Angels Blow it vs Rays, Lose series

The Angels had to get up early to face the Rays today. I know I did not feel like watching even if the team was not tanking. AM Baseball is annoying after all. But how did they do anyway? Well Canning went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, striking out 7 and walking 3. Really trying to keep injuries down eh?

And how was the tanking going? Did everyone get the-COME ON MAN!

Yeah Jo Adell decided to actually try for once and played good today. I get that he is trying to not be a failed prospect and all but he is ruining the tank here. Seriously, a home run is not what he is supposed to do.

Oh well, it was close enough for the bullpen to blow it. Could they though? The answer is yes. Yes they could.

Highlighted Recap

The Rays scored first, Canning following his orders.

1-0 Rays

Fletcher singled in 2 but you can’t really blame him as it was really an error that scored them.

2-1 Angels

After Canning gave up another run on a groundout, he was removed and it was even util Jo Adell did a thing and hit a 2 run home run.

4-2 Angels

Angels bullpen allowed an RBI double though to make it close.

4-3 Angels

It was set up for the bullpen to blow it, which would work. Otherwise, it would mean a series win at the Trop for the first time since 2016. So, would they blow it, or fail to blow it?

Charlie sheen blew it! Rays tied it in the 9th with some help from Neto.

TIED GAME

And a bloop means the Rays win. Angels lose. They blew it and tank is intact!

Walk off

Upcoming

9 Games left. At Minnesota, and home vs Texas and the A’s. Enjoy this baseball, you will miss it come January.

Neto and Brandon Drury had failed to come through in the top of the ninth when the Angels had runners at second and third and one out, with a chance to add some insurance.

“You’ve got to find ways to get those runs in,” Nevin said. “That’s what good teams do.”

You’re the manager of this team dip shit why didn’t you call for a squeeze play instead of whining about it after the fact?

That’s been happening all year. Did he just realize this or does he have to pretend he’s gonna get tough on the players as the season winds down?

Do Neto or Drury even know how to bunt?

Cowboy26

Drury wouldn’t bunt with 2 outs. I’ve seen Neto attempt to bunt before but at his stage of development he should be working on this at practice for this perfect opportunity.

fwiw the squeeze play is usually not the answer. Situational hitting is, and we’ve struggled with it all year

I think you need to go for the win there. I’d go for a squeeze to push the winning run across. But…Angels are not a fundamentally educated or talented team.

it was a desperately needed insurance run. We already had the lead.

Estevez is a closer on a bad team. A bull pen piece on a good team.

Trade him in the off-season. Getting 1 decent season out of him and then a prospect would be a fantastic outcome.

I subscribe to the JeDi methodology of building a bullpen — farm + waiver claims. Relievers are so volatile, there’s 0 reason to invest multi-years in one, unless you have team control.

Yet the key members of the JeDis most successful bullpen while he was the GM here were built though a trade ( Huston Street) and a Free agent signing (Joe Smith)

Oh and don’t forget 2 of the DiPoto 4 free agents were relievers.

BTW Not sure that statement even applies to JeDi’s current team . Of the 9 Seamen residing down there in the Mermen bullpen only one has came from their farm system . 5 arrived via a trade while the other 3 were waiver claims.

I always thought Billy was more active searching the garbage heap for firemen. While the JeDi was more of a Traitor Trader.

Appreciate you doing the digging I was too GA to do.

Point still (kinda) stands — go cheap in the bullpen. No reason to commit longterm money towards relievers

That said, it is one of the primary places the Angels should spend money next year. We need a starter or two, but then bullpen pieces behind Estevez (unless we get rid of him too) while letting some of our young talent take turns (Joyce, Quijada, Soriano, Marte, Suarez, Warren … )

As long as these bullpen adds aren’t named Loupera I think this makes sense.

I am very happy Tepera is gone (so seems everyone) and Loup should have been let go a while ago (why didn’t we put him on waivers?).

One year deals would be ideal – especially if we really are trying to tank. If we resign Shohei and Trout is healthy again, we could even make a push in theory.

Congratulations to Carlos Estevez for being named today’s “Tank Commander” of the game. His weak-ass effort tonight sealed the loss for the Halos and helped improve our draft chances.

We salute your failure with a warm glass of Carlo Rossi “wine” from the ceremonial jug. Keep up the outstanding results!

The Angels are a mess of epic proportions, as illustrated by the state of their best players. Ohtani is heading toward free agency, Trout has struggled mightily to stay healthy these past three years, and Rendon’s contract, with $114 million remaining over the next three years, feels untenable. The Angels, meanwhile, have secured their eighth consecutive losing season, the longest streak in franchise history. — Gonzalez espn ranking last paragraph

23. Los Angeles AngelsRecord: 69-83
Previous ranking: 21
On Friday afternoon, Anthony Rendon revealed he has been dealing with a tibia fracture, a diagnosis — from a fifth doctor of his own choosing — that ran in contrast with the Angels’ description of a deep bone bruise over these past two months. Later that night, media returned to the clubhouse to find that Shohei Ohtani’s locker had been cleared out, the product, we learned the following day, of him shutting it down as a hitter and shifting his focus to elbow surgery. Mike Trout, meanwhile, is running out of time in his hopes of returning from the hamate fracture he suffered in early July.

Since 2016 Trouty has one season of no injuries and that of course is in the Covid-19 season of 2020 as it was a very short season. Trouty has missed a lot of his prime years of production due to one ailment or another for some time now. Shohei as great as he is has missed his share of games, especially as a pitcher. Rendon(e) is a hospital ward all to himself. Two Bags played in has most games in 2020 – the last time he was productive. But it’s only 106 million dollars a year, give or take, for the 3 of them to not show up.

At least we’re playing good teams the rest of the way…. and the A’s, who’ve already proven they can sweep us.

Every team we play now is a good team regardless of record. Hell we just got swept by the Tigers who we swept in July.
The biggest concern you should have is the Twins. Their magic number is one and they’ll probably be so hungover from winning the division they may not show up this weekend.
