LA Angels Monday News Crash: Under Qualified

Do you remember that qualifying offer the Angels extended to Shohei Ohtani? The deadline for him to accept it was today.

Ryan Goins is now the Angels infield coach. Eric Young Sr. also signed on. It looks like Joe Espada will be the new Astros skipper.

Shohei picks a pocket. I guess, just don’t do that to a cop. He won a Silver Slugger, as expected. Topps released a couple of cards that feature Shohei Ohtani and Babe Ruth on the same card. The one where they appear as pitchers is shown. The other card features the two players as hitters.

Who wants to give a nice big old fat contract to Lucas Giolito?

Here is a metric that shows how good a pitcher is at preventing a runner from advancing to second base by means of a steal. Patrick Sandoval was a top five pitcher in this regard over the last two seasons. The Yokohama DeNA Bay Stars agreed to post Shota Imanaga. When they post him, he will have 45 days to find his MLB contract.

The Orioles and Tucker Davidson agreed to a pre-arbitration contract. Nothing to see here. The deal is estimated to be near league minimum.

Here are the 2023 Arizona Fall League award winners. None of the Angels prospects won anything. Davis Daniel did have a 0.79 WHIP over 19 innings pitched. The Surprise Saguaros won the league championship.

Former infielder Lee Richard has passed away at the age of 74. Former pitcher Dennis Higgins passed away at the age of 84.

Don’t hate it, Angels have had a couple of Bo’s before. Let’s go Bo.

Does this mean the Angels will trade Chili Davis for Mark Gubicza again so he can become our new pitching coach?

I remembered this and thought Porter might be about helping with Rendon.

So Bo knows Rendone?

Who knew?

How much experience does Young have coaching 3b? I guess he cannot be worse than what we had last year. Being that we missed the boat on Ohtani, why did we not trade him when he never said he wanted to return to the team. I really do dislike the guy who is the real GM/Owner, dumber than a box of rocks.

About as much as Tori would have had at 1B

Plus just on the strength of warm memories of Torii in his playing days, and his super-human gritty, earthy coaching abilities will enable the magic of the monkey to once again terrorize the pitching staffs of the American League. Don’t you read the posts here?

Well he sure as hell knows how to run the bases which is way more than you can say about the last 3+ windmill clowns we’ve had down there.

Ryan Goins signing means I’m now older than a coach. First it was the players. Then seeing kids of players I watched as a kid. Lately I’ve taken on the role my dad played with me and I’m telling my kid how I watched the coaches play.

I’m getting old.

Get off my lawn.

I’m right there with you. Seems like every time my son and I watch any game of any sport I say “I used to watch his father play”

That started happening to me a long time ago, I think when Jim Spencer passed away in 2002.

I remember walking through the polish catholic cemetery looking for my grandfather’s grave. My wife was asking me how to pronounce names- Reminded her that Polish is like Wheel of Fortune, except vowels are incredibly expensive and you can have all the Zs you want for free.

too early question

if Shohei signs with the Yanks or Sux would you hope he fails? I guess I’d want him to do well while that team tanks

Arte and The Platypus will have driven him away, therefore I’d wish him success except for when he plays us.

Pretty much this.

I don’t see either team really having a chance to get him so it will be moot.

Personally hoping for Braves or Giants

I think it will neck down to the Dodgers, Cubs or Rangers.

I wish him success and his team failure.

Also Probably what some Japanese fan said when Shohei moved to MLB.

Angels sure did grant that wish.

I would not hope that he personally failed, but rather that the team did. In the case of the Yankees I would not have that hope as much as I would for the Dodgers, Red Sox and a few other teams. I don’t actually hate the Yankees. Still want to beat them though.

Their road fans, however….

[note: I have found MFY fans to be decent in their native environment of the Bronx. Disclaimer: I was wearing an Angels cap during a game vs. the Reds. Had it been vs. the Halos, my experience might have been different. YMMV]

I have been to several games in the Bronx over the years (both old Yankee Stadium and the new one) and probably 80-90 % of the time I was treated decently, even wearing Angels gear.

Yeah, I got some good natured kidding. But the Yankees fans for the most part use humor and are decent. In contrast the Boston fans are downright mean. They’re just mean, bitter people. I think I have only encountered two or three Yankee fans like that over a few games. But that is the rule in Boston.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the team being in Whit Merrifield on a two year deal. He can play 2B/OF while bring speed and base stealing ability to the fold.

He has nothing to offer, no glove, speed has been decreasing and age increasing. What we need is a 3b and OF help. But most important is pitching help, something every team needs nowadays.

Whit Merrifield doesn’t preclude us from signing pitching. At all.

I’d agree that he’s past his peak (more so on the defensive side), but he still has speed as he had 26 SB’s last year.

He can back up 2B and OF.

I like Candelario to cover 1B/3B, but we’ll have to engage in a bidding war to get him and he screams “big overpay” the more I think about it.

Any money spent on Merrifield would limit what can be spent on pitching. We need pitching, both frontline and depth (in both the rotation and pen).

I saw an item saying the Angels are “eyeing Tim Anderson “ but misread that as “Tim Salmon” because I’m still thinking of coaches.

I was interested until I re-read it

We need Anderson like we need a hole in the head.

I’m sure the Atlanta Braces 1st and 3rd base coaches will be the difference makers. Do they assign WAR to base coaches?

Atlanta Braces.

How much did the orthodontics society of America have to pay for that name change????

They structured a retainer.

But the name change only stays with the team for 18 to 24 months. Of course they will have to meet and tighten up the terms every 6 weeks.

The one thing I am 100% certain on is that Eric Young is a big upgrade. Huge. Massive. Undeniable. Butterfallover was just awful last year.
