LA Angels Monday News Crash:

We’ve gone from “aggressive” to about 15 minutes of generalizations. I’ve got a bad feeling about this. I am not entirely sure Perry even has a plan. Let’s face it, the free agent spending numbers don’t lie.

Hunter Renfroe got $13 Million in exchange for two years with the Royals.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is going to the Diamondbacks. It’s a three year deal worth $42 Million. Yoshinobu Yamamoto is apparently zeroing in on New York as a landing spot although the Giants and the Red Sox have also made him huge offers. The Dodgers traded for Tyler Glasnow and Manuel Margot. Going the other way were Ryan Pepiot and outfielder Jonny Deluca.

Isn’t it funny how players are always open to signing with the Angels when their career is declining.

Trying to sign FA at any other time of their career is like pulling teeth.

It’s becoming obvious players view the Angels as a place to ride it out and cash those fat checks.

If they sign Stroman you’ll get the worst years of his career. He was dogshit second half of ‘23.

This group has always had its naysayers, but I’ve never seen a unanimous consensus like this year. If they don’t make some big moves, ticket sales are going to drop on top of the Ohtani loss of fans.

Arte can attract buyers with a lower payroll and hope that Trouty rebounds to keep tix sales at 2 million.

lol no chance they sell 2 million tickets this season, no matter who they bring in.

And no chance they get half that actually in the stands unless there’s 82 home games vs BOS, NY, and LA this season.

Arte has always believed that big stars equals winning (for him). I found his statement about why we wouldn’t trade Ohtani at the deadline fascinating. With Trout hurt he felt he owed it to the fans to come see the remaining superstar, otherwise what? they wouldn’t show? Note that he was not talking about winning games, then or down the road. He was more interested in getting fans out to the park, to an enjoyable experience seeing *Ohtani*.

Now Ohtani is gone and Trout is 32. By what matters to Arte we should be seeing a large splash signing. But who is there to be signed? Let’s say Snell is a desirable player for the Angels. Would we make a special trip to see Snell? Bellinger? I don’t think so, certainly not at the Ohtani or Trout level.

Arte has catered to the casual fan for years. Now he’s in a spot. There’s no way he can deliver for 2024. Honestly, if it’s a lost year he might be very much inclined to sell before the season starts.

Matt Carpenter signing would enable the Halos to make it to the World Series. I’m sure the Cardinals would comp him some tix and he could take a few Halo teammates to a game….

Matt Carpenter caught lightning in a bottle last year, look at his numbers for fielding. He is older now and really has a very limited future in a rebuilding faze we are about to enter. More Yuts is what is needed to go forward and get back to winning. Besides, picking up ex-Cardinals is no bueno.

Braves released Matt Carpenter. I’d taking a flyer on him. The Angels are going to need a warm body at 3B when Rendon gets injured in April. The likelihood of playing time might actually make him want to come here, too.

Well, one trusts management enough to know if he is healed, right? Merrifield isn’t as versatile in the IF, which is where we need the support (depending perhaps on how we deal with DH). He is also 3 years older than Urshela.

We were all ready to jump off a bridge on HH after we missed out on Cole. Took the Rendon signing to bring a lot of us around back then. Hilarious as that seems now.

So whenever Arte wants to pay Bellinger, I guess.

I doubt the two are connected…

Nor am I convinced that there is as much mourning going on as some people (the media especially) might think. A very good amount of people on this site, for example, didn’t think we should re-sign Ohtani in the first place. It is very possible that the Angels were thinking the same thing, but just kept an outward appearance of “being interested” to make casual fans happy.

“Guerrero, 33 in January, has 106 innings of major league experience but hasn’t appeared in the bigs since 2019. He signed a minor league deal with the Reds going into 2023 but was released in June after posting a dreadful 11.51 earned run average in 22 2/3 innings. “

We can rejoice because he was nails in the Mexican League. Perry has a plan…it’s to get severance when he’s fired.

I agree 100%. To be fair, I do think Arte has theoretically tried to accomplish on-field success by throwing money at certain free agents. But the reality is money spent without a real baseball organization directing the decision making is often wasted money. Arte seems to think spending money (to a point) is sufficient. But if there is no solid baseball organization behind that money it is wasted resources.

I don’t think Perry is ever saying anything he actually believes in these interviews. We know ownership drove the entire Ohtani situation so when he says he doesn’t regret not trading him, what else is he gonna say? “Yeah my boss kind of screwed that one up” ?

His interviews are pointless. We were going to be really aggressive before signing Ohtani and now that he’s gone I guarantee you he has gotten some kind of directive/limit/whatever from Moreno about spending or otherwise acting aggressively.

Hopefully we do nothing and that means Moreno is slashing payroll in preparation for a sale.

Can we switch management teams with the Rays? What another great move they made. Glasnow has filthy stuff but can’t go for a whole season. They pick up a solid reliever with two more years at the league minimum. Watch out if their new stadium creates huge windfalls. The location of the Trop is terrible.

7 days left to Christmas, and we went out shopping yesterday and I scored an Angels Christmas tree ornament at a grocery store, last one too. I was proud of my find. It’s made by Hallmark. A red baseball glove catching a white baseball with our logo on it. We get in a long line and the guy ringing us up, wearing a Santa hat that was green and gold with a Packers logo holds up my newfound treasure and says this is nice, with got three in last week, just not as hot as the Dodgers ornament, we got a dozen of those in and they were gone in an hour. Ouch, I am in a sinking ship feeling told me of the reality that I am in a serious minority in SoCal rooting for the Angels now as Dodger fans have taken over with Shohei to Blue, leaving me feeling blue. 😮 😡 😆

Yamamoto is a battleship looking for a coastal port, but battleships do not fly, therefore he is not earning his pitching wings as an Angel. Details of Shohei’s contract are out and if true and the Halos did not match it (Or should we say Arte didn’t match it, Arte is a bigger horse’s arse than we thought.

Charles, it’s not at all Perry Minasian is without a plan, it’s Arte has no plan other than not raising payroll, period. Either he is trying to keep payroll where it is at for a possible new owner, or he knows a huge wave of depression is coming upon the team or both. PTP is just a lame duck at this point until his leash is to be removed.

Could be to that Dumbass Arturo is going to wait until next off season to load up on Free Agents, but tight lipped as usual the Angels front office has been sworn in to say nuttin’.

Arte is a “dumbass” for not paying that much for Shohei when the team around him is subpar?

I completely disagree. It’s likely that Shohei has already shown us his peak (2021-2023) and the inevitable regression is soon to follow.

Shoehei is a good addition for a big market team that is already good. The Angels are neither

Banned-it’s seeming to me that I have not at all changed my narrative, I said in July of ’22 that the best thing that could be done then was to trade Shohei for all we could get, then I stayed the course and said that I believed we should have traded him last off-season and again this past July and I never once claimed to expressed the need to sign him for what was thought to be 500 million for 10yrs. So yes, I do believe Arte is a “Dumbass”, if you want, I can make a list of dumbass moves he has made in just the last 10yrs of ownership. So, disagree if you wish, I can but down my case and you can think different because he never had a real chance to sign Shohei anyway.

BannedInLA

Obviously Arte should have traded Shohei. Preferably in 2022.

I am focused in your contention that Arte is a dumbass for not retaining Shohei for 700 million – deferred or otherwise.

You’re attempting to move the goal posts on your original argument. Are you making the argument that Arte should have the 700 million or not or was it simply an avenue to launch into Arte? Two things can be true at the same time. Arte flubbed on not trading him, but at least he didn’t compound the problem by throwing 700 million at a 30 year old baseball player.
