LA Angels Monday News Crash: Yankees-Dodgers

The Yankees defeated the Guardians to earn a berth in the World Series. Meanwhile, the Mets lost their series to the Dodgers.

The race to the bottom is just a little bit more competitive. The Rockies will lower their payroll for next season.

Shane Farrell will probably be the new Farm Director for the Detroit Tigers, although they are still working out the details of their arrangement. Scott Sharp withdrew his name from consideration for the Giants General Manager position. Possibly he is not interested in playing second fiddle to Buster Posey. The Phillies extended manager Rob Thomson for one year.

Indeed a dark time to be an Angels fan.

I noticed Mike Trout was trending on social media this morning and the main idea people were posting about was how sad it was for Trout that Ohtani reach the world series the year after the left the Angels. And how the Angels mismanaged his time with the team.

For the Dodgers, they are solidifying a new generation of fans here in the region. And the Angels will always be second fiddle. If Mike Trout never has a chance to do anything meaningful for the Angels I think it will loom large in our teams history, just like the Donnie Moore game haunted Angels fans and the team for a generation.

Reading today posts here at CtPG I do wonder, do all Ducks fan’s hate the Kings? Do all Clippers fan’s dislike the Lakers or do all the Chargers fan’s hate the Rams? Kind of a depressing day at least for Angels fans and for that I feel bad, not a lot bad, just a little bad. You see I like the banter with my family and friends and myself about Dodgers vs Angels, especially during the: “Freeway Series” and who has the best players and so on. For years I got the last line in with “Which of us won the last World Series?”. I have never heard Dodgers fans say anything that I take personally, nor do I take anything said here about me personally, but I do really dislike the Yankees, not as much as the Asstros, but it’s close. I hope the World Series goes 7 games, and the Dodgers win it at home in gm 7 in the bottom of the 9th and most folks will celebrate and have a good time and then move on to rooting for their favs in other sports, but no matter what happens I will still enjoy the baseball and the big stars and happily root for the team with the lowest of payrolls that’s playing 😀

I think hardcore Angel fans hate the Dodgers. Just like hardcore Mets fans hate the Yankees. Or hardcore White Sox fans hate the Cubs.

It’s a crosstown rivalry thing. Not very difficult to understand on this site as the Angels have played second fiddle to the Dodgers in So Cal for a long long time (other than really 2002, 2005-2009).

Perhaps I fall more in line with your line of thought. I felt the heartbreak in ’86 when the Angels lost to Boston, but I also felt a surge of excitement two years later when Kirk Gibson hit a homerun that took the wind out of Oakland’s sails completely too. Maybe all I really want is a team to root for and an exciting game.

I had a couple long drives this weekend. Just me and God. We talked about all the disgust I will feel at a DoyKees World Series. Who will I hate most winning it? Why has He allowed this to happen to me? Why can’t I just enjoy soccer?

I played it in my head. “AND DUH YANKEES ARE YOUR 2024 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS! CELEBRATE YANKEES FANS!” then “AND DUH DOYERS ARE YOUR 2024 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS! CELEBRATE DOYERS FANS!”

Both make me want to puke. But I realized pretty quickly that I hate the idea of the Doyers win more. It’s not like I’m gonna sit through this WS anyway, how many shots of Ohtani, Judge, Ohtani meeting Judge, Both meeting Jeter, somehow working Patrick Mahomes into the mix…. can I be expected to sit through? But I would rather watch local Blew Crew suffer defeat and sit through a few smug Yankees fans all winter.

But really I’m just hoping both teams and their fans catch cholera at the Latrine along with all the stars from Fox’s new hit TV shows….

Go Steelers. Time to learn hockey.

It would be interesting to poll the users to see how many choking on a LAD-NYY World Series, would also call a Lakers-Celtics Finals a “classic”.

Yes, it would be a classic… Because I’m a Laker fan. Even if it’s a lot less now, with the douche bag LeBron James and horrible ownership that has tarnished the Lakers. Though the Clippers have gained an identity and some street cred, they are the Clippers. Clippers gonna Clipper. Lakers own SoCal compared to the Clips, like Doyers own SoCal over the Angels, none of that will change in our lifetime.

Personally, my hatred runs deeper for the Doyers. A lifetime of jealousy, the asshole big brother, the arrogance, and even though I don’t know how, or will it ever be proven, they cheat somehow. Yanks are less evil to me, but evil nonetheless.

I have truly enjoyed the 35’ish years since the Doyers won a WS and hope it continues (NO! The 2020 Covid Company Picnic Fun Tournament doesn’t count). And if by some chance the Baseball Gods let the lesser of 2 evils Yankees win? I will point and laugh, and laugh at the Doyers universe!!! 😂 🤣 😂 🤣 😆 😂 🤣 😂 😂 Except for the disgusting thug felonious fans, and that’s a lot of them, they will stick a shive in me. When I see those criminals, I’ll just keep it to myself and inside my head, quietly giggling my ass off when I pass them by.

Go Yankees!
May another Reggie Jackson hip-thrust get reviewed in the NYC replay office and go against the Doyers in a dramatic loss!
May the NYC elites rule the MLB (even if I hate that too)!
Here’s to the doyer fans turning on each other in the aftermath!

Besides that, should be an entertaining WS!

I wouldn’t say I’m choking on a Dodgers-Yankees world series, but I would have preferred seeing other teams involved. And for the record, the Bird-Johnson era finals are indeed classics. As for world series, 2002 is tops for me, followed by 1975. Maybe 2024 will be a classic up there too, unless an earthquake or meteor strike ruins it.

I think the Astros winning the series would make it worse for me. I don’t think I can ever root for them until Altuve and everyone else from that 2017 team are retired.

You forgot another Trout injury, the same Rendone, our lone FA arm who was damaged goods, and our former mvp celebrating his greatness with the blue. I think from a fan standpoint this has to be the worst year ever. At least it opens the door to a positive 2025.

I look at it slightly differently. The Angels were lousy this year. Let the Yankees and Dodgers get having teams that can make the WS out of their system when the Halos were never in the hunt anyway.

The Rockies have decided to lower payroll. With the Twins already feeling the pinch, it looks like the gap between the “haves” and “have-nots” is only going to grow. Unfortunately, I don’t see the Angels competing with the Dodgers in revenue anytime soon. And let’s not forget that big TV deal Arte signed right before Pujols could be on the verge of imploding too.
It’s making me wonder, are the recent spending cuts because Arte wants to rebuild? Or does he see the writing on the wall, knowing there’s no way we’ll stay in the top ten payroll as the landscape shifts?
In the long run, I see this going two ways: either MLB.tv becomes the national streaming service, which could level the playing field, or teams charge for their own services, where the rich get richer. In that case, it’s only going to get worse for small-market teams while the Dodgers and Yankees cash in even more. At least one of them is going to win a championship this year. (My priority is rooting against the MFY or evil empire but it’s hard to tell between the two battling it out for evil empire)
What do you think? Could a nationalized system help with parity, or are we stuck watching teams like the A’s and Pirates drift further into obscurity?

Fair point, I’m not asking anyone to feel sorry for the Pirates or Bob Nutting. But the bigger issue is that the system is set up in a way where small market teams like the Pirates barely have a fighting chance. When the Yankees and Dodgers take up around 25% of playoff spots every year, it leaves teams like the A’s, Pirates, and others practically shut out of a real opportunity to compete. That’s not just bad for fans of those teams, but it hurts baseball as a whole.
Parity is what keeps things interesting. Imagine if every team had a shot, not just because they happen to hit the lottery with a once-in-a-generation player or got lucky with prospects, but because the system wasn’t so heavily tilted toward the wealthiest franchises. Teams like the Twins and Rockies are already feeling the pinch of this TV contract mess, while the Dodgers and MFY continue cashing in on their giant revenue streams. Shouldn’t we want a league where every team has its turn, instead of two teams dominating the postseason year after year?
I’m all for a system that allows smaller teams to take a swing too, rather than watching the rich get richer.(I hate communism, but there I said it)

How about a salary floor, so Nutting has to invest that profit sharing money into the team, instead of pocketing it?

Just get it over with. This is MLBs dream WS which will be watched intently on both coasts and Japan. Me – I’ll probably watch the occasional game. I find myself more apathetic than anything else.

In many ways I feel like time has warped me back to the 1970s where the Dodgers were really the only game in town with Garvey, Lopes, Buckner, Yeager and Cey. And down in OC the Angels were honestly pretty terrible. Back then I was young and dumb and hopelessly optimistic about my Halos. But the adult me knows the real tale-of-the-tape.

Consider 1974 – 50 years ago. The Angels won 68 games – the Dodgers won 102 games. They were dominant then and are once again now. The Angels were a footnote; the butt of Southern California baseball jokes. The difference now is me – I have lost the starry eyed optimism of my youth. I see the reality that has occurred. The Dodgers are dominant once again and the reality is that there is nothing really to be optimistic about in the Angels Organization.

This World Series feels like a flashback to my childhood. Back in the 70s, the Yankees broke my heart twice when they took down the Dodgers in two consecutive World Series, in ’77 and ’78. The sting of those losses was unforgettable, but in ’81, I finally got a taste of vindication when the Dodgers beat the MFY, getting some well-deserved revenge. Those moments sparked a lifelong passion for rooting against the Yankees, no matter what. Even now, I still get a thrill out of watching the MFY fall short.

My dad was basically a real life Billy Crystal. Taking the train with his older brother all the way to Yankee Stadium to catch a ball game if he skipped school so that he could watch his heroes Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford. As a boy, my dad attended a game during the Angels’ inaugural season at Yankee Stadium and said he grew to like them. Which is why as a young boy I went to plenty of NYY vs CAL games . American League all the way and no way to the Brooklyn Dodgers who were still over there when my dad arrived to America. They were the bums!

my first Angel game was in 1968 against the Yankees. Mantle hit a HR of McGlothlin, Yankees won, 5-2.

last time i saw them in the World Series was the best baseball game ever. Game 7, 2001.
Yankees lost 4-3.

i grew up in LA County in the 1960s and yes have family and friends that bleed blue like you. meh.

My first game was also in 1968, on Bat Day. Don’t remember the game at all, but the records say it was a double-header against the Yankees and the Angels lost both games. It got a Rick Reichardt autographed bat, and my brother got Don Mincher. Eight-year-old me didn’t understand the rules or who was on the field, I was just happy to have the bat.

My first game was also against the Yankees but it was in 1962 at the ravine. Yankees won in the end but George Thomas hit slam early on to give the Angels the lead. I remember crying because the Yankees were losing and I was only 7 or 8.
