The Angels continue to Struggle

The Angels Have lost 4 in a row, and it has not been a good week so far. After getting swept by the A’s, the Halos were looking for a bounce-back series/game, but that just wasn’t the case Justin Steele had a hell of a performance. He put on a class this afternoon, Throwing a complete game and holding the Angels to 1 run. As the Angels offense continued to struggle, so did their pitching.

With Griffin Canning on the bump, he had a down performance today. 4.1IP, 6 hits, and 4 ER; his struggle today was keeping the ball down. The Cubs did the most damage on balls up in the zone. If he would’ve been able to keep the ball down, he could’ve had a more compelling start. Even with the iffy start today, he was able to rack up 11 swings and misses, which is 1 less than Justin Steele who threw a complete game.

The cubs started their scoring early with A Seiya Suzuki 2-run HR

After the Cubs put up 3 on the Angels pitching staff they were able to muster up 1 run with a Taylor Ward single in the top of the 5th inning scoring Keston Hiura

It’s the first Angels run since Tuesday night !!!!

The Cubs were able to come up with 2 more runs later in the game.

Final Cubs 5 Angels 1

Fond memories of watching the late morning 11:20 Cub home games back in the summers of my yute. Listening to Harry Caray call games on Chicagoland WGN turned me into an honorary Cub fan. Bud Man commercials, Harry almost falling out of the booth singing the 7th-inning stretch, the obvious drinking while calling the game, no lights, the bleacher bums, Wrigleyville, watching the games from the roof tops across the street, Waveland Ave, Fire Station Engine 78 across the street, ivy covered walls โ€ฆโ€ฆGood Times!

You’re a young guy, Jack Brickhouse was very good also while Harry did the W/S games. Both are in the MLBHOF! We have Dick of the Oh MY fame in the HoF for us!

My fond memories were of watching Harry Caray and Jimmy Piersall doing WGN TV games for Sox.It was petty crazy especially when Piersall called all the Sox wives whores.

That sounds awesome. Became a follower of the Cubs, Braves and Mets due to the Superstations. When the Cubs were playing at home, meant 11:00 am baseball to watch on the west coast when I was not in school. Harry and Steve Stone on the play by play. Watched a ton of Superstation baseball.

I take issue with an assertion from the short article by Nolan Jess: we’ve lost 5 in a row now, not 4.

Never thought I’d be typing this sentence: Without Luis Rengifo we don’t stand a chance.

It clearly states on page 23, paragraph 4 in the book “Baseball for Idiots”:

“When Luis Rengifo becomes the cornerstone of your team, it is time to abandon all hope and take up checkers full-time.”

We have a .414 winning percentage. Same as 1968…the worst 162 game season number.

.414 winning percentage since 1968?

Is this some da Vinci code for 6-14 in April of 2002? 4 for April, 14 loss total, the 6 in 1968 for the win totalโ€ฆ..the leftover numbers 198 donโ€™t fit into my numerical analysisโ€ฆ..just ignore them. Looking forward to the Playoff run from here on out!

Remember the 6-14!

Well, that team had pitching, sort of, and no hitting, this team neither one, Yikes.

Streaks and games like this are difficult to watch, but realistically, without considering the pitching, this team currently has no stars and 2 players who are above average hitters Heefo and O’Hoppe. Ward is just a little above average, and Calhoun and Neto are about average. After that they have 4 other players whose OPS+s are 86, 76, 56, and 34. Since none of the last 4 are slick fielding middle infielders, none of them would be playing on any other team and Calhoun wouldn’t either because he’s a DH with a 105 OPS+.Trout would make them better, but they are really marching out a team that including Trout, consists of only 5 players who should actually be on the field. Even that team would have no stars and just 3 above average hitters. This is not unexpected but it does become hard to watch sometimes. If Heefo and Ward are traded, this is a 3 player team until new players arrive or something unexpected happens to one of the currently non performing players. We all know there is a long way to go and your patience and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated until change occurs.

Wait a secondโ€ฆ. I thought this was the easy part of the schedule and we had a chance to gain ground in the standings?

I’m confused.

For me, this is good. Rip that 6-game win streak camouflage away to help keep the Angels focus to initiate a fire sale. Perry was starting to communicate nonsense about holding back at the deadline.

Really? They let an opposing pitcher throw a 95 pitch complete game? That is some special coaching and game strategy right there , Cotton.

Thanks to the 6 game winning streak the lads are doing better than I expected. Theyโ€™re on pace for a 67-95 record

We’ll correct the win percentage after the trade deadline and when Trout gets back in the lineup for his annual right of passage of a 50 game season.
