Ignominious Loss Postgame

Jack Kochanowicz went up against Nathan Eovaldi to finish up the regular season. How many of these guys were on the team at the start of the season? I count three. Not much in the way of highlights today.

Inning #1:

Jack Kochanowicz retired the Rangers on seven pitches. Taylor Ward almost hit a homer for the first out. Jack Lopez and Eric Wagaman strung together a couple of rinky dink hits to put two men on for Kevin Pillar. Pillar was hit by a pitch to load them up for Brandon Drury who then struck out. Matt Thaiss grounded out to second. (The Jack Lopez hit was later ruled an error).

Inning #2:

The Rangers got a couple of men on but they were stranded. Travis Jankowski was hit by a pitch. Hopefully this won’t be a trend in this last game of the season. The Angels just made a bunch of outs except for Michael Stefanic, who drew a walk.

Inning #3:

The Rangers all grounded out 1-2-3. The Angels were also retired 1-2-3 although Kevin Pillar mixed things up with a strikeout to go with all the ground outs.

Inning #4:

Nathaniel Lowe doubled and Jonah Heim singled to make it 1-0 Rangers. The Angels didn’t respond in kind.

Inning #5:

The Rangers went three up three down with fly ball outs. Niko Kavadas flied out. Michael Stefanic and Taylor Ward both grounded out.

Inning #6:

The Rangers again went three up three down. Everybody was swinging away today. Jack Lopez got a hit to lead off. Eric Wagaman struck out looking. So did Kevin Pillar. Brandon Drury struck out on a foul tip.

Inning #7:

Leody Tavares got a one out single on a liner to short. Travis Jankowski walked. Dustin Harris doubled to make it 3-0 Rangers. Ezequiel Duran reached on a Jack Lopez error. Marcus Semien popped out. Josh Smith grounded into a force out. Matt Thaiss doubled to right. Gustavo Campero grounded out to third. Niko Kavadas flied out to left. Michael Stefanic got a base hit but Matt Thaiss was gunned down at the plate, or was he? The Angels challenged, but the runner was out.

Inning #8:

Guillo Zuniga came in to pitch for the Angels. Wyatt Langford singled and then stole second base. Nathaniel Lowe homered to right. 5-0 Rangers. Jonah Heim and Leody Tavares hit fly ball outs to the left side. So did Travis Jankowski. Taylor Ward struck out swinging. Jack Lopez struck out swinging. Eric Wagaman hit into a 5-3 groundout.

Inning #9:

Roansy Contreras came in to pitch the ninth inning. He served up a homer to Dustin Harris. 6-0 Rangers. Ezequiel Duran singled. A wild pitch advanced Duran to second base. Marcus Semien walked. Josh Smith doubled making it 8-0. Wyatt Langford grounded out. Woo hoo! Thankfully Carson Fulmer came in to pitch. He got a couple of outs to stop the bleeding. Kevin Pillar flied out to left field. Brandon Drury popped out to the catcher. Matt Thaiss walked. Gustavo Campero reached on an error by Marcus Semien. A wild pitch advanced the Angels runners to second and third. Niko Kavadas struck out swinging to strand those runners.

The Angels got shut out 8-0.

Man. How many of you guys think you may honestly be dead before we win another pennant? Or even win another play off game?

Yeah, lol. I saw zero progression in the 2nd half, disappointed. I’m generally ok with the coaching staff. I’m very Leary that the GM and FO can get us out of this muck. Better chance I’ll meet Hugh Hefner than see the Halos win a pennant.

Uh exactly. I died last year, so I get this.

why do you think i have zero patience for any farmy farmyard farm rebuilt?

Sorry everyone. I prayed a prayer once (1986?) and I asked God just for one trip to the World Series. I didn’t care if we would WIN – I just wanted to see a World Series once in my life.

He went one better and granted us all a win. My life is complete.

I’m sorry; You’re welcome.

Me too. I always say the distance between zero and one is infinitely greater than between one and two. Plus, attenfing Games 6 and 7 in person is something thar can ever be taken away from me. My ears are still ringing from all that happy noise! I strongly suspected at the time it would never happen again in my lifetime, and I’m afraid I might be right.

How many scouts do we currently employ? Will we hire more? How does that compare to your average MLB team?

In 2019 at your press conference you claimed you would be prioritizing pitching and defense. This year, the team committed 4th most errors in baseball and had the 5th worst team ERA. Past years has been similar. Do you think you are in over your head?

Anything up for spilting the cost of the top tier level on baseballtradevalues.com

It would be cool if we bought the site a top sub for it and we used it for the winter content

Well… it can’t get worse than this season, right?

Unfortunately it can get much worse. With no real Farm system, an incompetent Org and the new lottery rules (which keep the White Sox from participating in this year’s lottery) the Angels could be very VERY bad for a long time. Add in the Trout and Rendon financial commitments and an owner who is keeping a lid on spending. Also players like Ward and Rengifo (who have kept the Angels from being the ‘24 White Sox) are going to be expensive free agents soon. I’m sad to say things could get much worse before they get better.

It can also get VERY worse next year. Not saying it will, but it can. We are gonna need to gamble on some youths. If the guys who played this year regress…. trouble. If all the kids we try out next season also suck…. deeper trouble. Very deep if Trout’s also out.

There’s no possible way to fill out the roster with experience, much less veteran players who are good, and also accelerate the youth movement. So we are likely to be pretty heavy on guys like Whit Merrifield in a mix of players like Niko Kavadas. Same with pitching.

There is a very solid chance we could be very bad.

On the other hand, we have more money than a lot of teams, so if we start getting good we can move up faster too. Doesn’t have to be six years of 90+ losses.

Three keys to success in 2025:
1. Add at least two high-caliber starting pitchers to the roster
2. Take the financial hit and rid the team of Rendon
3. Find a way to make peace with the lost souls still wandering around the Big A because their burial ground was disturbed.

Sure. Just two high caliber pitchers away from being good. No promblemz. Who should we get? Why not Burnes, Bregman, Freid and Soto? And cut Trout and Rendon? Sound good. OK. Let’s go….

I appreciate the efforts and this loyal community of commenters. It’s the only thing that made this season bearable for me.

I will remember this year as Arturo’s worst. The guy is a disgrace and should go away. In a world where results do matter, Minasian is a failure as well. If you can’t stand up to a terrible boss, you should preserve what little dignity you might still have and seek other employment. Whatever he’s paying you, it’s not enough. Washington made very little visible progress changing the culture, maybe it’s not visible to the naked eye. It was lost of me. He’s old and won’t be here much longer.

As a fan since ‘61, I’m obviously not getting any younger. I’ve never felt so little hope for this team, especially when Trout and Ohtani were both unable to move the needle. The only catalyst will be the departure of Arturo. I will always root for this team because that’s what a true fan does, but I don’t see a realistic chance for a turnaround in the foreseeable future.

Have a great off-season everyone!

The lack of investment in the minors (ie coaching and scouting) will hamper any rebuild going forward. You can’t sustain success without a pipeline of cheap, young talent. The Angels depth got exposed in the 2nd half of the season resulting in a AAAA team taking the field most nights.

I’ll give Perry some credit this season, he’s shown an ability to put together a bullpen with an assortment of parts (Crouse, Zeferjahn, etc). Which is what a good GM should be able to do. Which makes spending $11M/year on Stephenson maddening.

Could this Angels team pull a Royals and make the playoffs next year? It’s doubtful. The Royals invested heavily in minor league coaching and analytics over the past few years and success has followed.

They also spent 5 years doing it and this is year one for us.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

The Angels have a lot more money. If we weren’t stupid we could spend and accelerate that minor league development. We could spend on scouts and find some useful MLB cast offs and speed things up. We can also sign some expensive free agents and extend players. We won’t “royals” next year, we don’t have the kids for it. But we can turn things around faster than they did. But will we?

I’m not in the “we have the stupidest FO in the sport” boat. I’ve followed worse. But we sure as hell aren’t smart.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

Wait. Turns out this team wasn’t very good.

I actually think we should keep Neto, O’Hoppe, Adell, Schanuel, Soriano, Silent C and Joyce for next year.

We’ll also, in real life, likely have Rendon and Trout. That’s life. I also think some of the pen arms we had this year will come back. Zeferjahn, Quijada…. I dunno. But something like three of them. And Stephenson.

I think we’ll see another huge pile of the kids next year at all positions. I know everyone’s vaginas are probably too sandy for it, but I was actually impressed with Wagaman as a guy who was new to 3B from 1B and think he should put in work over winter and get a look. He, along with Cole Fontenelle, may secretly bring us a little future hope over there and it won’t hurt to give em a look in 2025. Moore at 2B at some point. we’re gonna see more Kavadas too…. they aren’t gonna just ignore that power. Maybe he can become a .240 hitter. What do we have? Seven kids who we’ll likely see get a look for the rotation?

It would be cool if we traded Anderson, Ward and Rengifo for more kids this winter. Then sign a few guys with Pillar’s attitude. Guys who will play some, help kids learn etc.

2025 will be a shitshow too, most likely. But if we actually build a young roster I can handle two gross years…. Plus CtPG Guy can keep complaining about a team that is legitimately awful instead of free riding his victimhood on teams that were just meh. Puts hair on our chests.

What are our payroll commits for next season anyway? I bet it’s higher than I’d like…..

I agree with what you are proposing for next year hopefully to include additional youth via trade. After next year though, they need to start building a team and end the tryouts for those that have not shown promise or improvement.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

The try outs aren’t gonna end till they fill a few positions/pitching staff spots with cheap kids. We don’t have the resources to go full Doyers and buy top talent to fill ten roster spots.

Going to have to work overtime for this winters IIWPM piece. We have some good things to work with but its going to take A LOT to go right to get this team to .500. yikes.

Wel done CPG this year. I appreicate all the writers hard effort throughout the year.

For the rest of you, thanks for being here and giving us something to look forward to coming to after a season to forget.

Missed the last few days while I was in Alabama, US Space and Rocket Center museum and the Tuskegee Airmen site. Evidently didn’t miss much. Arte needs to get out of the picture, either sell the team or blessed rest in the eternal grave. Anything.

For all of our Dad (err Arte) hate and stamping our feet and crying that ACTUAL attendance and ANNOUNCED attendance are sooooo different, you’re eyes are not lying.

I watched a lot of games, even if I won’t go to one. I think REAL attendance was down, especially on meaningless weeknight games after July 4th. But you’re right. I looked at a lot of games, random games against random teams on a Thursday night even, and was like “Man, there are a lot more people there than i would have thought would go….”

I don’t think attendance is down as much as some want to gloat over. But it’s certainly down. Down enough that Arte will feel it. The yearly number will be out soon and then we can all disbelieve all we want. Thing is, I don’t get the feeling Arte can really afford ANY significant downtick. With no evidence to back it up, I get the feeling Arte hasn’t recovered from 2020 yet.

Doesn’t really matter since he shouldn’t be splashing for big FAs anyway. But sweet Lord above it would be nice if he cheaped out by spending in the system/scouts etc.

Pathetic ending. Thank goodness my family brought our own Subway and I got my beer drink on in the lot before the game. Did not want to give Arte a penny for concessions. Team store had 50% off blank/over priced ‘replica’ jerseys and a small rack of 35% off crap nobody wants. Signs saying Fan Appreciation Sale, what a joke. Anyone paying to see this joke of a lineup on closing day should have gotten 50% off everything in store, $1 draft beers, and kids eat free.

Thanks Arte, for your unfinished business. Now we know that your unfinished business is beating the franchise record for the most losses in a season, and just one loss away from the century record.

We fans are truly grateful you stayed around for this.
