LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Shutout City

The Angels rolled into Oakland and got swept. Not only swept, but shut out in back to back games with identical scores of 5-0.

At least the defense was bad when the offense was bad.

But not all of the defense was bad. Let’s go with Kevin Pillar’s home run robbery as our highlight of the week.

And not all of the offense was bad. I know his yearlong slash line is still pretty brutal but Nolan Schanuel is hitting .316 over his last 15 games and had a career high 4 RBI game in Oakland. He credits a talk with Angels hitting coaches for his turnaround.

Taking three losses was a pretty big hit. But the worst part of it might be losing Luis Rengifo to injury. There’s still no word on the severity of Luis’s wrist injury and with this medical staff that is scary.

The internet is full of trade proposals for the 27 year old switch hitter. The Yankees are the most mentioned destination.

If Rengifo is healthy, a trade for him should add a couple of names at the top of this uninspiring list of Angels prospects.

We do have one of the top 100 prospects according to MLB. Statistically each team should have about 3. Just don’t look at prospect #72 and what he’s doing in AAA.

The only way we are guaranteed to add talent to the prospect list is the draft at the end of the month. As draft day gets closer, more mock drafts will come out.

I would do backflips if the draft followed this mock. Personally I think it will fall more like this mock, which would still make me happy.

Keep in mind the middle rounds are where a lot of talent is drafted. Cookmeister has some solid names in here for later rounds.

I’ll leave you with this and simply say every adult near this kid sucks.

I hope you woke up today with the same number of fingers you had yesterday and that your pets maintained some sanity. Three day games at Wrigley. Takes me back to my high school days of watching the Cubs on WGN during the day then hitting the pool.

Link what I missed and enjoy your weekend.

Wow wee, Sandoval and Renny tough to trade, Ward forgot how to hit, Canning gets lit in Shitown, must be Arte’s fault.

Maybe we will get something out of the first round of the 2017 mlb draft after all.

My question is who has Stefanic pissed off so much that he is never given a chance to play regularly? He obviously has little power but constantly hits when he plays consistently.

Maybe The remaining Angel fans who want even the bench players to produce positive WAR?

He’s had a small sample size of 158 at bats in the MLB and has generated a 70 OPS+. In 31 at bats in 2024, his OPS+ is 47.

The reality is that he doesn’t have have the ability to be an everyday positive WAR/OPS+ contributor at the MLB level. At 28 years old he’s destined to be an organizational depth player. Every franchise needs guys like him to fill out the roster, and he can make good money in that role.

The Yankees are getting Gerrit and Giancarlo back, sure, yeah, ok, but what they really need is Geefy

They better wait for the MRI results first. Do you think the Skanks are going to pay top dollar for damaged goods?

The Draft a week from Sunday so we’ll know before nightfall on the 14th how desperate Perry is for his job.

There are about eight true ‘dudes’ in the draft and I’d be happy with any of them. Smith/Burns as pitchers then the biggest bats.

It’s not tricky- just get whoever falls to us. Don’t get cute. Don’t get fancy. Get one of those dudes. Don’t fuck it up.

Pretty good article on Marsh in The Athletic.

They’ve come to the conclusion he’s a solid platoon player/corner outfielder. The Phillies just don’t play him against lefties any more.

Stimulating stuff Jeff. I enjoy all of the draft articles.

It will be interesting to see what the Angels do in the draft and with midseason moves. Certainly the short-timers should get dealt: Estevez; Drury; maybe Pillar. Anderson could be a candidate for the Mets or Orioles. Of course, he hasn’t pitched all that well the last two outings.

It will be an intriguing July on the personnel front. I expect the Angels to draft a pitcher in round one, but no one should ever count on anything.
