LA Angels Thursday News Crash

The Giants designated lefty Raymond Burgos for assignment. if you can believe that. Astros right-hander JP France is very much out of commission due to shoulder surgery. Sorry. I guess this is DIY links. I was pretty busy yesterday.

Yet another chapter in the saga of me not being able to pick out pitchers for shit….
I wanted to sign Spencer Turnbull and Matt Boyd off the Tigers, even though both were injured, hoping for trade bait. Turnbull looked good and is back on the IL. Boyd just signed with the Clindians but will likely not be off the IL in time to be trade bait. I had hoped he’d heal faster.

I’m disturbed by the NBA draft. The Blazers had 4 picks and, you know, they were terrible in 2023-2024, going 21-61. So 4 picks could help, right? I see they traded away 3 of those picks, ending up with 1 guy. What??

And I feel there’s a connection, unfortunately, between my fave basketball team and my fave baseball team. Both have “strange” ownership. Arte we all know. The Blazers are owned now by Paul Allen’s sister. Both teams feel like they’re in-between what they were and what they could be with new ownership. And when I see what the Blazers have just done I think uh-oh, Perry will do something similar. The Blazers traded the 14 pick for an actual player so ok, I guess, and it appears they traded the 34 and 40 for “future second round picks”. Meaning, they get nothing this year and who knows what in 2026 or whatever.

I picture Perry dealing away the guys we usually mention and getting the equivalent nothing back in return. Equivalent to what the Blazers are getting, I mean.

2025 NBA draft could be historic. They need to suck again and besides, 2024 Draft has limited upside. Blazers did well by getting the UCONN Center, fell right to them. Good kid. You should be happy.

Looking at the top FAs this winter. Don’t really want Arte to sign any of these guys right now. I am the secret cheapness that forces Arte’s cheapness.

But really, are we in any type of position where giving any of these guys a pile of money makes us a winner next year? And jeebs lueebs… the FA market sucks. Even if we wanted to spend now, after Freid do we want any of those guys? Alonso maybe?

Wouldn’t mind signing Ha-Seong Kim, SS, Padres

Move him to 2nd or move Neto to 2nd (some have suggested) keep Kim at SS. Drury will be gone, still think Rengifo will be here, then he can go back to his super utility role, see more time at DH and corner OF, until needed at 3rd for Rendon’s lengthy time away for injury and healing. Nobody is ready to 2nd or SS other than Neto.

The desperate hours: a pro baseball pitcher’s fentanyl overdose

I would love it if the Yankees traded us anything for Rengifo, let alone Everson Pereira.

I would laugh when Rengifo’s bat dries up and an error costs them a playoff game. I can’t think of a better place for him to go.

Meanwhile, Rengifo is 6th in MLB in batting average and tied for 6th in stolen bases.

Rengifo will be a hot commodity at the deadline and the yanks & doyers figure prominently.

There will be no fire sale. The Halos are in contention for a playoff spot, so probably only a few players may be moved. Anderson, Estevez and Rengifo are the likely trade pieces.

You are stacking bad takes today. All things considered, our best player is O’Hoppe, followed by Neto and then Rengifo.

Ward is our 4th best player though he doesn’t play a premium defense position and has one more year of control. We’ve already seen peak Ward IMO whilst Logan & Zach have room to grow.

Do NOT trade Ward. He is the best player on the team and Perry won’t get appropriate value for him. The Halos still need some butts in seats.

When a team is as bad the Angels, there is no one untradeable for the right offer. Ward is a good player, he’s not someone you build a team around. If some team blew me away with an offer for O’Hoppe or Neto, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

PedroCerrano

I agree with Bluto and say trade him while he still has value. This team needs young, controllable prospects that can be developed and mature together.

Hopefully Arte pulls the cord and sells but who knows what whacky crap they’ll try. Disney Corp was not good at baseball but even they understood that you leave player development to baseball people. Salmon, Erstad, Glaus, Anderson, Eck, KRod were all home grown guys that were the core of the good teams.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

I keep seeing “appropriate value” brought up around here. Not just you, lots of folks.

We need to be careful, or want to be careful if we don’t want to be miserable bitches, when it comes to trades as a “bottom ten” team. Don’t use a hindsight calculator for these trades. I can tell that CtPG Guy, in his desperate need to hate his own team, is hyper aware of every GOOD trade other teams make for prospects, but totally ignores the boner trades that the GMs he lusts after have made. Doesn’t even know they exist.

We aren’t trying to get equal value for a guy like Ward or Rengifo. We are trying to get some value for a piece that has minimal future value for the franchise because he will be leaving us. THAT is the value a trade partner will be matching.

We will hopefully get some solid prospects from solid systems. That’s all they are though. Lottery tickets from a store that has had some winners in the past. BUT, that’s better than the sure thing we get if we keep these players, which is a team that is as good as we have now with a few players who will leave soon to watch for one more year, maybe two.

Most of the prospects we get will fail. But NOT trading guys means we are counting on the draft and current farm to elevate the team at some point. Trading means you take a shot at maybe getting a solid cheap young player down the line. Maybe two if you’re lucky. But that shot is better than the nothing you get otherwise.

But there is no situation where we get prospects that equal Rengifo’s static value right now. His value to us is that of a guy who will be an FA fairly soon for a possibly .500 team. What we get back will be the best offer from a bunch of GMs who know that.

Trades should get our farm out of the bottom 5 though.

Our AI overlord sez:

The Los Angeles Angels have made some notable minor league prospect acquisitions at the trade deadline over the years. Here are a few that stand out:

  1. Patrick Corbin (2010):
  • Acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a trade deadline deal that sent Dan Haren to Arizona.
  • Corbin was a promising young pitcher at the time and later developed into a solid MLB starter, although he made a bigger impact with the Diamondbacks than the Angels.
  1. Tyler Skaggs (2009):
  • Skaggs was originally drafted by the Angels in 2009 and was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of the Dan Haren deal.
  • He was re-acquired by the Angels from the Diamondbacks in a trade deadline deal in 2010.
  • Skaggs became a key part of the Angels’ pitching rotation until his tragic passing in 2019.
  1. Kyle Hendricks (2013):
  • Acquired from the Texas Rangers along with Joe Ortiz in exchange for pitcher Scott Downs.
  • Hendricks was a minor league pitcher known for his command and later went on to achieve significant success with the Chicago Cubs.

Damn SKYNET A.I. Bullshit. Here’s reality:

Corbin was traded as a prospect FROM the Angels to the D Backs as part of the package to an acquire Dreamy Dan Haren.Skaggs was reacquired by the Angels in December 2013 NOT at the trade deadline.Kyle Hendricks was never in the Angels system . He was drafted by us but never signed.Anyone else subscribe to an AI App that is actually semi-accurate?

But I think I did figure out what the winning prospect trade was :

July 13, 2001 The Angels trade Journeyman Outfielder Kimera Bartee to the Colorado Rockies for minor Leaguer Chone Figgins.

But in a couple of years when the team might (might) be good again the prospect(s) acquired by trading Ward might help.

I trust opinions here (sometimes, even 2002 is right😀), but I just don’t see where people think Arte (he is the #1 decider, no?) is going to part with reasonably priced controlled talent…. He doesn’t rebuild. We need to field a team next year, Rengifo and Ward are realistically our two best players. Unavailability strikes Rengifo and Trout from that conversation.
Anderson, Drury, Estevez, Pillar, basically anyone that doesn’t have contract next year, I see them moving, regardless where we are in the standings come the deadline. But, do we dump everyone if we are 7.5 games out? Obviously Arte won’t let PTP be a buyer after last year….but.

Therefore we will be buyers before the trade deadline and dumpers after the trade deadline.

Rengifo to Yankees brings Luis Polonia to my mind. He always talked about how he hated the “Jankees” when he played for the Angels. He had been with the Yankees before and came off like a jilted ex-lover. He went on to play with them in two more stints during his career.

Rengifo might shine bright there or explode into flames. Either would be fun to see as long as the Angels get a good return. He will be gone in the next year or two anyway which is before the Angels have any hope of relevance.

2022 MLB draftees by career WAR:
1) Neto 3.9
2) Jackson Holliday 0.5
3) Jordan Beck 0.7

No longer a stretch to call him the pick of the draft, considering where has selected, his performance and that of other middle-round draftees.

I think it’s a little premature to call Big Poppa the king of the draft. Jackson Holiday is just 20 years old and he may have 2-3 times more WAR by the time he reaches Neto’s current age.

And then there’s Schnauel. Or that all pitcher gimmick draft that yielded limited results. Sore armed relief pitcher Sam Bachman wasn’t much of a #1 pick. Last year’s “pennant” trades were a disaster, minor league assets for nothing. Robert Stephenson anyone? Yikes.

$500,000 Eppei buck Schnauel comes back next year and improves his hitting significantly, across the board. He’ll make adjustments…. primarily in his OB%, he will start making better contact, more consistently.

Angels stand 33-46.
Here are our next 17 games before the ASB:

4 vs Tigers (37-43)
3 @ A’s (29-54)
3 @ Cubs (37-44)
3 vs Rangers (37-43)
