustrating to watch and is apparently very unlucky. He’s actually someone who is worth sticking with for now.

Interesting question and one that may be a bit telling regarding future moves. A negotiated two year deal at say 8 million could be structured at approximately $2m for 2025 and $6m for 2026. As mentioned a team option for 2027 could be included. That type of deal would communicate the team is building for the future and make Sandoval a cost controlled 4/5 type starter for ‘26 and possibly’27. Definitely justifiable despite previous inconsistency.

If the Angels cut bait with Sandy, I expect that would be a savings move with the 2025 budget in mind signaling a possible signing of a pitcher FA in 2025 to go along with the “competitive” narrative.

So we may gain some insight based on what the team does with Sandoval.

if the team signed Shane Bieber to a back loaded multi year deal who is essentially in the same injury recovery timeline this would be a clear investment in 2026 and beyond.

I’m not sure having 2 players on your 40 man in the same situation (but where one has had incredible success and the other has been an incredible disappointment) would make sense for this team. So if the Angels non tender sandy maybe thats an indicator of much larger things to come?

I’m not sure its entirely fair to call him an incredible disappointment given where he was drafted and what the angels gave up to trade for him. Sure, he didn’t live up to the ceiling we all hoped he was capable of reaching, but the team certainly didn’t overpay for him.

He’s been able to keep hitters from hitting him hard but serious malfunctions elsewhere. No way would I would into arbitration on the heels of his of this elbow surgery. With the injury, leaning hard to non-tender him. Recovery will take him beyond ’26 as the first year back is typically a throwaway.

Was pretty psyched when we first came onto the scene but hitters around the league learned to be patient and make him throw strikes. Walk rates haunt him and was having hard times going deep into games.

How come when the Angels acquire “Two-time All-star” players, they’re never an All-star during their time with the Halos?

Perry: okay Alex, I’ll take “Why the Angels Fail” for $400

Alex: Well Perry, you should run the table of on this category. Here’s your question: “Angels acquire “multiple-time All-star” players, why are they never an All-star during their time with the Halos?”

Perry: “Oh, I know this. “What is the Angels only acquire prior award winning players AFTER they have exited their peak performing seasons.”

Alex: “That’s correct Perry. By the way we would have also accepted the response “What is Arte Moreno’s evil plan.””

Tampa Bay Rays need to move! 👍 Says GPB. Voters don’t care if the West coast Florida panhandle has a team as they voted to postpone a 312 million dollars opt in bond to support keeping the Rays with a new 1.3-billion-dollar stadium complex. Move to where you are wanted already.

Adell = Soler with slightly better defense. Moniak < Adell or Soler.

If Perry is interested in improving the team for the long term, Adell will not fetch much – if anything – of value. Moniak would fetch even less. If the intent is to acquire prospects that are more than “change of scenery” guys, Ward or Rengifo are the correct trade candidates.

Twebur

Adell is under the microscope up to the trade deadline. Hoping his leg kick adjustments are now cemented in as his new swing. Less K’s, more contact, better situational hitting. A full season of that will increase his offensive production, + his improved defense and hopefully an improvement in running the bases.

But if we have months of struggling to hit .180, Ton-O-K’s, and infrequent contact………..time to move on at the deadline.

My lean, we won’t be looking to trade him. He settles in and has a chance to become one of the corner stones, good guy, “drafted-came-up-young-been-here-forever-guy”, plays hard with some emotion, I see some Grit in him…….. Might never be great, but solid.

Yah. We all saw him have streaks of being able to square up the ball, even go the other way with pitches, etc. He’ll always have a high K rate, that’s a given. But I’m pretty sure they want to see if they can get those upticks in performance to last longer. So he probably gets another talk from Washington about not worrying too much about being in the line up and plenty of chances. But he’ll need to get his OPS up well above .700 this year or they’ll likely cut bait.

I agree although I’ll be interested to see how much urgency Perry has. Last year there was no sense of urgency, just let everyone play. Since we aren’t going to be any good this year, I have no issue with both Adell and Schanuel playing all year. I’ll be interested to see what the Angels do after that should they not show significant improvement. Same actually now goes for O’Hoppe. I could easily see him become the back up catcher in 2026 if he repeats last year next year.

I definitely agree with your last sentence and about Moniak, but Adell and Soler are not really comparable at this point. Adell is a far superior defensive player and Soler is a far superior hitter. Soler was a 30% better hitter last year than Adell. Adell has been incredibly consistent as a hitter for 4 consecutive years with around a 90 OPS+.

Flaherty will get you everywhere. Well, maybe not everywhere, but might help the Halos get to 80 wins, the Dodgers Jack Flaherty may just look good in “Get you’re Red on”. Reportedly he is making that a consideration as one of his choices.

80 wins is meaningless at this point of time. All it does is further delay the “non-rebuilding rebuilding”. Get inning eaters for backfill and keep pitching the kids.

I do not disagree, as a matter of fact I have been preaching that direction for some time now. Nor do I care who signs with us now as long as the goal says the same with acquiring the young good to great prospects. I was just commenting on a report that Jack is considering coming South this Winter.

I agree that wins are meaningless at this time, but either this year or next we should sign a top of the rotation type guy to lead the kids.

I prefer this year’s pitching class to next year’s.

Good morning, good-year for Sale, and long tread life too. 😄 All these awards so far are hard to take the guys in second place side. Except I do believe Baseball digest “Player of the Year Award” going to “Hear come the Judge” should have gone to “Shotime” for his 50-50 season, but that’s just me being a bit West Coast bias or maybe anti Yankees.

Judge higher on WAR because he played a position. I could make an argument for either player. But Shohei at 50/50 is so unique in baseball history that I’d probably give it to him.

Judge’s .322 with 58 HR and 140 RBI OPS of 1159 and almost 11 WAR all while playing solid D is pretty outstanding though.
