LA Angels Monday News Crash: Vapor Trails

Ben Joyce’s pitches are leaving vapor trails at this point. The Angels did win a series against the Mets over the weekend. That’s always nice. The Angels re-signed Adam Cimber to a minor league deal.

The White Sox will promote Ky Bush for his MLB debut. I’m laughing because it is so sad. Speaking of sad, the Angels are about to activate Anthony Rendon once again.

It appears that Lance McCullers Jr. is done for the year. When he is not on the injured list, Blake Snell tosses no hitters perhaps. It’s not something the Giants see every day.

Oh great! The Yankees are supposedly playing well right now. Well Yankees, spend all the money you want but you can never have the weather that we have. I wonder what Mike Trout would have to say about this front.

One of our dumbest moves ever, just sign to 8-7 pitcher what an a*shole. Not only was Ryan much more than a 16-14 pitcher, I can’t count how many games Ryan lost 1-0, 2-1 or 3-2. The Angels for most of the time he was with the team had one of the worstest offenses in baseball. They were like a box of kleenex, they popped up one after the other.

Is it silly to want to move Detmers to AA? Out of the AAA hitters paradise. With his poor performances in Salt Lake, I can only imagine he is not doing well mentally. Are we going to let him just drown down there? Maybe there are some coaches the org wants him to work with there. Maybe he is in “spring training mode” where results don’t matter because he’s working on some things. At least we gain another year of control closer to our supposed window? Perry playing the long game

Not silly at all. Salt Lake is horrible for player development.

So why is it?

Is it the altitude? the tiny ball parks? the crappy coaching or a bad City location for minor league affiliate?

If this problem is so severe why haven’t the Angels tried to find an alternative AAA team location?

It seems to me you would want to develop players by having them face the highest level of competition to as close as possible, emulate the level they will be facing at the major league level.

Salt Lake seems like a great town for a AAA affiliate but are the Angels stuck there now indefinitely because Major League Baseball has effectively taken over the minor leagues? Are there other teams stuck in the same situation where they are also skipping AAA with their better players or is this just another Arte Angel fan penance?

Ben Joyce is now officially in the core of Logan, Neto, maybe Schnauel, and Soriano on the next good team after Arturo and Rendon are gone. There are a few others who could quickly join that group including Moore and the pitchers from the Estevez trade. I still hold out hope for Adell.

Agree. Health is a concern for Joyce but now that he has a second pitch, he’s a beast.

The league will adjust to him, or at least try. So I’m really curious about his last month or so of the season.

Manager Mike Trout

do you really think he’s just going to walk away from the game and spend mid-life in rural NJ? maybe. spending 100% time with family? Could be.

just speculating but my thought he will be a manager here.

If Trout were a politician, I would say he lacks gravitas. He is a nice guy, a great baseball talent, but he lacks the authoritative seriousness to lead a team IMHO.

Washington, much to my surprise, has brought with him the leadership this team needed. I love the way he manages, including his trips to the mound to inspire and/or chew ass (instead of always sending out the pitching coach), and I love the way he interacts with guys in the dugout between innings.

Trout would be more figurehead than leader me thinks.

And that still wasn’t typical coach speak. You don’t have to agree with everything he says or does but, it’s always sincere.

Kevin Pillar staying was a mutual decision, he says. He said if he had asked Perry to be moved so he can play for a contending team, Perry would have done so. Also, he wanted to stay put because of his kids:

Pillar, however, said he “wasn’t surprised” that he wasn’t traded, and he said that was partly because of his own wishes.

“I think it was mutual,” Pillar said on Sunday morning. “I think if it would have fit this organization, long-term, in terms of a player that was being returned in a trade who would have impacted this franchise in the near future, I would have been all for it. I think (the Angels) would have been all for it.

“But weighing the cost of an A-ball player that’s a gamble vs. me continuing to be here for these guys and really doing what I was called to do coming here, it was a bit of a mutual decision.

“At the end of the day, if I really said I wanted to go somewhere else, I think they would have been accommodating to that. But I’m enjoying my time here.”

Pillar, who began the season with the Chicago White Sox, also said “a third move this year would have been really challenging for my wife and kids (ages 6 and 4).”

I don’t mind him coming back next year. He seems to be a good presence in the clubhouse and has produced well in a limited role. And God knows we need insurance for Mike Trout. Not just policy, but an actual person. So it’s either him, or Jordyn Adams (assuming Arte goes penny pinching again and won’t go crazy for Soto)

This has nothing to do with Pillar, but I would like for Jordan Adams to have the same opportunity that Jo and Mickey had this year. I would love to have Pillar on the bench or playing instead of Mickey.

Unlike Jo and Mickey, Adams has pretty much sucked giant balls at AAA. However, in his 26 games ( Since about the beginning of July) Jordyn is slashing .351/.443/.577 . his strike out rate is down to a more manageable 21.7 % per Plate appearances but hes only stolen 5 bases against 9 attempts during that span.

I would think the Angels have noticed, but without an injury to Ward, Jo or Mickey not sure they would elevate him to the big club even with this recent resurgence.

“Really doing what I was called to do” sounds like he was brought on to be a mentor to the young guys as well as a player.

Looking at Adell’s significant improvement on defense, I wonder if Pillar (a standout defender most of his career) has helped.

Moore had another hit in the rain-shortened game last night… tidy little 1.600 OPS through four games. Wetherholt also looking good… .900 OPS. Still wish we had gotten the latter… but if you throw in one of the HS arms we got with Moore’s underslot, seems like it could potentially be a positive thing in the long-term.

Keep in mind… it’s the White Sox. Normally a 6 ERA across four starts in AAA would not be grounds for promotion.

Ky Bush was pretty dominate in AA but his 4 starts at AAA are eerily similar to Reid Detmers 10 current starts at Salt Lake. I’m sure you can blame some of Detmers horrid numbers to the band boxes and higher altitudes of most all of his starts ( Salt Lake, Las Vegas & Albuquerque) but I’m not that familiar with the International League Park factors to make an assessment. but when your team is in the midst of an historic losing streak, even if you are in full rebuilding mode, desperation has to have set in.

I was dismayed when we traded Edgar Quero, but he seems to have lost his Mo-Jo for some reason, maybe we can get him back and let our minor league coaches fix him. 😀

https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=quero-000edg

.822 OPS in AA and .948 in his limited time in AAA. I was unsure about him as a hitter but these numbers suggest he will hit well in the MLB.

He struggled earlier in the year at AA but since June 1st Quero has crushed it in the Southern League hitting .371/.440/.608 in 28 games which led to his AAA call up. I have no doubt he will hit in the Majors but not sure about his defense though.

Still Perry really botched that trade.
