Single Use Postgame

So here we go with the “Will Reid Detmers Get His Act Together” game. Schanuel still has his thumb boo boo do Willie Calhoun at first.

Through two, this one was a pitcher’s duel. Looked at another way, neither side had a batter who managed a hit. Let’s face it. The Mariners pitcher was throwing primarily fastballs, so it’s not like our guys didn’t know what was coming. Over half of them struck out anyway.

Mickey Moniak stepped up in the third inning with a two out double that was almost a home run. It didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Taylor Ward struck out.

Detmers finally coughed up the first run of the game on a Julio Rodriguez single in the bottom of the third inning. 1-0 Mariners.

You never know. That might have been the only “highlight” I get to show you.

In the bottom of the fourth, Detmers walked the number 8 and number 9 batters to load up the bases. Mitch Haniger had singled. OK. Here is the ultimate low-light of this game. (The grande salami off Detmers.)

I now no longer hold out hope it is because of the Angels’ schedule. The Angels suck this year. Set it in stone.

They brought in Carson Fulmer to pitch and there was no further damage.

As long as we are doing lowlights, Luke Rayley homered in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-0 Mariners.

Go Angels!

Luis Rengifo did something kind of cool while we were in the process of losing this game.

Julio Rodriguez also singled to drive in a run. 7-0. Cal Raleigh doubled to drive in both Dylan Moore and Julio Rodriguez. 9-0 Mariners.

Cole Tucker pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth with some 48 mile per hour gas and fielded his position.

He’s obviously a soft tosser, though, compared to Sano. When do we get Sano back?

The Angels very seriously lost this game 9-0. Y’all hear me? I said 9-0 and our “closer” was pitching at 48 miles per hour. Kevin Pillar singled, at least, to keep his hitting streak alive. Matt Thaiss gRounded out to keep the shutout alive. The Angels lost 9-0.

We have a “winner”

The Angels have signed left-hander CD Pelham to a minor league deal, as announced by the Mexican League’s Leones de Yucatan on Friday. Pelham is represented by Pro Edge Sports Management.

The 29-year-old joined the Rangers organization after being selected in the 33rd round of the 2015 draft and eventually worked his way through the club’s minor league system to make his big league debut back in 2018. That brief cup of coffee in the majors didn’t go well, as Pelham struggled to a 7.04 ERA in 7 2/3 innings of work across ten appearances with seven strikeouts and four walks.

90 days in……..Yep, right again.
Some of you said that Washington was the RIGHT GUY because he’s old and experienced. THE OLDEST BTW, now that Dusty Baker retired, meanwhile I said they shouldve hired Jayce Tingler. who’s still young at 43 and maybe hired Wash as bench coach. BTW I also already said MLB field managers and bullpens still don’t matter the same way as they do in college FB, the NFL or college BB.
Not saying you’re all wrong, just saying I was right……again.

So I must assume they’ve fixed that concern in the past 24 hours, it’s a miracle!

Another bad move by the Angels. We need good players more than anything else, not a good infield coach, which is fine, but isn’t a difference-maker.

Any other move would have a required bringing up some puss thrower or a 40 man roster move so the Angels hands were tied in even if this move is just temporary for a couple of weeks.

But I’m not sure why Wash would make that comment . In Joyce’s last 10 appearances ( 11-1/3 innings) Joyce has only walked 3 batters while striking out 21 . Thats yielded a .62 WHIP and 1.59 ERA and a .329 OPS against . I know that was against AA batters but sheesh. Maybe he got his Joyces mixed up. They are twins you know.

The Angels, by any measure, are a better hitting team than the Mariners, the difference is the Mariners give up approximately 1.25 fewer runs per game.

Well, yesterday’s measure had the Mariners at 9 runs on 9 hits, The Angels had 0 runs on 3 hits? That measurement says the Mariners hit better.

Good move sending Detmers down. He is searching for answers. I don’t understand his patterns either. I used to believe (and still do to some extent) that his curve is his best pitch. He doesn’t use it as often as I’d expect. He instead seems to be using his inaccurate, very hittable fastball more — which is the opposite of what Sandy is doing. Detmers has been up for years now so “rushing them” I don’t think can be the excuse anymore. He has had multiple off-seasons etc. to work out any kinks. He does need time now though to figure out what is going on.

BTW this is the type of player that if we ever trade him, he will become a quality arm for another team somehow.

We clearly haven’t destroyed what value remains with him….yet. By 2027 he’ll be so broken that no one team fix him. Brandish got out in time. Detmers will be working at the car wash with Adell and Newcomb.

On his way to becoming Dylan Bundy 2.0.
Sad ain’t it, I guess if you keep rushing players into the fire like the Chicago Bears who I guarantee you will ruin Caleb Williams just like they did Justin Fields, then this rabbit hole will only get deeper.

We will see. On Caleb Williams, there are multiple schools of thought in the NFL. First, Williams played as a freshman. He then won the Heisman later. He even came back for a year after that. So he’s got experience to go to the next level.
Second, a split exists in thought as to whether playing guys and letting them learn is best or whether sitting them for part of a season is better. Manning, Aikman, and others believe you learn by playing. Rodgers and Mahomes learned by sitting. Both approaches have worked. It all depends.

Senator_John_Blutarsky

Clearly Detmers has underperformed for two seasons, but there’s also this:

“Detmers’ demotion could have implications on the lefty’s service time if he spends most of the remainder of the 2024 campaign in the minor leagues. The lefty entered the 2024 season with two years and 64 days worth of service time and has currently accrued 65 days worth of service time to this point in the season. Players accrue 172 days worth of service time across a full season in the majors, meaning Detmers will need to spend at least 43 more days on the major league roster or injured list this season in order to finish the year with three years of service time. If he spends less than 43 days in the big leagues throughout the rest of the 2024 season, the lefty’s first opportunity to reach free agency will be pushed back from after the 2027 campaign until after the 2028 campaign.”

Very good point. That is a lot of motivation under the current circumstances to keep him down for until late August or September . He would still have 4 years of club control. Schanuel is in the same boat. If you sent him down you could save a year of club control. Nothing to do with Detmers, but rushing players to the majors before they’re actually ready just uses up service time before they’re actually ready. It’s stupid under the circumstances and poor management. If they were smart, after last year, they might have done the same with Neto (who’s only 23) and save all those guys for next year.

One could argue they are manipulating (thought that was Eppler’s go-to), but given the performance it does seem justified. I guess we will know if he is killing it in AAA and they don’t call him up again right away.

Detmers was fine last year pitching for a sub-par team and porous defense. Gave up less hits than innings pitched and punched out greater than 10 per 9 innings.

I don’t want to rush anyone – if there is someone (like Soriano) that is basically ready. Sounds like we will see another reliever for a bit, not needing a 5th starter for about two weeks.

Indeed…the reason this is happening is because they have rushed all of them.

There’s really no reason to rush Detmers back in 2024. The team is going nowhere, and Detmers being in the minors clearly doesn’t hurt his trade value since it’s pretty low already. Let him marinate in the SLC summer and get his head right for 2025.

Start pitching like major leaguers or be sent down.

Twebur

Canning far from an ace, had a rough start to the season, but he has gone at least 5 innings last 8 starts, keeps us in most games.
That is a solid #5 starter that a lot of MLB teams would take. Last time I checked, MLB average start is about 5 innings.

Sandy could learn a thing or 2 from Canning

According to Angels Top Plays account on Instagram, Detmers is being optioned to Triple A. I’m doubtful since I don’t think Silseth or any other pitcher is ready to take his slot, but stranger things have happened.

In 2022 Detmers was sent down 6 starts after tossing a no hitter. He credited roving pitching coordinator, Buddy Carlyle for film work to zero in on some mechanics. Buddy was purged after Percival blasted his use of iPads in pitcher development and really, poor results. Buddy has the same role now with the Rays. It’s clear, Enright cannot isolate the issues, maybe Perry should trade for Buddy’s iPad secret sauce.
