It Got Late Early Postgame

In the famous words of Yogi Berra, “it got late early” today for the Angels. Jack Kochanowicz has a big fastball and is likely headed for the bullpen at some point in time. He got rocked for 7 runs over 4 innings and the game was essentially over.

But this year is about evaluation and the kids for the most part did alright.

Zach Neto went 1 for 3 with a walk, two stolen bases, and an RBI. He’s been on fire as of late.

Jo Adell reached base in 3 of his 4 plate appearances and continues to punch the ball to right field. And Jo’s a class guy.

So the Angels lost 8 to 2 but saw some young offensive players continue to improve while further confirming Jackie K is not part of a future rotation.

Not Tyler Anderson will take the hill tomorrow as the Angels play their final game in Oakland and the Angels move closer to a trade deadline sell off.

More MLB draft signing action…
https://www.mlb.com/draft/tracker/2024/all/team/angels

At this point, the Halos have about $2.1M in bonus pool underage. Almost certainly enough to sign Alford and probably Mershon… but Gatwood seems a lost cause unless he’ll take around $1M.

I show closer to $2.8 Million because of the 5% overage if the Angels play the tax. the key is if the Angels can sign Johnson, Mershon & Prager for slot . if so, the Angels canfit in a $1.40 million signing bonus for both Alford and Gatwood.

July 21: 1B Nolan Schanuel out of lineup Sunday
Schanuel left Saturday’s game against the A’s in third inning with left calf tightness after unsuccessfully trying to beat out a grounder for a hit to end the top of the frame. He was replaced by Brandon Drury at first base in the bottom of the inning. Manager Ron Washington said after the game that it was just a cramp for Schanuel and that he was removed as a precaution. He was held out of the lineup as a precaution on Sunday, but expects to return on Monday in Seattle.

But returned in the 7th Sunday to get 2 RBI singles to help the gems salvage the final game of the A’s series.

I’m more impressed with his 12% walk rate and 12 HRs in a league where offense is down across the board. His OPS+ is 19% better than average.

Wilken’s doing just fine at 22 in a pitcher’s league.

I posted as much last week on BTV.

The Brewers and Pirates are by far the best matches for the Angels and their limited trade options in the next two weeks. Lots of mid-tier pitching and solid infield options and some sneaky good prospects in the developmental leagues.

Rock fight….Yankee fans say Anthony Volpe is better than Zach Neto.

Based on what. He may very well be the better player in the future. No way to know. Based on 1st half performance this year, Zach is a better hitter and trending up as opposed Volpe who is currently trending down. You can compare at the end of the year.

Volpe was better last year and won ROY.
Pretty even this year.

in time Zach may outshine Volpe, but he’s still catching up.

I’ll answer that in 2-3 years but I’ll take Bobby Witt Jr or Henderson on the spot.

“Take” them ? It is not as if they are available to be taken. Sure either is better than Neto, but Zach will turn out to be a pretty decent player I think …

not sure if this was posted.

The Angels need to be aggressive trade deadline sellers.

They have a young core, and should embrace the necessary rebuild.

Every year, the Angels sell fans on a false hope of contention. Those fans prefer a real plan over aimless mediocrity.

I don’t really know how much false hope exists here.
I say there’s more in the no hope camp.

“There’s an old saying in Anaheim, that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”

If you truly have hope with this team….then shame on you.

Blah Blah Blah. Anyone can talk through a paper asshole.

Tell us what aggressive means Sam? You want to trade away Everyone but the young core ? great. But for what? if we end up with 5 more Jadiel Sanchez’s and 4 more Tucky D’s how the hell does this help our franchise?

The only deadline trade made by this franchise I can recall where we picked up a viable prospect was the Moniak trade 2 years ago. And that is looking suspect right now.

I believe the Angels will be big sellers. I think the signing of Cueto yesterday is a precursor to that. But everyone here should hope for quality not quantity as most of these trade deadline deal prospects dont materialize even into replacement players and Perry and his predecessors have not shown a penchant for success in this area.

This is for you CB26 so there is no confusion. Sorry if I mislead you. My position since before the year started has alway been that there was never a path to compete this season so we should use the year to evaluate and develop young talent, which was mostly already on the major league roster, some of it was not, and to acquire additional young talent for the future. As long as this is the case, we have no reason not to play the kids and see what they do. I have always said we were looking at a slice in time at any given time during the season and we needed to wait until the end of the year before making any judgements or decisions. 3 1/2 months in Neto and O’Hoppe have demonstrated they are both ready to go in 2025.

Although Adell and Schanuel have shown improvement as of late, for most of the year they have not been very good. Adell has had stretches but has never demonstrated they can be maintained. Schanuel, after 3 bad months has had 3-4 weeks of improved performance. His BB rate has steadily increased since the beginning of the season and his K rate has steadily decreased. His BA and SLGing have improved but much of his recent improvement has been driven more by his BB rate than his hitting. I have also been saying this all year long, “he’s only 22 and he had almost no minor league experience, he needs time to see who he really is. Because he has not yet demonstrated much power, he pretty much needs to maintain a very high OBA to have value. Many people don’t like him at the top of the order because he is slow but that’s the place where his ability to get on base has the most value. It will be interesting to see if he can maintain what he has been doing lately for the next 2 1/2 months. I like Him personally and I hope he develops, but I am not a fan of a 1B who hits like a middle infielder.

Moniak has the same issues as Adell. The question is, do we do this again next year as well continuing to wait and see what happens with Joe, Mickey, Nolan, and maybe Moore? Regardless, I would like to see the club start to incrementally acquire players who can help us going forward.

Poppycock. Here are some examples as follows. “We have to keep ’em because they have 2 more controllable years”, “Fans will not come if their favorite player(s) are not around”.

Knotheads. ” So’nSo is hitting .300 so we need to keep him” knot realizing what a career year is even though he may bring someone better in who down the road in few years will be as good and with some hope will be better, and if you really like him, maybe, just maybe you would like to see him on a contender.

Sad Sacks. Drinking the Kool-Sid and getting high on hopeium and thinking that this team will make the playoffs with this bunch of no hit-no pitch-no field castoffs. Is this where I should add “Oh gawd”?

Turk had it right, let’s have fun with watching the recently drafted yuts and see if they move up. It’s a start anyway.

We’ve (Weave, is your kid ready yet?) watched the last two gamers and have shown frustration at the inability of this game.

“Oh Grandpa (like that is a negative label-you don’t know shit about this team. Or about the time of day. Or anything for that matter.) we may receive in return player’s that won’t be that good be such and such team made a deal with the Dodgers and it didn’t bode well for them. EEE-Gads, no one wins every deal, but at some time every team needs to rebuild no matter how long they are good, the streak comes to and end of those winning years.

Which is Dumb or Dumber? Sticking around watching a man tear a team down or tearing down a team to receive something in return to help get better?

And what did we get for Shohei and knowing full well that he would be wearing Blue for a full year and a half.

Like or love the Angels, our halos? Then pull up those boot strings and tie ’em tighter and see the future by getting your noggin out of those hopium clouds.

Cluttons for Punishment. “Oh I don’t want to wait (Take your pick, 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 years for a winner.) so long to make the playoffs. Funny stuff dept. You are right, waiting 10 seasons to show up in the Playoffs by what we’ve been doing makes sense. Why of course it does, smfh. Which is harder, waiting 10 seasons with no change in site or trying to change and waiting 3-5 years? Ask Bill (Stoneman) he will tell you.

Trade and sell or sell and trade, just make changes (David Bowie knew 😀 )

This from the Old Man who knows knotta. 😂
